Excellent Ideas, I used Kroot as Bishops, Drones as Knights and Stealthsuits as Rooks, thats Close combat bishops, flying knights and stealthy rooks, it works quite well across most armies. A Warhammer 40k chess board would be cool as well.
That's a good idea as well, I never thought of it that way. Stealth suits could be knights as well, I just made the Drones Rooks because of how they look. (I saw the clear stand and it reminded me of a rook.) I still haven't made this project but I'm getting money soon. Thank you for the idea!

I did a Imperial Guard vs Tyranids chess set. I had a female Commisar for the Queen, and I used a Zoanthrope as the Queen. Worked out very well.
