This is probably my favourite track on that album. It is such a painful yet powerful story. I get goosebumps every time when he sings "Fetch me the Spirit, the Son and the Father, tell them their pillar of faith has ascended... Give me my wings." I love the video too. The choice of images is relevant and, I think, respectful to the lyrics
Holy crap I love this! Is there anyway I could get you to email this to me?????... I want to take it with me to a burn event and play it there. PLEASE ?!?!
@TheJosephca I'm assuming you mean connection when you say "cauntion." The subtitle of the song is Wings for Marie and his mother's name was Marie. "10,000 days in the fire" is a direct reference to 27 years of suffering. This is an incredible story of someone who challenged religion through song for years and being confronted with the power of his mother's faith in the face of continual struggle and death. And then wrote a song about this tension. Or at least that's my interpretation.
Anyway, ask the Lord for mercy, even if you feel you're a fuck up and will continue to be. I am and I do. It doesn't matter if you think he's fair or the teachings make sense to you. He's God and, though invisible to us, unless you believe Christ was one of the Trinity, no one else's deity or favorite celebrity like Penn and Teller or Amazing Randy (who made Alice Cooper's tricks' props) has made statues cry&Lourdes's cures that cannot be explained away by scientists or huckster exposers.
@fool1shmortal I would probably question my faith in that situation if in his shoes, but I've had it seriously tested in my own situation. Our life is not to be lived for this world and the suffering of the devout for God (allowing it to happen, probably to offer it up for His glory) will gain them a higher reward in the afterlife.
@fool1shmortal Even if you can't believe, just know that is what Christians want and what the true religion teaches, as Christ taught--that we live outside of time, after physical death, which is practically forever for us, in pure bliss.
@NewWorldCorp Hmm... Close! (In my mind...) I was thinking about someone/anyone (maybe Maynard's Mother) finally meeting their maker after suffering years and years of pain.
@NewWorldCorp it's about maynard's mother. she was paralyzed and survived 10,000 days until she finally passed away. judith (APC) was about her too, as her name's Judith Marie (listen to the lyrics in this song). listen to these songs and what they're saying and you can probably deduce his contempt for 'religion' in general. anyhow, 10,000 is a very moving and POWERFUL testament to his mother's faith, and he finally letting her go. sends chills up my spine every time i hear it.
@jozeph69 We're all hypocrites. That's our nature. It's hypocrisy to call others hypocrites as if you're not one. We are all inconsistent at some point. It seemed his mother was religious. Many are called; few are chosen. Maybe she was the latter.
Anycase, We cannot ascend by our own means, as he says his mother did, but we must participate in the grace. We must want it, but we must recognize the source that does it. It's not found in that occultic art and philosophy. We cannot remain creatures of the world. Even real Buddhists believe binding feelings can hold us from salvation. Real Christianity teaches the way to participate. From God, it's foolproof--free of our fancies.
@KoRnSlipFold I'm probably gonna get ripped for saying this because most people that visit this page probably think they're shit, but I've always been partial to a bootleg Blind Melon song called "Mother". The problem with Blind Melon is everyone writes them off because of that shitty ass "No Rain" song; by far their worst song. If you like solid vocals and acoustic music do a youtube search for Blind Melon's Mother. It's no 10000 Days but I think it's a great track...and it's about moms.
@fool1shmortal Agreed. In all truth I'm a Blind Melon fan so I give them a free pass on the song "No Rain". If you listen to their debut album, No Rain actually fits in well within the framework of the album. However lots of people have utter disdain for No Rain because every single bar would play it along with songs like "Mr. Jones and Me" and drive real music fans batshit. Wasn't a bad song all in all. Just totally overplayed (if you were in your teens/twenties during the 90's).
@fool1shmortal Bottom line, I feel a little stupid for even bringing up Blind Melon on a message board for a Tool video...especially one as brilliant as this. Love the bit where Chancellor is shredding that bass. So underrated.
@spkilledme Hey, thank you as well. Glad you liked it. And yes, the music is the studio version synced (as close as I could get it) to the live footage.
I love how Tool can make a song that's over 11 minutes long yet it still builds and builds and gets more powerful as it progresses until the crescendo...and then almost what I would consider a 2-minute epliogue at the end. Brilliant.
@kovalevisgod Oh, I know! That's one of the main reasons why I dig their tunes so much. That and the timeless yet totally syncopated rhythms that paint perfectly with the melody and Maynard's chilling vocals. Brilliant indeed.
@drummah68 This is the coolest song dedicated to a mom that I've ever heard. You can tell this song was really important to Maynard in the album's production. Seems like they may have spent a little extra time on this track.
@PenguinCookies94 Okay, you don't like Tool, fine but keep the negativity off my page, please. If you have anything intelligent to say, say it. Otherwise, fuck off and go listen to "Shiny, Happy People".
@drummah68 Yes sir. I'm a drummer. Seems like numbers and their relation to our lives is a big theme for Tool. Polyrhythms might be a testament to that. Danny Carey is playing his polyrhythmic beat meanwhile Adam's riff is in 4/4? and Justin plays a completely unique time sig. 4 way poly
@stfuNsmokethis I'm not sure where you get the impression that they care about numbers. 10,000 days is the exact number of days Judith Marie spent afflicted with her illness before she died. That's all it stands for. Forty six and 2 is a genetics reference.
Greetings from Canada, and thank you for the video(720p!). Intriguing choice of image blending. My 10,000 day on earth, if I have done my math correctly, will fall on my fathers birthday this May(the 1st). Strange and amazing time to be alive, no?
@lkjh4433 Greetings back, ay? :) Thanks for the nice comment. It IS a strange time, BUT now is the time to live life like your last (10,000th) day on earth. And if it lands on your Dad's B-day, then you have all the more reason to live ANOTHER 10,000 days. Got it?
@drummah68 Yes of course. Saturn ascends the one the ten.
I was more musing/mumbling how interestingly compelling the strangeness of our contemporary lives can seem at times. Thanks again, and hopefully you can make it out to a show in the near future if you haven't already.
In the video thumbnail it looks as though there's a statue of a horse in an apocalyptic setting. I soon saw this wasn't the case but it's still an excellent video nonetheless, one of the best. Awesome work.
