  • Do you think it's remotely possible that any human being, past or living, will ever be honored with a funeral like this one ever again?

  • If people like this they should look up 'funeral ikos' by tavener also.

  • Song for Athene is a stunning piece of music and whether an advocate or otherwise of the Monarchy, it is difficult to deny that Diana's funeral was truly moving. Listening to the powerful choral voices as they resonated through Westminster Abbey almost seemed to bring alive a thousand years of British history. Britain may no longer be a great power and like many other nations have we much shame in our colonial past, yet we should be proud of the amazing things our country has given to the worl

  • such a prefect choice of music - wonderful and moving and as the music ends you notice that strong light shinning through the Cathedral door - welcoming a dear troubled sole to rest.

  • The sound of the Welsh Guards boots on the tiled floor, to this haunting music...was the most moving moment I have ever experienced. Listen to the footsteps...

  • Though I am a yank and proud of it,The tragic loss of Diana grieved me and most of the World ,She was truly Princess to us all....

  • I still get teary eyed when I see this. This song has such a medieval haunting sound to it. Very fitting for the death of a princess. We will always love and miss you Diana, Princess of Wales.

  • I too, Tribecatom, cried my eyes out during the performance of "Song for Athene". This is truly the most incredible piece of choral music. The soloist singing that singular note for countless beats, echoing like the wind carrying a spirit to a higher place, is both haunting and beautiful. God Bless Diana and her sons.

  • @klickenpod A very good question, about the respectful silence. Did you mean individual countries, or did you mean broadcasters in UK, or individuals? I thought this moment of silence was so special.

  • I cannot help but cry to this song, this is suitable to honor a friend of mine who unexpectedly passed away a few days ago. I'm still in sadness and grief.

  • @klickenpod Yes.

  • i did and watch it diana will b missed so much i cant wait till william is king

  • The song ".....for Athene" is so moving and I will never forget it....I get chills

  • I got up in the middle of the night to watch this. I didn't trust my VCR, and besides it wouldn't have been the same.

I sympathize, I was bawling for her loss by the end of the service. I still have tears in my eyes every August on that terrible anniversary.

I'll never forget how Princess Diana hugged and comforted a man dying from HIV, how she always led by example, she showed no fear. She helped humanize the face of AIDS, she helped banish the fear. She's still the queen of people's hearts.

  • 13 yrs ago???My god, where did it go.

  • For me, it's one of those ethereal milestones in life - like the death of President Kennedy or of Dr King. You never forget where you were when you heard the news and the music forever encapsulates it. Charles promised her a throne, but instead gave her a catafalque.

  • @klickenpod The whole British nation held a minute of silence.

  • @tribecatom I meant while they were watching it on youtube. I felt compelled to be silent. This was stunning.

  • @tribecatom,

Actually, I think most of the world who watched via TV observed that minute's silence. I know we did in Los Angeles.

  • Can anybody tell me what has been going on with the charities that Diana supported? Diana worked so hard to make life better for children, and she was tireless in her efforts against land mines. What has gone on, to advance her work, after her death? I hope this has gone on, as Diana had dedicated herself to making things better in these areas.

  • i remember getting woken up at 5:00am by my dad to watch this. i was 4 at the time, and i specifically remember the minute of silence part, due to how quiet it was. that was 13 years ago. im 17 now, and it still sticks out in my mind. thank u for putting this up, bringing back memories and such. these are memories that are worth remembering

  • @ThreeSpheres909 You're welcome!

  • Thank you, tribecatom, for this special and moving video.

  • @ja3399 You're welcome!

  • I still cry when I come to this part of Diana's funeral. I have, unfortunately, attended many funerals for family and friends. And I cannot imagine what it must have been like for Diana's sons to have gone through this tragedy. This lovely, but so haunting, "Song for Athene," must have been so difficult for them because it grabs our emotions. They were still little boys then, but now they are men. I am sure they have not forgotten how much their mother loved them. RIP Diana.....

  • who decides which welsh guards get to be pall bareres? What an honor. I live here in the US and I know that much of us were greiving as well. I loved Diana even though I didn't know her. She had such compassion for people she didn't even know and for her sons. Camilla and Charles should be ashamed for what they put her through not to mention the queen. Charles never deserved her. I don't care how rich he is or was I would never marry someone like him. Camilla and him deserve each other.

  • Still makes me weep after all of this time has passed. There will never be another like her.......God rest her soul.

  • Thank you for posting this. Princess Diana's funeral was one of the saddest things one could ever see and hear, and it's hard to imagine how this song by John Tavener could be more profoundly moving. Words can hardly express the thoughts and emotions in those seven minutes. Hauntingly beautiful music and a truly unforgettable event to witness, albeit concerning the tragic nature of the human condition. Thank you again, tribecatom..Diana is missed by many.

  • @EastCoastDude You're welcome!

  • I still cry when I watch this. DEATH TO THE MEDIA - WHO KILLED HER.

  • May she find happiness. She was denied it on earth.

  • I know its been 13 years this August, but when you think about it, i still cant believe she is dead and the fact she has been dead for over a decade is beyond a joke!!

  • unbelievably beautiful and moving. RIP Diana

  • This is a great video, I love this hymn. It's too bad the narrator jib-jabs so much. Talking should be kept to a minimum.

  • @szqsk8 I heard no "jib-jabs" Flemming introduced the Taverner as soon as was possibe and then fell silent until after it was finished. I agree that talking should be kept to a minimum but the commentator had a duty to interpret to his worldwide ,multi- faith,-cultural and -racial audience the intricacies of a very British ceremony. This (I think) he did to perfection!!

  • R.I.P Tom Fleming

  • Every time I see this video or hear this particular hymn, I get goose bumps and chills. It is so haunting and just makes me think of my own mortality. I think whoever chose this song for Princess Diana's funeral exit, was an absolute visionary.

  • @BellaPeninah Yes, Bella...P..., "Song for Athene" haunts us still. All of us will die someday, and we know this, but this tragic event made so many around the world give a lot of thought to this. I agree, this was a visionary choice for music as Diana's coffin was carried out of the Abbey. My heart breaks, for the emotions and loss her sons must have been feeling. They are men now, and this event soon will be 13 yrs ago. What has become of D's charities, that she worked so hard for?

  • As much as I joined in the country's grief for the passing of this beautiful princess, there was another death that occurred during this time. That of Sir Georg Solti, probably one of the world's greatest conductors. His passing went almost unnoticed by anyone. I had the distinct privilege to be conducted by him whilst singing with the London Philharmonic Choir. He had a mighty presence!

  • things always seem to come for those you have feelings for, descending order, Diana, then way back the rest. I miss John denver too.

  • The ending crescendo at the door's opening is what I've always dreamed it would sound like when you ascend to Heaven. Simply beautiful.

  • It was a rough day for me. Diana and Mother Theresa.

Followed not even a month later by the death of my favorite singer, John Denver.

Not to mention that my 3rd Grade teacher had to leave for Bowel Cancer surgery- she was gone a whole semester.

Yeah. 97 was a tough time for me.

  • This is a beatyful funeral piece. Saw it live on TV. It brought a tear to my eye.

  • very beytiful

  • This was the day the world stopped. I don't know anyone that did not watch Diana's funeral. 5:57 of this video still gives me chills and makes me cry to this day......Rest In Peace Diana.......you are still so missed

  • It still moves me deeply and recently, I made an own compilation of Song for Athene. I'll never forget the moment, watching the TV and hearing this beautiful composition of Sir John Tavener.

  • This was a beautiful song to have at her funeral. I'd never heard it before, but I've listened to it many times since. Lovely and sad.

  • I remember watching this on television. It still hits me as hard today, as it did 12 years ago. : (

  • I still think of her..

  • this is the most beautiful and sad song i have ever heard........ so powerful...

  • what an inappropriate time to comment when such a classic piece was being presented.

  • As noted by others, what really sets this wonderful piece of music apart on this occasion is the haunting echo of 1st Battalion Welsh Guard slow march boot step on marble, what solemnity, what simplistic beauty.

  • This was perhaps the most moving part of the ceremony

  • whats the song which starts at 0:50?

  • @MrEhemaliger As explained in the title, it's "Song for Athene" by Sir John Tavener

  • Read the info on the side. There is quite a bit of information that you may appreciate.

  • why do all the good people die so young :(....

  • I sang this in Bergen County Chorus in NJ, it was sooo profound. And I almost was in tears.

  • Here's the text

Alleluia. May flights of angels sing thee to thy rest. Alleuia. Remember me, O Lord, when you come into your kingdom. A.. Give rest, O Lord, to your handmaid who has fallen asleep. A..The Choir of Saints have found the well spring of life & door of paradise. A.. Life: a shadow and a dream. A..Weeping at the grave creates the song. A.. A.. Come, enjoy rewards and crowns I have prepared for you.

From Shakespeare and the Russian Orthodox litanies

  • There is no better song for Princess Diana!

  • I first heard this piece shortly after my little brother died in a car accident. As I listened to the words "Weeping at the grave creates the sound Alleluia" it felt like God was speaking to me directly. I've never felt at such peace.

  • I was singing in the choir as a chorister.

  • Did it seem unreal to you?

  • British choral music is the most beautiful style ever! And I say that as a German (Bach, Buxtehude,...)

  • I also love the British choral tradition, especially the 20th century body. Benjamin Britten! Tavener has written some beautiful music as well.

  • Heartbreaking xx RIP xxx

  • I sang this at my old high school for concert choir.

Note wise, it's not that hard of a song but you have to build a connection with it.

  • we are doing this song as a lifting project at my college for my ear training class, it is amazing

  • Diana's funeral was the first time I heard this magnificent piece of choral music. Too bad the sound is so distorted on this clip. Go to the one posted by margotlorena for much better technical quality. I since purchased this piece on two CDs -- one a collection of Tavener pieces and one of the funeral. In the latter, the sound of the soldiers' boots on the marble floor of the Abbey add a sense of the inexorablility of time, for all of us.

  • the effect of this piece, in this setting and with these performers is simply incredible... the choir is exquisite, and the organ enters in such a manner as to be unnoticed... and then suddenly in the last few bars asserts itself with such a dark, noble character as to open the heaviest of hearts and give comfort....

  • An absoluelt magnificent choral piece....too bad we can't hear the beginning because the announcer wants to talk over it...too bad he can't shut his mouth for the choir

  • "May flights of angels sing thee to thy rest" If you look at the people attending the funeral,.....about half way through the video you can see the young princes. SO DESPERATELY SAD.

  • The princes are at the front. The media was strictly told not to film the royal family.

  • surely the most powerfull and moving part of the funeral service was the section at 5:51 - 6:37 where one felt the end of this life entering heaven .

  • addio lady di....possa tu ardere nei nostri cuori x sempre

  • Alleluia. May flights of angels sing thee to thy rest.

Alleluia. Remember me, o Lord, when you come into your kingdom.

Alleluia. Give rest, o Lord, to your handmaid who has fallen asleep.

Alleluia. The Choir of Saints have found the well-spring of life and door of paradise.

Alleluia. Life : a shadow and a dream.

Alleluia. Weeping at the grave creates the song : Alleluia.

Come, enjoy the rewards and crowns I have prepared for you.

  • 5:50 gives me the chills...

  • It's strange, I was only 6 when she died... but because at a young age she was shown to me so much over TV and newspapers, that I was really sad when I watched this. I cried and cried and I couldn't work out why, but the media made her image so prolific that I felt as if she was family.

  • When the organ is added at the end and they show the Cross I get goosebumps!

  • The Song for Athene without a doubt gave me chills when I first heard it, and nearly 12 years later it still gives me the chills. Very moving and sad piece. Very fit for a funeral of this stature.

  • Very moving, but ultimately, a song of hope - 'Come, enjoy crowns and rewards I have prepared for you'.

  • I have not seen this part of the Funeral in years. This song was soooo haunting. But so beautiful. I agree with another poster here in saying that when they were marching with her here, hearing the music, it hit me then she was truly gone and I started to cry. Then after this when the rang the bells I pretty much lost it. What a loss to the world that day in 1997......what a loss

  • me too I always remember hearing the music and the feet of the welsh gaurds two of the gaurds where from my home town and we where so proud of them.

  • Great song by Tavener

  • This part of the funeral really made me cry. The haunting procession music made me feel that she was really gone and how fragile life really is.

  • R.I.P. diana

  • Gone but never ever forgotten

Loved in death as she was in life

God bless you Diana we miss you so much !

  • What a terrible loss for our country, this will unite us as British people, the grief we felt for losing this magnificent Lady!

I hope her soul and outstanding humanitarian work continues for centuries after her tragic death! R.I.P Lady Diana! We will always adore you! I will certainly ensure my children know of the magic you created for our country! xxx

  • englishgirl69: You live in the UK, and I live in the US, half a world away In Seattle. I have not forgotten Diana's life, nor have I forgotten her death, which came far too soon. The work that she did, for those less fortunate, will endure. I found this site recently, and I hope that her work will go on, if only we can remember. englishgirl, are Diana's charities doing the work that she wanted them to do? Best wishes, from the other side of the pond....

  • i love this song i am in the Salem Community Theatre Youth Chorus we are singing this song and will be singing this song in Saint John the Divine church in NYC

  • my xbox 360 just died... ill be playing this when the coffin shows up...

    i'm gonna cry

  • show some respect

  • wat an idiot.

    have respect, prick

  • This song makes me cry.

    Its so poweful<3

  • I just wanted to thank you for posting all this. I've lived my entire life in New York City but I remember feeling that this wasn't just a massive loss to England but the entire world lost a woman who could have easily lived a life of nothing but luxury and not care but she didn't. She did as much to help the sick, poor and downtrodden as anyone. The world was a better place with Diana in it and I can't help but wonder what it would be like if she was still with us.

  • a beautiful and moving piece of music beautifully sung . . . sublime.

  • This was perhaps, the most moving part of the funeral

  • I certainly think it was. Seeing the soldiers line up during the last verse of Cwm Rhondda was what pushed me over edge emotionally. I didn't want them to come and take the coffin away...

  • Comment removed

  • @tribecatom I remember having that same feeling--when I saw them coming, I just felt like I didn't want to say goodbye and I'm sure I'm not alone in feeling that either. RIP.

  • @tribecatom I come back here to this haunting, beautiful song. Diana has been gone now for almost 13 years. Her sons were only 12 and 15 years old then, and what a terrible, emotional time this must have been for them. Thank God tv did not exploit their grief during her funeral. This song is so haunting. Hope, wherever Diana's soul went after her death, she was aware of the service, and grief and love that so many felt for her. "Athene" suits you Diana. RIP. Still miss and love you....

  • I agree I'm sure her sons felt the same.

  • I remember reading a magazine in which they made predictions at the beggining of 97 and they mention that in England they saw hearses, grief, and mourning, and that is exactly the images of this part of this funeral and this musical piece for remarkable woman to the british.

  • The Welsh Guards had to carry at least 200kgs there.Diana was laid in a lead lined coffin.

  • I always remember my dad saying those guards were hoeroes that day - the coffin must have been incredibly heavy and they carried it in such a noble way. I love this piece, it remains tha part of the funeral I recall the most - more so that Elton John or Verdi's Requiem or even Earl Spencer.

  • i think they did really well that day,you can see how heavy the coffin is,these are tought Welsh guards and the coffin wobbles here and there yet they keep their composure.

  • If tThe Queen gave the most famous woman in the world bodyguards and protection she would not be dead! Nasty old queenie!

  • Well the two bodyguards who did protect her both testified at the inquest that if Fayed had provided the necessary man power (i.e. 8 bodyguards) appropiate for the world's most famous woman, she would probably still be alive. Same goes if Diana hadn't decided to dispense with her Police close protection officers in 1994, she'd probably still be alive too. Paul Condon, the London police commissioner at the time testified he begged her to take her police protection back but she refused.

  • Diana did have protection but she got rid of them saying she wanted to get away from her old life, damn shame she didn't listen to reason.

  • Fool.

  • just an amazing piece of music.

    amazing top c.

  • beautiful song sung for a beautiful English Princess...may flights of Angels sing thee to thy Rest...In Life you were Cindreralla and in Death you are Sleeping Beauty

  • Nicest interpretation of this piece I've heard.

Can anyone tell me which choir was singing the funeral?

  • The choir of Westminster Abbey.

  • cheers!

  • @tribecatom well actually it is the BBC Singers and the Abbey Choir. With the greatest of respect to the Abbey choir, it simply would have limped to an end without the Singers...

  • @CDNPaul12 "Song for Athene" was so moving here. The Westminster Choir was singing. I cannot imagine how Diana's young sons, only 15 and 12 years old at this terrible time, could have got through her emotional funeral service. They are men now. I wish them well, but think that Diana's death must have had such a terrible effect on them. What has happened with the charities that Diana worked so hard for? Such a sad day, this funeral day. She loved her sons so much....

  • @CDNPaul12 The choir of Westminster Abbey did themselves proud on this sad day, didn't they?

  • Dumbo Ears honored Diana by marrying the woman he was having an affair with. What dignity and class.

  • And what about Diana´s affairs? It´s not only one partner´s fault when a marriage doesn´t work. And who asked him if he wanted to marry her?

(I´m sorry if there are mistakes - English isn´t my native language)

  • rest forever, our English Rose.

  • the most haunting song i have ever heard

  • agreed.

  • Its so hard to beleave that she in that coffin, for some reason I still think of her as being alive. her death was a real loss to the wold.

  • Well timed!

  • our family watched the whole funeral in total silence. wont ever forget it.

  • I remember watching the funeral live on TV and thinking this was the most beautiful piece of music I had ever heard. What a way to pass into the great beyond! RIP Diana...

  • amen

  • This is so beautiful! My concert choir is singing it it gives me the chills, I wish she was still alive.

  • what group is singing this piece?

  • The Choir of Westminster Abbey in 1997.

  • Keep silence for Diana but no more for children that Diana use to homage in Angola.

  • Tavener and Diana.

Both Angels tin an age that don't understand anything at all.

  • this is one of the hardest pieces of music I have ever performed...switches from major to minor all over the place...but so beautiful.

  • Epic and beautiful. A fitting tribute for Diana. I still can't believe she's gone.

  • i have performed "song for athene" with my chamber choir...so amazing!!!

    thanks to john tavener.

  • song for athene is one of the most beautiful pieces of work i've ever heard

  • To Bengali25: Yes, this is an exquisite piece of music, and so haunting. I remember this from Diana's funeral. I remember watching the funeral and tv and crying as this beautiful song was sung.

  • Goodbye England's Rose..

  • this was one of the saddest days in the world...RIP Princess

  • This song and the footage of the cross infront of the procession in the cathedral makes me beleive in heaven more than anything I have ever seen in my life.

  • R.I.P.

  • This was written for the memory of a little girl called Athena by John Taverner. You can find it on a cd of john taverners music. The words were compiled partly from Shakespeares Hamlet "Let flights of Angels sing thee to thy rest". It ends with "Come and enjoy the rewards and crowns I have prepared for you." If anybody wants all the words I will post them.

  • This is the most beautiful song I have ever heard.

  • This I feel was the most touching part of the funeral. Does anyone know where I can get this copy on CD?

  • Try ebay or Amazon. I got mine from Amazon for about £3 last year.

  • "We"? Who is the "we" that still misses her and hates Camilla? Speak for yourself. I hated every last minute of the sentimental, self indulgent blubbering over a woman people didn't know. That grief is for her family to feel.

  • Well said!

  • Why are people voting this comment down? It's very true! Diana may have been a beautiful, wonderful woman, but most people didn't actually know her at all. I appreciate the people's grief, but the mass sentimental blubbering *was* laid on too thick, and it cheapened the very real grief(well, presumably real, I don't know about all the conspiracy theories ;P) of those who were actually close to her. Well said, nigellaexpress.

  • "We" are the silent ones who do not hate Camilla.

"We" are the men and women who just serve.

"We" are the silent majority who hate outspoken morons like you.

"We" are the ones who cried like babies seeing the pain of her children.

"We" are the ones who served 17 years in the military and wished "We" could have shown our respect.

"We" are the ones who proudly watch her children serve in the military.

"We" wear our uniforms proudly, complete with Royal Insignia.

"You" just wear a green hat.

  • Up the Republic, keep on paying your taxes to keep these people in luxury, enjoy your serfdom.

That said, all deserve a decent funeral.

  • well done. Better now?

  • what gets me is you can here the footsteps of the royal gaurds through it

  • The British Army is the world's best at Drill.

and there are many Guard regiments.

  • beautiful piece of music....

  • I sang tenor on this song in 2006 while touring brazil wih the Grammy award winning Pacific boychoir academy most of the audience did not understand the words and yet over half of the audience would cry every performance

  • i have tried to find an mp3 of this song and failed miserably. does anyone have it?

  • this song can be heard on a CD called, "the classical album 2005"...do a google search and it will show up...also, i'm sure you can purchase it from most any website that sells CDs.

  • dixie I can email it to you,,,

  • I love this song!! But I wish if here was a better clip because the sound quality is not very good in this clip. :(

  • I'll up load a better quality version of it eventually. Probably in the summer.

  • tribecatom,

do u have the copy of DVD or whatever format of this honorable late Diana funeral service?

I would like to purchase it one. Please do reply me.

    Thanks.

  • Why Camill doesn't pay for her destruction??

Diana saw the really Queen of England.

  • After all these years our true queen still missed.

The one true Queen of England we miss you more now than ever before.

By the way no matter how much spin we truly hate Camilla !!!

  • After all these years you still reign supreme. Englishmen will never accept you were our Queen and always will be.

  • Alleluia. May flights of angels sing thee to thy rest.

Alleluia. Remember me, O Lord, when you come into your kingdom.

Alleluia. Give rest, O Lord, to your handmaid, who has fallen asleep.

Alleluia. The Choir of Saints have found the well-spring of life and door of Paradise.

Alleluia. Life: a shadow and a dream.

Alleluia. Weeping at the grave creates the song: Alleluia. Come, enjoy rewards and crowns I have prepared for you.

  • seriously id be shitting myself carrying that coffin.

  • This song is so sad and yet so touchingly beautiful. What a great "People's Princess" Diana was!!! I've never seen anything as popular before or after her existence. She was so merciful to everyone. So many charities. Why do the good die young? RIP Diana. It's kind of sad to think her body is buried all alone on that little oval island on Althorp estate...

  • why u said she been buried on the little oval island on althorp estate?

  • Beautiful music, i don't i will ever forget how beautiful the music was, it didn't seem like yesterday when it happened

  • I love you Diana! I am Greek and I have always admired your inner and external beauty. May the warmth of your heart remain bright for the people of your country and for all those who really cared and loved you!

  • we have not forgotten you dearest di. your boys are fine men and you can rest with pride. we loved you then and now. xxx, jules

  • So moving. Such a solemn piece of music.

  • so beautiful song! I sung it last year with my high school choral. My favorite part is from 5:51 to the end, the 'resuretion' Omg it make me Chill every time i listen it!
