Wait wait wait! i've been seeing about people saying dont oppose playing with a pick which is true i mean, if you supposed to only play alternative fingering, why do you think such things as "bass picks" exsists?
stop criticizing bassplayers who play with picks. i'm not one, but i respect them coz there aint no wrong way in playing bass, except when you're playing the wrong notes on a song...so you all better shut it, only amateurs complain
Great job... I wish I could play with pick, but I started on finger, so I am much better at that... I can pick slightly... Very slightly... But suck with it. I actually love the pick tone, especially with overdrive... Ignore the bloody idiots complaining.
I don't usually play with a pick but this video made me start. that opening riff is so sweet and only sounds right with a pick. if it's ok to play a guitar with one's fingers it is alright to play a bass with a pick... oh and it's not the third guitar in this vid it's the only one... btw...
I once put a penny on the railroad tracks, waited for the train to flatten it, and then filed it into a pick shape. A very heavy metal sound, copper crushed by tons of rolling steel, playing on metal bass strings and amplified by metal magnets. Seemed like the thing to do for a metalhead in high school.
@RCAvhstape As dramatic and cool as this sounds, DON'T. I got my new bass a year or so ago and restrung it with awesome Black Beauties, which have a pitch black coat of Potassium (or something). Well no shit sherlock. Of course it does. Same with guitar(acoustic at least) it sounds more bassy without a pick. You may not like it but it's not useless. In genres such as punk and some others a pick can be used effectively giving it more of a treble sound and making it a bit more punchy and in your face
wow u guys are judgeing him cuz he uses a pick so wat alot of musicans who plays bass uses a pick chris from muse uses a pick mike dirt from green day uses a pick

@duckkeeper126058 yeah like my teacher said "the tone comes from the fingers" i think if ur playing metal, pick isnt a bad thing, now fingers are just more natural, pick sorta like mechanical xP
@ragnaroksama that is really stupid, there is nothing mechanical about using a pic, it's just more practical
its like you are saying that food doesnt taste good if you eat it with a knife and fork, but it does taste good when you eat it with your hands...seriously it makes that much sense
@Hubbleknarf now that actualy does make alotta sense :I i cant complain about picks cause i like 2 bassists that uses them, its just me when i use the pick it just doesnt go right (besides i mess up everything) i started playing with fingers too...but ill get to know how to use a pick cause playing fast stuff gives me cramps :( not cramps but hurts alot and if i dont stop then ill get cramps :x
@radyentreme98 marcus miller doesnt use a pick. victor wooten doesnt use a pick, heck.. i dont use a pick, and i play iron maiden, metallica, megadeth, and sometimes death metal.
@richogem Holy fuck your stupid. Don't even call your self a musician if you are that musically close minded. Trying something different isn't wrong. Also good job you can name two bassists!
@richogem So does that mean a guitarist has to always use a pick and if they don't they they should be bassists? Your logic is flawed and you're a dumb ass.
@BassPlayer44444 well i think making a bass sound punchy and in your face is bullshit. the bass connects between the harmony and the beat. the bass is not a third guitar.
@richogem Your opinion. Not fact. Tell that to Lemmy, Bill Wyman, John Paul Jones, John Entwhistle, Paul McCartney, Justin Chancellor, and soooo many others.
@richogem the bass is a guitar you idiot, hence bass-guitar. and the bass is the beat thats why its a rhythm instrument in the rhythm section aka the pocket. but there are cases such as primus in which its a lead instrument. if youre this close minded when it comes to music and you consider yourself a musician to any degree then you will never be anything more than a mediocre cover artist at best.
@richogem Well no shit sherlock. Of course it does. Same with guitar(acoustic at least) it sounds more bassy without a pick. You may not like it but it's not useless. In genres such as punk and some others a pick can be used effectively giving it more of a treble sound and making it a bit more punchy and in your face tone.
Billy Sheehan is great and all,but playing with a pick is still respectable and just plain old kicks ASS!!! The punch and power of every note is fantastic!!! Rock on my friend!
Love that gnarly, steely, trebly tone. I've gravitated towards playing bass, and I honestly think it's really boring when bassists just go for fingerpicking & getting a really fat, womp-y (can't think of a better word for it) tone. Fuck that!
well the thing is that guitar players always say the bass is easier, and since playing with a pick is arguably easier its only furthering the point that really isnt true. bt then when you tell the guitar player to use his fingers he cant, which is what makes the bass diffrent. so really bass players get offended by that b/c they don't want people to say the bass is easier. I mean i prefer my fingers but generally the only thing that using a pick will get you on bass is better tone
@deathtrack15 Why on earth for? The pick inspired me too play those guitarstic lines, and the attach and phrasing are unique with a pick. I could play it with fingers, but that would be another vibe entirely.
@MarloweDK i like. i also use pick on my bass as well. don't worry man. you're pretty good! ;D would u happen to be using only one string at a time or two or more there?
this is a tasty jam. write it yourself? i like it. if only it had some guitar doing a minute amount of guitar with a wah petal. that would make the song complete. great job
Guess what? This guy is using his fingers to hold the pick!!! This guy rocks hard w soul and talent!!! Ignore all the ignorant ranters and keep on your many paths as a musician.
Stumbled across this video while looking into different effects pedal vids... after seeing all the "bass players aren't supposed to play with picks" comments, I gotta say... GO TELL THAT TO LEMMY
@joshcop69 : Whoever said that should suck balls! First off, if they knew the history of the electric bass, a lot of early bass players were originally guitarists so they played with picks any way. The guys that converted from upright playing to electric also adapted to using picks. Personally, I've been playing 35 years and can't really get as loose with a pick as with thumb and fingers, but I'm not so closed minded. MarloweDK KILLS!!!
@joshcop69 : Also any bass player that really knows their shit will tell you, whether they use a pick or not, there are just some things that you can't do with your fingers that can be done with a pick and vice versa.
@soapman2005 stfu :) i dare you, attend a bass clinic and say all that. no, you don't even have to go to such a specific event to get fried. visit any casual jazz event maybe and i dare you to tell the musicians how bass to "you", has a role and playing in a different role is illegal. don't rant on youtube, coward.
@robs693x there's absolutely nothing wrong with using a pick and as professional as a bassist can get that's how professional he can get when using a pick. so mind telling me how using a pick is unprofessional? your remarks are biased.
@robs693x lol? I use picks sometimes, it makes a whole new different sound, prefect for some types of music. But of course, you don't know that, noob.
Quite an obvious response from a guitar player with limited thinking. Please stretch your horizons. Music is not about how well the guitar player shows hiz arse. The groove layed down here is REAL easy to follow if you have a pocket that's worth a damn. If you can't follow him on this, you just can't groove. Contrary to popular belief, the singer and guitar player MUST follow the foundation set buy the drum and bass. Not the other way around.
i hate how guitarist try to get all of the glory. cause they think there the whole dam show and some singers well without bass in those songs the guitar would just sound plain
Where did all these rules come from? Most people just play and study little bits at a time ... Music comes from within. if it was based on rule after rule it wouldnt be music .. i know some dude is going to say YOU NEED Rules look at classical or whatever .. and i say go F@ck yourself .. you stay on the road with rules while im off having a good time and playing because it makes me happy not so someone like you could tell me everything im doing wrong. ..o yeah .. next time just shut up! :)
imao the bassist job is to do wat ever the f*** he wants. period. i write music on bass and i solo on bass. no stereotypical preconceptions about the instrument i play. cliff burton thought that way. the ox thought that way. and countless other bassist thought that way so imma keep it goin.
Peter Steele Is A Great Bassist To Be Honest The Stuff He Plays On Bass Is The Easiest To Play But It Sounds Really Well Simple And Effective I Think, Same Here As A Bass Player I Dont Stick To The Drums, I Crack Out Bass Solo's And Somtimes Me An Guitariests Have Solo Battles :P
@BumChums08 Peter *used* to be a great bass player; now he's marginal thanks to the rewiring of his brain from chronic cocaine abuse. He still compensates for lack of speed and creativity with lots of chording and layering of effects, which sounds great... as do I, considering the only pseudo-formal "training' I ever had was from him on the tour bus or backstage in the mid-to-late 90s. His Carnivore stuff was amzing, back when .
Someone here actually had the idiotic gall to state "the goal of bass is to maintain low-end and rhythm with the drums."
Doing so makes 99pointfucking8% of music BORING.
Seriously, that kind of arrogant comment about the "goal of bass" is not only insulting to me as a bass player, but also makes me think this guy probably does tracks for dentist office Muzak and hold music for company phone systems.
He should go tell Peter Steele or Geddy Lee his commandment. Then they'll be famous one day.
@IntwatPapsmir and why is making music for Muzak such a bad thing? Oh wait....no i get it... your just jealous that you still live with your mom playing in a sum41 cover band trying to sound like Les Claypool while all your "homies" a secretly thinking jesus why dont you just play the part. And when your 30 and your still working at the local guitar center taking out the trash your gonna be pissed that you never learned how to stay in the pocket and play the changes with a killer groove.
@soapman2005 Oh my fucking GOD you're a dork. Your bland, boring arrogance is amusing... check your comments section on your page, since you sent me one, and since I don't want to leave 3 RESPONSES HERE like you did in a desperate attempt to pretend like you matter to anyone but you. Bitch.
@soapman2005 a sum41 cover band trying to sound les claypool? huh? les is nothing like sum41, btw are you saying les cant play a rythym because if you think youve never listend to primus, while i agree that for the most part, bassist should hold the rythym tey should also be allowed to solo at times and have their instrument heard.
@IntwatPapsmir I guarantee that the people working for Muzak can wipe you all over the floor in their playing. Just because you lay back in the groove doesnt mean youre a bad bass player it means you play like a bass player. If all bass players did was solo then music would be trash.
@IntwatPapsmir If you listen to Vic Wooten for example there is still a bassist laying in the groove behind him because he is taking the part of the vocalist or guitarists part. If you want to play solos all the time you should switch to guitar man cause your degrading the name of bassists everywhere. Oh and watch your mouth.
@soapman2005 I tried not to respond to this, but as a multi-instrumentalist it was far too infuriating not to. There is no "goal" to be achieved on Bass, nor any other instrument. There is many a great band where the role filled by a particular instrument varies. The Who, Primus, Rush and countless solo artists come to mind don't they?
I didn't mean for this to sound confrontational if it did. I just wanted to make the point that the role is determined by band and player, not instrument. Peace.
@soapman2005 he is not degrading bassist everywhere. to say that we are stuck only playing what the fucking guitar player wants so he can feed his ego instead of what we feel is degrading. Its the musician not the instrument that determines musical direction. you dont need a bass or guitar to continue to make music. while i agree that simple bass grooves are good, bass solos are just as awesome.
@IntwatPapsmir u know, i'm having a brother like that, i'm on the same side as you are, my bro on the guitar and me on the bass, he always wants my bass full up(i always turn off the bass) and yeah, it's annoying and boring :D
@IntwatPapsmir yea i know i man i agree its best to for the most part keep a rythym locking with te drums, but never let yourself on the low end always have your instrument equally heard, and its ok to play solos, and lead parts on the bass too.
If Clapton played bass, this is what would happen

Stumbled across this video while looking into different effects pedal vids... after seeing all the "bass players aren't supposed to play with picks" comments, I gotta say... GO TELL THAT TO LEMMY
joshcop69 1 year ago 31
@joshcop69 LOL the last ass hat who told Lemmy playing with a pick is lame ended up getting decapitated by Lemmy's awesomeness.

@joshcop69 Its a matter of preference... a lot of awesome bass players play with a pick.
deuce763 1 year ago
@joshcop69 : Whoever said that should suck balls! First off, if they knew the history of the electric bass, a lot of early bass players were originally guitarists so they played with picks any way. The guys that converted from upright playing to electric also adapted to using picks. Personally, I've been playing 35 years and can't really get as loose with a pick as with thumb and fingers, but I'm not so closed minded. MarloweDK KILLS!!!
wmdbassplayer 1 year ago
@joshcop69 : Also any bass player that really knows their shit will tell you, whether they use a pick or not, there are just some things that you can't do with your fingers that can be done with a pick and vice versa.

i agree, but lemmy is actually not a very good bassist ( at least technically ) but he is cool as fuck and thet makes it up^
CptChaos88 1 year ago
@joshcop69 Ha I read that his distortion effect isn't from a pedal, it's from playing as loud as he can LEGEND

@soapman2005 stfu :) i dare you, attend a bass clinic and say all that. no, you don't even have to go to such a specific event to get fried. visit any casual jazz event maybe and i dare you to tell the musicians how bass to "you", has a role and playing in a different role is illegal. don't rant on youtube, coward.
ihs0y 1 year ago
@robs693x there's absolutely nothing wrong with using a pick and as professional as a bassist can get that's how professional he can get when using a pick. so mind telling me how using a pick is unprofessional? your remarks are biased.
ihs0y 1 year ago
your a god man
TheCgnz 1 year ago
Good, but stop using a pick, it's unprofessional of a TRUE BASSIST to use a pick while playing
robs693x 1 year ago
@robs693x I daresay it's unprofessional to be biased against a certain technique instead of learning them both.
RandomDude85 1 year ago
@robs693x lol? I use picks sometimes, it makes a whole new different sound, prefect for some types of music. But of course, you don't know that, noob.

@GibsonElectricI

docparider88 1 year ago
imao the bassist job is to do wat ever the f*** he wants. period. i write music on bass and i solo on bass. no stereotypical preconceptions about the instrument i play. cliff burton thought that way. the ox thought that way. and countless other bassist thought that way so imma keep it goin.

Harder To Solo On A Bass
BumChums08 2 years ago
How long did it take you to write that?
Dkbass0 2 years ago 2

IntwatPapsmir 2 years ago 123
@IntwatPapsmir and why is making music for Muzak such a bad thing? Oh wait....no i get it... your just jealous that you still live with your mom playing in a sum41 cover band trying to sound like Les Claypool while all your "homies" a secretly thinking jesus why dont you just play the part. And when your 30 and your still working at the local guitar center taking out the trash your gonna be pissed that you never learned how to stay in the pocket and play the changes with a killer groove.
soapman2005 1 year ago
@soapman2005 Oh my fucking GOD you're a dork. Your bland, boring arrogance is amusing... check your comments section on your page, since you sent me one, and since I don't want to leave 3 RESPONSES HERE like you did in a desperate attempt to pretend like you matter to anyone but you. Bitch.
IntwatPapsmir 1 year ago
@soapman2005 a sum41 cover band trying to sound les claypool? huh? les is nothing like sum41, btw are you saying les cant play a rythym because if you think youve never listend to primus, while i agree that for the most part, bassist should hold the rythym tey should also be allowed to solo at times and have their instrument heard.
CJbass420 1 year ago
@IntwatPapsmir I guarantee that the people working for Muzak can wipe you all over the floor in their playing. Just because you lay back in the groove doesnt mean youre a bad bass player it means you play like a bass player. If all bass players did was solo then music would be trash.
soapman2005 1 year ago
@IntwatPapsmir If you listen to Vic Wooten for example there is still a bassist laying in the groove behind him because he is taking the part of the vocalist or guitarists part. If you want to play solos all the time you should switch to guitar man cause your degrading the name of bassists everywhere. Oh and watch your mouth.
soapman2005 1 year ago
@soapman2005 I tried not to respond to this, but as a multi-instrumentalist it was far too infuriating not to. There is no "goal" to be achieved on Bass, nor any other instrument. There is many a great band where the role filled by a particular instrument varies. The Who, Primus, Rush and countless solo artists come to mind don't they?
I didn't mean for this to sound confrontational if it did. I just wanted to make the point that the role is determined by band and player, not instrument. Peace.
stasgard 1 year ago

YOU SIR. Have made my freakin' day.
Cheers! Bass FTW.
bmxcanada26 1 year ago
@IntwatPapsmir yea i know i man i agree its best to for the most part keep a rythym locking with te drums, but never let yourself on the low end always have your instrument equally heard, and its ok to play solos, and lead parts on the bass too.
