  • Great vidio. Cool info. Lots of great ideas. Thanx

  • sad

  • James pst get a drummer.

  • Wow you must be a redarded Metallica fan lol. James isnt talking 2:44-2:46 its Uh uh uh Lars uh uh uh lol.

  • 2:44-2:46 james is like, "Fuck You"

  • Lars your worthless. How dare they compare Lars to Moon or Bohnam are you fucking kidding me? Fucking sack of dogshit. Fuck Lars Fuck Metallica and Fuck these ass kissing producers. Garbage ass shit.

  • Bob Rock is the fucking God!!!!!!!

  • This is pathetic.

  • It's amusing how Bob Rock tries to justify Lars' poor drumming

  • Well u are wrong radiosant bob rock can play he played the bass guitar on st anger cd when jason left the band do your homework before u point the finger and talk smack about someone u know nothing about

  • They had to cut and paste his parts because he sucks too much to be able to play the song all the way through on tabe.

  • they spend the whole segment talking up the drum part for the song and then this dummy talks over the entire thing. we get it, you can't play an instrument so you need to convince the world that your contributions matter, too.

shut the fuck up and let the musicians do their thing

  • I don't know why everyone says Lars is a shitty drummer... Maybe everyone in the world thinks drums should be a simple beat to highlight the other band members... Idk as a drummer I respect and take influence from Lars, I always have. He has a feel and a grove, I can name a dozen other drummers that are stiff, have no feeling in their songs, and drummers that add WAY to much to their songs... I think Lars always had this well rounded talent that never was to much or to little, and I think that

  • @militia814 Check out the band "MuteMath". Their drummer Darren King is a ridiculously good drummer. Lots of feel and groove and extremely original playing. Perfect example of how a drummer can be passionate and push it to the very limits of almost adding too much without actually overplaying.

  • pause at 0:42-0:43............hilarious!

  • you can keep your "zillions"! what a pain in the ass to deal with bob rock and lars ulrich!!! holy balls!! They need to get a room and just get it over with. Then maybe they could get back to making real records!!

  • @corjslik96 I'll bet a hundred bucks that if you asked Lars Ulrich his opinion, he'd say John Bonham was better.

  • This is a fucking joke.... Listening to these idiots is hilarious.... Talk about taking "artistic licence" to new levels.... blah blah blah.... Total bullshit, overly complicated and soulless. BIG BIG BIG thumbs to you down Bob "Shlock"

  • Hetfield seems to be sucks cool dude - Lars seems such a wanker..... LOL

  • @corjslik96 You're right. Ive only been playing guitar since I was 4, toured with Jon Aderson of YES, toured with Living Colour, played at Lollapalooza and played at a Frank Zappa festival in German...I know absolutely nothing about music. You can't even spell Zeppelin right so why would anybody even take you seriously? John Bonham's name is mentioned everywhere for a reason you fucking ingrate. HE PIONEERED HEAVY ROCK DRUMMING! It isnt that hard to understand. Metallica listens to Led Zeppelin.

  • Lars is the stiffest drummer I have ever heard "get a swing goin dude"

  • @corjslik96

Haha you're fucking insane. John Bonham created power drumming...without Bonham there wouldn't be most of the rock drummers today. Go listen to some more Nickelback faggot.

  • If it took me 50 takes to record these drums, I would cut my arms off. Any drummer of 2 years experience should be able to play enter sandman flawlessly. If you can't, give up the drums. Their egos are unreal, as are their thoughts of Lars' abilities.

  • @yourashero :))))))) yeah...except that any drummer when makes a song is in the same situation as lars. i know, i had a bad also and it's not as simple as you think...even if you have the skills. so, if you're not a drummer...only a copycat drummer, STFU!!! I hope to hear your creative masterpieces soon =)))))

  • "the drumming thing, with the guitars, and the music" yes. that is what it is.

  • When do they explain anything about recording drums? I did not want to just hear these wankers prattle on. Also stfu

  • "Lars play to the music" LOL Yeah right!

  • douche bag cunt

  • he look like christopher walken

  • i love that i can recorded my music at my sweet room in my sweet chair take all the time and takes i need with no worries about other band members or a producer , i love being a 1 man band XD

  • Haters, you're forgetting that they were recording to tape, not Pro Tools. They recorded this way not because Lars sucks, but that they set the bar so high that it needed an excessive amount of editing to capture. I should point out that most of your favorite records today have drum tracks that are edited down to the millisecond in Pro Tools.

  • I've never seen Lars Ulrich as a drummer. More like a buissnessman that plays drums from time to time as a hobby.

  • haha this is the proof that lars sucks. fifty takes.. come on

  • I will tell you guys and gals one thing that you can take to the bank....Lars Ulrich isn't the most technical, precise drummer, but ...And Justice and the Black Album's drum sound was a REVOLUTION! Absolutely, without a doubt, Lars is responsible for creating the most innovative kick drum sounds (Justice/Black) and snare sound (Black album) to date!

  • @ragzy02 Well revolutionary is one term that could be used.

I, for one, prefer "nasty as hell", or in some cases "mind numbingly intolerable".

But as they say, it truly is a matter of taste (or lack of therefore).

But Metallica did create new sound for the genre (or possibly the whole genre of popwhattahellhardrock) and for that we salute them.

  • @txhp im sorry did you just say metallica create and pop in the same phrase? if by pop u meant thrash metal then yes you are right

  • @liveandletrock864 Pop means popular, go die.

  • @Loodba he probably should have said popular then. dumbass

  • @liveandletrock864 I'm done with you... Noob

  • @Loodba noob what are u four? hahaha is that suppost to insult me? if u wanna offend me your gonna have to put some effort intto it

  • @liveandletrock864 I don't want to insult you at all. I have better to do srsly.

  • @Loodba you are aware that your the one who started this right? u dont wanna waist time to insult me.....so then you waist time to insult me? i like your thought process

  • Comment removed

  • Lars looks and sounds like a mega business man, not a rock n' roll drummer.

  • I'd love to see the face of Dave Lombardo or any other real drummer regardless of genre when some producer says "Now, Dave, on this album where doing the drums like this ..." hahaha. he'll just punch the producers face in. With a good reason!

As for Lars Ulrich's drumming I only say: he should have stuck with playing tennis. : )

    /watch?v=c4sUNEMj68w

    &

    /watch?v=ZZLCVFhXfo8&NR=1

the sound is bad but 2:12-2:25 ... Lars Ulrich was about to lose his job right there?

  • lars sucks his own dick, james looks like a lion ,kirk liked orange and passionfruit deepspring fizzy drink, that is all

  • Lars is such an annoying drummer, every fill is shit and he never hits in between snare hits, he always hits a cymbal with the snare in beat. get inventive lars. Plus, if you have a double kick use it!

  • @SportMusicnut93 quit whining dumbass

You clearly don't know alot about drumming or hearing

  • @CanineVideos

I actually know a lot more than you would mate

He is sloppy, lazy and grossly repetitive

  • @SportMusicnut93 his drumming is simple and repetitive in a lot of songs

but saying he didn't use double bass drumming is plain stupid. Check out Battery, The Four Horsemen, Damage Inc.

  • I dont remember lars not talking

  • I guess the disappointing thing here is that they had to cut and paste sections, fills, and other things to create the track for Enter Sandman. Really? It just doesn't seem like something the Metallica that recorded Ride the Lightning, Master of Puppets, and ...And Justice For All would have done. Pretty weak in my mind.

  • @heashon2000 Have you ever had to track something in studio?

  • @sammcl16890 Yes, things like guitar solos, bass lines (my band has recorded two full-length CDs) and vocals. We never did what they had described with drums however. Tracking a straight beat and then adding fills later? I don't get it. In addition to that, we didn't have an endless recording budget. The point is that Lars should have been able to do these songs in 2-3 takes considering the difficulty. He's a pro, and I've heard/seen him pull off more impressive things.

  • @heashon2000 Have you ever had to track onto tape though?

  • @sammcl16890 Both of our albums were recorded to tape.

  • Bob Fucking Rock!!!!!!!!! God of Production!

  • I just realized... Kirk's really short

  • How could the recordings remain in sync?

  • he's so fucking annoying!!!

  • lars is horrible

  • Bob said everything that ever needs to be said about Lars .

  • Metallica drum recording,

Step 1: put an overrated, undertalented drummer in a room with a drum set and a slow click track. Tell him to play simple 4/4 beats for an hour.

    Step 2: Edit.

  • @851852093114208513 100% true

  • @851852093114208513: are you just jealous cause hes in one of the biggest bands in the world, even if he is shit how does it effect you?.if you've got nothing nice to say then don't say anything at all.

  • @tommW13 Aw, did I personally offend you? Does the little baby get offended when people insult the bands he likes? Hey, I like Metallica. That doesn't mean that Lars is as good as he thinks he is.

  • @851852093114208513: don't call me a fucking baby,i know he has a bit of a ego sometimes, but complaining about if hes shit or not is gonna change things nor make you go further in life.your the one who looks like a idiot atm,do you spend your hole day looking for lars ulrich videos to bag him on?? hmmm seems that way.if you dont like his personality then just listen to the music then

  • @tommW13 Successful troll is successful. Thanks. Although, this is actually the only "Lars" video I've watched lately, I just felt like poking fun at the guy and waiting for his fans to get all hot in the balls about it.

  • @851852093114208513:yeah i agree its funny to poke at him but i get annoyed when i see a bad comment about him every metallica video.

  • @tommW13 That's why you take it in stride and don't feed the trolls. ;)

  • @851852093114208513:what do you mean stride?,

  • @851852093114208513 Go and watch /watch?v=pCjSw_Z9cDc that's totaly a simple 4/4 beat!

  • @snutt3n Actually, it is. That's a very basic 4/4 punk beat.

  • @851852093114208513 Lars ulrich is probally the BEST dummer EVER!

  • @atlronaldodrengen620 Sorry, I ran out of troll food. You could pretend I gave you an imaginary cookie, or something, though... If you want...

  • there is a great drummer from el salvador, you guys might know him,his name is pete sandoval,he is morvid angel's drummer,he is a beast, its great to be salvadoran,we are fast...

  • You know who doesn't have to cut and paste drums? Gene Hoglan, Sean Reinert, Roddy and pretty much every other self respecting metal drummer you fucking pussy!! Reach for perfection you twats!

  • 2:30 ROFL

  • Great info and advice, Thanks guys!! Big up to Big Mick!! The live sound maestro!

  • DUDE you are Stoned!! lol

  • hetfield cracks me up. i bet he was a blast to drink with

  • The Black Album is the best sounding record of all time.

  • 1:45 "to get a drum track with that much intensity in one take would be nothing short of a miracle"?? really? it's more like "to get a drummer to play with the intensity and skill Metallica deserves would be a miracle, lol

  • bob rock looks REALLY high in this interview

  • that many mics? for a lousy sound

  • @lovestospooge646 Lousy sound? Are you deaf or just listen to hip hop or something? The drums on the black album are MASSIVE and awesome. There's a reason why drummers have tried to emulate that sound for years.

  • @TrollingYourButt slayer has better sounding drums..

  • @lovestospooge646 Slayer typically has good sounding drums, can't say that for their guitars, but they've never had that massive thundering drum sound the black album has

  • @TrollingYourButt ehhh i guess you have a point -_-

  • @TrollingYourButt have you ever heard the kick in ...and justice for all. freakin orgasmic

  • I came to this video to watch 6:04 again :D

  • Hes a drummer, not a percussionist and where is the sodding bass on the recording? Dreadful.

  • To honest the drums sound rubbish.

  • @tubingtheworld to be honest. slow down man.

  • Lars, your such a douche bag. Get over yourself.

  • Everyone here are just whining because they aint makin zillions of dollars like lars does

  • @lothfors Yh......all becuase he has been leeching off of the great musicians in that band of his.....

  • @lothfors No, people are whining because Lars sucks ass.

  • For drummers who are looking to get good quality recordings cheap, I'd recommend the M-Audio Fast Track Ultra 8r interface. Great quality, and no latency issues. If you're interested, check out the mic test I made.

  • lars isnt a drummer! hes a surfer!!! haahaha =p

  • Wow they basically just came out and said...he can't do his parts in one take. Embarrassing.

  • @KDUBsSpirits umm, obviously he can... he does it every time they play a show. what they were saying is they wanted every slight nuance of the recording to be perfect, and they wanted to be able to experement with different fills. this was before it was commonplace to cut in a new snare hit if it didnt have the perfect crack. Im not backing him up becase im a big metallica loving fag. Thats just how truely great recordings are made. period.

  • And after all this bullshit, we have an album with boring as fuck drums. Yeah, great "intensity" guys. The whole video is a euphemism for "Lars is a unreliable as fuck drummer". The "3 or 4 takes before we had to change the skins" stuff is horseshit, if drum tone was such a big deal to them why do the end results sound like fucking paper? Deary fucking me. Ulrich's a douchebag anyway.

  • @DavySolaris ??? their albums sound great (for the time) except Death Magnetic. Drums are always recorded in sections. Play, record, tune.. play, record, tune.. change skins.. etc. Thats how you get a great sound.. even/loud hits. Now its possible to record drums in one take (shitty take/shitty sloppy drummer) then sample replace/edit and end up with a great take, but its better to get a good sound from the start.

  • @DavySolaris Does Lars have down syndrome?

  • @DavySolaris The Drums may be a bit simple, but they match the feel of the songs perfectly which is much better than just a drummer who "needs" to show off his skills by putting thousands of double bass hits into a song in which they just don't fit. Also, i don't know what type of speakers you're using, but through my studio monitors the drumtrack of enter sandman for example sounds deep, clear and powerfull as fuck.

  • Lars is such a shithead it's ridiculous

  • lol at 2:44 he says " Wecords" instead of Records

  • lars is a prick

  • lars=joke

  • They all say "Uhmmm" And swallow loudly

  • Shittiest drummer in rock with the biggest ego. What a fucking tool.

  • did he REALLY compared that motherfucker to Keith Moon and John Bonham? Sorry, Lars. You do your job, but you're not a god.

  • @Theseventhknight i think he was just talking about lars' approach to the music more than his actual playing ability

  • @Theseventhknight He's better than Keith Moon.

  • @metalmike83 I'll bet a thousand bucks that Lars would say that Keith Moon is way better than he is.

...and he'd be right. I mean, they play way differently; they had different roles, kinda--Townshend played simpler stuff than James Hetfield does, so Keith Moon could kinda solo over everything, whereas Lars has to hold down the beat more.

  • @Theseventhknight Buddy, this is 2011. They had their time, and Lars has his. Lars is a better drummer overall.

  • 6:03 "Off to never never land" ok I'm happy.

  • i like the album

i just think the cut and paste thing for putting tracks together kinda sucked some of the human touch outta the takes

  • Bob Rock = David St. Hubbins.

  • @donosborn I was thinking the same thing!

  • A miracle it was a pile of shit with the bass drum on 1 and 3 and the snare on 2 and 4. 50 mics u could get that sound out of an electric drum kit. The was a tiny bit of reverb that didn't need the room to be changed and Lars is so shit he couldn't play the whole thing in one go. Total load of bullshit

  • 4 or 5 drum takes and they'd have to replace the drum heads? That's a load of crap, even if they were thin single-ply heads they wouldn't be that beat up. Drum heads are meant to last months, not half an hour.

  • @WhenxChristxReturnsx Drums skins man... he said drum skins man. :)

  • @TheRacsta As in the paint skins on the actual drums?

  • @WhenxChristxReturnsx yeah, cause he beats the crap out of them, that they have to change the skins cause they he rather wears it out and the skin starts to sound raw and terrible... or he puts the stick through the skin (because he uses metal instead of wood). I have a mate who does the exact same thing, he goes through skins at least 3 every week.

  • @TheRacsta I think you're getting skinds mixed with heads. If he put the stick through the paint skin on the drum it would have to go through the actual drum also O_o But yeah, this is another reason I don't use metal sticks, they dent heads like hammers. I feel bad for your friend, his wallet must hate his drum kit XD

  • @WhenxChristxReturnsx I think he still used wood sticks for the black album, but i can''t remember

  • 50 mics and Rebuilding the room with plywood?! Doing 50 takes and editing the best bits?! WTF? It would have still sounded good if they hadn't done that. Listen to the raw drumbeat @ 4:40. Sounds like a drumbeat with a bit of reverb... not too complicated to get that sound with good producing/engineering. 50 fucking mics. Total joke.

  • @freezazoid

U mad cuz you don't have lots of equipment to use?

  • @DimebagVision : actually I have really nice stuff.. UA preamp, vintech preamp, beyer mic, AKG mic, RODE mic and a bunch of nice instruments. My setup is pretty sweet for not having a "real" studio. This just teaches you a lesson not to get trapped in the whole recording process. The beatles would generally have two or three mics on the drums. And they're better than metallica could ever dream of. "hush little baby don't say a word... and never mind that noise you heard... haha total joke.

  • @freezazoid

You're talking about different time frames. And the "hush little baby......" is a nursery rhyme turned band and "Now i lay me down to sleep....." is a prayer. So what if Metallica wanted to take advantage of a bunch of equipment for this album. If you don't like it, make your own album and see how well you do.

  • I like Lars. He is a great drummer . After touring the world time and time again, and selling over 100 million albums, do you think he really cares what people say ? I know he doesn't ...

  • Heya friends ... I worked in this studio and worked on their record in 93'. These guys are REALLY passionate about tone ... on LOAD they spent 2 weeks on kick drum tones.

We have a series on recording featuring the guy who designed the room where they tracked LOAD and the next 3-4 records. And was the head tech of the studio during this time. GREAT info on making pro records ... check out our channel SecretPros

  • Damn just shut up about Lars, we all like Metallica right? So what the fuck are we bitching about.

  • Why would we listen to the recording techniques of Metallica? Not only do his drums sound like crap on the albums, Lars is one of the worst drummers to ever make it into a successful band! I'm sure all the Metallica lovers are going to come out and whine, but do yourself a favor and actually learn something about drums, then we'll talk. Lars is an absolute mess on a drumset.

  • @drumguyrobc I'm totally agree with you man.

  • @drumguyrobc you are so right xD

  • 0:43 Lars swallows! :P

  • And lars was ment to play kinda shit on this album! They were all keeping it basic and not too hard FUCK, justice for all was the album b4 this and that was fuckin awesome;). He is still a good drummer, better than u fgts hating him

  • @patw586 If you knew anything about drums, you would know how terrible he is.

  • Ahaha the guy just turns off hetfields voice, then hetfield turns it back on=] WTF lol

  • No more Bob Rock, please.

  • and everybody whos bitching about cutting and pasting and the fact that lars isnt fast on double bass and stuff, come on.. he's getting older. and Dave Lombardo is probablly much healthier. And they have different styles.. And the cutting and pasting thingy.. this album is from an era when they didnt have computers or technology that we have nowadays. The sound quallity and power from this record was kinda renewing. Now you can do this on your computer, but 20 years of technology is a big gap

  • i think a lot of people dont get why they need so many takes for 1 song on an album. When they play Enter Sandman live it also sounds powerful while it's live. But album songs are listened to by very simple stereo's or headphones. So it needs to sounds very powerful even through a very cheap stereo. But with a live concert you have hundreds of huge speakers wich cost thousands of dollars per speaker. So making a metal band sound powerful live is much easier than on an album.

  • Lars Ulrich.. prized pretentious twat.

  • Lars is like Keith Moon??? huh? is you on crack Bob?

  • "That much intensity in one take" being a Miracle? WTF?

Lars plays with a Drum Click for fucks sake!

  • Lars sucks dick........

  • Lars's knee looks fake at the start

  • @awesomespursfan35 lol yeah,

  • that 84 people love justin bieber

  • cut & paste, kinda like lip syncing. pompuss dueche

  • @sniffy45 that doesn't make sense, the fact of the matter is, EVERYBODY HAS DONE IT, for goodness sakes, ever since technology advanced enough that you could do it, they did. and lars still plays these things live, there is no reason you should be bashing on him. So, YA. \m/

  • @Loser448 I agree, copy paste is fine; Lars, however, doesn't play the same live. I saw a clip of Dyers Eve, pretty recent; that fast double bass part was completely gone, he only played a quarter of it.

  • @AspiringRocker729

    Hes old...45ish...he has arthritis...HES LAZY...

    it happens.

  • @Loser448 True, and fair enough. Arthritis though? Really? That's news to me.

Dave Lombardo, though hasn't slowed down with the feet at all; him and possibly others, like Benante or Megadeth drummers. And those songs are quite a bit tougher than Metallica.

  • @AspiringRocker729

    Yes Arthritis... in his knee.

    And yes...lars ulrich doesn't practice at all...lol

  • He's an ass clown! He has some people fooled into thinking he's actually a good drummer...

  • Off to never never land, xD
