  • your a fucking idiot mate, of course you would have to take the damn gun skill to be able to use a gun, gurps is the most realistic roleplaying sytem around, if you had never handled, or maintaned a gun before, your bassically saying that you should beable to pick it up and become an expert marksmen. once again your an idiot

  • Alright, GURPS books (and the system itself) might not be the most "new player" friendly things out there. I'll give you that. But the idea of GURPS is that you, as a GM, should choose and pick what you want to include in your campaign (such as advantages, disadvantages etc.)

GURPS is not a complete setting (such as D&D), it's a toolbox for you to use to create your own campaign and setting.

  • You'll remember the advantage name, not necessarily whether it was Exotic, Supernatural, etc. So you look for it alphabetically.

Also, you're complaining about skills? What RPGs did you play before that didn't have stats and skills?

And the trait list is not in the table of contents...? Odd.

  • You're WRONG. GURPS 4th edition is the best RPG around.

    - The Klingon Music Lover

  • page 5...

trait list in bold letters with page number 297

  • i turned the cartoon Thundar the Barbarian into a gurps world , every thing i needed was in the basic book from magic to guns . gurps isnt a bad game systen once you get used to the basic rules . just take what you want from it used that to creat your own game world and another thing thats good about gurps is theres no end to what you can do with it . creativity is the key to playing gurps .

  • You don't get it do you? There is not "Extraterrestrials" category of Advantages, it is Exotic. Each category of Advantages is fully explained at page 32. Read it, you'll understand. Sorry, but your review seem biased based on your expectations and your limited experience of rpg products. Wasted my time here.

  • WOW! I am utterly amazed. This video contains more huffs, groans and sighs than actual words. The most common word used is 'nitpicky'.

You biggest complaint is that your reading is somehow interrupted.

I dont want this to sound rude. But you suffer from an Obsessive Compulsive Disorder and Attention Deficit Disorder. Lots of people have these problems, and a psychologist/psychiatrist can properly diagnose and provide treatment so you can better deal with the symptoms.

  • Sorry but are you suggesting that every GURPS character with Ambidexterity and Quick Draw can fire a gun excellently?! What games have you been playing sir?!

  • @kleedrac Not to mention that in Deadlands classic those are all separate skills as well... Gun skill, Quick Draw... I think Ambidexterity is an Advantage. You also need skill in the right type of gun.

That doesn't bother me but it's not an 'issue' that's peculiar to GURPS.

  • do you work for Layout magazine?

  • do you work for Layout magazine?

  • My problems with GURPS has always been about its execution. I despised how long it took to create characters, but more than that I hated the combat resolution system. I don't know what they've improved (heh) in 4th, but a combat encounter could take a long time to resolve. I tend to judge games by how much of the rules I either ignore or forget, and I ignored plenty out of GURPS.

  • what are you whining about GURPS for? It's only a RPG.... You're a retard. this is a joke. Also, your points.. are... stupid.

  • This was a joke review right? Please tell me he is kidding.

  • MASSIVE FAIL.

You can't read the table of contents or index, and you don't understand the system. And when I say don't understand the system, I don't mean the mechanics, but the point of the various sub-systems. Non-random character creation means point buy creation. Skills are good.

    Play something simpler then, please.

  • hmmm... the Trait List is in my book contents section of my copy.

I has a love/hate relationship with the 3rd edition but I really like the 4th. Is much clearer and cleaner.

  • I liked the 3rd edition revised book alot. If your a good roleplayer its not that hard to have a character concept. Download GURPS lite your not giving your players much credit.

  • The advantages are in ALPHABETICAL ORDER.

Too bad this guy a). doesnt know how the system work and b.) didnt bother reading the book through and through.

The whole beauty of the game is to see how good you are at skills rather than working off core stats.

Played GURPS for 15+ years and this guy doesnt have a CLUE what he is talking about.

Learn system FIRST go on about book SECOND.

  • I've played out a whole campaign, and wow. I've never seen that TRAIT LISTS there...... That could have saved me so much flipping back and forth.

  • That last post was a reply to cheapy2006 - not chromemagnus.

  • you would think after buying the book you would have read it through and through

  • Most of the GURPS character book is quite dry. You wouldn't want to read it cover to cover.

  • I don't know I enjoy looking through the book

  • I just got the pdfs for free fuck bying it

  • you fat spoilt prick!! judging by the size of your bedroom and your face you're not short of space, money, time, or food.

why not engage with the real world and put some of your evident energy into righting some of the iniquities in reality, rather than gassing on about some silly game you don't like the rules of?

  • I think hippies should be banned from this site; that way they can expend all that time and effort they put in posting pointless comments on youtube into doing something noble like cutting off their own extrematies to feed all those starving afgans they keep moaning about

  • You don't seem like someone interested in this type of thing, so why bother even watching this

  • You sad twat. You've sat watching a vid about something you have no interest in just to slate the vid maker. I think you are the one that needs to get a life. You need to get out more if this is the best thing you can think of expending your energy upon. What a tit.

  • He's a U2 fan. That says it all. Instead of trying to engage people in doing something good for those in need, he is going around alienating people by being a self righteous prick. I'm quite liberal but after listening to cheapy2006, the next time I see a tramp I'm going to kick him in the face.

  • AND, final, the most apparent reason the Character develompent is located in the back is because after a few character creations you dont need it every time (considering you are able to remember stuff you have read a few times), thus making it easiest to open the first pages right onto stats followed by Adv, disadv, and final skills. all you require to make your character.

  • "Continued": If you took your time reading the Contents section on page 3 in the Basic set book you would have seen that the "trait section" (which you stated did not exist) is located on page 4 and it looks liek this: "Trait list--Page 297".

  • Ive watched your two parts of your video here. Gurps kick ass when it comes to character creation because you can pick whatever you want, okay it takes time but thats also a part of the fun. And your friends will learn and remember all the stuff until next time anyways.

And that you got to raise your DX score, pick Fast draw and then the gun skill seems pretty logical to me really, dont quite understand why you are so upset about that.

  • well after seeing this, im happy i got the 3rd edition revised book.

  • WoW, nerd rage

  • Thanks for the info on the Traits List section. I was soo confused in the Character Creation section that I never found that back part yet. :(

  • Observation: Previous editions of GURPS DID separate it's traits into categories in separage sections of the book: paranormal from mundane, Psychic from Racial etc. This PROVED to be more trouble than it was worth when an advantage could be placed in more than one category. Page flipping and index checking eats customer good will.

The are in alphabetical order, identified by those little icons next to them for type.

  • I'd agree that most of your points are valid, but I don't find a slightly gawky layout to be that much trouble.

  • There are these nice little symbols in there to tell you which advantages are 'supernatural' or not. Also, GURPS tends to assume that their players will read the book in detail. Again, if all this is really that much of a headache - then buy some version of the GCA. (The GURPS Character assistant) ...on Cd-Rom.

    - The Klingon GURPS GM

  • Well I hope you got it figured it all out, i am trying to start a D&D 3.5 ( i dearly adore the version) and it took me weeks for prep work to just flesh out the world, And please feel free to keep ranting it helps

  • OK, here's my beef with GURPS, now it's been a very long time, about 10 years. But it was a system, a system of selling you books. It was the readers digest of rpg. There was sooo many modules that to try and run a cam(pain) you had to figure out your universe/gametype before even getting into the fun stuff. Our group found it easier to stick to the main staples: AD&D, Shadowrun, Cthulhu, and later Champions.

  • To be honest, I'm very much inclined to agree with you. Cheers for the comments mate!

  • GURPS 4th edition doesn't have a ton of modules though.

You'll manage just fine for most modern or realistic campaigns with just the two core books

For Fantasy you'd add Magic (More Spells)

For settings with Superpowered individuals (Spiderman, Ghostrider...), GURPS Powers be much helpful

The rest usually either add nice detail, or provide helpful tips to Game Masters

GURPS Martial Arts adds things such as new combat rules, while GURPS Fantasy is filled with tips for creating fantasy Worlds

  • so many modules? GURPS has had very few adventures published.

  • That may be because Steve Jackson Games has decided that making Adventurers is not profitable for a "Global Universal Roleplaying Game".

GURPS is not a setting, it is a toolkit for creating settings. Doing an "Global Universal Adventure" which would work for any setting won't much work, so instead they create Toolkit books telling GMs how to write up their own adventures, and how to make them interesting. GURPS Worldkit books are good and are bought by some people for use with other settings.

  • A few GURPS Books:

GURPS Powers (+ 2 Power-Up PDFs), GURPS Fantasy, GURPS Magic, GURPS Thaumatology, GURPS Dragons, GURPS Supers, GURPS High Tech (+ Pulp Guns 1 & 2), GURPS Space, GURPS Spaceships, GURPS Ultra Tech, GURPS Biotech, GURPS Mysteries, GURPS Martial Arts

    GURPS Dungeon Fantasy (4 PDFs)

    GURPS Action (PDF)

GURPS Creature of the Night (4 PDFs)

    And a handful of other...

    On the the Horizon...

    GURPS Horror & GURPS Conspiracies

We've got plenty of books ;)

  • Lmao! Many thanks mate, I'll bear those well in mind ;)

I seem to have started something here with this rant.

  • I didnt think having premade adventures was a big issue. In matter of fact the homemade adventures were alot better then the predesign adventures. And gave the Gm. more fun engineering his own game. On 3rd edition gurps, it only took me only 30 minutes to create a 100 pt. character. We saved the old character sheets and used them in made up adventures with a twist. I also think that the quik random character rules made it easy to throw in some filler material if needed.

  • That is because it is a "Generic Universal Roll Playing SYSTEM" not a Genre with adventure seeds.

  • @Wizartar As if AD&D, Cthulhu, WOD and most other mainstream games didn't have shedloads of supplements and whatnot. GURPS really doesn't stand apart from that crowd in having books... that aren't really necessary to play the game.

  • buy savage worlds and deadlands reloaded, problem solved...

  • Lol. Indeed! I had no idea about Deadlands Reloaded until I'd already bought the Gurps system ;)

So yes, I might well do that...

  • Okay! My Bashful Apology...

Yes, I have no idea how I missed that entry on the Contents. Usually I go through it, but no excuse.

However! If you're trying to create a character quickly and easily as a player, you don't want to resort to the Index. You simply want to follow along a progression of pages that takes you through it step by step.

The Traits List should be the first thing they see in the Advantage section. Full stop!

So okay, better than first said but still not good. That is all!

  • Did you look at GURPS Lite (free Download)?

As the GM you should have the setting and know what type of Characters you will need to run it. Those are the choices your group gets to choose from.
