Ben and Sera were just as troubled and they just clicked. In reality, there's probably no "Sera" anywhere for "Ben". I'm a pretty lonely guy and a hard drinker so watching this film makes me particularly sad. Still, one of the greatest films I know. I love a balance between tragedy and humor. Resulted in great beauty.

You should also look for the film "Stormy Monday" but director Mike Figgis. Wonderful film and soundtrack. Evokes a similar kind of beautiful sadness in the tragedy that so often is part of life.

This movie is very hard to watch. But that's what makes it so good. Two broken people get togehter and fall in love. This movie never tells us why the Nic Cage character is so depressed. All we know he was married and he has a kid. He never talks about it. It leaves the views to think his ex wife left him(becuz of his drinking, maybe we don't know). The lonely hooker's life is so sad. She gets beatup by her pimp and johns. The first "nice guy" she meets is a suicidal drunk.

Don't forget Elisabeth Shue. Her role isn't as flashy as Cage's, but she is an equal partner in this film ... and holds her own with Cage.

I show this film in my classes and so many of my students just become overwhelmed by it. They love it, and so do I. One of my favorite films of the 90s.
