Haters, you're forgetting that they were recording to tape, not Pro Tools. They recorded this way not because Lars sucks, but that they set the bar so high that it needed an excessive amount of editing to capture. I should point out that most of your favorite records today have drum tracks that are edited down to the millisecond in Pro Tools.
I will tell you guys and gals one thing that you can take to the bank....Lars Ulrich isn't the most technical, precise drummer, but ...And Justice and the Black Album's drum sound was a REVOLUTION! Absolutely, without a doubt, Lars is responsible for creating the most innovative kick drum sounds (Justice/Black) and snare sound (Black album) to date!

Lars is such an annoying drummer, every fill is shit and he never hits in between snare hits, he always hits a cymbal with the snare in beat. get inventive lars. Plus, if you have a double kick use it!
I guess the disappointing thing here is that they had to cut and paste sections, fills, and other things to create the track for Enter Sandman. Really? It just doesn't seem like something the Metallica that recorded Ride the Lightning, Master of Puppets, and ...And Justice For All would have done. Pretty weak in my mind.

@DavySolaris ??? their albums sound great (for the time) except Death Magnetic. Drums are always recorded in sections. Play, record, tune.. play, record, tune.. change skins.. etc. Thats how you get a great sound.. even/loud hits. Now its possible to record drums in one take (shitty take/shitty sloppy drummer) then sample replace/edit and end up with a great take, but its better to get a good sound from the start.
@DavySolaris The Drums may be a bit simple, but they match the feel of the songs perfectly which is much better than just a drummer who "needs" to show off his skills by putting thousands of double bass hits into a song in which they just don't fit. Also, i don't know what type of speakers you're using, but through my studio monitors the drumtrack of enter sandman for example sounds deep, clear and powerfull as fuck.
What a bunch of copy and paste, 50 mic, 50 take lame bullshit.... I bought the big 4 dvd not long ago to watch Megadeth kick some major ass and when it got to Metallica it was just a symphony of lame... the big "build up" of the show is the song "One" and Lars not playing half of the songs drum track live... he doesn't even play the bass drum 1/16th notes in the middle which is the "highlight" of that song... he leaves it to the bass guitar and rhythm guitar to cover his lack of ability. LAME!!!

A miracle it was a pile of shit with the bass drum on 1 and 3 and the snare on 2 and 4. 50 mics u could get that sound out of an electric drum kit. The was a tiny bit of reverb that didn't need the room to be changed and Lars is so shit he couldn't play the whole thing in one go. Total load of bullshit
4 or 5 drum takes and they'd have to replace the drum heads? That's a load of crap, even if they were thin single-ply heads they wouldn't be that beat up. Drum heads are meant to last months, not half an hour.

@DimebagVision : actually I have really nice stuff.. UA preamp, vintech preamp, beyer mic, AKG mic, RODE mic and a bunch of nice instruments. My setup is pretty sweet for not having a "real" studio. This just teaches you a lesson not to get trapped in the whole recording process. The beatles would generally have two or three mics on the drums. And they're better than metallica could ever dream of. "hush little baby don't say a word... and never mind that noise you heard... haha total joke.
You're talking about different time frames. And the "hush little baby......" is a nursery rhyme turned band and "Now i lay me down to sleep....." is a prayer. So what if Metallica wanted to take advantage of a bunch of equipment for this album. If you don't like it, make your own album and see how well you do.

Why would we listen to the recording techniques of Metallica? Not only do his drums sound like crap on the albums, Lars is one of the worst drummers to ever make it into a successful band! i think a lot of people dont get why they need so many takes for 1 song on an album. When they play Enter Sandman live it also sounds powerful while it's live. But album songs are listened to by very simple stereo's or headphones. So it needs to sounds very powerful even through a very cheap stereo. But with a live concert you have hundreds of huge speakers wich cost thousands of dollars per speaker. So making a metal band sound powerful live is much easier than on an album.

@KDUBsSpirits umm, obviously he can... he does it every time they play a show. what they were saying is they wanted every slight nuance of the recording to be perfect, and they wanted to be able to experement with different fills. this was before it was commonplace to cut in a new snare hit if it didnt have the perfect crack. Im not backing him up becase im a big metallica loving fag. Thats just how truely great recordings are made. period.

And after all this bullshit, we have an album with boring as fuck drums. Yeah, great "intensity" guys. The whole video is a euphemism for "Lars is a unreliable as fuck drummer". The "3 or 4 takes before we had to change the skins" stuff is horseshit, if drum tone was such a big deal to them why do the end results sound like fucking paper? Deary fucking me. Ulrich's a douchebag anyway.

@DavySolaris ??? their albums sound great (for the time) except Death Magnetic. Drums are always recorded in sections. Play, record, tune.. play, record, tune.. change skins.. etc. Thats how you get a great sound.. even/loud hits. Now its possible to record drums in one take (shitty take/shitty sloppy drummer) then sample replace/edit and end up with a great take, but its better to get a good sound from the start.

@DavySolaris The Drums may be a bit simple, but they match the feel of the songs perfectly which is much better than just a drummer who "needs" to show off his skills by putting thousands of double bass hits into a song in which they just don't fit. Also, i don't know what type of speakers you're using, but through my studio monitors the drumtrack of enter sandman for example sounds deep, clear and powerfull as fuck.

What a bunch of copy and paste, 50 mic, 50 take lame bullshit.... I bought the big 4 dvd not long ago to watch Megadeth kick some major ass and when it got to Metallica it was just a symphony of lame... the big "build up" of the show is the song "One" and Lars not playing half of the songs drum track live... he doesn't even play the bass drum 1/16th notes in the middle which is the "highlight" of that song... he leaves it to the bass guitar and rhythm guitar to cover his lack of ability. LAME!!!

...and he'd be right. I mean, they play way differently; they had different roles, kinda--Townshend played simpler stuff than James Hetfield does, so Keith Moon could kinda solo over everything, whereas Lars has to hold down the beat more.

A miracle it was a pile of shit with the bass drum on 1 and 3 and the snare on 2 and 4. 50 mics u could get that sound out of an electric drum kit. The was a tiny bit of reverb that didn't need the room to be changed and Lars is so shit he couldn't play the whole thing in one go. Total load of bullshit

4 or 5 drum takes and they'd have to replace the drum heads? That's a load of crap, even if they were thin single-ply heads they wouldn't be that beat up. Drum heads are meant to last months, not half an hour.

@WhenxChristxReturnsx yeah, cause he beats the crap out of them, that they have to change the skins cause they he rather wears it out and the skin starts to sound raw and terrible... or he puts the stick through the skin (because he uses metal instead of wood). I have a mate who does the exact same thing, he goes through skins at least 3 every week.

@DimebagVision : actually I have really nice stuff.. UA preamp, vintech preamp, beyer mic, AKG mic, RODE mic and a bunch of nice instruments. My setup is pretty sweet for not having a "real" studio. This just teaches you a lesson not to get trapped in the whole recording process. The beatles would generally have two or three mics on the drums. And they're better than metallica could ever dream of. "hush little baby don't say a word... and never mind that noise you heard... haha total joke.

Heya friends ... I worked in this studio and worked on their record in 93'. These guys are REALLY passionate about tone ... on LOAD they spent 2 weeks on kick drum tones.
We have a series on recording featuring the guy who designed the room where they tracked LOAD and the next 3-4 records. And was the head tech of the studio during this time. GREAT info on making pro records ... check out our channel SecretPros

Why would we listen to the recording techniques of Metallica? Not only do his drums sound like crap on the albums, Lars is one of the worst drummers to ever make it into a successful band! I'm sure all the Metallica lovers are going to come out and whine, but do yourself a favor and actually learn something about drums, then we'll talk. Lars is an absolute mess on a drumset.

and everybody whos bitching about cutting and pasting and the fact that lars isnt fast on double bass and stuff, come on.. he's getting older. and Dave Lombardo is probablly much healthier. And they have different styles.. And the cutting and pasting thingy.. this album is from an era when they didnt have computers or technology that we have nowadays. The sound quallity and power from this record was kinda renewing. Now you can do this on your computer, but 20 years of technology is a big gap

i think a lot of people dont get why they need so many takes for 1 song on an album. When they play Enter Sandman live it also sounds powerful while it's live. But album songs are listened to by very simple stereo's or headphones. So it needs to sounds very powerful even through a very cheap stereo. But with a live concert you have hundreds of huge speakers wich cost thousands of dollars per speaker. So making a metal band sound powerful live is much easier than on an album.

Dave Lombardo, though hasn't slowed down with the feet at all; him and possibly others, like Benante or Megadeth drummers. And those songs are quite a bit tougher than Metallica.
