Best U2 song off one of the best albums of all time. I recall listening to this at Joshua National Park. An amazing place to be sure. My second fave national park right behind Land Bridges, Utah. They're both worth the visit!
A single Joshua catches the sunrise in a cold and quite place. Only magical desert senses know. "Give us this wondrous knew morning always" the Joshua proclaims
I remember that when you leave the disc in 1987 one of my classmate bought the album immediately. ... and then sent the radio that summer is always some of Cazon questa'album and even jubox ..
i live and grew up in the U.S. when this album came out in 1987 and i don't remember this song on the album but remember seeing it on MTV... did it only come out in New Zealand/Australia?
@TakeMeBackTo1986 This song, Is about a Hill In Auckland New Zealand that Bono sat on top of :)
And apropiatly named one tree hill. I've been up there, And there was a single, Proud oak. And to the left, Is a memorial to the Maori that died in the land wars (and for the Europeans). From the top, you can see the Manukau harbour, Hurakai gulf, all of Auckland pree much.
Words are inadequate to describe this, I'll try. This song creates an atmosphere of wholeness making me feel very good about myself and life. This is one of my all-time best songs to cycle to.
I had a friend lend me a bootleg cd of bono and the edge trying out new stuff . bono is just mummling and humming throughout the cd trying to find vocals to go with the the edges guitar. Its freaking amazing beautiful stuff.
Thanks so much for uploading this. We are working on a documentary on Victor Jara, the martyred Chilean socialist singer-songwriter this song is about. Info and trailer w/ part of Bono's interview at:
resurrectionofvictorjara (dot) com
Bono later (which will be in film) continues on how important Victor was...and continues to be.
My brother died and this was the song on the radio going to the the plot..I still miss you and love you ADAM....I stopped riding motorcycles after u died under the car..... Boy I miss both
Was up there today with hubby's uncle who has cancer. He was rapt to see his two little nieces aged 11 & 12 but they kept asking where is the tree? We told them that the tree was chopped down, but the tree's spirit lives on through this very song. Thank you U2 :)
The song was dedicated to a New Zealand Moari who befriended U2 when they where still playing pubs in Ireland and became a close friend of the group. All he ever wanted was his Harley shipped where ever they played all over the world. He was struck down and killed in the US while they where recording the Joshua Tree Album, all money from the song has been donated to his family. The band also flew home to New Zealand with his body...PEACE BRO.
There is a place called One Tree Hill, New Zealand. That inspired this song. That song inspired the hit television series of the same name. Ironic what one little place can do. :)

Really no one gives a shit your loved one's died there not the first or last people to die so, quit postin shit saying this song is dedicated to your loved ones
In high school (mid 90s), I used to play the Joshua Tree album in a loop for months at a time. I still get chills everytime I listen to this song, and it brings me right back to lying on my bed, staring at the ceiling, with feelings of turmoil and confusion yet youthful (and naive) optimism and a hope for a brighter future for me and the world.
It seems so trite to say that a band has shaped your life, afterall, you don't know them in person. But U2 really did. I will love them forever!
This Album is frozen in time for me. Maybe the 'most' perfect capture of era, lyrics, & rythm. U2 at their finest - despite the years this song takes me back in a split second (It's like riding my motorcycle across un-touched 'Imperial" Sand Dunes after a rainstorm...Perfect)
@6prereq i am glad you are doing well, it is always so hurtfull to loose somebody you love so much, my oldest son just lost one off his mates a copple off weeks ago, he was only 23. that is so sad.

Losing the Miners recently probably doesn't seem like a big deal with all the tragedy around the world, But to NZer's all around the country we felt that loss, U2 played this at their concert and also paid tribute to each lost miner and all I can say is it was an amazing experience and only U2 could have pulled it off with such grace and sincerity
I saw u2 for the first time in Liverpool, march 83 on the war tour, changed my life forever and for the better, god bless boys. i caught the bunnymen live not that much later and they were equally mind blowing, the bunnymen were from my home town and I always thought there was nothing between them,I thought they were both going to be huge,I would love to hear Bono sing 'the killing moon'...imagine that!

This Song was written, for one of their Mates,he played with U2 many many Years ago,he got killed in a Motorbike Crash. Bono dedicated this Song to him, because he was a New Zealander, and One Tree Hill is in Auckland, New Zealand !!!
@pumanz New Zealand's Special Branch are believed to have twigged who the culprits are, they were apparently barking up the wrong tree for a long time.
Víctor Lidio Jara Martínez; I believe that's who he means when he says "Jara sang his song a weapon" he established the Nueva Canción Chilena (New Chilean Song) movement which led to a revolution in the popular music of his country under the Salvador Allende government. Shortly after the Chilean coup of 11 September 1973, he was arrested, tortured and ultimately shot to death by machine gun fire. His body was later thrown out into the street of a shanty town in Santiago.[2] from wikipedia

Amazing song....the part where Bono sings ' raining in my heart ' is one of the all time creschendo's in the history of rock n roll.

I'll never understand why this song was never a single on the radio. It's the best song on an album full of great songs.

The Joshua Tree didn't lack for hit songs, and, ironically, the best song on the album (this one) was never a radio hit .
Possibly, the strongest lyrical song of U2. Or at least in contention.
