MY ENGINE ON MY CITREON C5 DONE THE SAME AND EVERYONE THOUGHT IT WAS A DIESEL, I GOT A ENGINE FLUSH THEN PUT IT IN RAN THE ENGINE FOR 15 MIN THEN DRAINED OLD OIL AND THE REPLACED OIL FILER PUT DRAIN PLUG BACK ON THEN FILLED WITH NEW 10/40 SYTHETIC OIL THE ADDED wynns valve/hydraulic tappet cleaner, AT FIRST ON START UP STILL THE SAME ,THEN 20 MILES LATER BLOODY BRILLIANT CANT HERE IT KNOW MORE,SOUNDS LIKE A NEW ENGINE 10/10 TO WYNNS.
still sounds like lifter noise, when replacing lifters leave set in a container of oil over night, this will let all air out completely soak the lifters with oil that way they will pressurize alot easier after the install.
there is a known fault with the oil pumps starving the camshafts of oil due to either none genuine filter or blockage of the strainer pump gauze, common faut on 1.8 engines coded adr etc

these cars need 10W-60 oil check in ur manuals and u will see, it works best at all temperature or if u want ur car to run like it never has before pour in some royal purple the 10W-30 works fine its more expensive but u only change it once ever 8k miles and ur car will freaking run like its meant to trust me its the best oil out there bar none
Hi all.I ve got the same noise in my engine.Currently running on castrol 10w40.I bought a can of " oil treatment" and it helped for a while.Which means thicker staff. You recommend 5w40-is it thicker than 10w40 ? Thanks
@tandaman538 well mine is a 99 so i guess it changed over time, but hey have u tried using lucas oil stabilizer that stuff usually helps with lifters and noise in general, im currently using 10-40 in my car year round and i dont really have engine noise anymore, im still using royal purple with the knn filter, i tried out castrol and mobil 1 but the power and just the overall responsiveness just wasnt there so i went back to royal purple and im quite satisfied
@metallicafn yeah i will probably try something soon but i was told by a few people its the high pressure fuel pump, i did a couple things to diagnose where the sound was coming from and it doesnt sound like its anything major but you really never know, its not really loud but still weird when im not 100% sure what it is. i just changed the oil and used castrol syntec 5w40 and just started driving it so we will see if i notice a change then i might try something
Finally i used something called "engine flush",then i changed oil from castrol magnatec 10w40 to mobil 1 S 10w40 and noise is gone.Engine is more powerfull and there is no noise at all even when cold.
In my experience leave it alone thiscars suffer from this lifter noise at start up specially. Like someone mention thicker the oil to 5w 40 recommended anyway. and it will go away. ASE TECH
I have same problem on my audi, same sound and same smoke on the right side of the motor (when looking video-left side) there comes also water out from engine at a side and sprinkles on turbo. Now I don`t know is the problem in cam tensioner?
I have rebuilt an engine, it was on my 1999 audi a6. The timing belt slipped and bent most of my valves. It took more then three months for me to fix everything. btw hondas are more reliable than pontiacs.
My final fix was to keep driving it, i had swapped the lifters and cam tensioner and the noise progressively got better. I now have over 250k on the engine and it still runs strong.
A side note, I switch from castrol syntec 5w40 to rotella sythentic 5w40 and that seemed to help as well.
Did you break in the lifter to the cam when you first put it in? In that I mean.. after installing new lifters on a cam you have to break them in by holding the engine at a certain rpm AS SOON as the engine first starts.. like my 3.1mpfi you have to start it and instantly go to 2000rpm for a minimum of 10 minutes so the cam lobes properly seat to the new lifters, Otherwise ya wipe the new lifters and cam lobes within weeks-months
If youve ever rebuilt an engine and did it the right way, youd know what kind of "BS" Im talking about... Ill give ya the vtec's are reliable but I gotta side with the gm 3800, extreme reliable and won best engine multiple years
hard to diagnose without being there. take a screwdriver to the ear and try to hunt it down, start at the valve cover and work your way around, try to get a better idea what your up against.
Drop in a Ford flathead V8. Then turbocharge it. If the ticking still persists, you have to leave the galaxy. Or, perform a kind deed.

@freak777power yeah, they're easier to get on a tow truck because their compact and twice as expensive to fix because you have to import their parts.

@metallicafn thats an older one but my 2006 a4 2.0T recommends 5W-40 as the first choice and if you cant get that then use 5w-30 or 0w-30

If you use thicker oil you will "gum up" your turbocharger (if you have one) and your oil pump intake. Do not do it!

yes exactly 5W anything and ur turbo will hate your guts

I have the exact noise on a 2001 Passat with the 1.8T engine. The noise started after replacing all the valves and lifters. What was your final fix?

im sorry i just read your comment dident know the tensioner was replaced it has a bent valve. hope i can help

This all started when the cam tensioner failed I am assuming i may have barely tapped a valve.
compression #'s are good and ticking has gotten a bit better, i've put the original lifters back in and the noise is the same.
audinutt 4 years ago
what type of lifters do they have?

What kind of BS is this? Start it and instantly to 2000rpm? Go get yourself a VTEC. Most reliable engines in the world.

constantly do it or just when its cold??

mine does it cold and after a warmed up easy 20-30min drive.
