I love this cheesy B-movie, its just such a good flick, and if you look at the remake, you'll see that it sucks. Visual effects take over the plot of good movies.

According to the DVD commentery from director Joe Dante and producer John Davis, they had a little more planned for that two-legged whatever it-was. Dante/Davis wanted it to either show up again ,and end up getting run over by the jeep. Or, cooler yet, a kaiju-sized version of the bugger was intended to show up in flick's end, and smash up Santa Monica Peir. But thanks to the film's tight budget neither of these idears saw the light of day.

What b-movies lack in budget and acting quality, they make up for through humour and all sorts of exaggeration that a-films shun. But the film must remain reflexive and aware of its plot holes and inconsistencies, and manage them cleverly so as to amuse the audience. This film could have been a great parody, but it is devoid of humour.
