That's a good question, but I think the complete answer may be left up to interpretation. However, I would say that that is an excellent inference.

However, James, Heather, Travis & Alex could still leave Silent Hill.

But the alternate endings are still relevant to the plot and just as valid.

Just because only one branch of the story line was continued doesn't mean they're irrelevant.

Alternate endings are called "alternate endings" for a reason. Nobody considers the dog ending or the UFO endings to be relevant to the plot, so the other endings, while cool to see, are not valid or relevant.

No matter how you want to doll it up, James never left Silent Hill. Harry is the only confirmed human to ever leave Silent Hill. You don't even really know if Heather left with Douglas.

I wish the movie was never made. People get so many awful ideas from it. PoS movie.

I'd like to distinguish between 'alternate' & 'bonus' items unlocked through certain bonus items.

What you must understand is that before the sequels implied which endings were the "real" ones, all of them were equally valid.

Even the joke endings might as well be considered a possibility in a game like Silent Hil...

But anyway, all endings are relevant to the thought process behind the story line and its symbolism.

Even then, there was a true ending. Alternate endings are bonus material. If you had asked the dev team which was the "right" ending, they would have been able to give you a concrete answer.

You are correct, however, when you say that the ending are relevant to the thought process. However, don't think for a minute that even in James' bonus endings that he left Silent Hill, or anyone for that matter.

In all of James' endings, he goes insane and thinks the people SH created are real.

As I said, I highly doubt they already planned the entire story line ahead.

They only decided afterwards which story line they will continue.

After all, all endings are possible theoradically, based on the player's actions in the game. However they went with the one the actual character probably would've ended up with.

On the other hand, this can't really be said about the ending in SH1 where Harry was really dead all along.

On another note, are you saying Eddie, Angela & Laura aren't real?

Therefore it's safe to assume those characters were real and were drawn to the town.

James doesn't imagine them like he thought up Maria.

I don't believe Laura was drawn there at all. Eddie and Angela I can imagine, but I think Laura was the town's design like Maria.

But I've never heard anyone view it like this. Most likely due to the fact that most people believe that Laura is a real character in contrast to the guilty people "drawn" to Silent Hill.

Obviously we wouldn't know wether she was real or not.

All characters also represent a part of James's personality anyway so it's questionable if any of them are real.

WOW man that guy went from being cool to a real asshole fast. Anyway for those who didn't catch on, like the movie, the clocks have all stopped and people aren't allowed to "move on" because they're in the foggy realm. (Though the realm can also occur outside of Silent Hill like SH3 and this game Shepard's Glen). In that realm time lies still, no one ages. Its a realm of purgatory. But yeah, the guy in the hat... total asshole. :P
