Thank you very much for this - it really is excellent. I'm a newbie to the Gimp and it would have taken me days to figure out how to do this, particularly as I had to install the Layer plugin, but I needed a watermarking utility quickly. So not only has this filled my need but it's taught me aspects of the Gimp as well, plus it's far more flexible than standard watermarking utilities.
thanks for posting this but wow, thats complicated!!
Picasa from google is free it let you water mark all your photos in a file by
1- selecting the file, 2- then click the file menu in top right and
3- click export picture to folder. 4.Theres a watermark tab to check,
5 then you type your name!! Wow quick and fast but it will only let you do 1 line and you can't change the font. Its much more simple than this also this is custom!!! Theres a video post on youtube with no sound showing.
@drewmichael25 - Yes I use picasa too, but this is a more complex watermark than picasa can do - and it's not solely limited to text - you could even incorporate a logo or other graphic. And once you have your watermark brush then watermarking is simple. You don't have to do this everytime - the brush is stored in GIMP for future use.
@drewmichael25 Picasa can't do anything quite like this. This is advanced, it's not meant to be quick. Once you have made the brush -- it's reusable, a single click makes the watermark. This tutorial adds bevel effects and other touches unavailable in picasa.
how do i make the dialogue smaller its too big for my screen and i cant get to click the preview or ok buttons it wont let me make it smaller using the arrows
@kimbling2000 If you are using Windows, you may need to increase your screen resolution in your display settings. Failing that you could try moving the dialog so you can see the bottom of it. It is possible to click and drag it to a different position. The layer effects dialog can be made bigger, but not smaller than it's default size.
@kimbling2000 - you need to have python installed. See the instructions in my video description. If you don't have Python, you can use the Script-Fu version of the layer effects filer (the one with the .scm extension)
@gilbie38 To get the layer effects you need to follow the instructions in the description directly under my video. Click "Show More" and you will see them. All the links are there. Sorry I can't post the links here - Youtube doesn't allow links in posts.
Followed all steps, (installed scriptfu version). but when I go to use the brush, it won't paint it. I use the pencil, and it will only make it full opacity, no matter what i scale it down to (under 50% its invisible). Anyone else seeing this issue?
@Ark205 - you don't use the pencil tool - you need to use the brush tool like I have shown on the video, then select the newly created brush from the brushes dialog. You also need to make sure you have nothing selected on your image before using the brush and you need to make sure you are on the correct layer - the layer your image is on - if you have an other layer selected, it probably won't work.
@billps34 Thanks for the reply. I found out what happened. Turns out it doesn't work with PNG files. I saved the file as a JPG, reopened it, and it worked fine. Not sure if anyone else had that problem. Great video btw, thanks Billps34!
@Ark205 You might find it's got something to do with the colour mode being set to indexed mode. You can try this, open your PNG then click Image > Mode > RGB, now it should work without having to save it as a JPG.
Hi, where do i find the SHOW MORE option? I am having the same problem not finding the layers effect. you say clickon show more under the description but im lost here. is it on the actual program or do i have to search it on the web?
@darguel1 You need to click on "Show More" under the description directly under my video tutorial in youtube. There you will find all the links you need to get the layer effects plugin. I'm sorry but I can't type the links in this message because Youtube doesn't allow it.
@ShinyDiamondDev - not sure what you mean by that - what exactly do you want to apply a semi transparent effect to? If you can describe it a bit more, I'll try and make a tutorial if I get the time. I'm always looking for good ideas to do tutorials on.
hi , tutorial has been reaaly great .. but i amnot getting option of step 9 where by we clicl on Layer > Layer Effect .. this option is not there in GIMP 2.6 ...
so if u cud help here on ..becoz beyond this o am not able to move . thanks
@DiscoverIndia2010 - you need to click on "Show Sore" under the description. It tells you how to get the layer effects plugin in GIMP - it's a separate download. All the links are there.
@renzokukenleonhart You can make a watermark or a brush from any image in GIMP. Using the techniques in this tutorial, all you would need is use the image you want then save it as the .gbr instead of the text I used to make the brush.
@billps34 Thank you. And another question, have you ever used the plug-in sinedots II on gimp? If so, can you help me with how to get it to open. I've downloaded it, unzipped it, copy & paste into the gimp plug-in folder, and tried to open it but keep getting a message that windows cannot open the file.
@renzokukenleonhart I've never used that plug-in, but a quick search online shows it's a Photoshop plug-in. To get Photoshop plug-ins to work in GIMP you need another plug-in called PSPI for GIMP. I can't post a link to it here but if you google "PSPI GIMP plugin" no doubt you will find it.
@billps34 Thanks I was able to get it working. About Layer Effect plug-in, I've downloaded the two files Layer effect and Python but I can't get it to work. I've put everything from the folder from Python support into the plug-in folder for GIMP and also the Layer effect into gimp plug-in as well. I opened GIMP and was asked to install Python support but needed to have the 2.5 version. Do u have these similar problems?
@renzokukenleonhart - I have Python installed, but I needed to reinstall GIMP so that it installs with Python Support - that is the easiest way to do it.
Respond to this video... Also do you know any programs that can be used to create guilloche patterns or used on image to give it the effect of being comprised of guilloche patterns. I want to create my own banknotes for games and want the notes to have the look of how real currency are. Thanks alot ur a great help.
@renzokukenleonhart patterns like that are created with vector image editing programs. The top one is Adobe Illustrator, but you can also get a very good open source vector image editor called Inkscape - it's at inkscape dot org
@MrInterject you don't have to use any layer effects if you don't want to. You could make the drop shadow and bevel layers manually, but to be honest it's more trouble than it's worth. You can get the layer effects plugin from GIMPs plugins registry - see the links in my description. It's free!
@showeeboy - you can't see the text because it is either the wrong colour (you can't see black text on a black background), or it might be too small. Close GIMP, then restart the program, and follow the tutorial exactly.
@showeeboy > Also you need to be able to see the layers dialog to do this tutorial. Click Windows > Recently closed docks > Layers, channels, paths . . . .
hi idk if ur still doing this but, i need help on making a watermark. How do i make a watermark using my own picture. I have a picture with my name and everything. And i want to make it in a circle shape and make it into a watermark. How do i do that?
@Wiz4Rd7 You can make circles in GIMP using the circle select tool, then you can fill it with the colour you want. When you've finished making your watermark just save it as a brush instead. If you watch the video, it shows you how to save something as a brush in GIMP.
I'm following every step, but my siggy is not coming up in the brushes place :C
