  • smoking pot to this song, ahh good old times

  • i wonder what they were saying?

  • Oh my god I rember singing this, about 20 years ago, when I was 5/6 years old at school.

    The good ol days.

  • Why the fu*k does everybody think this is about pot!? They should be ashamed!! This is a sad truthful, should be respected song!! I cry whenever I her this!!!! I hate the idiots in society.....

  • Forces favourites radio , sunday dinner time..... memories, great parents great times..

  • I'ma puff my magic dragon right now!

  • I used to hear this song when I was 5, and cried. Now, many years later, I still cry.

    "I used to cry,

    and my teacher asked why

    And I will simply say

'For me to be happy there is no way.

Now that Puff has lost his long life friend,

None of my problems I can emend''

    I

  • puff is a kite....

  • I sure wouldn't mind going back to 1968,even if i'd have to be a little boy again for the rest of my life, cause like it says in the bob seger song from 1979 against the wind, sure wish that i didn't know now, what i didn't know then,AND JUDITH DURHAM would be the beautiful young girl in her early 20s still sing I'll never find another you..

  • @54SV it's a later recording of theirs. I'd guess the 70s or 80s. It's definitely them, I've heard it before.

  • I have always thought that Little Jacky Paper should have looked after his Dragon better than he did...I got kicked out of my Kindergarten class for saying so...so there Miss Grace of Smithfield Primary N.S.W 1968 I`m still a mouthy so and so!!

  • Yeah, and neither is HR Puffin Stuff--the place you go when things get rough.Lol

  • Are you absolutely sure this is The Seekers? Doesn't sound like Judith. Is it a very new recording? Anyway it is no match to the original by Peter, Paul & MARY

  • @54SV That's definitely Keith singing the "Together they would travel" verse.

  • @54SV you're right - no match at all. this is far superior! Of course it's the Seekers -live in concert. Judith sounds fabulous and note perfect as ever.

  • my teacher put this song in a math thingyy to make it more fun...love you (as a teacher) mr. fassl(:

  • poof the magic drag queen....sounds more suitable for this generation, don't you think? fabulous!

  • puff is the kids imaginary friend right? thats what the songs about right?

  • great song free the weed

  • If anyone separates Puff from that little kid they should let him blow fire right on their asses. How could you do that to them. Oh the humanity.

  • @Mannchild11 The reason they were seperated is because Jackie the little boy grew up and on to "other toys".

  • Be mature but dont ever grow up. Hold on to your imagination for it is the only place in existance where there is magic and even an old man can can be a little kid again sailing with a smile on his face through pirate filled waters.

  • i think its sad. i cry everytime i hear this song and i really dont know why.

  • i used to sing this all the time in primary school... and always cried D':

  • What a beautiful time when song were about peace and happiness, people lived together and shared there life with each other.

The world was on its way to turn in to a paradise but some were we took the wrong turn and now we live in a world filed with hate.

  • The kid came back with the soup nazi...

  • Best version ever, after the one I heard in Budapest in Hungarian at an open air concert.

  • still makes me cry

  • a tale about friendship... actually...

  • AH YES..living in a fairy tale world is obviously the best :) love remembering this song..awesome.. puff the magic dragon lived by the sea...

  • Little Jackie Paper will have a massive growth spurt and become known as Hagrid, then research dragon family trees for his future baby Norbie and bundle him off to Romania where great Uncle Puff can look after him so he don't get homesick.

  • @Ilovecats112233

hagrid?? like from harry potter?? haha

  • @thetuffy123456 Harry Potter is so shit

  • @y3ko86 harrry potter is AMAZING...you're shit.

  • @Ilovecats112233 *Giggle* Oh if only! And then Jude and the boys can write a song about that, and no-one will say it has anything to do with drugs. Oh, and @54SV: Yes, that's definitely The Seekers. It's the full song, so I'd say it's probably from their 2000 tour, since the 1993 one only had an abridged version of the song... I think, so please don't quote me. And its definitely Judith.

  • That's one goofy looking dragon.

  • Al Bundy took me here. :D

  • did anyone else notice the weird vocal "Live" by the male vocalist at 0:49?

  • @meatballllll I tried to listen for it and didn't hear anything that stood out

  • @meatballllll

yep, but the Seekers are an Aussie group and the "D" is usually shorter in our accents anyway because we naturally don't emphasis it. "Live" and "Lived" are almost identiticle in aussie accents.

  • I know puff lived by the sea, but you never see Fraw, the other dragon that licked in the autumn mist....

  • @robbieisbatman Good one!

  • The song is not about weed or autism - it is based on a poem by Leonard Lipton, a fellow Cornell University student of Peter Yarrow (Peter Paul and Mary). Lipton still gets half the royalties for the song.

  • The dragon looks like he is on acid...

  • i cry every time

  • @FalloutOldVegas I KNOW MAN, I KNOW!!!!!! :'(

  • where the fuck does it mention weed serious FUCK OFF if you think that we used to sing this in reception which is 5years old if you dont kno

  • i love this song.... let it be ok that itrs about marijuana... its stupid to say it isnt

  • I LOVE WEED 0.0

  • This song is so sad

  • I think It's a good song. I think it's a good song about a dragon and a kid's friendship in a magical kingdom. Whether or not it is about kids with autism, or weed, or asylum kids, has no effect on the quality of the music.

Let a good song be just a good song, for the sake of the music.

  • @canadiantothebakon well said!

  • @canadiantothebakon how is it about those things? I'm genuinely curious :) I had no idea.

  • It's Toy Story 3 all over...

  • @dalegrett actually if that's what you think, it would be Toy Story 3 is THIS all over lol.

  • I constantly sang this song to my babies through their teenage years. Then they didn't have any more time for it. Now nearly 40 years later, I sing it to my grandchildren and they love it and gaze at me in admiration. I once again feel like a million bucks. Thanks for a wonderful children's song sung by a wonderful group - the Seekers.

  • Having two autistic kids myself, I'm glad this beloved song has this story attached to it. I always think of my kids whenever I hear it.

  • My dad told me this song is about smoking marijuana.

  • this song is my favorite it shows that how we grow up we lose our imganation and that is true

  • Thumbs up if bretts beatbox videos comment made you search for puff the magic dragon

  • dofmaster you are so right, an imaginary friend that was out grown, and just goes on to imagine what it would be like if it were true. we all had imaginary friends, mine was hermie, he wasn't a dragon, but a rwal monster lol

  • What's that thing that looks like a bong

  • I wont claim to know if the song is about drugs or children growing up but I wonder if two places mentioned are real to PY. There is a town of by the sea named Hanalei in Kauai, Hawaii. Would be pronounced "lay" not l"lee" but could be the inspiration changed to rhyme with sea. And maybe there is s street somewhere to PY's knowledge called Cherry Lane.

Just as Strawberry Field and Penny Lane were real places the Beatles wrote about.

  • I read once that Peter Yarrow was living in Cornell N.Y. It didn't specifficly say what he was doing there buit said that he was visited by a first year student. This first year student was struggling with the loss of childhood inherent in attending university and wrote the words to the song. Peter Yarrow wrote the music.

  • This wasn't even a Seekers song - it belonged to Peter, Paul and Mary ... but when the Seekers reunited for their Silve Jubliee tour, they recorded this at one of their concerts, saying they were often requested for it, just as the other group was often requested for Morningtown Ride which IS a Seekers song.

  • i really felt sorry for mr. dragon, it makes me wanna cry just to know someone was left behind and misses someone. :''(

  • Find out how the original lyrics author says about the song: lennylipton-dot-wordpress-dot-com

  • For over 40 years I have heard how this song is about toking on a joint. For the love of GOD.....give it a rest peeps. This is a childhood song. ENOUGH...already !

  • @hotforxx TRUE ITS TOO BAD THEY TAKE SUCH A NICE LITTLE TUNE AND RUIN IT WITH LOUSY LYRICS

  • my god this is fantastic such great memories of childhood

  • Lovely, although my fave version will always be that sung by Keith Field on A Handful of Songs, when I was little.

I can see why people think it's about drugs; Jacky's company seems to be like a drug, to Puff. Maybe people feel they can conquer pirates, do anything, when they're high? Then later suffer from withdrawal symptoms, feeling they can't be brave without the drug. When Puff "no longer plays along the cherry lane", could it mean he no longer sees psychedelic colours?

  • Then there's me, the young and bouncy, a teen catwoman from ears to ankles to teacups to key ring - taller than Dee, but so thin that I too seem a midget to Sue. She swept both of us into a hug when we were crying ("There, there sweetheart") and I reckon we looked like hobbits. Both occasions reminded me of Puff and little Jackie Paper. Maybe it’s the absence of circuses that makes Saturdays particularly busy for us loonies.

  • This song comes to my mind on Saturdays because of my own group of friends. We have big friendly Sue, one of the church ladies, our slow, placid giant who amuses us with her dawdling and daydreaming, and there's pretty, shrill little Dee, the quirky and chaotic manager with her many catastrophes, multiple occupations and her flappy, over-emotional ways.

  • I don't care if the song is about drugs. I like it because of the nice melody!

  • wow...havnt seen that in forver ...still juz az awesome >.<

  • This reminds me of Sophie and the B.F.G ...

  • this clip is quite sad...

  • so MANY memories. just so many

  • My childhood relived XD

I remember watching this cartoon in school. hehe

  • After listening to that song for about 40 years I think its just a good song.

Kinda of reminds me of the relationship I have with my dumb ole hound dog

  • Es la high skill!

  • Beyond the mention of the word "puff" in the title, is there anything in this song which justifies the daft suggestions this song is about drugs? I mean, what is the supposed allegory here? Why not just about kids having vivid imaginations which fade as they get older.

  • @ThaddeusTheBaddeus I guess the odd last name "paper" makes people think that it's an allegory to marijuana use. I can't think though how strings or sealing wax would fit into that.

  • this is a good song

  • Jeesh, did they ever sing anything original?

If it weren't for Joan, Judy and PP&M they would sung have only had Georgy Girl and those cheesy TV show songs.

  • me 57 vintage i can find solace and peace in this magical song today QLD Australia we all can use a little magic.

  • lil brother luvz puff

  • Pure and moving. Always wet eyes, thanks to sluggymansluggy2!

  • The hero's of Nam know all to well who Puff is and if you think its for drugging you have another thing coming!!!!!!!

  • Judith Durham adds a special touch to this special song.

  • stephen fry sed on qi that it wasnt about drugs. so there :)

  • Ive watched this like a million times (obviously exaggerating) and it still Always makes me cry

  • lol. "Puff the magic dragon"... wtf they teaching kids. no wonder y some many people grew up smokin weed

  • @calico1248 fuck off

  • I remember this song well.

It is a classic that the Seekers made even better.

    Thank you.

    George Vreeland Hill

  • I read that there was a freshman at Cornell who wrote it because he was experiencing the sense of lost childhood. At that time Yarrow was also in Cornell and the freshman gave Peter the lyrics. Peter wroth the music. He claims that that was way bdfore drugs became a big thing on college campuses.

  • all my life, ever since I first heard it when I was 3, this song has made me cry, but I still love it.

  • its not about weed or the loss of a childs innocence.... watch the whole episode.....its low key about kids with Autism, i had a whole lesson on this in my physcology course in college last semester. jackie draper in real life could not inerect in real life so said the doctors. he was a "special" boy, so puff the magic dragon had to make a paper version of him called jackie paper to come interact wih him in his own personal world in his head. Its trying to show how life is hard for austistics

  • @dogmaster1313 Wow, thats really interesting actually. I have 2 autistic kids

  • @dogmaster1313 It may well fit autistic children but according to the writer it was indeed about the end of childhood.

  • @dogmaster1313 I think your Psychology teacher needs a Psychiatrist. The song and story are about an Imaginary friend of a little boy. Nothing More

  • @sixtiesforever1966 He's talking about the Puff The Magic Dragon cartoon, which has a different plot than the song.

  • @dogmaster1313 The film story was about an autistic boy, but it came along much later than the song. The song could have been whatever Peter Yarrow had in his mind. I always loved the song and liked the film a lot too. While fiction, it does point out that many of our problems are in our minds.

  • @dogmaster1313 what do you mean, inerect?

  • @Speechless501 I think that was a spelling mistake.

  • @Ilovecats112233 yeah I know. I was kidding.

  • @dogmaster1313 "He (Peter Yarrow) has also said of the song that it 'never had any meaning other than the obvious one' and is about the 'loss of innocence'." Just sayin'...

  • @dogmaster1313 This song way, way predates the cartoon. The interpretation of the song has been debated for decades.

  • @dogmaster1313

It actually is about the loss of childhood innocence as Jackie Paper no longer plays with Puff because she has grown up and forgotten about him, puff returns to his lonely cave forever. Puff was her imaginary friend...

But you are also right, there are multiple themes to the song and Autism is certainly suggested. It's like how Wizard of Oz was dedicated to Dorothy, his deceased baby Neice. Originally the character was supposed to be a young boy.

  • @dogmaster1313

but you can also view the theme of Autism, and she has in fact died at the end after a "lifelong" friendship.... either way it's exceptionally sad, the final verse. Either she has grown up and forgotten puff forever, or she has died...

  • @dogmaster1313 hahahahahahaha, I think youve got autism if you believe that

  • apprently it's about smoking "puff the magic dragon"

  • @goldensilent09 Its not about drugs......

  • @goldensilent09 As it happens, I have spoken to Peter personally about this at a festival, and he not only didn't write it about Weed, but after decades, He's still irked that people ever gave it that connotation.

If you search Youtube, you'll find a video of them performing the song, and him showing his irritation about it some, as he begins the song.

  • lol @ doland

  • 1:02 why does jackie need to keep look out if their not smoking? why would these pirates get so excited about the mention of his name?

  • This song makes me sad :( Even though it ends happily, it just reminds you that in your life you're gonna loose a friend and they wont want you even childhood memories that you can't hold on to... call me sapppy but that's how this song comes across for me

  • The song was written well before any cartoon or book was written on the topic. It's from the mind of Peter Yarrow, and I suppose he is the only one knows if it's about drugs. Personally I doubt it.

  • @jnf91 Yarrow has repeatedly denied references to drugs.

  • @jnf91 personally, that dragon looks pretty fucking baked

  • Love this song, and on Norwegian, i'm always get tears! :')

  • Love this song, and on Norwegian, i'm always get tars! :')

  • This song makes me remember when i was a young boy,my father would always play this on the walkman...To bad nobody has respect for their history no more, talking about a song that is olderthan you saying "its weed." I mean cmon! Grow up!

  • This song is not about weed. It is based on a book/cartoon called Puff the magic dragon. Some stoners later realized it sounds like Puffing . But read the lyrics and youll see that only the name of the dragon (puff the magic dragon) can be associated with mariuhana . The rest will in no way really fit ;)

    PS love the song

  • My daddy used to pull out the guitar and play this for me and my sister. My favorite childhood memories all involve this song :)

  • love this song, so nostalgic! when you were young, this was just a happy song your parents used to sing to you, now it gets sadder and sadder the older you get:(

  • @kbergsland so true

  • This is testing the limits of my memory, but it still brings a tear to my eye.

  • I don't know what this song is 'really' about...but I do know that it just made me cry.

  • This was my favorite childhood memory(didn't have many) But now it's my grand daughter's fav.(her childhood much better

  • Like politics...ppl will associate anything to their cause...only in recent years I have heard this was associated with drug use

    cheers Dave

  • lol but u got to say that th dragon does look stoned on the video

  • you SERIOUSLY have to be on crack, meth, and ecstasy to make this whole idea about the movie

  • the 5 who don't like this video are stupid. who wouldn't like this cute wittle video? it's soooooooooooo cute!!!!!!!!!!

  • WTF o_0

  • Puff the magic dragon, a bird of days long gone, cam to fly in the evening sky in a land called vietnam!

  • Dragon finds boy. Drgon loses boy. Dragon finds bo again. Age old story.

  • Isn't it hilarious so many people thought this was about drugs?

  • @Darksteal2k7: To me, it's more infuriating rather than hilarious. But this song still makes me a bit teary-eyed when I hear it.

  • Sealing wax-- the stuff you melt, dribble on an envelope and then stamp with a design so if anyone opens it, they break the wax seal.

IMO this song is sad ala Biff the Friendly Purple Bear.

  • @nspo When my children were small I used to tell them bedtime stories based on Biff the Purple Bear. We spent many adventures getting lost and finding our way out of the Enchanted Forest. My kids shared those stories with their little friends. Puff and Biff were sad stories of growing up and away from childhood, but there was always the promise of other children coming to play with Biff and Puff. They are tales of rebirth.

  • how is this a kids song? This is the saddest most depressing song I have ever heard.

  • im 15 and listened to this song in 1st grade with my whole class.and we all cried. i remember we were just standing in line crying lol.and on that bus!

  • im puffing the magic dragon right now

  • the dad looks like weird al

  • On puff's gigantic diicckkk

  • I love this song...my twinboys always was singing this song, when they was about 5 years old<3<3<3

  • So who's gonna puff the magic dragon with me?

  • Comment removed

  • @MrSartak1977

    Lighten up (literally) :p

  • ok my friend rewrote this song and made me believe that she wrote it!!!

    lol

now i can bug her... or she can bug me

  • I like this song! It's very nice and sad :3

  • soooooooooooo sad :'(

  • there is more then one reference he brought him strings and ceiling wax and other fancy stuff...its referencing opium. but it can also reference a child losing his imagination and the sadness in leaving behind a childhood and becoming an adult. i think it can mean what u want it to theres multiple meanings

  • puff puff !! lol

  • This still makes me sad :(

  • @TheShelleyMae Me too ... I refuse to even listen to it these days

  • awsome song lol

  • What else would you call your pet dragon? Smoky? Mum in law? Get a life. I have serious doubts about those who introduce that topic, "drugs", into civilised conversation. It tells me more than (for example, you) could ever realise. Before you reply, remember, you brought illegal substances into this arena.

  • my fave song EVA!!!

  • obviously about drugs - sorry guys!

  • sorry, you're wrong.
