government affects our health already and is in our lives and telling us what to do purely through the actions of its politics. For instance, Importing sugar has become a problem because we don't get along with major sugar producing countries. So government subsidizes American corn farmers and we get a cheap sweetener called high fructose corn syrup which gets pumped into everything including food that isn't sweet because its bulks up food and adds texture.
A better idea would be to tell people the truth about sugar and carbohydrate and put danger warnings on everything that contains it, including the buns on burgers. The calories are a smoke screen.
It is difficult to argue against something like that, but common sense means different things to different people. Credit crunches do happen not so more because of unsupervised capitalism, but because of a nanny state which don't give people a chance to learn from their own mistakes. A nanny state won't prevent stupidity from happening and has this side effect of keeping people ignorant as they will rely on the nanny state's common sense when things do take a bad turn.
I agree that it's an excellent idea to require posting of Nutrition Facts.
The FDA could issue a simple rule to accomplish this.
Why does it have to be in this big Healthcare Bill?
The thing people are concerned about, is that if we hand over control of our Healthcare to the Govt....then the Govt can use that as an excuse to snoop into our lives to determine if we are living a 'healthy lifestyle'.
It looks like BigBrother is luring us into the black limo with candy.
You have to remember too that food makers also put in chemicals that keep you wanting the food. For people who eat this trash, they are adicted to it and some of them can not stop. These processed foods are so loaded with stuff that it would take most of use years to get off them. Sugar is the other white stuff! We wouldnt need a health bill if they would close down the fake food factories.
Here's how I see it. The gov't should not have their hands in it. It should be the resturants decision (of which many have complied). Keep the gov't out of it because I don't need them policing my calorie count. If you do, okay, sign up to let them. And for cigarettes that was wrong from the begining because you even had Doctors advertising and supporting smoking either as their habit or by paid consent. You don't see that with fast food.
McDonalds doesn't want to reveal how many calories are in their food. I suspect they provide conservative journalists with ready made opinions and talking points.
