A guy at work lost his first wife in a Pinto. She was rear ended and the car caught on fire burning her to death. His baby girl was shot up (before car seats) under the dash somehow and was spared. She's 36 now, is married with two kids.
Owned five pinto/bobcat wagons, model year 74-80, cars were used as everyday work car. Cars were very rugged , and reliable. Earned enough to retire @ age 50.
I had a 73 and had my gas tank fixed. It was a dependable car we passed through our families. Nobody disliked it...not one of us. It was fun to drive even with automatic.
History says this car is crap and I believe it, becasue my parent Pinto's tranny went out. The Pinto sold like crazy, it looked more modern than the competitors, and people liked it. It sold virtually unchanged for 9 consecutive years, so in some respects, it wasn't a total loser. I learned to drive on this fun little car, so I have fond memories of it.
Perhaps not the worst and not the most dangerous either. Only 1 model year had the issue with the exploding gas tanks. Didn't the 70s Chevy trucks with the gas tanks behind the cab blow up too? Pintos were a simple design and fortunately easy to fix if something broke. Junk yard parts were plentiful too way back when.
@Rtrt67: I will back you up on that. They were not the most dangerous car, the were just small, and all cars have "flaws" when there are first marketed. However, Pinto did have a HUGE design "flaw" I will not deny, but I just think it was more like, if you took a 1972 Monte' Carlo and ran it at high speed into ANY small car, it was going to be a DANGEROUS situation. Pinto just took the rap for that type of problem.
the whole bad wrap thing came from Ford's internal memo about cost to fix the problem as opposed to just paying out the law suits. They weighed peoples lives as less important than the 150 dollars for each car to place a shield between the gas tank and the axle. Ford did end up putting the shield into the production line cars.
If one researches the Pinto story, it really was totally overblown. It's similar to the mid-80's Audi 5000 "sudden acceleration." Way overblown, and almost put Audi out of business.
Actually ford corrected that problem in the early 70s these are good little cars my cousin has one with over 320,000 miles on it a 80 pinto hatchback he just rebuilt the engine and tranny great car gets about 30 32 highway too better looking than a focus thats for sure
I agree with all of the above but the last part about the Focus. I think they are equally not so good looking. That being said, I'd put a 29 year old Pinto against a 29 year old Focus (if we could go into the future) and I'd bet the Pinto would be in better condition.
lol actually the pinto didnt burst into flames more often than any other car during that period. It was the notorious ford damage coverup that got it into trouble.
Yeah,an internal memo tripped them up.Before 1982,when all cars sold in America had to meet the same smog and safety standards as all cars made in America, only Honda,Volvo and VW had full lines of cars thatr did so.Pre-82 Toyota Corollas were also notorious for the "exploding thing",as were a few others.
If I rememeber what my friend Wayne said many years ago... the MPG figures were for the Pinto Pony. It had a manual tranny, maybe 4 speed?, and a high ratio rear end to get that kind of mileage.

Correction: Retired @ age 59. Placed a total of 600-700 thousand miles on the 5 pinto/bobcat wagons. Model years 74-80.

@Rtrt67: I think the Pinto was an attractive little car. I don't see the focus as being nearly as nice a looking car.

@gearheadmatt . Did FORD correct the gas tanks from blowing up. That's probably why 1980 was the last year for the car, don't ya think. LOL

Why they even tried to sell a Pinto by 1980 is beyond me. It would basically be like trying to sell people asbestos.

It usually only burst into flames if rear-ended there was a fault with the gas tank.
Did they say the Knieval family? As in Evel Knieval???
