RIP Keith Knudsen (drums/vocals), Bobby LaKind (percussion/vocals) and Cornelius Bumpus (sax/keyboards/vocals), with an honourable mention to Michael Jackson himself (background vocals)
The Bros opened their 1979 Minute By Minute Tour shows with Here To Love You.
It was a lengthy, extended intro on drums with Keith and Chet, with the rest of the guys taking their time, walking on stage. McD got the biggest applause. Saw three consecutive shows up at Alpine Valley that summer, one of which was taped for Soundstage.
Where is this from? What's up with the tux on all of them? A benefit? I've never heard of a gig without Pat Simmons. Like to know the story on this one.
I kinda remember this performance. If memory serves me this was an appearance at one of the awards shows or something similar. (grammys, emmys or something like it)
This band was very good in the beginning, but Michael McDonald put them over the top. His voice and keyboard was the X-factor for this group. He made them stand out because they transformed into an R&B group that no rock group could out-sing.
Wow! That's some heavy duty Doobie history! I didn't know they made an appearance without Pat. They sound great, but Mike & Keith made the right call. It really isn't the Doobie Brothers anymore without Pat Simmons.
This was taken from "The Night of 100 Stars" recorded at Carnegie Hall in NYC late 1981.
Pat had actually left the band at this point. It was during rehearsals for this event that Keith & Michael pretty much figured it was pointless to continue the Doobie Brothers without Pat. If not for Pat agreeing to rejoin the band for a brief "Farewell Tour" in the summer of 1982, this would have been the Doobies final performance.
I recall this show was for some Prince's trust concert. Thanks for this super post - have been waiting for it for the longest time. Pat Simmons? He had commuting problems! Evryone lived in LA, he was in SF!
Willie Weeks came in the band to replace Tiran Porter on Bass in 1980. So this has to be 1980-1982 with the line up from the One Step Closer Tour. Why no Pat Simmions?
Sad part of this clip is that THREE fellas are no longer among us - sax hammond organ man Cornelius Bumpus, left drummer Chet McCracken and percussionist Bobby LaKind have all passed on.
thank you .

Love this song. This live version was too short. If anyone has the record please post the song. Thanks sneakertokyo for posting this version.

How are you so sure? The drums look a little off and it sounds very much like the studio version, but these guys are musicians.

The Doobie Brothers arn't The Doobie Brothers without TOM JOHNSTON, McDonald is good but I prefer the sound/style of JOHNSTON's voice.

So many Steely Dan people! This is probably the most soulful song of the band.
