Serious, after watching other kilns, retorts and ovens to make charcoal (biochar) this one leaves to much smoke. Two or three hours of smoke is not to make your neighbours happy with. I would go with other methods.

I make charcoal the same way, but I light the fire AFTER the drum is fully charged and have it burn from the top down. I have no tight fitting lid, so I use a large inverted washtub to close off the burn. This is a very efficient way to make charcoal in small quantities, I think. From a 55 gallon drum of wood I get at least half as much charcoal per burn.
Great videos! Part 1 and 2. I was searching for the most effective and simple way to make charcoal and I believe that you've got it. Thank for sharing.
