Also because it's not a very nice tone if you hear it up close ... so he has to pull back a bit to soften it in the mix :)

I agree this is probable one of his best live performances ever--he sounds fantastic, a great voice, a great singer. I think the back up musicians can't or won't play together. They sound really sloppy to me. Or the mix is really bad or something. It seems like the back up singers and Lou C. are the only ones who can actually hear each other.
