  • wow a whole lota people come n over to watch something the "dont" like kinda suspicious xD

  • Hahaha most overrated musician. Since when did barely being able to play your instrument become cool? Oh yeah when hipsters said so, lol.

  • @surfbum5412 have fun for about 40 more years until you die and are forgotten because you've got no story to tell.

  • @surfbum5412 if you don't like his music then why are you here?

  • @sydbarrett5 Aaaahhhhhahahaha my favorite come back line of all time. I'm a fan of Sparklehorse and decided to take a look because Mark Linkous produced one of his albums. After listening to "walking the Cow," I formed an opinion, expressed that opinion, and now I'm debating with non-musicians as to why it's good, yet you guys haven't given me a single objective and educated response.

  • Why I don't like it: Chord progression is the same in every song and comprised of 2-3 simple chords (i.e. G/D/A), Lyrics are way too literal and not enough ambiguity. As a musician, he really likes skills in keeping tempo and struggles with chord changes. And lastly, there are no layers of melody within the songs.

  • @surfbum5412 I didn't ask why you didn't like it (everyone is entitled to their tastes and opinions.) The question was why are you here watching this video if you don't like his music?

  • @sydbarrett5 And you didn't see my response? round and round with you faggots.

  • @surfbum5412 I dont think that Johnstons music is anything about technique, skills or complex compositions, but I dont know any other artist that is able to deliver such honest and unadorned feelings and passion. But this is just opinion.

  • @thetwilighttriforce good answer and FINALLY someone could tell me why D Johnston connects with them.

  • Realmente me gusta tu tributo (: Lucky stars in your eyes (8) es mi parte favorita

  • Lucky stars in your eyes

  • this is awesome!

  • great guy and awesome when I saw hiim live , this is the first song I fell in love with by him : )

  • As someone who is also bipolar, he has hit a note so close to my heart. I love everything he does, hes my idol. He is a genius in every sense of the word

  • @KellysBeans Do you play any instruments? If you did, you'd be laughing at yourself and your idiotic comment.

  • HI HOW ARE YOU?

  • im obsessed.

  • /1:00 on

  • jesus this man is amazing

  • The simple truth is..when you hear Daniel there's no denying you're hearing pure and sincere honesty. There's no ego or poseur bullshit.

  • this song gives me chills every time

  • im afraid to ask this but... is he still alive?

  • @AldenNH Yeah, he's still alive. He just turned 50 a couple months ago.

  • @AldenNH yes im sure he is still alive

  • the singer out of the flamiing lips rips this guy of so bad

  • From 3:20-3:27 it's almost a nod to the finale of A Day in the Life...

  • @rgallant Thats like saying any song with a whole note is like the finale to a day in the life

  • @unpuercofeo Of course any single note can be compared when your mind is that of spaghetti, it's more alike when you consider the flow of the song and also how big of a Beatles fan Johnston was. But I guess whatever it takes to get your post in, right?

  • @rgallant yes

  • The company of Daniel and drawing with him is my favorite memory ever

  • Great Artist.

  • Sounds like Half-Handed Cloud

  • great song

  • 4 ppl need to walk to cow

  • i get tears in my eyes eveytime he sings the chorus.

  • love him

  • i want to be a kid again

  • the pictures in the video are chilling...

  • Truly beautiful music. Nobody makes music like this anymore, they would rather sing about hoes and c-notes. Fuck it.

  • Aww man- I thought I'd make it through this song for the first time without a tear.

  • How come he sounds so young in this recording? Wasn't he like over 20 when this was released?

  • @genericaccounr Daniel Johnston is a baby in his universe. He lives forever.

  • i would love to meet daniel johnston

  • This is really....good........but I can't understand why. My brain hurts

  • thanks for the old version! yay.

  • Awesome tribute.

  • this was the song that hooked me. this and keep punching joe. immediately i knew that the was the entertainer for me.

  • the quote at the beginning made me cry

  • Of course you can walk a cow. You can walk anything that has legs.

  • You can't walk a cow.

  • @rgulbranso10 that is the point

  • I was reinforcing that point, Jonny.

  • this is on jackson rathbones playlist....

  • i am also walking the cow

  • from 0:40 to 0:50 its just amazing he have a really great talent , sometimes god is so unfair , i dont want to offend nobody its just my opinion

  • try to reach out but it's gone

but there are stars in your eyes

    im walking the cow

    john archer

    Saracee

i really don't know how i came here

    oooooooooooooooooo

  • It's how he says circles that's what's so likable about him.

  • Circles.

  • saw daniel tonight, he played this. i knew it would be good but i didn't think i'd be so awestruck that i would just stand there unable to move, blew me away so much

  • this was recorded with such shit equipment you can't even judge it. Still i love this song and most other DJ songs.

I can picture what it would sound like if done in a studio, and thats what i hear now when i play this video

  • dude Daniel has an awesome voice, your opinions dont matter, and I like it because I like it!

  • I'm a fan of Daniel to but seriously... not everyone likes everything you do, or I do, or what who ever else does. He said what he thinks in a decent way not just "oh daniel sucks". I think that's fair, he wasn't being disrespectful or anything. Chill.

Anyway, I forgot what I wanted to say about the song so I'll be unoriginal (but truthful) and say Daniel's music is great in my eyes.

  • Daniel Johnston is awesome enough to gain a metal head fan like me.

  • @GEETARS3 you're awesome!!!!

  • cmt02790

It's not that people like bad singing, it's that it's your opinion. There's all sorts of ways to make music, and everybody does the best they can to express this or that via their music. Of course he can sing; he has a voice and a mouth, and he uses them to expel emotions. You personally dislike his voice. Not synonymous.

  • he's a good singer. he hits the notes but most importantly he sounds honest in these songs like he's singing them because it's what he is not because he has time scheduled in a recording studio or because people showed up and paid to hear him. people aren't used to singers sounding like unique human beings. he's a fuckin good singer and that's all there is to it. his voice makes me tear up sometimes. SHIT!

  • @brokeneckgiraffe "people aren't used to singers sounding like unique human beings." Couldn't have been said any better than that.

  • @brokeneckgiraffe exactly right

  • With a little truth comes a lot of opinion. You just labelled everyone watching this, analyzed their motivation, and called his singing shit. I think you overanalyzed a little yourself but that's just me. I actually like his voice...The flaws that exist only serve to make it feel so stark and real. Some people get into music for those reasons but alot get into it because it's simply what makes them a little more happy.

  • you're horrible

  • Oh fuck of man Daniel Johnston is Lord!

  • @Samoriah face it, noise music sucks :)

  • @AUSROTTENY2K

Aus Rotten rules bro!!!! But daniel johnston sucks.

  • @Samoriah Sorry, but Aus Rotten is shit. Johnston is better :)

  • @AUSROTTENY2K

Compared to this shit Aus Rotten is fucking Beethoven.

  • @Samoriah And also like Beethoven, Aus Rotten is fucking lame and boring. Kinda like noise music :)

  • @Samoriah why would anybody try to compare daniel johnston and a mediocre crust band

  • thank you for posting this song..

been looking for it for a while .. thanks alot

    gotta love daniel johnston

  • I agree.

    Emotion over talent, always.

In fact, I don't really even believe in "talent".

You love something and feel passionate about it, and you work hard to accomplish it.(not that accomplishing is an accomplishment, it's all about being happy)

  • I completely agree with you.

  • Is the hi how are you phrase at the beging?

  • I simultaneously tear up and get goosebumps every time

  • i feel you.

  • lovely song, finding DJ was a struck of luck for me

  • much as i adore him

    i grow sad contemplating his

    abyss of solitude within.

wish he had found good love

  • i wish i made this.

  • que buen tema!! vamos daniel!

  • muy buen tema gracias daniel

  • when I watched the trailer, and he said

"hi I'm daniel johnston and this is my tape it's hi, how are you and i, i was having a nervouse breakdown when I recorded it"

    plus his art?

    I was in love

I'm madly in love with "I Had Lost My Mind"

and I love this because you can hear the musical nervouse breakdown

  • IS THIS C,Am,F,Dm

  • c am dm f verse chorus dm am em dm g

  • thanx

  • could you help me out with a more explicit transcription please??

i wnat to play this so badly, but i'm missing a few pieces

    thanks!!

  • One of his best songs for me.

    Everything about this is amazing.

  • I heard this really good danial Johnston song ages ago and ive been trying to find it maybe some one could help me, its about love but it sounds quite polished.

  • true love will find you in the end

    im thinking its that one

  • Maybe "Go", "Museum Of Love"

  • Or "Silly Love"

  • silly love, or crazy love

  • Walking the cow. Best song for me so far.

  • I love him. This song's awesome,

  • He sounds like a ten year old.

  • i always listen to this song if i feel like i need to have a good cry

  • you and me both

  • go fuck yourself

  • It's easy, you just take your mouth and move it, and say 'Daniel Johnston has talent'. Or use your hands and type it.

  • hey man i see how you can dislike this because all mainstream bullshit that we are fed is no longer true music for the most part, it's just overproduced albums by attractive people. However Daniel is music in it's true form, and that is expression.

  • Right. "Talent" like The Mars Volta? That would be boring.

  • I'll take true emotion over talent any day of the week. Technical proficiency in music without emotion is just having a wank. Case in point: Mars Volta. You, sir, are the one who should get the fuck out.

  • The best version of this song is the original version. Here it is.

Daniel Johnston is a genius my friends

  • I really believe it's a posibility Daniel Johnston may well have been a victim of unethical hypnosis. 5 years in a mental hospital couldn't have helped either,or the l.s.d.. to bad he tried to kill 2 people, it's the one thing that piss'es me off bout'em.

  • roky ericksons music is tottally different if you just like your musicians manic depressive phschitzos then you might find a reference point in that case check out wildman fischer wait another documentory i sense a connection but wild mans music is more similer i feel

  • thats two songs more than you

  • Pure. Sounds like an exposed heart to me.

  • beautiful song, i really like it.

  • holy comments ! thanks ! and please continue !

  • this isthe most astoundishing admixture(that how are youis froj thelily studies with dolphins). aif onlythis brother didn't haveto go the convservator Xian route rut but dcould had releafed himself with otter spiritualityhoods and not beenenslavered by his \own maladay

plus i have never seen him with no one andfear he has not true fiends nor lady to love as his honeybee, mais no? miasma sadness

  • this man is one of the great songwirters of all time. He is true!!!

  • Nice song

  • brilliant and very touching, funny too i must admit:-)and i think fun is an asset in music

  • why do people say hes the greatest of all time???? he had a brilliant sense of melody and good lyrics but come on, not the greatest ever not even close. walking the cow is probably my favorite by him

  • it's something that you either feel or don't, but daniels music has taken me from feeling absolutley and completely void and numb, to being able to appreiciate life again, this dosnt say much about him as it does the effect of sincere and heartfelt music.

  • 'HAD'? he's still alive and writing his best songs.

  • all i said was that he wasnt the greatest songwriter ever, and i get -2 and two mad comments. i thought that was a great comment about the guy, you people are wierdos and extremely defensive of him. creepy. almost as creepy as he is

  • Ahh Ronnie, Ronnie, Ronnie. Clearly your one of those soulless individuals who can only appreciate what is commercially fed to them. You poor individual. It is good to see that you tried. You came to Youtube. You listened. You missed the point completely.

  • lol whaa?? jesus christ you people are so incredibly defensive.

    holy shit.

look when i saw the documentary i was totally inspired and captivated, but that isn't to say i'll be listening to his music all the time now.

    lol

am i not allowed to totally respect the guy, and how amazing his life is, and you know..all the reasons you guys like him...but not think he's the greatest of all time or something or not want to listen to his songs a lot?! wtf? you guys are mean.

  • damn right

  • You are a pretentious moron. It's clear Ronnie does get it. Why am I attacking you without knowing you? You for no reason said he was soulless and mindless. If can't appreciate that other people like Daniel Johnston but like others a lot more then you don't "get it". Because you are missing out and tons of equally great if not greater music.

To everyone else:Isaac Brock has some early demos that appear on the end of the Sad Sappy Sucker album that sound a lot like this. They are really good

  • An outrage that psychiatric drugs destroyed Johnston's mind so much...

Today he's a shadow of his former self, and doesn't remember the words to most of his songs.

  • i hope one day they make a symphony of this song and sum other johnston songs. then the world could finally hear the wonderful and awesome music daniel has created.

  • I hope that too.

  • awsome song

  • thanks for uploading this. people must hear him.

  • I Agree !

  • I am really glad everyone likes this tribute so much! I really have no experience whatsoever in making things like this , but the response has been great. Thanks to you all .

  • well said I kept trying to put my finger on his Genius

  • What makes Daniel Johnson's music so sad for me is neither the honesty or simplicity behind the lyrics or music, but the realisation that I no longer have the gift of childish imagination that he has.

  • the childlike simplicity of his lyrics captures emotions far beyond what more complex songwriters have. I love this guy

  • great tribute!!!

  • sweeeet...i want one

lol i play a laptop keyboard (3 octaves) using a music program.

  • i know exactly what you mean. i pretty much have the same approach at making music. it doesnt have to perfectly rounded and polished...thats not what music is all about.

do you have anything recorded, im curious what your soul sounds like. check mine out...my space dot com/a5t0n3r

  • i can play the beginning part on keyboard but i find the music at the 40 second mark to be impossible to play solo. do you have to be on acid to do this one or did he not do it all in one take? i love this song... weird lyrics and music

  • I have to say , that I do believe that Daniel did most of his early songs in one take on a Organ . He just pressed play on his tape recorder and away he went. As you can often tell by the mistakes that he can make ( even in this song) and the quality of it aswell. I wouldnt change it for the world . Give it another try Punchwall. When I am teaching myself piano , I try not to think on what I am playing , I just play. You really have to feel it . As corny as that can sound.

  • Dude. You Should of Put up one of the Pictures

of Kurt Cobain wearing Daniel's "Hi, How Are You?" T-Shirt @ the 1992 MTV VMA Awards. =)

  • dude , Im a dudette

  • He was playing a chord organ which is like a 2 or three octave keyboard with any number of switches on the left that each play a sustained chord. He had a Rosedale model like David Bowie used, they're real cool, powered by a little fan motor and the switches make it real easy to get some cool sounding tunes even without much musical knowledge. Check out chord organs on ebay...

  • Daniel Johnston, Elliott Smith, Ian Curtis.

The 3 greatest songwriters that ever lived.

  • I agree with you Churchboose , overall I have to say that Daniel takes the cake though. There is just something about how he puts his words together . Brilliant !

    Cheers to you !

  • Furthermore and finally I guess the unsure feelings of why he should care or fear was maybe his response to his families concerns over how his lifestyle at the time was shaping his future and the lucky stars were in the eyes of his muse Laurie, who inspired him in walking the cow (writing music) and ultimately let that take him where he is today. That's just my take on it, thoughts?

  • Thank you all so much for your comments. I wonder where you read up on cows like that Scoliosispony, that would have been an interesting read , I wonder if you recall the link ?

  • Just thought some more, not to butt heads with Edhallick, but Daniel was living with his brother recording in the garage, doesn't know why he's there or staying, just walking the cow. Cows graze, walking one is pointless but walking the cow is simply doing anything at all just to feel like you're not wasting all your life sitting around in a place you don't belong. Maybe him making music was walking the cow at the time because his family thought it was all a waste.

  • This is an amazing song with amazing lyrics. To me he is saying he feels like he is wasting his life, going nowhere, feels directionless, but feels hope, he`s uplifted, when he sees or feels love. Brilliant. The cow analogy is particularly brilliant, a cow does nothing but graze and wait for death (slaughter).

  • he came to my town to play not too long ago , and I got the chance to see him live . He wasn't looking too well , I almost cried . As soon as he was done his set two people came on stage and escorted him off the stage and out the front doors . He was also shaking pretty bad while playing ... Im glad I got to see him live . Thanks for your comment , I truly understand where you are coming from mate , cheers

  • I liked what you were saying until the cow analogy part. Pretty insensitive to cows, which I only say after reading something about their complex emotions and social relationships. Wish I had a link, but apparently cows have cliques, hold grudges, and even fear for the future. Saying they only graze and wait for death is like saying people only work, buy, die...a point which could be argued well but is too narrow a concept to reflect any real truth.
