Great cover, dude! I must say that I like the unique setup of your toms...reverse! If you gave me to play your set, I would have gotten confused with the rolls! From Singapore. :)
and everyone needs to shut up who cares if he dropped the stick it's not like your perfect he's amazing at the drums i've seen him in concerts so learn things before you say it dumb losers.
1:18 adolf hitler laughs at himself lol no im just kidding your very good when i get my drumset im gonna learn from watching your videos your the only one that doesnt sound like a dying cat when their playing
great cover dude! glad you left the mistakes in there, shows that not everyone is perfect, but you know how to recover from mistakes. i like that. check out my cover if you get a chance :) thanks
I think the fact that he dropped the stick, recovered, left it in and laughed about it is pretty cool. It shows the guy has a sense of humor and is not worried about being just another YouTube ratings/views whore.
you took too many unnecessary freedoms with amateur licks. if you're gonna cover a master, listen more intently and do it right. your mirror is killing me and your gratuitous stick spins are like a 5th grade band student. other than that, i like your porn stache.
Apparently no one knows that normal conventions for setting up a drum set can be changed... You people do know that some left-handed drummers play with their whole set reversed, right? Anyways, good job man. You handled that fill pretty well, I'm still workin on it
@stevefoxthebox That lick is the highlight for the song. Even though I've taken the time to fully notate this song and practice that particular fill repeatedly, I still don't feel like it sits quite in the pocket. Steve Smith is an awesome drummer. Even back then he let you know that just because he was in a pop band, he still had way serious chops.
@vidassoc He wasn't right about anything, he didn't even believe in evolution when he died. Ever heard of Entropy? Educate yourself. That one word disproves everything about evolution.

Very nice. I like how you show that you can recover from mistakes and how you changed some things to make it your own. Great song by Journey. Keep up the good work!
hey hi ken, your video was very helpful for me, yesterday i recorded mi video of this song, so if you have time check it out and tell what do you think about it, thanks and greets from mexico
I explain the fills a couple of comments earlier. I could send you a pdf of the notation for the fills if you would like. I have not taken the time to transcribe the whole song. Sorry.
My twirling/spinning/flipping skills need plenty more work. I think I'm actually better at recovering a dropped stick than I am at the actual twirl. Consequently, I will NOT play a gig if I don't have my handy stick holder attached to my tripod. Thanks for watching.
Steve Smith is borrowing an old Steve Gadd lick, (which I personally think he got from John Bonham) and what you are hearing is the use of several variations of it to culminate in the signature fill at 2:41 which is a grouping of 4 of these in a row. It is played RH-LH-RH-RF (snare, tom, floor tom, bass). It looks really difficult in print, but is actually pretty easy to play and should be in every drummer's tool bag. I could send you a pdf if you'd like.
I don't know the song very well, but I could see from your Everlong cover that you're a great drummer! Some people suffer from jealousy and are sad enough to sit there and pick faults. (It's better to find a fault in yourself rather than a million in others)
Thanks for the props! I force myself into doing (20) 1 minute drills as a warm up BEFORE I start trying to learn new licks or new music. I hate doing drills, but I play SO much better after I've done them. If I were to pick out 1 drill, it would be left foot exercises. My playing is based on my feet. If my feet are doing well, my hands follow. If my left foot is strong and confident, everything else tends to fall into place. Hope this helps.
Thanks! I spent alot of time tuning it for this recording. I really like the Evans reverse dot heads for rock. I keep toying with the idea of getting a deeper snare (this is a 5.5 x 14) because I'd like a little more ass out of it, but alot of deeper snares start to sound "tubby" and lose the high end crack. (ass, crack....it must be getting late...)
haha, asscrack. yea it must be late ! This whole cover is EXACTLY like the real song. Great job. Ive watched a ton of covers of this here on youtube, and the parts at 2:14 and 2:43 people never get right. not even me. great job again sir!

Hey Ken.
Very nice job on the song. You are the only one I have found that took the time to produce a quality video.
Could you share with me specifically what you are doing at 1:11, 1:44, 1:59, 2:14, 2:41 and 3:57. The fill you do at 2:41 I'm most interested in.
I would really appreciate your assistance with this.
Thanks.
