Just press your lips together and blow - I'm teaching myself - it just takes a hell of a lot of practice. Talk to a brass player. You can get a greater range than what you see Mr. Turre doing on a single shell. I haven't found an ethical and reliable source of shells so right now I am limited to one shell.
Jazz that sounds...jazzy...who woulda thunk? I guess because you don't like, or more likely cannot comprehend it, it must be elitist. You are like the Emperor in "Amadeus", Steve just played "too many notes" for you, ha bud?
I saw this guy when he performed at Holyoke Community College's Jazzfest this year and I met him the day after. Great player and a great guy for sure.
that is nice, but it is not an discovery or or invention because the incas usually used that instrument called "pututo" in the religious ceremonies of cuzco- peru
It's great to read that so many people are watching my conch vids. Many of you had such encouraging things to say. It's great to hear that others are finally noticing that Turre sucks hard compared to me.
Actually, you're wrong. The majority of POPULAR music is based off of 1-4-5. But you fail to realize that much of jazz and classical do not adhere to the same principles.
I like how "Blacklungsjoe" rallies all of his mindless friends on youtube in bashing Turre. Most of them quite obviously know very little about actually playing music. Noodling out pop melodies on any instrument hardly gives one any prowess as a musician.
Turre definitely gets the recognition, but he could stand to pay attention to the younger shell players. Blacklungsjoe definitely has an amazing range & totally in tone. Turre sounds like he is constantly spitting in the shell for lack of better shell playing MUSIC
If no one cared, this post wouldn't be worth watching or commenting to. New and innovative muscians are the ones who bring ART to shell playing. Turre has more exposure & "the name" so he doesn't need to push the limits and explore the future of shell playing like blacklungsjoe does. That's what truly makes a better muscian! Keep up the playing, Blacklungsjoe--and the smack talk is entertaining too. Don't lose the attitude!
Your right in many ways. I'm sorry for making lofty remarks about my own playing. Steve plays with awesome Brasswind techniques that i don't possess. What i do have, however, is a hand technique that allows for more notes. I hope this realtively young artform blossoms with both our influences.
This arrogant sherade is just to bring attention to Our unknown artform. Steve and I both contribute to the survival of our rare art. I hope he understands this is an act.

Straight up Steve is not better than me. I have way better tone quality, and can play many nore notes (in tune) on a single shell than steve could dream about. I don't need to play two at once becuase it's stupid, Ive turned the shell into a real instrument with many notes, hell I have enough range play french horn parts in my college orchestra.
Whatever dude. Steve is three times my age, I'm kid. Obviously I will be way better in the future than steve could even imagine. But i will still use shell for rock and reggea before jazz. This does not make me less of a muscian.
Yeah this is amazing just this past week on Thursday the 19 he played a concert with us at Kent State with the jazz band and we played this song as he played the shells. Let me tell you it was AMAZING!!! That last chord almost made me cry.
I could and will share this as much and whenever possible

Hey Misty...The reason it sounds jazzy might be that they're jazz musicians playing jazz.

Nice try but very lame. Too Jazzy to be anything authentic. Great elitist music for NPR.

Shells have a range of about a perfect fifth. . .he has great mouthpiece control. For whoever's wondering, his hand operates like a valve or a slide.

Actually that's a 7-3-2 he's playing.

I thought this would be corny, and I was wrong. Holy crap. The late, great Don Alias on percussion, and a cool version of 'All Blues.'

Nice circular breathing at the end : the sound stays pretty much the same, and I guess it must be really difficult in a conch...
