as far as high labor cost, have you took a look at what the dentist charges for a filling, how about the cost of medical bills. Have you ever been inside of a factory and dealt with the chemicals that these people breath, another thing is that the statement that has been made about them making $75.00 an hour is completely untrue. the average wage of a US auto worker is less then that of the CAW's and they have national health care. Auto workers built this country and they will take it down.
the labor costs GM buys is the main cause of its failure...for example; due to high labor cost GM uses cheap materials in order to off set the labor cost., and also GM investments have been hit hard. Auto workers have to sarfice and give up some pay, benefits, and some healthcare if we want to save the Amercian auto industry. Now that labor cost reduced after this bankruptcy, GM and the other two Amercian auto companies can get up and fight to get their share of the auto market.
You dont have to buy Gm cars, but when GM and the other US auto companies go under where will your job be. The Union fought for everyone's pay and benefits, not just the auto workers. For someone to say they deserve to go under is a very stupid statement, coming from an American. *their Volt is still slave to a gasoline engine, has 1/4 of the range of the EV1 (without gas)
*They cannot use the NiMH battery technology that GM used to have a stake in, because they sold it to Texaco Oil.
*GM ignored the soaring oil prices and went on with 'business-as-usual" manufacturing gass-guzzlers, making GM lose 90% of its share price and $85M.

Jobs are nice and all but with all this bailout money being handed out it means that our children and grandchidren's future has been mortgaged by these stupid CEO's and their stupid companies. There are plenty of better cars out there like Honda, Toyota, Nissan and Mazda.

Ford was smart not to take the bailout because accepting it would give the government a level of control.
As for GM and Chrysler, they should've declared chp. 11 long ago when it was obvious that their cash burn was exceeding their income and, as a result, they were running out.
That, at least, would force the UAW back to the bargaining table for fruitful negotiation.
As for customers, there'd be a PR campaign saying that the chp. 11 is a step towards a leaner, meaner, more competitive GM.

Hopefully, Ford will refuse assistance next year. As it stands right now, GM and Chrysler are basically already dead if they can't stand up on their own and must be propped up by the government.
Or, in the case of GM, taken apart and sold off piece by piece. Our democratically run government has become one of the things they claim they abhor; corporate raiders.

I'm all for restructuring GM to save this critical American company. However, the Gov't has no business whatsoever meddling in the affairs of the private sector- regardless if strings are attached with bailout money or not. Just look at the great work out Gov't, Rep or Dem has done in the past and my assertion is adequately supported.
