I'm a black, gay, atheist grad student. I won't get into specifics, but I arrived at atheism after witnessing my family destroying themselves with religion. I would rather deal with myself by myself than believe in a god who cannot show the love, acceptance and peace that I need. And another person's words are simply words; they will never be enough to convince me that someone's out there, no matter how heartfelt they are. I guess it's a point of empathy. Most believers cannot empathize with me.
I wonder if MLK Jr. would've had as much impact and influence as he did if he had been atheist. I think that, unfortunately, he would've had to keep his atheism to himself if he wanted to garner credibility as a leader.
Im a 13 year old half white half black athiest who was forced into christianity. The past 3 or 4 years ive been extremely confused about religion do to the rediculous claims made that have no evidence 2 support them. Though im not a full out athiests- i believe that there are some things that we just cant explain- i do not believe in a god like they do.
When i was around 15-16 my mother was having a god lecture session. I finally got fed up and in the heat of the moment i said "I dont even believe in god." Me and my big mouth. T_T

I think the fact that there are not many black atheists is just more proof that religion is fake and has to be taught. If you go back in time to the days of slavery, who were the owners of slaves? It was rich, highly religious, republican types. They taught there slaves about religion and it has spread from there. Just like religious kids are taught. It is not something you just feel or know about. It is something that has been pounded into your head. Religious cults are a perfect example.

In some ways being homosexual is more logical; most of your oldest/closet friends are of your sex. Being married to someone of the same sex will probably go deeper/last for longer as you as the partner will have a lot more things in common. It is a biological reaction that makes you illogical (horny) which causes you to procreate with the opposite sex. Your genes are shellfish and they want to be passed on through this process. I say this as a heterosexual who has deal with the opposite sex.

@Clawdragoons It isn't always true that queer people and people of certain religions 'pass' as the dominant group, it also isn't true that race is always straightforward and that minorities do not sometimes 'pass'. As a queer person who does not blend well, there are actually many situations where it is a relief. Passing has its own brutalities as does being obviously of the oppressed group.
Personally, I've always been glad that I don't really mesh with the majority (although for reasons separate from the fact I'm a zoophile, although that does add to my personal feeling of not meshing). I consider it a bit of insulation from groupthink, if nothing else.

I think the fact that there are not many black atheists is just more proof that religion is fake and has to be taught. If you go back in time to the days of slavery, who were the owners of slaves? It was rich, highly religious, republican types. They taught there slaves about religion and it has spread from there. Just like religious kids are taught. It is not something you just feel or know about. It is something that has been pounded into your head. Religious cults are a perfect example.

I know many of you want everything to be all black and white, but it isn't. I like men. We do not debate on our preference for other things, so why this? I hate peas and love corn. There is no pea hating, corn loving gene; however I didn't choose this preference. I'd rather it be that I liked peas since they're good for me.

my brother and I are black/n.a atheists. we are the biggest black sheep in our entire family and on facebook, we sometimes have our atheist themed statuses and of course every1 rains down on us. during family reunions, every1 talks about god and we shut them down in an instant and they leave us alone like we never exsisted. i guess it does have an upside after all. even my mom regrets ever taking us to church

In some ways being homosexual is more logical; most of your oldest/closet friends are of your sex. Being married to someone of the same sex will probably go deeper/last for longer as you as the partner will have a lot more things in common. It is a biological reaction that makes you illogical (horny) which causes you to procreate with the opposite sex. Your genes are shellfish and they want to be passed on through this process. I say this as a heterosexual who has deal with the opposite sex.

There is no logical reason to hate homosexuals. Religion spreads hate about them. To all the people that say what they do is not natural, animals were having gay sex before humans even evolved. There's actually species of lizard that became asexual and has only females in the population. In order to stimulate egg production they hump each other, kinda like lizard scissoring. I'm an atheist and a zoophile, so I'm pretty far down on the oppression ladder as well, so I sympathize with what that guy must have gone through in his life.
Still, being black has the disadvantage that you can experience prejudice from people who you don't know, since they can determine your skin color on sight, as opposed to religion or sexual orientation.

@Clawdragoons It isn't always true that queer people and people of certain religions 'pass' as the dominant group, it also isn't true that race is always straightforward and that minorities do not sometimes 'pass'. As a queer person who does not blend well, there are actually many situations where it is a relief. Passing has its own brutalities as does being obviously of the oppressed group.

@jlompcm Sexuality isn't as cut and dry as gay/not gay. How many homosexual experiences are required before you're OFFICIALLY gay? Its much easier for a bisexual man to "choose" to not be gay than it would be for a man who is exclusively into guys.
