  • is there a full speed vid?

  • man this guy is full of shit :L cant even use a 3 section staff =__= watch donnie man.

  • What style of Kung Fu is this?

  • @TokinMystic12 Wah Lum.

  • To a poi/staff spinner, this really is not that amazing...

  • @daCrazi Is that similar to a gymnast saying that kickboxing isn't that amazing?

  • @ShredST Actually yeah, That seems like a good comparison i guess...I think there are more transferable skills from poi/staff spinning due to the three sections being sort of a combo of poi and staff

  • watch?v=FhAWWg8pnqg

  • this is one of my sifus

  • it doesn't matter how fast he does i can see him do it perfectly well i can see learn sometimes just by looking at him

  • Impressive.

  • hes a sifu hes gotten way better at it now

  • this guy teaches me hes a sifu now

  • This guy's form isn't that good at all. Even if it isn't donw at full speed, there were many moves that looked incredibly sloppy.

  • @Frostbite864 As it says in the description, the video is for his own personal reference. At the time the video was made, he was an instructor of the kwoon you see here. The job implies that he needed to memorize both empty hand forms and weapon forms from Seven Star Praying Mantis, Chang Chuan, and Wah Lum kung fu styles. Think of the video as a general outline for the Wah Lum 3 section staff to aid in teaching, not a symptom of vanity.

  • Is the throwing technique at the fifty second mark adapted from the rope dart?

  • this dude is now a sifu an teaches me

  • I hear the tri-sectioned staff has got to be the ultimate weapon, when one side is nuetralized, the other can replace oncommand

  • what style are you training?

  • @mcprorck that what i seems like, but actually very different, the the section staff is used alot like escrima sticks. my instructor practiced with nunchucks and thought he could do the 3 sec staff, and told me he hit himself a lot, they are 2 different weapons for a reason ^.^

  • @BBTBG1 jet li would not wear something that baggy, and come on he would never need to use a weapon

  • @maximusgladi8or

    jet li uses weapons

  • @maximusgladi8or Jet Li was a member of the BeiJing Wushu team in the eraly 70's and he used all sorts of weapons. A requirement actually to be a team member, He was especially good at the broadsword. And yes he wore clothes THAT baggy, Chinese uniforms ar pretty much the same. He sometimes wore the pants and a shirt similar to a polo shirt.

  • potentially you can hit your nuts sack with one middle and still manage to whack yourself in the face with the end (:

  • nice form it looks like you practice a lot

  • @mcprorck

    Deffo!

  • @mcprorck They sell shorter ones meant for people of smaller stature. However it would not matter, with proper control you could use any length of san jie gun. The real key is mastering your fear. I would recommend having two, a foam one and a wooden one. The foam for trying out new techniques, and the wooden for practicing them and mastering them.

  • slow

  • @mcprorck

Only way to know is to have a go.

Im 6,1" tall and they scared the crap outta me when I first tried, 3yrs on Im still learning but not as scared. If I was your age i'd jump at the chance.

I started with chucks too, luv em!

  • great job, James! I appreciate how you perform each movement slowly and clearly so that others can learn from you. I only remember parts of this set that you taught me, and this is helping me get back into practicing it.

For all those haters that have commented; listen, this guy can really use this weapon - I've seen it - he is doing us a favor by demonstrating, slowly, its use. Anyone who knows this weapon must realize it is very difficult to use a sanzi slowly. Xiexie, James!

  • @centexshaolin "it is very difficult to use a sanzi" Tell me about it. When my Sifu gave me the school, he gave me a three section staff learn on my own using what I already knew, and really, that weapon frightens me, even before I clubed myself in the balls.

  • James i like you. You are my new friend.

  • your stances look like they need refinement, maybe 4 hours of horse back stance?

  • To beginners, if you apply yourself to your training this is one of the many things you will learn, isn't it cool?

Real advanced students would look on a fellow martial artist and say "good job, it will look even better with more practice".

a sifu would keep a long comment to himself and say something criptic-technical like "good control of the weapon" , "or good showing" or even better my favorite, "MMmmhh" with a couple of nods .

if you love martial arts, don't put others down.

    amituofo.

  • ... ok?

  • i do rope dart and nunchaku and im wondering if 3 section staff is as accurate and amazing cuz id love to have something new in my shaolin arsonal

  • @MrPjslide the Sanjiegun isn't a shaolin weapon, traditionaly

  • @KappaKiller108 terribly sorry for my false stating for you see i am not well educated... haha ya

  • wtf man:|

  • That was awesome!

  • Nice work. I wished it would of been at full speed but regardless of that it was a nice form and nicely done.

  • Actually, I'm really glad it wasn't at full speed. I'm trying to learn and am having difficulty finding slow videos that I can practice with.

  • that was a nice form and long too. I was just curious do you ever hit anything with them. i do nunchaku and strike my bad and I was gonna get some of those I just dont know if you could do that as easily.

  • this vid kind of dissapointing

  • so true, truely disapointing.....

  • Nice ^^ What style of Kung Fu do you take?

  • Hey This is my kungfu brother james he does 7 star preying mantis they ar in louisiana. His Sifu teacher name is sifu Perry he very good. They are with the kungfu exchange in texas he learned from Gm raymond fogg who also taught David lee roth in Van Halen and Cynthia rothrock. Were both are sihing brothers James is truly with Sifu Perry this is real shaolin Kungfu.we do all the 18 weapons

  • Shodan1989 he does Wah Lum 7 star preying Mantis. His teacher is Sifu Perry their in Louisianna. They're Grandmaster is GM Raymond Fogg in Texas, who is the disciple of GM Pan chui the 33 gen which open the 1st shaolin temple in america in orlando Fl.They also teaches all 18weapons & teach tradition shaolin Kungfu.

  • All i can say is great form work dude! Bet it took ages to get that down and it looks great. Yeah so the stances may not have been perfect but from what ive just sen i bet you could make it abit tidier no problem.

  • Lots of armchair psuedo masters making negative comments here. "Lose the pants?" What an idiot!!..That was an excellant demonstration of the weapon. I like the floor stops.

  • Yap, a stable demonstration, very good for beginners to watch.

But, still, this guy would make progress if he practice further.

  • Hey Taiwan16888 this guy is really good he very fast and flexible & really nows his stuff.I use 2 train with him when they would come down to rochester. He only moved at this pace so you can see his movements because at full speed u woulldnt be able to c anything. He is Sifu Perry top student Sifu Perry learned from Sifu fogg at the kung exchange 7 * mantis. He my younger kungfu brother he's very advanced. He an expert with all 18 weapons and hand forms.this is an advance form not a beginners set.

  • Yeah~ I can see that this guy is good, no wonder he can switch to a faster mode.

    Thanks for the demo anyway.

  • Stances are ok, they could be better, but they are decent. I hate to say it sicne i mad a comment on another video of yours, Lose the pants. Unless you are going for a comedic look. The baggy pants make it tougher to show off good stances.

  • Yes, I would agree that the postures in this video are quite poor : (

  • If the form or kuen is to be performed slowly you should really care about your stances, the ones in this video are completly up, like if he was doing the form standing.

  • something

  • Comment removed

  • it's good but what's that roaring sound like a dog or somthing?

  • Very well done form. Even when you perform it slow, it shows the power.

  • This video was created to document the form for reference and teaching purposes and isn't being performed at full speed.

    Nice excuse. Haha.

  • seiously, this video taught me how to not hurt myself when i do this form...

it was a dvd i bought a few years back

  • +1 Tsunami.

  • Hmm, never thought of holding two of the staff segments to use the weapon as a pair of sticks. :P

How many times do you normally hit yourself in the head before you get a good grasp of the weapon, its recoil effects, and also its effective range?

  • Not very much... The recoil is important to learn, you use your body to slow or stop the weapon. Not your head though :p

I've been using these things for about 2-3 months, and only hit myself in the head once because I wasn't being careful. As long as you don't play around and have common sense, then you won't get hit too hard :p

It's effective range is incredibly long. It adds 9 feet in any direction when swung. That's about 40 cubic feet. That's probably the farthest of any melee weapon. XD

  • hey, not bad for a white guy

  • kung fu Has No Race Requirements

  • @AphelionDustwake

No! it requires you to be human race

  • @AphelionDustwake kung fu has skill requirements. and basics requirements.

this man is not accurate in his movements. and he is slow. and his stances are poor. and he lacks basic control of weapons. he should work his basics, then go on to practicing an easier weapon first.

  • @wooshoo

The description explains that it is for reference only and not at full speed.

  • u got master the 3secstaff but u dont FIGHT with it imagene you opponent

  • i got one hard to use but fun

  • I've used one before I'd say I'm pretty good an watching this video has given me some ideas thanks Heibie

  • is the three section staff a weapon that can be self taught? if so I might consider getting one.

  • it can be self taught with a lot of practice...but at first its scary as hell lol

  • Surely. I taught myself how to use it. :o GO AT IT! :)

  • i taught myself, but i had eight years of experience with nunchaku, six years of experience with a bo staff, and one year with a san-setsu-kon nunchaku (basically a nunchaku with three bars, each bar about a foot long). i tried to simultaneously use a broadsword and a three-section staff, in an attempt to build on the idea of a broadsword and a chainwhip.

I hit myself in the balls at full speed.

    It fucking hurt :(

  • LOL yeah i taught myself how to use a chainwhip a broad sword a straight sword 3 sections staff and nunchaku, i learned a lot of Bo-staff from my teacher, tho, and i can say, if i hadnt had my cup in while i was practicing whip or 3sections staff, i would hav hurt myself real bad, cuz i did smack myself there with a chainwhip like 3 times and smacked myself in the head with a 3 section staff and yeah it hurts.

  • Ha, you have a teacher!!! i don't... so I got the taste of more things hitting me in the face! Are you pretty good? I make weird weapons.. and kick my own ass with them. :( but oh well, it is fun. :o

  • san-setsu-kon nunchaku? interesting. Would you mind showing us? I have one that I made... but I can't use it!!! You have interesting ideas. I should give them a go, maybe. :) Thanks a bunch!

  • So many gwai loh's trying to copy Asian martial arts, just because theirs suck ass. It's sad.

  • Some Gwai Loh practice because they respect Asian martial arts. Don't be so racist.

  • @LaWMaKeRzX shut the hell up, cant believe someone who is supposed to be humble and tolerant can be racist like u, u dont deserve to live, we dont live in a racist world anymore, so get the fuck out

  • reminds me of that last fight scene in Fearless...at least i THINK its called Fearless...3 section staff versus katana i believe...pretty cool stuff :D

  • .

    .

    .

    .

    fight someone

    .

    .

    .

  • SUSSSSHH! Hes concentrating!!

  • Good. Now You need to work on speed and nerviness!

  • maybe u should read the info first

  • You're right. I've just read that. I'm sorry... :-)

  • It looks like are just starting with the 3 section staff, keep practicing that same routine and try to speed it up to a point that looks a little impressive.

  • The more I watch this video the more it pisses me off. The form is called GROUND ROLLING three section, and there's a reason.

Tell you Sifu he doesn't know the rest of the form.

  • Pretty harsh and critical comments. The aim of of Kung Fu should be to live a longer, healthier, happier life. I have seem many sets done different ways. Some because of the physical limitations of the practicioner. Some were cut short due to time. Whatever the reason, the important thing is to get the essence of the set and use good technique. Based on that the set looks fine. Definately can be done better, but what set couldn't be improved upon. Have fun. This is a great weapon.

  • S13...u r a douch bag...period.

  • Yet again a WL form done wrong. It's not your fault though, i'm sure you were taught that way. But I assure you, there's a bunch of things missing/incorrect about it.

  • nice one

  • nice form

    5 stars

  • ya gotta watch out for a 3 section staff, i have mine, but my mom is soooooooo afraid of me hitting myself into a coma that she wont let me use free-hand training untill my master tought me how to use it correctly

  • i kno this form! whoo hoo!

  • VERY GOOD :54 awsome i hit myself in the head soo many times doing that

  • Sweet moves man.

  • I plan on buying a Wushu 3-Section Staff, I'll probably be moving slower than that.

So I don't wack myself across the head. LOL

  • read the damn description of the video before you make yourself look like fools in your comments -.-

  • hmm, i wonder if someone will teach me? if u know any masters in california, please reply (dont DIRECTLY reply, such as, clicking the "Reply" button)

  • kll im gettin a bo staff for christmas and wen u pull it apart it turns int a 3 sctional staff

  • thats cool, my nunchaku connect to form escrima sticks (known as kali stick to some people)

watch out lol after a lil while the release loosens up and you get a section to the head really quick lol

  • you gotta reeeaaaally watch out for that... the first time you try a 3 section staff, its pretty hard... ive only had mine for 2 days but im getting used to it very quickly.

remember with them, if you hit something with the middle piece, the end will probably hit something as well... like a whip. Hit yourself with the middle, and I gaurantee that you're going to hit yourself with the end as well. (maybe spelled gaurantee wrong)

  • billy kane's weapon! do you know its name?

  • READ "About this video" criticism isn't necisary.

Unless its aimed at my spelling...

  • Good movements but slow...

  • veramente orrendo!

  • If you're going to leave a negative comment at least have the BALLS TO DO IT IN ENGLISH! Where's you're vid? Show me how its done.

  • His pants look comfortable...

  • haha i was thinking thing

  • dude, read the description before you comment.

  • Great job! Nice form, has application. Put a new one up, I bet you are really great at it now.

  • *Applauds* nice finishing pose. Just a little advise, and i dont think it's major but try to relax your shoulders. I do tai chi and kung fu and found out that if you relax your shoulders, it really looks a lot cleaner. Again, it was very small and not really noticable. Good job, again, man.

  • Very good advice, thank you.

  • very clean...im gonna have to borrow some of your moves. check out my videos and let me know what you think!

  • Good work! Keep it up.

  • kungfu forms are not all about agretion it is about the mind and the soul working with your body

  • Excellentay!

  • why dont you try getting used to attaching weights or making a heavier tri staff for your forms? it would seriously tear up your arms and you get better when you switch back.

  • No it's a bow and arrow stance.

  • i just noticed this: at 00:58 ,please tell me thats not a horse stand :(

  • If you can go fast with that kind of technique, then you have serious skill.

  • No, if you can do it SLOW, you have skill. Skill is not always about speed. By practicing at a slow pace doing it at a fast pace becomes easier. (the moves are set in the 'memory of your body')

  • Excellent form with a nice spread of techniques, and doing it is great fun. Many thanks for sharing this widely to those who are not able to be part of the wah lum tradition "proper".

  • slow for demo dude.. easy to get speed with it where it hurts like hell to catch..

  • damn i need a permit to get one of those here

  • wow rly? odd.

  • 3 section staff pft* its real name is the super nunchuk

  • not really dude.. three sections not 2.

  • That was great, dude. Thanks for going slow enough for me to see what was going on. It was easy to learn from.

  • he's doing this slow for demonstration purposes.he can probably go much faster. I'm kind of curious to know what style this is. I got a 3 section staff as a present and wanted to know what I should train in to use the weapon properly.I'm aware that it's an advanced weapon and I wont just start out using it. Also I really havent had any formal training in any martial art but I want to learn.

  • The 3 section staff has its foundation in staff movements. I recomend learning the movements (expecially flowering and over the head & behind the back movements) with the staff first. It will help you devlop a solid foundation in your techequie and its defenatly less painfull. (Please excuse my spelling errors)

  • practice more then make another vid

  • he doesn't need practice

  • ano...

any body have videos of the three section staff in action during performance?

this year, im going to do it at berkley for nationals.... i just want to see what im up against....

  • *jaw drops*

what kind of sorry .... ill just stop here...

  • lol are you stupid? he's demoing for ppl to learn.

  • wow, very nice control, and a beautiful drop stance near the end of the form! 5 stars!!

  • this guy is very impressive, is he wing chun kuen?

  • Good Form.

  • I love it. This is going to be my study guide from now on. lol

  • Looks like a more traditional style form, not the Wushu I keep seeing. From what family does it come?

Pretty decent control, and clear enough to see what is being done.

  • Very well done, hit the marks very clean.

About hitting the ground, some people use it as the way people use it in hand forms.

People punch there hands and kicks sometimes to simulate contact, and it keeps your body aware to what your mind is doing, or vise versa (depending on what kinda person you are :P ) Great job!

  • I'm not a martial artist or anything, but I did find this video very interesting and informative. Most of the time people use the three section staff too fast for me to follow, so it was intriguing to see each movement clearly like that. Great demonstration.

  • Hi, I put these up for my cousin, but I brought up your question. I can't remember the exact reasons he gave (they were detailed) but he basically said the purpose for the staff hitting the ground the way it does is for control purposes and that you try to strike at certain angles to reduce the chances of the staff bouncing back.

  • Actually, I do have one thing that has raised my curiosity. What exactly is the purpose of the tip of the staff hitting the ground? Is that a method of re-establishing control, establishing a distance of some sort, or does it preform some function in battle? Or is it something I've totally missed?

  • both, u use it to strike down the opponent and u gain control if ur tip isout of balance but he wasnt out of balance at the time

  • Awesome control on that, and seriously informative too. I can do just about anything that was shown here, but just from watching this once I've begun to understand how to gain better control during my routine. Thanks for posting this. 5 stars and favorited
