I thought this commercial was awesome as a kid and what made it great for me was the fact that it confirmed MKII was coming to the SNES. If you lived through the time period it is pretty easy to see this was just Nintendo trying to take the crown as the gritty mature system from the Genesis. This was also about 3 years into the SNES's life cycle so they were also trying to keep or regain some owners who were kids when the bought the system but were entering their pre and early teens.

this was one of the worst marketing campaigns in gaming history. I think I was 14 when I first saw it and immediately saw Nintendo as that dork teacher trying to be cool with his students. we had a word for that then, I think it's still in use today, POSER.

I loved my SNES, but are you seriously that suckered in by ad campaigns? They wanted you to think they were rebels. The truth was very different. Do you think Herbal Essences shampoo really made women moan in pleasure?

@EricNinden I didn't say the games were rebellious, I said the gamers were. The kids who played stuff like mortal kombat and turrok. Late 80's and 90's kids who wanted something bloody to gross out their mom's (like the Dead Space 2 commercials). Obviously most of nintendo's own games were tame, but that didn't mean the market they were advertising to was all goody two-shoes. These ads were to the skateboarding, nirvana blasting, angsty teens, not to your mom's yoga class like they are now.

@EricNinden You can believe what you want but I lived through it and remember all of this going on. Maybe it was because I lived in Washington State I remember all of the skater/stoner/gamer kids into their grunge music, but I knew a bunch of kids that lived like that, seems pretty truthful to me.

@EricNinden It is my birthdate. While I don't remember this specific commercial, I remember stuff as early as 93 and 94 pretty distinctly. I moved when I was young, so the change in house and everything left the details pretty well imprinted from kindergarten years. Laugh if you want, but kids like that are still around (most of the stoner grunge kids from back then are still stoner grunge kids now... they don't change much).

It's great to look back and see that when we were kids and watching "good value programming" on Saturday mornings, we were getting cool ass commercials with the Butthole Surfers playing in the background in between cartoons. Don't get that nowadays, that's for sure.

Nintendo, I think, was doing a new ad campaign for Videogames, back in 1995-1996. I was a Nintendo Subscriber back then, and I got something similar to this in the mail on a VHS tape. pretty sweet if you ask me!
