I had the misfortune of having to raise Sherborne Abbey Tenor virtually single handed, someone eventually came along to help, and it went up right as well, YAY!!! lol
@ProfMoose That's interesting to hear! (as it happens I have rung the tenor behind at Exeter) But I have wondered for a long time which the heaviest bell to be raised single handedly would have been, i figured that the tenor at Exeter would be to heavy for anybody to rais on there own, so I suppose it would be the 11 at Liverpool then?
@anonmonen I think you did jolly well to manage that! Many thanks for your response, interesting conjecture from which one concludes that there are a handful of ringers (obviously your self included) who can ring up a bell up to around 60cwt, but the fact that apparently everybody who has tried Exeter's tenor has so far failed, means that 60 is about the limit...
If you can confirm Liverpool 11th has been done then I doubt there are many other possibles. Only really Wells, York and St Pauls. Just noticed anonmonen has claimed Wells and Wittingtons says York has been done - only St Pauls left. Liverpool might be easier than Exeter.
@ProfMoose Thanks Professor :) As you say not many other possibilities left! It was only a rumour I heard that sombody had managed the 11th at Liverpool, and judging by this response it is indeed definitely possible somebody could have!
I've rung the 11th at Liverpool Cathedral up single handed at 55cwt. I was sweating cobs but I did it. Tenor at Liverpool Cathedral is impossible. A few of us have tried!
of course the double strike might be advantageous for some ringers because it would mean they'd have more chance of getting their effing bell in the right place!
I'd be to scared of ringing this bell on my own (not that i'd be able do it any way) When it double strikes i'd think i was bumping the stay and I'd just die of embaresment!
Very good =) I infact rung the tenor at york up single handed and did it in a similar method to this jumping on the rope to get it swinging from a highish box.
You get a feel of self satisfaction lol =).
Now can exeters or liverpools be done single handedly hmmm.
By the way, I apologise for the horrid view of both my stomach and my underwear, and for those wondering what I say at the start its "Bugger getting it up right, I'm just gonna get it up!"
11 and tenor have recently been fitted with wooden shafted clappers, the one in the 11 being most satisfactory, the one in the tenor quite the opposite!
Cos it went up wrong! Basically the clapper was not swinging to get it striking, yet the bell was on the way up. Ended up with the clapper on the trailing edge of the bell rather than the leading edge, hence the rolling double dong at every stroke.
I'll stop you there... the bell did start by going up wrong, but it was "flipped" on the way up, hence the loud dong half way up, by the time the bell met the balance it was up right. The double dong was caused by the less than satisfactory Wooden Clapper (My Opinion!)
I like to see u try that at Southwark Cathedral

when you got to ringing it normally it was striking twice?? :P

You seemed to ring it up quite quickly, at my tower there are people that take 10 minutes to ring up the treble.

Nice. Put some elbow grease into it!!!
I'd like to see someone try to ring up the Liverpool tenor single-handedly. Something tells me they wouldn't get very far.
bagpiper2005 2 years ago 6
@bagpiper2005 I wouldn't put money on your presumption. The eleventh goes up a piece of piss, single-handedly.

Before I was stopped ringing due to Seizures from brain tumour, I rang up 27 Cwt Bell In peterboro single Handed but went up wrong.
Now I had the tumour removed nearly 2 years ago I am back to ringing.

Well done on raising that 27cwt!
I'd never get that going!
1BODGER95 3 years ago
when you stood the bell was it yp wrong?
1BODGER95 3 years ago
yes it was.
BeFrSc 3 years ago
Say the bell it stood at handstroke and it is leaning to the left, does that mean that the clapper is on the right side or the left?
1BODGER95 3 years ago
the clapper would be on the opposite side of the bell that you would usually ring
pal05pmajor3 3 years ago
Have a crack at exeter cathedral tenor that would be a challenge lol
pal05pmajor3 3 years ago
I have raised Exeter Cathedral tenor with two people only, and that is hard enough.
BeFrSc 3 years ago
I pulled this stunt at Buckfast many years ago. It went up right. I'm in no rush to repeat the performance...
A few have tried Exeter - all failed.

is it possible to ring up while stood on the box? and why was the sally bobbing even before the bell was chiming at the upstroke?
1BODGER95 3 years ago
Cos it went up wrong! Basically the clapper was not swinging to get it striking, yet the bell was on the way up. Ended up with the clapper on the trailing edge of the bell rather than the leading edge, hence the rolling double dong at every stroke.

anonmonen 3 years ago
I have read much of these wooden clappers but never thought they'd have that effect.
Robster981 3 years ago
i think it depends on how they are made, we made one for the Tenor at St Finbarres, Cork. this works splendidly, this one doesn't!
anonmonen 3 years ago
When it was flipped, when it made that loud strike, did you correct it or did it just correct itself?
1BODGER95 3 years ago
My mate upstairs grabbed the clapper mid flight and le the bell catch up with it (This should ony be attempted by trained personnel!!!!)
