If you look at statistics from the battle of britain Germany lost 533 fighter aircraft and the British lost 1087. Germany did lose close to 1600 aircraft but over 1k were bombers. Since the British were primarily after the bombers not fighters this is to be expected.

It stopped manouvreing and just flew in a straight line. The spit pilot flew alongside and saw the pilot just sitting looking straight ahead. He even signaled to the young man to get out but he didn't respond. Eventually the 109 stalled out and went in. The sight of that kid haunted the spit pilot for years.
Maybe the pilot had already taken a bullet and was injured or dead, maybe he had already bailed out, maybe he was struggling to open the canopy whose slide mechanism easily jammed if damage.

Once allied pilots where downed their air combat tour was generally over, either from being captured or not being allowed to return to the front in order to protect the secrets of the underground that helped them escape.

@Dextomus Germany may have had more aces, but only because they did not have enough pilots to rotate. They all flew until the end of the war or were shot down. American pilots had a certain amount of missions to fly and then they rotated back home to train and sell war bonds.
@TheTodd2u all top three german pilots survived the war. yes they didn't have as many guys as all the allies and in the end it was this that led them to eventualy loose the war.
The only advantage USAAF had was long range escort fighters. But even these had problems when coming up against Bf-109s and Fw-190. later versions of the P-51 did good against th luftwaffe but at this time it was realy just going downhill.
@Dextomus Yes, this was because allied fighter pilots were properly rotated and rested. In between tours they went to training squadrons to help train next pilots. But German pilots were were basically allowed to fight constantly, with no rest for years. This is why they were so exhausted, mentally and physically, at end of the war, when germany needed them most. They were a spent force and were absolutely exhausted, but with lots of kills! Lots of kills didnt save them though did it!!
@MultiplexCargo It's not cannons IMO. A 30mm hit would remove the wing with one shell, as proved under test conditions. This Spits is hit multiple times. Even 20mm fire would have resulted in much more damage. I think this is just the .792's
@tommiatkins The first thing to look at is the fact that the bullets comes from a single barrel, and already then it's moest likely to be the cannon in the nose. The other thing here is the fact that a 7.92 round would not do that much damage as the wideo shows each impact does. maybe in test conditions a 30 mm round could remove the wing in one hit, but this is not test conditions. and there is large parts of the spitfire coming off too, i'll bet my money on a 20 mm nose cannon.
@MultiplexCargo What everyone is missing out on is the fact that the "Bullets or cannon" fire they are seeing is Tracer rounds which were installed on a ammo belt 3 or 4 rounds apart 20mm cannon rounds often mixed to include HE, Solid shot and tracer. The BF-109 had it's camara is the right wing and your watching the middle cannon fire . He might of ran out of bullets Or was using a tatic such as ( close range fire ) Cannons suck when at long range defectionAnd yes that spit was movingaround
Most likely 20mm HE cannon rounds. Could be 30mm, but probably 20mm. Hard to tell without knowing the exact type of 109 that's firing. It's coming from a single barrel though, so could be either.
I think that earlier in the engagement, the Spitfire pilot was killed and that's why the aircraft was flying straight and level while being shot at. After taking those 20mm cannon hits, firing what looked to me like HE shells, the plane's control surfaces were destroyed and then he nosed down and that was the end of him.

That's why the rounds are passing over the aircraft at times, because the Spitfire is diving.

@Dextomus Germany may have had more aces, but only because they did not have enough pilots to rotate. They all flew until the end of the war or were shot down. American pilots had a certain amount of missions to fly and then they rotated back home to train and sell war bonds.

@TheTodd2u all top three german pilots survived the war. yes they didn't have as many guys as all the allies and in the end it was this that led them to eventualy loose the war.
The only advantage USAAF had was long range escort fighters. But even these had problems when coming up against Bf-109s and Fw-190. later versions of the P-51 did good against th luftwaffe but at this time it was realy just going downhill.

@Dextomus Yes, this was because allied fighter pilots were properly rotated and rested. In between tours they went to training squadrons to help train next pilots. But German pilots were were basically allowed to fight constantly, with no rest for years. This is why they were so exhausted, mentally and physically, at end of the war, when germany needed them most. They were a spent force and were absolutely exhausted, but with lots of kills! Lots of kills didnt save them though did it!!

Most likely It's the nose cannons from a Bf 109 F type or older. And the nose cannons were fitted with 20 or 30 mm cannon rounds.

@MultiplexCargo It's not cannons IMO. A 30mm hit would remove the wing with one shell, as proved under test conditions. This Spits is hit multiple times. Even 20mm fire would have resulted in much more damage. I think this is just the .792's

@tommiatkins The first thing to look at is the fact that the bullets comes from a single barrel, and already then it's moest likely to be the cannon in the nose. The other thing here is the fact that a 7.92 round would not do that much damage as the wideo shows each impact does. maybe in test conditions a 30 mm round could remove the wing in one hit, but this is not test conditions. and there is large parts of the spitfire coming off too, i'll bet my money on a 20 mm nose cannon.

@MultiplexCargo What everyone is missing out on is the fact that the "Bullets or cannon" fire they are seeing is Tracer rounds which were installed on a ammo belt 3 or 4 rounds apart 20mm cannon rounds often mixed to include HE, Solid shot and tracer. The BF-109 had it's camara is the right wing and your watching the middle cannon fire . He might of ran out of bullets Or was using a tatic such as ( close range fire ) Cannons suck when at long range defectionAnd yes that spit was movingaround

I think that earlier in the engagement, the Spitfire pilot was killed and that's why the aircraft was flying straight and level while being shot at. After taking those 20mm cannon hits, firing what looked to me like HE shells, the plane's control surfaces were destroyed and then he nosed down and that was the end of him.

as the others have said, because the pilot was already dead
that's why he stopped shooting !

@CHAIYANSERN - The pilot would not know if the other pilot was dead or not. Of course, he could always use the radio and say, "Hey, are you dead yet?"
