It is so rare to hear three musicians coming together with such effortless artistry! For me, the performance is brilliant from every point of view. I wore the old LP out years ago (I believe it was first released in 1965) and replaced it with the CD. The late British actor, Sir Peter Ustinov, once said this recording was one of two or three that he would like to have with him on a desert island because he never tired of listening to it. Thanks for posting this wonderful work.
I heard the voice director at my school sing this song and this performance is SOOOOO much better. She always sings everything like she's trying to awaken the dead, heavy and loud. This is so tender and enjoyable.
float like a butterfly, sting like a bee, Ameling is the essential voice for this song, almost a humble concoction, a utopian sense of balance, an excitement of art that bears repeating, and one of the greatest song moments ever recorded...etc
My young friend, this singer is from the Netherlands which shares its entire eastern border with Germany, & whose language is often referred to as "High German because it is very closely related to German. This singer is an excellent lieder singer who is fluent in German. If her pronunciation sounds odd it's probably because it's being sung not spoken.
@eyesk8er Sung German is actually almost identical to spoken German. The biggest difference is the placement of consonants, especially 'r.' The are placed more forward in the mouth, and 'r' is usually pronounced with the tip of the tongue rather than the back.
@tcradical No she isn't. It is pretty good but not exactly right. 'Je' should never be pronounced with the 'j' as in 'gin' but rather like the 'y' in 'yoyo.' No exceptions. You should be more careful before giving incorrect advice.
@SchokoladeTorten Are you drunk? or better said, were you drunk while you replied my comment? You are the one that needs to know what people are talking about before you reply or elaborate any comment on what the other person is saying. For you to see that you know soo much, I never spoke of the pronunciation of any "Je", in fact nobody that has comented on this video has. I was answering the question that the person two or three comments above me had asked.
@SchokoladeTorten (finishing My Reply) Like I had said, I was answering the question asked by SopranoOfTheNight about the umlaut. Now, who should be more careful before giving Incorrect Advice? Thank you very much!
You chose an excellent performance of this work, which surely is one of Schubert's greatest! Having performed this several times in my music school days, it was a trip down memory lane for me. Thanks for this contribution, and many of your other contributions, I might add!
I think listening to Elly Ameling recordings for so long is the reason I can't seem to enjoy any modern soprano singing without feeling like something is missing.
Composing something so light and happy at the end of your life is amazing. Thank you very much, civileso, for the wonderful posting, and thank you Schubert for thinking of us at your end......
The singer reassures the unhappy youth with a delightful lie, "love will come again like the Spring". Her brightness hides her lecturing, a powerful contrast if the message is false. The clarinet (unlke, say, an oboe) makes it more a dance than a love song. I thought Schwarzkopf was good until I heard this. Elly Ameling's clarity is perfect.
Her VOICE. PRISTINE! Don't you just love her BRIGHT tone. NOT HEAVY. SO many soprano's have that KERMIT FROG THING Going On...So covered it sounds like they are singing with MARBLES in their mouth. But this..is BRILLIANT PERFECTION.!
I agree, but then she's singing this is a major, a semitone down, which makes it so much easier to make a light and pleasant tone. Don't know why she chose to do this; her voice is light enough as it is.
Main thing is though that this is wonderful to listen to:)
I don't think the fermata on the final Bb is out of place at such a lighthearted moment. She conveys the feeling of a light, flung-open heart perfectly.
Voice and clarinet do a nice echo effect in the phrases "Je weiter meine Stimme dringt, / Je heller sie mir wiederklingt," (The further my voice travels / the clearer it returns to me.) A showpiece, as the wiki comments explain, and lovely;
Dear Kaknostava,is that a negative-- Or just the "flair" of a fabulous soprano? !! If a voice such as this can't SHOW off with an extra fermata on a simple B flat~ THEN peacocks should never open their plummage. What a waste that would be.
Actually, the vocal part and piano are written in key. The clarinet part looks like it's transposed by a whole tone. Is that an instrumental convention?
The reason is that this is a period instruments performance. Hammerklavier and a romantic clarinet based on the instrumnt from schubert's time. That why the pitch is "flat".
Yeah I totally agree - I was singing along because i have a clarinetist friend who might do it with me and was astounded to have sung a B flat. I went to my piano and found it was actually an A - in fact the whole thing has been transposed down a minor 2nd. Incidentally, I have NO problem with that - some 90% of Schubert's songs are available in transposition for high, medium or low voice, so why not this one? Brilliant piece, perfectly sung!
Elly Ameling is just amazing...and this piece.I didn't know it but was made aware of it by my friend a clarinet player... maybe we'll try to playy/sing it together sometime..
@civileso I agree with you wonderful piece even if I don't like so much the light sound of the clarinet....but it's very well played as concerns musicality :)
Did anyone hear the key is not bB major? It is A major!!!!

Beautiful recording - Elly's use of tonal "color", sensitive phrasing and seamless intervalic connections make this performance exceptional

Adding the score is a thoughtful extra. Thank you for that.
I always enjoy Ameling and this work is a wonderful showcase
of her talents and Schubert's genius at lieder.

I love the song, but this singer clearly doesn't know how to handle an umlaut. "Fruhling" should not be pronounced "frooling."

I meant the sounding pitch. She's definitely not singing Bflats at the top. I know Elly had a pretty easy upper register, but those are As...
MarcionusNovus 4 years ago
And yeah, the clarinet is a transposing instrument, so the parts are written in a different key from the one actually being used.
