  • I have the exact same model u use in the tutorial (scph-5000/n). It had trouble loading some games, and I know it's games that work because sometimes they load and others i have to restart the console various times to start. Also the game will freeze wich I fix by ejecting the disk. I cleaned the console as in ur tutorial. Now the games only opens to the menus and then it stills at the loading screen. wich tutorial or fix do u recomend? Can I replace parts from a surplus scph-30001R?

  • @RAYMONDCASILLAS

Did you also try the lubricating steps outlined in the tutorial?

As for the parts from a SCPH-30001 R and a SCPH-50001, if you mean the optical pickup, unfortunately no.

You can take a pickup from a 50001 (KHS-400C or HD7) and use it in a 30001 R, but not the other way around; the 30001 R uses the KHS-400B and it's too tall for the 50001.

  • @Watcher3223 yes, I didn't lithium grease but i tried a mixture of "3 in 1" machine oil and petroleum based Vaseline. Got rid of the grinding noise. Apparently I didn't use enough lube on the guiding optical posts. worked for some time so may have to get the lithium after all. however I'm still having this problems: whatever games play they take like 30secs - 2 mins to load and only loads some of the sound fx and some won't go beyond the loading screen. should I adjust the laser?

  • @RAYMONDCASILLAS

You shouldn't need to adjust the laser; that may be a sign the pickup is becoming marginal and may require replacement.

Was the laser left in the PS-2 or was it taken out when you tried to clean the laser pickup?

  • @RAYMONDCASILLAS yes, lift the laser assembly as I saw in other tutorial to bend down the arm with the plastic teeth to get more "bite" over the screw of the spinning gear shaft and eliminate grinding noise. I later lubed the gear shaft.

  • @Watcher3223 the console worked on most of the games before I serviced it. because it was picky with some game to play and wanted also to clean the lens and get rid of the grinding noise, so I know it was something I screwed up. I don't know if I should have lubed the long gear that shift the optical back and forth but seems to work fine, no more grinding. 1rst time I cleaned the optical I unscrewed the top lens,so that's why I think I should calibrate the laser. red error screen on some games.

  • @RAYMONDCASILLAS

Probably should have just done the lube; if it worked with most games, then the optics were likely clean enough. The grinding problem may have been due to lack of lube.

What do you mean "unscrewed the top lens?"

  • @Watcher3223 I meant I removed the tiny screw that holds the upper lens to clean the lower lens. Then used a mix of Vaseline and "3 in1" oil. Re-greased the optical guiding posts and got few games to work. Ran it with the cover off, saw the laser travel fine all over the guide posts. After a few games, it stopped working properly: games will take to long to load screens then either fail to load the game screen or load after a long time. Some games gave me the Red death screen. What's ur advice?

  • @RAYMONDCASILLAS

It may be the Vaseline. You may want to check the parts that you lubricated and see if the lubrication is getting sticky. You may have to clean off the posts and then oil the posts (don't use too much).

  • @Watcher3223 I think that's right. so u think I can just use the oil then? I'll give it a try and let u know how it goes. Thanx and have a good night's rest! ur a lifesaver, man.

  • @RAYMONDCASILLAS

Yeah, you should be able to use just the 3-in-1 on the posts after cleaning it completely of the Vaseline.

As for being a lifesaver, I'd like to think that; I guess we'll know for sure whether or not cleaning and oiling the posts helps. But, either way, thank you for your complements. I just hope this works out.

  • @Watcher3223 Good news! My ps2 is loading games like I just unpacked from the box 8 yrs ago! I was't sure it was lubrication, but ur experience reassured me, so u helped a lot. This was the problem: as I pulled the posts from the pickup assembly, I noticed it kinda stuck at the same spot like 3/4 of the way out. Took a cotton swab & removed a greenish lime from inside the copper bearings where the posts go through. thought it looked clean but it was there. Mistakenly assumed was clean enough

  • @RAYMONDCASILLAS

That's great to hear. Hope it stays like that for several more years. Yeah, those parts have to be really clean to make sure they don't jam or bind things up.

But, anyways, I'm happy to hear you've got it nailed. Here's hoping your PS-2 will spin up your games for many more years.

  • @Watcher3223 Vaseline wasn't sticky at all, but cleaned the post and remixed Vaseline & 3 in 1 oil for a more oily consistency since I'm worried the plain oil will dry out more quickly. May have to get the lithium grease after all but it's a temp fix. The Vas & 3n1 are both petroleum based, so it should hold. The clue here was that the console worked and then stopped, the only variable factor was the lubrication. Copper bearings must be cleaned thoroughly. Hope u can halp others with this info

  • Please help, i can't remove the Drive cover, what should I do?

  • @ebismanos

There should be two screws on top towards the front.

On the top towards the rear there should be two snaps, each located on each outer edge.

  • I have the same model ps2 and it works but it is lightly scratching my discs and something games get stuck in the middle of gameplay. Do I just have to follow this tutorial?

  • @descentfromhistory

Maybe, but I'm wondering why your PS2 is scratching your discs. That may suggest some kind of physical interference with the disc's rotation.

Even if the optics are dirty, that shouldn't be happening. My only guess may be the objective lens striking the disc.

With the console taken apart, you should check to see if there is anything making contact with the disc inside the drive aside from the spindle components.

  • There needs to be a love button. Thanks so much!

  • Scph-50001/n is japan? I want ps2 japan.

  • @bakerskate2

I presume you mean a Japanese-made PS2 as opposed to one that's made in China.

I don't believe Sony continued making PS2 consoles in Japan after the SCPH-39001 for the North American market; even some 39001 consoles were made in China.

  • thanks so much! Thanks to this video, I just fixed my old ps2 and was able to give it to my son and make his day!.

  • @xcalcifiedx

You're very welcome. I'm glad this video was of use and hope your son gets good use out of your old PS2.

  • hi! i have a PS2 SCPH-50001 and i turn on the console but a few second later it turn off ._. and then it didn´t get turn on anymore i don´t know what can be the problem ._. the fan is okay and how much fusibles have the PS2 ? i just saw the fusible ps16 in this console (sorry 4 my bad english >< but please help me T_T )

  • @sakur178

Don't know why your PS2 did that. First, has the console ever been opened?

Do any lights come on when the rear master switch is turned on? A red light on the power button should come on, indicating the console is in standby mode.

If it's a power supply problem, you will have to take the console apart to get to the power supply board. Depending on the problem, it may be better to replace your PS2.

  • Thanks dood. I tryed it right when i finished no success. Then my dad beat my ps2 up and got it to work xD. Just gotta thank you for showing me. PCE

  • @TheBladeZofADevil

Well, sometimes you have to beat something to get it to work again, eh?

  • @KKKSuperFan

The end of the flat band should be in a slot socket located to the right forward slightly underneath the DVD-ROM drive. You may have to lift the drive up slightly out of the bottom casing to see it.

    As always, be careful.

  • i'll send you some photos or a video of the problems on sat. or sunday.

  • @crubsout

    Okay.

But, if the PS2 requires replacement parts or has an overly complicated issue to resolve, it won't be worth the trouble or expense of repairing. Replacement consoles in the used market may be purchased for less than spending the time and money to get a broken console requiring parts running again.

  • since the spindle motor dosen't work do you consider replasement

  • @crubsout

If one may even be found.

But if parts need to be replaced, you may be better off replacing your PS2 rather than repairing it.

  • ok, but it will be probably saturday before i can take pictures or send a video.

  • the ribbon to the spindle motor was torn on the edge a little bit but not enough to interfere with the curcuit. and the other ribbon to the pickup looked like it got too hot and burnt out a wire inside the ribbon. i did remove the pannel to look underneath the pickup and spindle motor without removing the rails. i unscrewed the 4 wide screws on the sides. know what im talkin about, right?

  • @crubsout

I'll need to see good, steady pictures of the parts to really get a grasp as to what's going on.

  • so what you are saying is that you cant remove the disc spindle at all to see if there is a problem. i understand but is the problem with the pickup curcits may be the cause of only being able to read black ps1 discs?

P.S. I wont be able to check the curcits until saturday. so it may be a little while. Thanks anyway.

  • @crubsout

You shouldn't need to remove the spindle; that's not likely to be the problem.

And, it is possible that the problem might be a torn ribbon comprising the pickup circuits (not the ribbon cable).

What have you actually done to your PS2 thus far?

  • hey, me again. i know it has been awhile since we last spoke but i have time now. anyway, i checked all of the communications to the motor and the pickup and all was fine except there was a little black mark on the ribbon to the pickup. i think that is disturbing the communications to the pickup, but that is not the problem. also can you tell me a way to remove the motor itself to see if it is tangled in something like hair? thanks...

  • @crubsout

You may need to check the circuits on the pickup itself.

As for the motor, which motor? Disc spindle?

For disc spindle, removal may entail pulling the spindle out, but that can be difficult considering the magnetic pull is quite strong. In addition, it can be easily damaged if you pull on it the wrong way.

However, it's unlikely that hair may have gotten into the motor; the spindle shaft is well covered in such a way that hair may not be able to get into it to cause a problem.

  • @Watcher3223 I didn't quite catch how you opened the lens (Sony khs-400c). You said you opened some snaps. How do you do that because I am frustrated of not being able to get it open. And btw, thanks for the alcohol idea! I got so much dust off of the CD spinner thing, it's not even funny. Again, great vid!

  • @ganeev562

On the top of the shroud, there should be three holes, two below the SONY logo and one above the lens. This is where the screwdriver would go and you carefully press out to release each snap from the housing, one by one.

You must be careful, otherwise, you could damage the shroud.

However, if the PS-2 is reliably reading discs again, I wouldn't bother.

  • what can we use instead of rubbing alcohol

  • @vjlord

For the optics, you can use just water or even Windex.

But, use only VERY little fluid; just enough to slightly dampen the swab tip. Don't saturate the tip.

  • @Watcher3223 Windex, a liquid used to clean the glass.. ? U sure tht water or windex wont harm it.. Also tell me, i've many pirated cdx for ps2 but some has scratches n some dont work but few cdx work.. What shud i Do... Cant afford the original.. ::P

  • Windex or water should be safe.

So long as you don't use a swab that's dripping wet, it'll be okay.

What I do is saturate a swab and then squeeze out excess fluid.

As for scratched discs, it depends on the damage. If it's a CD and the damage is on the label side and the lacquer is breached, the disc is permanently damaged.

For CD and DVD, you can buff out scratches using a CD/DVD scratch removal kit, but it may not work with really bad scratches.

    Otherwise, the solution is replacement.

  • I checked the voltage on the copper plate, and the range from left to right was 11.2 volts, to 3.2 volts. can that be the problem? (ps. sorry for the wait, my computor was acting up.)

  • @crubsout

I don't know; I hadn't gone so far as checking voltages and, without a service manual, I can't be certain what the correct voltages should be.

  • @crubsout

However, usually the power supply to the pickup is not likely to be the problem; it would more than likely be a problem with the pickup itself.

  • yes the lens did light up. and maybe the connection got loose, but the connention wire was bent sharply in two spots, and there is a black spot that is on the pickup connector (orange strip) that was created inside the strip and is not from a marker. I did however remove the 4 screws with big plates and small creases.

  • @crubsout

You may want to check the continuity of the conductors on the ribbon connecting the motor.

I hope the sharp bend did not break one or more conductors.

  • Comment removed

  • mabe. before i started cleaning it, the white wire strip leading to the motor was straight, now it is folded sharply to reach the chip under the motor, but it wasn't loose. it was attached fine before and after

  • the lens and the pickup were fine. also when the problem occoured, i took it apart to see if the disc would spin, and it didn't. could it be a problem with the chip under the spinner? and spinning it myself didn't work.

  • @crubsout

Do you think it may be possible that the connection of the motor to the drive electronics could have been jarred loose?

  • no. The disc was spinning right after i did the cleaning in your video when the ps2 cover was off, but when i put it back on, it didn't spin.

  • @crubsout

Try spinning it with the cover off again; check to see if anything might be causing physical interference with the spindle motor.

Also, does the pickup light up when it tries to detect a disc?

  • hey, i had the same problem with the "disc read error". i tried your tutorial on my own ps2, but now the disc dosn't even rotate on the spinner. what did i do wrong and how can i fix it?

  • @crubsout

Was the pickup ever moved when it was tilted down?

  • Thank you very much for this tutorial! My PS2 played all silver discs perfectly but would not play black or blue discs. I had no idea what the problem was. I was skeptical that the laser lens needed to be cleaned since silver discs never once failed to play. But your tutorial made it look so easy to clean it that I figured I'd give it a try. And it WORKED. I can finally play my black PS1 games again. THANK YOU!!!

  • You are the MAN!

  • @hustletv

Thanks. Was this video of any help to you?

  • Thx, I'll get som lythium grease form work and lube again.

It took me two days to do all of this because I lubed the disc motor too... The first time I turned the PS2 on and tried with a disc inside... what a mess!!! Lube spilled all around and had to keep cleaning the motor, cleaning the lense, cleaning all around... and repeat. Disc inside, let it spin... cleaning again.

Now I laugh, back then, I did not. U_U

  • OMG! It took me 2 days to do all this, reading info at webs and looking at pics.

I wish I had found this video earlier. :(

    Well, now it's done.

BTW, I did use WD40 to lube the rails of the pickup... should I remove it and apply another kind of lube?

    Thx and nice video. :)

  • @Kolmo75

WD-40 may work, but the concern is that it could dry out so you may have to lube it again down the road.

You can improvise by using motor oil. Just soak a little on a swab and apply it to the rails. Don't douse the rails with oil. Just a little bit is all that's needed.

  • @Kolmo75

    And, you're welcome.

Glad the video was of help. Unfortunately, this fix won't work for everyone because there can be other things in the disc drive that can cause these problems, such as misalignment or worn parts.

  • hi can u help me?

    my ps2 games are laggy/lowframerate

ithink its not with the lens try it in HDD its still the same

does cleaning the board/unit can fix it?

  • @railtracer1

Does this occur in normal gameplay?

  • yeah?. well not all games

ex. full of explosion during gameplay

    mgs3 the fury fight

    black

  • @railtracer1

One thought might be that the system is overheating.

Does the rear exhaust fan run? And, can you see how dusty the machine is inside?

  • awesome thank you

  • My ps2 cd tray will not open. When I press the eject button it comes out a 1/4 inch like it wants to open but then goes back to the original position. I think the magnet cover over the cd tray is stopping it from opening

  • @railtracer1

    What's the model?

And it may mean that the mechanical parts might need a cleaning and a lube as well as having the belt checked (this belt is hidden under a black plastic cover between the front of the disc drive and the spindle motor).

  • thank you so so so much! my sons disc tray was open and wouldnt close,i tok it apart like u said and when you showed to slide the white bar befor putting tray back in this is what fixed it, somehow the eye , i think thats it blocked the tray and when i moved the bar the tray went in fine. when i push the eject button the tray comes out but i have to give it a tiny pull,. but when i push the button again it goes in by itself, any idea why this is?thanks againnnn for the help! aishah

  • @aishahossam

Could be that the drawer tray is not perfectly in its place in the drive or that there could be an obstruction that is inhibiting movement.

  • ok ill just take it apart again and work with it some more, my son was just too excited to get his ps2 back hehe hes 9 and u know how that goes, hell im 40 and i got excited also hehehe,, its just crazy how i can push the button and it goes in with no problem but i gotta take the tip of my nail and pul it a little when i want it to open,, hmm but ill hit at it again tomorrow,, thanksssssss for all ur help!

  • i actually have a diffrent problem

the thing that you press to reset or eject the disk tore off (the silver wire)

where am i suppossed to put it back on?

  • @eug2112

With the front facing towards you and the console horizontal, on the right side of the console just underneath the disc drive is the side of the motherboard where you may see a white slot.

The slot is about the same width as the silver ribbon cable.

This is where the ribbon cable must be plugged into.

  • my ps2 plays all games that are silvered back, but when i put in a blue colored game, when it loads it makes a scratchy noise and takes forever. any idea why? i cleaned the lens too :[ please respond. lol

  • @j0hn78121

There are two lenses that must be cleaned. The first is the objective lens (the one that bops up and down). The second is a fixed lens, which is underneath the objective lens.

In addition, you must also lubricate the kicker mechanism; the dust dries the lubrication out which can jam up the drive. Blue-bottoms (CD-ROM) require the drive to run faster and harder to achieve the same throughput as silvers (DVD-ROM).

The tutorial shows you how to do it, so watch it.

  • hey i need your help. my ps2 only works for like 2 games. i i wanna know whats worng. i bought a brand new game today and it said please insert a ps2 game disc. i cleaned it and tried it again and it took me back to the main menu when you first start up your ps2. i clicked the browse button and it said trouble reading disc. ITS A BRAND NEW GAME! LOL. any idea whats up?? write me back in a personal message if you could.. Thanks

    :)

  • Could be the disc drive; try cleaning and lubricating according to the tutorial.

There are three different kinds of PS-2 discs.

    CD-ROM, which is blue-bottomed.

DVD-ROM SL, which is silver-bottomed and has one layer.

DVD-ROM RSDL, which is silver or gold bottomed and has two layers, with the second layer in a reverse spiral; the laser refocuses to get to the second layer.

    DVD-ROM SL are most common.

  • Alrighty, ill try it. Thx

  • My ps2 still works fine for the majority, but recently, ive been having trouble with a couple games. At the browser/memory card screen, it shows the game disc, and i click to play it, but it sends me back to the browser. Any idea whats up?

  • @BuiltToSpill10

Could be a dust issue, which can be resolved by cleaning and lubricating according to the tutorial.

  • Can you make a video on how to take off the covers. Even after taking out the screws i'm afraid i'll damage it because of the snaps.

  • I LOOKED for the clips but i did not see anything. you dont happen to have a video of you removing the clips on an hd7 laser lens.and if not do you know a site that has one.sorry for bothering you so much dont have much money so have to do it myself instead of getting it fixed from sony to exspensive.

  • Unfortunately no.

If possible, you could go ahead and send the pickup to me and I can take care of it for you; all you'd pay would be the shipping charges.

I'd done repair of an HD7 pickup before, but I've never made a video of it. The reason for my offer is so I can go ahead and make a video of it.

  • my ps2 laser lens is an hd7.you said to remove the snaps were are the snaps on an hd7 lens.and if i need to replace the lens how do i remove it.

  • You should look for clips on the sides of the black plastic shroud protecting the voice coil assembly for the objective lens.

Carefully undo the snaps and take the shroud off.

  • hey watcher i have a problem i have the same kind of ps2 serviced in this video i got it a few years ago but never dusted it i recently got a gameshark for the ps2 but every time i try and use it it alwats says disc read error and the disc is spotless will dusting the ps2 really help improve this problem the gameshark disc has the blue stuff on the back of it PLZ HELP!!!

  • If it's been used frequently but never cleaned and lubricated, then it's probably due for that.

If dust has dried up the lubrication in the drive and has settled on the optics, it will cause problems with DREs.

  • CAN I USE WINDOW CLEANER?

    that BLUE liquid.

  • For cleaning the optics, that should work.

Even using just water can work.

Just remember to gently polish the optics dry to remove any streaks that could be left behind.

  • I have currently two fat ps2 consoles. The one im using is SCHP-50004 and the other is SCHP-39004. I know that the later model have improved hardware and another laser called HD7, but is this laser better than the previous ones? I´ve read about that the newer ones would be better but im interested in what you have to say.

  • Depends.

Basically, almost all pickups I've encountered in the fat PS-2s seem to be, for the most part, very robust, even the older versions.

The only problem that usually occurs would be dust exposure of the internal optics.

However, this is not to say that pickups will not wear out.

In addition, internal design changes of the PS-2 hardware can also have an effect on pickup life, such as how much heat the chipset emits and, therefore, could consequently be exposed to the pickup.

  • Thanks for the fast reply! Well my older Ps2 only displays "No data" when i put the discs in it, i´ve cleaned the lens several times and it still reads "No data". Is this because of wrong Ohms at the potentiometers or damaged cable ribbon between the motherboard and lens block? i dont think it is the grease that´s the problem, even though i will take that in consideration.

  • There's another lens that needs cleaning and that's the fixed lens underneath the objective lens.

This video shows how to access and clean the fixed lens.

  • In addition, the pickup uses a kicker mechanism to move the pickup back and forth on the traverse.

If the mechanism and sleds have lubrication that has dried up, it can impede the kicker mechanism. This can cause disc read errors, particularly blue-bottom PS-2 games as these are CD-ROM. CD-ROM games may require the drive to work harder and faster to keep the data bitrate fast whereas the drive doesn't have to work as hard with silver-bottom DVD-ROM games.

  • can somebody help me with my ps2 problem??i searched the internet but none of it has a problem like mine..so,the problem is..when i just bought a new game for my ps2..i put the disc in the disk tray..reset the ps2..the playstation 2 text appears and thn..NOTHING!!it just shows a black screen.i waited for a long time but nothing happens..my other games work as per normal except my 2 new games...CAN SOMEBODY PLEASE HELP ME!!!!!!! NEED REPLY ASAP!! THANKS!!

  • What kind of discs are your two new games? (CD-ROM or DVD-ROM)

What are the titles of the games? (May make it easier to figure out what kind of discs they are)

What kinds of discs are your old games?

  • both are dvd-roms

the titles are monster hunter and fight night round 3

my old games are dvd-roms and can still be played

  • What model is your PS-2?

  • scph 30001 R

  • It could still be dirty optics and sticky mechanicals.

The two new discs may be trying to work the drive in a way that causes problems because of the dust issues.

  • MY PS2 JUST ALWAYS FEEZES. we bought a new game thinking it was the cd but it still does it. any thoughts? It sometimes says "loading" in the middle of a game like its trying to read it or something

  • What game is it?

  • god of war 2

  • How old is the PS-2 and how frequently was it used up to this point?

In addition, "God of War 2" is a DVD-9, or an RSDL (reverse spiral dual layer) DVD-ROM. These kind of discs can be more difficult for the drive to read, especially if the drive is in need of service.

  • the ps2 is pretty old, maybe 6 yrs or so. Its used occasioanaly. I took it aprt yesterday and cleaned the lens, it seems to be working a little better. It still got froze but replayed it and its fine. some "loading" still shows but only on the same spots. I wonder if the disk is messed up again.

  • Were both lenses cleaned or just the objective lens?

And, were any of the mechanical components cleaned and lubricated?

  • no just the main lens that you see, I couldnt figure out how to get to the other one. I almost ended up breaking the cd drive so i got scared & put everything back together without doing anything else. LOL

  • Well, if it's still managing to start up and read the game, then you may not need to clean the fixed lens.

I'd try cleaning and lubricating the mechanism as outlined in the tutorial.

  • Just wanted to say thanks for this video. I had tried lens cleaning before, but to no avail. Then I watched your video about greasing the rods ,which I did not even consider, and they were dry as a bone and i believe that was the true problem. Thanks again my ps2 works great!!!!

  • So if the Warranty slip is still their,i can just send it to the company?

  • It depends.

If the warranty seal is still intact, you should attempt to obtain warranty service if the console is new enough.

However, you can only get warranty service if your console is still covered under the factory warranty. If you have an older front load PS-2, it's old enough to where this warranty has expired, so sending it off to Sony to get it serviced is going to cost you in any parts and labor needed to restore your PS-2 back to operational order.

  • I bought a brand new sealed Gran Turismo 4 and I kept getting the dreaded disc error message. I cleaned the objective lens with no change, when I found out about the fixed lens I cleaned it and it came on instantly - FANTASTIC!!! I've seen a lot of tutorials on cleaning PS2s but they never mention the lower fixed lense. Thanks very much for this I gave a deserved five stars!

  • its old and dusty i had that for 5 years

  • I'd probably say give the cleaning and lubrication a shot, then.

  • i kinda have the same thing exept every time i put in a game it loads then in a few seconds it says disk read error and i have this crash bandicoot game that works it only gets ps1 and those blue ray disk

  • The PS1 game and blue-bottom PS2 discs are CD-ROM. If those are working but the silver-bottom PS2 discs (DVD-ROM) aren't, then it could be an indication that the DVD side of the laser pickup could be bad.

What model PS2 do you have? Plus, how often has it been used? In addition, was the console ever dropped?

  • Dude I don't know what song you had on originally, but 2nd movement of piano concerto #20 was probably the best choice anyhow.

    Bravo.

  • Thanks.

I also happen to fancy classical music myself so by itself it's not too big a loss.

Some of the other alternative selections available on YouTube were mainly loud and intrusive, which was another reason.

FYI: the clip originally featured music by Depeche Mode. "Dreaming of Me" and "Leave in Silence."

  • Can anyone help? my PS2 wont read the games. I cleaned the lense and all that junk. and tightend everything back. and it still wont read em. It spins and all that. I still want my PS2 to work. My PSX still works. and the PS3, well yeah duh it works

  • Please elaborate on tightening everything back?

And how old is this console?

  • I meant the screws. On the back of the PS2

And its less than a year old. Its the slim version.. Idk what to do. I DON'T WANT IT TO DIE!!

  • I'm sorry, but I'm not experienced with the slim consoles.

If it's less than a year old and you've not tried to take it apart and did not break the warranty seal, I'd call Sony customer service and attempt to remedy the problem under warranty.

  • I see, at least in the United States, that warranty coverage is limited to 90 days.

Are the discs themselves okay? Sorry to ask, but just curious.

  • Good video :) .. I have done this procedure in the past and still could not get mine to read any disc of any kind/type.Laser still emits light, moves etc..Disc appears like it should be reading but then its as if the laser isn't sending the data to the ps2 and it starts bobbing up and down and i get a DRE. How can i find out if its my laser chip thats burnt or any other cause?.

  • Was cleaning of the fixed lens attempted (the one that's underneath the objective lens; the objective lens is the one that bops up and down)?

  • Yes i cleaned the mirror and the fixed lens, many times and no improvement.I am almost certain that its the BA/LA chip whichever one has to do with the laser, i just can't confirm it because i do not have a multimeter right now or any other sort of test equipment so do you know if there is a way to tell if it is the laser IC?

  • The laser(s) could be marginal, although it's also possible that the photosensor array could be at fault.

Either problem would require replacement of the entire optical pickup assembly, though. This is particularly true if your PS 2 was used frequently and/or used often in dusty or smoky environments.

  • Yes but mine is actually a 50010/n and a version 9 and i have heard that the laser ic chip in those models are routed to 12v which is too high and the chips burn out... I have tried a fully working drive as well in mine of the same type and still the same thing happens... I think i am convinced now that it is the laser ic and my only option now is to use the Dev1 and Dev2 modes on the modchip that i just installed myself after taking the old modchip out..

  • Hmm. Didn't know that, but it is possible that if a design problem has allowed too much power to the laser emitter, that it would lead to premature failure.

The best solution in this case is to replace the PS 2 with an older model if you still wish to use a front loading PS 2.

Either that, or find a way to regulate the B+ to the laser to a lower voltage (which, IMO, isn't really worth it).

  • Ill just get Dev1 installed onto my memory card and boot it from my modchip... I can live with a laserless PS2, its just a pain when i need access to a working CD/DVD drive in order to put the files onto my memory card..

  • I'm having a problem with my scph-50001 cd drive not spinning at all. I took my system apart originally to lubricate the laser's guide path which works fine now. However, something went wrong and now the cd drive won't spin any discs. I checked to make sure the cables were plugged in correctly but still no go. What can I do?

  • What does the optical pickup do?

When it initially tries to read the disc, does the light briefly flash a bright red?

  • Yeah, it flashes a bright red, then disappears.

  • Okay, that may be a good sign: the DVD laser is getting power. If there is a dim red dot when the lens bops up and down, then that means the CD laser may also be working.

Was the optical pickup ever moved back and forth when the traverse was in the open (down) position?

  • I did see the lens bop up and down as well as the laser unit itself. It aligns itself correctly for each boot, but there's no cd drive movement. We did notice that every so often the cd drive would begin responding and spin a little bit, then it stops again and stays inactive.

  • Can the disc freely spin or does it feel like it's rubbing against something?

Does the drive make any noises?

  • The disc can spin freely if we spin it manually, but it won't do it on its own. It doesn't appear to be rubbing against anything. We hear a very soft nondescript sound when we boot the system, but we're not sure if it's the drive or not however.

  • Can it read DVD discs?

What else was done besides lubrication?

Did you attempt tweaking the white gears by any chance?

  • It can't read anything because the disc drive itself will not run. We didn't tweak the white gears per se, we just rotated them a little bit with our fingers. I wasn't sure if it was a good idea to do so but it didn't seem to do any harm to the machine.

  • Set the white gears back to where they originally were.

Set them to where the one hole drilled on each gear is visible when viewing straight down through a cutout on both metal leafs.

  • Okay, we'll give it a try tomorrow afternoon and see what the results are. Can't do it at the moment but I look forward to it!

  • this worked for me but i can only run cd-rom games (like ps1 games or the ps2 games with the blue back) not dvd-rom games.

i heard i can fix this by adjusting the laser level, do you know how to do this? and if so can you tell me how?

  • I would not advise adjusting the laser power level.

Without the right tools (laser power meter, and etc.) and references (service manual/data sheet), there's no way you can get it adjusted correctly.

Did you do everything, including the lube? Was the skew (tilt adjust) also ever tweaked?

  • yes i tried everything but i think i did something wrong and now it doesn't read anything, i think i probably broke the the laser when i tried to remove it, thanks for your help but i'm just going to sell it to gamestop

  • If you ever tweaked the skew (those white gears), you have to reset them back the way they were. If they are out of adjustment, they can cause some of the reading problems.

Does your PS-2 use two white gears or one?

  • it uses two white gears, it's a scph-50001 like the one in this video

  • Did you attempt any adjustments of those gears?

  • yeah i adjusted them a bit

  • You should set them back the way they were.

Adjust until the holes of the gears are completely and directly visible through the cutouts on the metal leaf springs when staring straight into them.

The gear holes should be directly on-center with the spring's notches.

  • alright i'll try that

  • Please report on how it goes.

  • How do i get the snaps off the Drive cover. i have taken the screws out but it wont open, any help?

  • With some of the newer front loading models, two screws are used towards the front on top while snaps are used to secure the cover from the rear.

    Watch 2:42 onwards.

  • i have done what is on this video but now it wont read discs because it seems like the laser rises too high now any help would be appreciated thank you

  • What part rises too high?

If you mean the black plastic shroud that protects the pickup's voicecoil components, make sure that shroud is snapped back on all the way.

  • well it was the pickup lase that pops out of plastic but now i have another problem the pat of the laser that is connected to the screw on right that piece poped off and i cant get it too stick any help with any of those

  • Can you show a picture of the problem?

  • No but the problem is the laser jumps up and down and hits game

  • What part of the pickup is hitting the game?

  • the laser its self it bobs up and down and hits game i think it has something to do with that piece that goes on that gold screw

  • I have figured out what is wrong one rail has no grase so its being forced down the rail by the laser gear arm that connects to worm motor and it is bending the laser gear arm so i bent out the laser gear arm greased it and is working great thanks

  • Even if the rail had no grease, it shouldn't allow the pickup to move up and make contact with the disc.

Is the rail properly secured with the screw?

And, I'm glad that you did get it working again. These mechanisms do require lubrication to function.

  • well i though i had it working it started grinding again but this time i accidentally broke the laser ribbon the laser and the laser arm gear so I'm just gonna get a new one because it would cost 68 with shipping and you can get a used one from Eb games for cheaper and next time something goes wrong I'm not gonna open it lol

  • Sorry to hear that. You do need to be very careful when working on these things; it is easy to break something.

Fortunately, a used PS 2 from EBGames will have a warranty.
