  • very nice. good detailed explination.

  • Steve & Vinnie would be so proud

  • ur using moon gel right, that stuffs great

  • thanks that helped a lot!

  • I got a lot of practicing to do :D

  • tnx for the diddles man!

  • Woah...

  • Hi, is that a Bristol accent? and are you possibly in London and fancy a jam?

  • I can't even reproduce 0:15-0:20 xD

  • Good stuff man , i really appreciate the way you broke it down . Really simple .

  • That's not a Gospel lick, it is just a triplet fill. quit bringing religion into drumming. Jesus was born a Jew and the Bible is a plagiarized version of the Torah that pagans turned it into Christianity, Boy are you guys brainwashed.

  • Thank you for the upload! Are you endorsed?

  • old weckl-lick.... sorry and greetings from germany

  • i've always liked to think of this particular sticking as a parididdle diddle with the last stroke replaced with the foot

  • THANKS FOR SHARING MATE!

  • Awesome

  • Thanks man, thats awesome

  • I just realized something about this fill. I learned something very similar to this from a Gary Chafee video a few years back. In addition to the RLRRLF triplet pattern he inserted a RLFRLF. Try using the RLRRLF pattern where your right hand plays the hi-hat, left hand plays snare, and you hit the snare with your right hand on the first note of the pattern..so like RLRRLF SLRRLF RLRRLF SLRRLF, the "S" is when you bring your right hand over to the snare for the accent.

  • @jdjbarnat Just realized another thing, I learned it RLRLLF instead of RLRRLF

  • informative and concise. Thanks for teaching and not showing off..pleas post more!

  • Thanks for this and your other videos. Really breaking down the grooves and fills giving my drumming more variety. I really appreciate it =)

  • Excellent!

  • Wow very good lick!

And i'd be so honored if Mike "The White Lightning" Johnston told me the same :D

  • your licks are great but can you slow them right down just to make it easy to see when view the videos. but GREAT STUFF

  • You sound awesome! Thanks for sharing, man!

  • wicked lick cheers

  • Gracias, excelente ....saludos desde Colombia

  • Now Sam, Richard Dawkins would probalby not approve of you playing "Gospel" licks....lol...jk.

  • He probably doesnt even believe they exist!

  • HAAAA! you did not make this up liah!!

  • amazing fills!! a+!!

  • Do you have anymore videos up? This video was great. I'm a beginner, and I've had alotta problems trying to include the toms when I play. Do you have any advice for me ( or any good exercises that will help me )?

  • is this also known as sextuplet? or am i getting to patterns mixed up?

  • it is a sextuplet but that only refers to how many notes there are. sex = 6. Its also a version of a Paradiddle-diddle so you could call it a Parradiddle-diddle in sextuplets.

  • so isnt para d d same as a six stroke roll? right? doesnt matter where single n dbl strokes are

  • yeah youre right. Hadnt thought about it that way but any permutation or 2 singles and 2 sets of doubles will be a six stroke roll

  • Wonderful video ! Thanks :)

  • great video thanks

  • dude that paradiddle diddle lick is great! Thanks for sharing it :).

  • Great fills man, what was the second 1/2 of the stcking when you combined the two fills together ?

  • Still the same sticking I think. just moving it around the kit

  • that shit is off da hook.

I'm definately gonna get into these linear fills, it's just total tastyness :)

  • yum yum i eat it up haha

  • Rudy bloody brilliant that is ! Gotta practice that ! Keep putting vids up !

  • wow that is killer. I will definitely have to add my feet more to my fills and practice the rudiments

  • greaaaaat job broo wow..

  • moongel <3

  • Moongel kill the true sound of a drum...

  • @iandrummer07

The true sound of a drum is what you want it to be.

  • yes yes the fills are great and super well explained..BUT i just love the beat you do with the toms around 3:50 and the bit at the end.. love it!

  • These fills are awesome.

  • wow, cool! interesting

     fills

  • sorry, bro. Gospel drummers in Black churches have been doing this and other licks since the late 70s.

  • That may be true but I don't think he's making any claim to have originated these fills.

I agree with you that Gospel chops are some of the dopest shit to come along in drumming for a long time.

  • duh cocteautwinsfan! the video is called "Drum Lesson 1: Triplet Gospel Fills"!

kind of implied that that is where the fills are inspired from duznt it? even a little...?

  • Yeah it just came from learning rudiments the trying them on different drums. Certain combination's will sound better than others and will have a 'hook' to them.

  • nice bit at 2:22?

  • berklee drum room!!!

  • actually panic studios in london!

  • out of curiosity what kind of kit is this?

  • This isnt actually my kit...just a practice room one but its a Pearl Masters Studio I think. 20" Kick, 10" Rack Tom and 14" Floor. Thats my snare which is a premier Artist Birch

  • rlrlfLRff <-- that's a fun fill.

but really i like this one it looks fun.

  • nice lesson!

  • Thanks for the video!! You are a great Teacher!!

  • Basically take all of those 60-70's band and do a little research on their influences, i.e. Muddy Waters, Howlin' Wolf, etc. And that'll get you going in the right direction. And you'll probably more likely to go toward Chicago and Texas electric style blues as opposed to the Delta stuff which is very minimalist, but never the less great in it's own right.

  • nice vid good job

  • listen to steve ray vaughn..trust me,that will help a lot learnin the blues

  • Thnx! Great lesson!

  • happy to help. so 70's rock? well just take the bands you listen to and really look at the drummers styles. im not sure about blues either but i can recomend the drummers bible as a great starting point for every genre. you should be able to find something on blues in there. and if all else fails then drummers forums are pretty knowlageable too

  • well its depends what your wanting to play with what drummers you listen to properly. i like prog so i listen to mike portnoy and neil peart, tomas haake, martin lopez, axenrot, danny carey. drummers like that but it all depends really. give them a listen though if your into prog

  • hooray for moon gel

  • Your sick omg xd i'm going to learn that fill xd

  • good video

    RLRLKK works to though

  • Dammit! I practiced the fill RRLRLK

  • LOL

  • Pat Petrillo has shown this VERY fill, and others, on his DVD..hmm...

  • As many many others

  • dude thank you very much for this lesson, it was just what i was looking for

  • really useful mate, thanks a lot

  • awsome fukin idea dude im gunna practice that until i get it up to speed, thanks

  • buddy fukin rich my friend, danny carrey, enough said

  • dont forget gavin harrison

  • yeah there are alot more true but i dont wanna go naming a billion

  • I am a Bonham inflected drummer, love your drum sound and chops. GREAT!

  • and very well you should play Zildjian, get yourself some Evans skins and some DW slicks and you'll be right on track my friend.

  • It doesn't matter what brand, as long as it's a higher end cymbal, head or drum kit. Zildjian is no better than Sabian or Paiste. I play Zildjian Custom K's, but I also have a set of Paiste Signatures that are very nice, and are my preferred "live" cymbals due to their unique tone and sound when mic'd. Evans are great heads, but so are certain Remo and Aquarian heads. It's ridiculous to say Zildjian is "better" than Paiste or Sabian.

  • good drummers to listen to-Thomas Pridgen, Tony Royster Jr., Terry Bozzio, Dennis Chambers. They are all really fun to watch in aww

  • I think you left out some of the most important drummers during the past 30 years - Jeff Porcaro, Steve Gadd, Dave Weckl, John Bonham, John "JR" Robinson, Bernard Purdie, Rick Marotta.

  • Really interesting ideas. Consider yourself subscribed :P

  • nice lick. ima pactice this

  • Awesome. Thanks for sharing dude.

  • yay sabian yay!!!

  • I actually play Zildjian now :)

  • man you killn that!!!!!!!!!

  • i see this used in sheds all the time and now someone finally explained it!!

  • Very nice.

  • yeahh can you teach the groove

    its sounds really nice

  • Hey thanks alot and i'll try to get something up soon

    sam

  • thats great! keep going with those lessons theyr really good

by the way, is there any way you can teach us the rhythm you were playing there it was awesome (as in the groove you put the fills into)

    cheers

  • Awesome man!! You do really good lessons!

  • GREAT lick. Stealing this!

  • yeah doc...thats definitely a gospel lick...great job

  • very nice lick thanks

  • thanks man,...you are very wise,...and i,ll do my best,.

  • Nice...definitely gonna use it ;-)

  • thanks

  • Very nice! I see that as 5 over 1.

  • How do you explain that?

  • its a pattern that i use a fractional system to explain. 5 with the hands or rlrrl and one with the foot. The hand sticking can vary as long as it is five strokes. rlrlr. lrlrl. rrllr. llrrl. lrrlr etc.

  • I have a video that explains the concept with some examples.
