Marge is Homers wife and is in Margerine which is made from seeds of flowers but not rose flowers usually Canola or Sunflower
mrs rabin taught me latin in 1972- i hated it- only people who learned latin at school could fully appreciate this scene. and this is how latin was taught- repition- write it out 100 times. etc.
Tremendously funny. I took 3 years of Latin in High School over 40 years ago, and every time I saw this part of the movie I had to laugh because it reminded me of my own experience in my Latin classes, although the teachers did not have to resort to the sword.
My Latin teacher showed us this clip to show how stupid we r at conjugation and declining and Latin composition. In fact any one who watches this and also take Latin should share this to their teacher cuz its that hilarious. :)
Domum is not the locative (which would be domi), but the accusative of place. However, 'Romani ite domum' is correct. 'Domus' and the names of cities and towns are the only times that accusative of place is used. The preposition ad (to) is not needed for these, but would be needed for the names of countries.
@CountertenorDelight What I think he meant is that because domus is one of the words which takes the locative, it doesn't need the preposition in the "accusative of place to which" construction. If you remember or look it back up, any word that does use the locative case doesn't need the preposition ad in such constructions. Eamus Romam.
Monsieur Cleese has clearly in his countenance what folk does call natural authority! This is why he plays in Monty Python all the key authority figures, which do make the life on our cosy little planet free prosperous and save like Adolf Hitler, the Pope, English officers, Reg (leader of the terrorist organisation People’s Front of Judea), Sir Lancelot the Brave, the right hand of Pontius Pilate, managers or police officers. I think the authority folk should take him for their role model!
Literally three days ago I came back from a holiday in Tunisia, and I've been at the place this was filmed - the stairs are very distinctive but they're a bit simpler now. It's the Ribat in Monastir. There's a museum just behind the camera in the last shot (and up some stairs).
Yes, some nouns have the locative case, but in my class we don't discuss about it. For domum, when used alone means "home" but if it is used with prepositions means "house" so 'ad domum' would mean 'toward the house'
And while I appreciate the intellect being represented here, this is after all a lot of geek bravado being exhibited over a joke about a dead language. What's the Latin translation for, "Can't you just enjoy the movie?" Is there even a Latin word for 'movie?' My Inbox awaits...
Locative is used with names of towns, small islands, and domus (house), humus (ground), and rus (fields). If a word has a locative it does not need a preposition to express place where, place to which, or place from which.
@lyndabynda I am aware that it is accusative, but I was just making the point that if a word has a locative, then it does not need a preposition when expressing motion towards. That is why the guard brings up the locative because the man first used the preposition "ad", which is not used with domum to express motion towards since domus has a locative.
@Dinosaurs424 ah ok so even though the locative isn't appropriate in this case, because domus HAS a locative then you don't use ad with the accusative. i'm so relieved to find out that john cleese is proficient in latin after all.
@lyndabynda Although Dinosaurs424 is right concerning the usage of prepositions, the mistake in this scene remains still. So I'm afraid your relief was a bit premature. :)
@lyndabynda Apparently he showed how locative and accusative can be mixed through lack of attention. Even though I don't quite agree with his statement that all words with locative dispense with prepositions. The usage of locative is considered archaic. The same with "accusative of direction" and "ablative of separation". But there doesn't seem to be a direct dependence. For instance, 'bellum' surely has a usable locative, but at the same time such expressions as "ex bello" are vastly used.
Hmm... What does the locative case have to do with anything here? Accusativus directionis fits the context perfectly, as Brian suggests. A mistake on behalf of Monty Python's writers? A shame really, since the entire joke is based on grammar pedantry.
Sure thing. But firstly the locative of 'domus' is 'domi' (just like the locative of 'humus' is 'humi') and secondly the locative case answers the question 'where?' as in 'in the house' or 'on the ground'. It introduces location, not direction or, as the centurion said, motion towards.
@constenebricus The centurion seems to think that the locative is the term for words that don't use a preposition in place constructions. He corrects ad domum to just domum and says that's the locative. A bit of a gaff, yeah.
@anarchangel23 Oh, I didn't catch the 'ad' part at first. I remember listening to the DVD commentaries on Life of Brian. They said in connection with this scene that John Cleese used to teach Latin at school. I imagine he forgot a thing or two about the language since then. It's still a good scene, but damn... it could be even better. Could be worse on the other hand.
