  • Blech latin :P i took that language and hated every minute of it

  • A great way to teach the Imperative.

  • a new NCR mission agenst the legion for fallout new vegas called.

    "ROMANS GO HOME"

  • Thumbs up if you understand all of the lessons

  • I know Latin. So this is that much more fucking funny.

  • This Scene became more funny after I learned Latin

  • Toy!

  • "Romani iti domum" or latin for "Romans go home" as ""Egg of a fish is roe Man, but I eta p-nut butter coz I leica it" DOH!, Does Marge are -ine taste as good as a rose does, is it on or off, fiery, feisty and flighty flowers?"" Homer Simpleton. Quote, unquote my quota as these status quo's lost count. You goo-ta watch out for grammar's nasties, Nazi's and Nazgul's flying over your heads. liv & luv =p-eat:!

  • @PEATANTICS Dear God! What on earth does your comment mean?! I've read it three times and I'm still scratching my head at this.

  • @reasonablenamehere Fish eggs = roe which is a homonym of row as in row the boat or hoe the row hence roe man or row man sounds like ROMAN up shoot creek without a paddle. Eta is a brand of peanut butter, p and pea are also homonyms. leica is a brand of camera with a homonym of "Like a" DOH sounds like Dough as in Money or in Bread before being baked. Marge is Homers wife and is in Margerine which is made from seeds of flowers but not rose flowers usually Canola or Sunflower

  • @reasonablenamehere Whoa, you're not kidding. Incomprehensible! I want some of those drugs.

  • too bad domum isn't the locative lol

  • @wordlife94 when the verb expresses "movement" the place of destination is domum! You don't use locative here! Go back to your books!!!

  • @ghostdog7575 I know that. But he said domum was the locative, which it isn't

  • TRUE TO CAESER!

  • I wish English were taught like this.

"If it's not done by sunrise, I'll cut your balls off".

I bet kids today wouldn't talk all ignorant n shiet if dey larned dem sum engrish....

  • Those latin gangs are terrible, always forcing people to conjugate and decline.

  • I just watched this for the first time since starting Latin; it's about ten times as funny as it was before. ohh, the cases…Akkusative can fuck off.

  • Now, dont do it again

  • i love this scene cos i do German which doesn't even have as many cases as Latin and it still pisses me off.

I totally agree with the statement that cases and gendered nouns are just a massive FU to anyone trying to learn the language.

"I don't care about imaginary gay moon sex organs!"

  • Reminds me of latin class

  • Domum is no locative. Haha ^^

  • @MrWaschmeinesocken Yes it is.

  • The 24 dislikes were from Caesar's Legion of New Vegas.

  • it's just like we were taught Latin

  • Some people on here know Latin. I'm laughing out of assumption of the Latin sentence structure.

  • I've seen this movie before but I never understood it until now... I started taking a 1st yr Latin course this September. Gah.

  • @shuikyou Same for me! This is so much funnier now I understand what they're talking about xD

  • romanes eunt domus = romans go to the house of ?

  • Latin's probably easier now. I'm taking it, and they've scrapped the locative so nouns only have 6 cases now.

  • 24 people never look on the bright side of life

  • My dad as played by John Cleese

Me as played by Graham Chapman

  • "if its not done by sunrise, i'll cut your balls off"

    now THAT makes my day

  • I found this on a wall in a game called fallout new Vegas at a Roman camp

  • I have not taken Latin in school, but speaking german helps, too =)

  • "Now don't do it again!"

    That made my day.

  • HOLYSHIT this is so funny if you've ever taken latin before! lol

  • ive been to latin mass and this is gut busting funny. i cant go anymore cuz i laugh out loud.

  • GRAMMAR POLICE!!!

  • like this if you found this in fallout

  • mrs rabin taught me latin in 1972- i hated it- only people who learned latin at school could fully appreciate this scene. and this is how latin was taught- repition- write it out 100 times. etc.

  • Good stuff. Although wouldn't Greek have been the first language in this region at the time?

  • My high school Latin teacher would show this clip in class. She only wishes she could pull a sword on us thought :(

  • Tremendously funny. I took 3 years of Latin in High School over 40 years ago, and every time I saw this part of the movie I had to laugh because it reminded me of my own experience in my Latin classes, although the teachers did not have to resort to the sword.

  • when you have in fallout crazy ödland it stands by a building by the legion, funny thing

  • Romani ite domum.

  • This centurion reminds every schoolboy who took latin of their teacher. I was never threatened with a sword for dangling a preposition though.

  • XXIV homines comoediam oderunt.

  • I think this should be shown in ALL Latin classes...

  • My latin class went a bit like this

  • Fallout brought me here

  • Lol, theres an Easter egg in fallout NV where "Romanes eunt domus" is written on a legion wall

  • Simply brilliant !

    Hilarious^5

  • I thought Romans pronounced Caesar /ˈkaisar/

  • @Darkspysrival no, it's pronounced SEE-zur. "Kaiser" is the German verion of Caesar, and Tsar is the Russian version.

  • @pimasta314 incorrect, SEE-zur is the contemporary pronunciation, but in classical Latin it is spoken with a hard C. @darkspysrival is right.

  • @Emurlee Bearing in mind that classical latin isn't necessarily ancient latin.

  • I crack up every time watch this scene. I had to take Latin language from 11 to 13 and the teacher was the absolute spit of the Centurion here.

  • Those 24 people obviously haven't studied latin.

  • This always makes me think of my first teacher

  • Btw this is satire on British school teachers/nuns and their stupid students.

  • My Latin teacher showed us this clip to show how stupid we r at conjugation and declining and Latin composition. In fact any one who watches this and also take Latin should share this to their teacher cuz its that hilarious. :)

  • Fallout: New Vegas sent me here.

  • @walrusblub same as me!!!

  • No way he could have written all that with just one bucket of paint.

  • LOL grammar lesson

  • Domum is not the locative (which would be domi), but the accusative of place. However, 'Romani ite domum' is correct. 'Domus' and the names of cities and towns are the only times that accusative of place is used. The preposition ad (to) is not needed for these, but would be needed for the names of countries.

  • @CountertenorDelight What I think he meant is that because domus is one of the words which takes the locative, it doesn't need the preposition in the "accusative of place to which" construction. If you remember or look it back up, any word that does use the locative case doesn't need the preposition ad in such constructions. Eamus Romam.

  • this is latin revision is a nutshell

  • This reminds me of an swedish teacher i had in the first grade to the third grade, boy was she tough! :D

  • Grammer roman > Grammer nazi.

  • @kangtae grammAr

  • @kangtae grammAr nazi

  • @kangtae That should be "Grammar Roman > Grammar Nazi". :-P

  • @kangtae lol you spelled grammar wrong, adding to the irony

  • Romani ite domum...got it

  • Our Latin teacher had us watch this for a writing prompt. Hahaha

  • Location is the rabat at Monastir, Tunisia. I Went there on holiday, staff professed ignorance of film.

  • DID NO ONE SEE THE GIANT STONE PENIS AT THE BEGINNING? I MEAN COME ON!!!!!!

I LOVE FALLOUT: NEW VEGAS AND MONTY PYTHON BUT THERE IS A STONER BONER PENIS!!!!

  • @TheKitsunefire

You mean that "Bigus Dickus" ? ;-)

  • Latin declinations are a blast!

  • studying for my latin exam which is in 15 minutes. Quite a good pick me up :D...timeo latin :S

  • 24 people writing it as wrong

  • The school was better in the old days...

  • caught by a different patrol fuck his luck

  • I hate conjugating ._.

  • Literally three days ago I came back from a holiday in Tunisia, and I've been at the place this was filmed - the stairs are very distinctive but they're a bit simpler now. It's the Ribat in Monastir. There's a museum just behind the camera in the last shot (and up some stairs).

  • Triply funny if you've actually taken Latin.

  • @rbassilian Quadruply funny if you've ever been oppressed by the Romans.

  • @rbassilian

    indeed i have

  • @rbassilian yea...now we can laugh... but the trauma remains lol

  • right and dont do it again... *zooms out* *graffiti all over the building*

  • I'm pretty sure that Roman Guard is really my Latin teacher. And they would behead me.

  • ohhh i needed a good laugh

  • love it -- brings back all the memories from 9th grade...

  • I took Latin in high school just so i could fully understand this joke.

    And it's hilarious.

  • @NoLz2112 I think I'll do that

  • @NoLz2112 Including the cutting your balls off if you didn't write it a hundred times?

  • @NoLz2112 Latin is not a languge anymore.

  • @christianscott123

Dicis esse sic, sed non sic esse dico.

  • @Quintinohthree Suspendisse magna est interpretari huh?

  • @christianscott123

    Ignorant imbecile

  • @NoLz2112

This joke helped me fully understand Latin. =P

  • @NoLz2112 lol hipster faggot

  • @Southparker100000000 Excuse me while I go cry into my ironic shirt.

  • No it doesn't!

  • This is one of my favorite scene of Life of Brian. :D

  • This is my favorit part of Life of Brian. :D

  • Yes, some nouns have the locative case, but in my class we don't discuss about it. For domum, when used alone means "home" but if it is used with prepositions means "house" so 'ad domum' would mean 'toward the house'

  • omg! I have a Latin exam on Jan 31st.

  • And while I appreciate the intellect being represented here, this is after all a lot of geek bravado being exhibited over a joke about a dead language. What's the Latin translation for, "Can't you just enjoy the movie?" Is there even a Latin word for 'movie?' My Inbox awaits...

  • @hibob418 Maybe "Potesne (potestis 2°plur) tantum comoedia gaudere?" :)

  • when you see the sky, it is clear it was not filmed during the night, but in the daytime. Why couldn't they wait till the evening, I wonder?

  • @alinemerrow terry gilliam, probably just did it for the sake of it

  • @monteoner I've read an extract of Gilliam's book a few days ago - he's really upset about it, says it's Jones' fault :/

  • not gone by sun rise i will cut your balls off

    pritty funny

  • Now don't do it again!

  • This makes me want to learn Latin.

  • @ProudToBeNerdy it is as horrible as this scene makes it look, but it's not even funny

    don't go there

  • raw?

    sub please!

  • Locative is used with names of towns, small islands, and domus (house), humus (ground), and rus (fields). If a word has a locative it does not need a preposition to express place where, place to which, or place from which.

  • @Dinosaurs424 it's not the locative though, it's the accusative!

  • @lyndabynda I am aware that it is accusative, but I was just making the point that if a word has a locative, then it does not need a preposition when expressing motion towards. That is why the guard brings up the locative because the man first used the preposition "ad", which is not used with domum to express motion towards since domus has a locative.

  • @Dinosaurs424 ah ok so even though the locative isn't appropriate in this case, because domus HAS a locative then you don't use ad with the accusative. i'm so relieved to find out that john cleese is proficient in latin after all.

  • @lyndabynda Although Dinosaurs424 is right concerning the usage of prepositions, the mistake in this scene remains still. So I'm afraid your relief was a bit premature. :)

  • @constenebricus oh god...latin is like a nightmare i can't wake up from, i think i've got it but then...

i think he says in the scene that domus TAKES a locative and so it's domum instead of ad domum - right? he doesn't say it IS the locative

  • @lyndabynda "he doesn't say it IS the locative"

Oh but he does! Check the subtitles in the description.

P.S. Latin might be a nightmare, but a nightmare with a happy ending, believe you me.

  • @constenebricus so back to square 1- what was dinosaurs point then?

  • @lyndabynda Apparently he showed how locative and accusative can be mixed through lack of attention. Even though I don't quite agree with his statement that all words with locative dispense with prepositions. The usage of locative is considered archaic. The same with "accusative of direction" and "ablative of separation". But there doesn't seem to be a direct dependence. For instance, 'bellum' surely has a usable locative, but at the same time such expressions as "ex bello" are vastly used.

  • you need to use locative with some words, including domus. also humus and some city names. @constenebricus

  • Hmm... What does the locative case have to do with anything here? Accusativus directionis fits the context perfectly, as Brian suggests. A mistake on behalf of Monty Python's writers? A shame really, since the entire joke is based on grammar pedantry.

  • @constenebricus you need to use locative with some words, including domus. also humus and some city names.

  • @viridisbaca

Sure thing. But firstly the locative of 'domus' is 'domi' (just like the locative of 'humus' is 'humi') and secondly the locative case answers the question 'where?' as in 'in the house' or 'on the ground'. It introduces location, not direction or, as the centurion said, motion towards.

  • @constenebricus The centurion seems to think that the locative is the term for words that don't use a preposition in place constructions. He corrects ad domum to just domum and says that's the locative. A bit of a gaff, yeah.

  • @anarchangel23 Oh, I didn't catch the 'ad' part at first. I remember listening to the DVD commentaries on Life of Brian. They said in connection with this scene that John Cleese used to teach Latin at school. I imagine he forgot a thing or two about the language since then. It's still a good scene, but damn... it could be even better. Could be worse on the other hand.

  • @constenebricus Yeah, it's totally an old-school school teacher thing!

On the plus side, it's a good teaching exercise to show the video to Latin students to get them to spot the error!

  • bethesda really loves monty python... i mean first the holy hand grenades and now this!

  • ɯnɯop ǝʇı ıuɐɯoɹ

  • "right write it out 100 times before sunrise or ill cut your balls off" hahahahahaha how brilliant is that lmfao

  • Hahahahaha this scene is ABSOLUTELY BRILLIANT!!

  • A grammar nazi in Jerusalem? This is going to turn out bad...

  • @SonicX105 Yup, that explains the holy frag grenades.

  • Fallout:New Vegas Easter Egg,FUCK YEA.Epic Win.

  • Lol i found it randomly too :)

  • Hahahahaha! Sooo funny! The Praetorian is like my old Latin teacher!

  • The first time I saw this movie was in school. In Latin. Our Latin teacher was like "Dang! I should be using those methods!"

  • that is totally more than a hundred times

  • This is even better because i've seen the movie and played new vegas :D

  • Rooster Theeth :D

  • i think its Praetorian who chased him.

  • its funny how we gamers being tracked to go here about a movie we don't know and says this is in the game we have played while the people who watch this was like "WTF are this guys telling,Fallout New Vegas What?" something like that haha.

  • Haha, in Fallout: New Vegas, this is written in the Legion camp.

  • @bluzzers haha i saw that today as well

  • Classic scene / movie and slightly less painful than my latin class.

  • This is in Fallout new vegas!

  • @drknight48 thats why i just looked it up!

  • @theoldcape Me too! :D

  • @TheBannanaOfRazors Same here! :D

  • @drknight48 so awesome!

  • @drknight48 i saw this in cotton wood cove...

then killed all the legionaries there :D

  • @drknight48 yeah, this plus the holy hand grenade easter egg, bethesda must be a big monty python fan

  • @drknight48

Kudos to the programmers of that game. I am so getting it now.

There's supposedly a "Bridge of Death" in Fallout 2, but since I haven't played it I cannot say for certain.

  • @drknight48 thats why i looked this up

  • @drknight48 really are u serous?

  • @drknight48

Awesome. Reasone enough to ge tthe game. I am so buying it now.

  • @drknight48 no it's not. Sorry to disappoint. THIS IS ROOOOOME!

  • Probably the best scene.

  • "ITCHEY" instead of "ITE"...

    "DOWMAS" instead of "Domus"

the english spelling of latin is SO fun :-)

Could be fixed by simple italian lessons.
