  • Serious, after watching other kilns, retorts and ovens to make charcoal (biochar) this one leaves to much smoke. Two or three hours of smoke is not to make your neighbours happy with. I would go with other methods.

  • how to do it without a barrel?

  • @MrCalathea Buy a barrel first.

  • yeppers... nothing like leaving an unattended fire, on a windy afternoon..

  • I make charcoal the same way, but I light the fire AFTER the drum is fully charged and have it burn from the top down. I have no tight fitting lid, so I use a large inverted washtub to close off the burn. This is a very efficient way to make charcoal in small quantities, I think. From a 55 gallon drum of wood I get at least half as much charcoal per burn.

  • the first 30 seconds of that video made me realize fall is coming, very nice.

  • Great videos! Part 1 and 2. I was searching for the most effective and simple way to make charcoal and I believe that you've got it. Thank for sharing.
