I had an S60R and it is without doubt better than any T5 (also had one of them).
The engine is far different than the T5!
It has a larger turbo, reversed intercooler pipe, it's bored out bigger, it has forged internals, has better cooling and so on, the list is endless. However they do have problems with the cylinder liners cracking 3&5 generally. I suffered from this fault.
My S60R sounded much better than the T5 I had, and that had loads of exhaust mods etc..
The 2.5ltr R engine was bored out from a 2.3ltr block. Great sound, but the open-deck design and tight block killed the car. Volvo took a lot of broken blocks back in the first couple years. It's a shame as the firm probably will never push for "performance" models again.

Oh the engine in this car is a better version of the original T5, it's just built to give more performance and supposedly stronger.
It still is though a T5 "inline 5 cylinder turbo!"

It's easy to recognize whether is a R or a T5, a R has original orange color seat, while a T5 don't have.

The R isn't a T5 at all, it's got a bigger engine and has four wheel drive for a start...

@morse778 When I say "R" I'm talking about the the engine.. not the vehicle itself so no need to talk about awd.
The "R" engine is based off of the T5 engine FACT.. no ever said the engines are identical.

its a variation of the t5.. so technically it is a t5 with some diffrences.
sound wise.. theyre pretty much identical.
