Alright guys here we go again stop saying Brady and Montana are the same first of all the rules to protect QB's this day...Montana,Elway,Marino,and Kelly were lucky to even start a game...Montana is King Brady is'nt even close if Joe had all these rules protecting him no broken back no head injuries longer to play...Montana Tough Brady Paper Lion....besides Brady is a actor and a crybaby..
@espdemon Montana didnt have any great Wrs in his first two Super Bowls, but Montana and Brady are basically mirror images of each other . The 49ers should have drafted him because he always wanted to be a 49er
@espdemon -The funny thing is that Montana didn't cheat his way through three Super Bowls. Unlike Brady, Montana also won all four he played in, unlike the fourth in which Brady choked with an extremely good receiving corps, and Montana never threw a pick in a Super Bowl, either. People who say that Montana is a system QB are shitting themselves, because that's every QB ever to play the sport, especially Brady and the Belichick Pats. Ever heard of the Erhardt-Perkins system?
@espdemon Montana won before Clark, Rice, and Taylor, and didn't have to cheat to do it. Montana played in a different time, too, when the rules weren't oriented towards the passing game.
@wodkins.. First of all how is Brady not what he once was? He won MVP while throwing to a bunch of undersized receivers. He will never be as good as Montana? Ok so if he wins one more ring that puts him at 4 rings w/ 5 appearances. Montana wasn't able to get to 5. Joe is the greatest ever as of this moment. But chill with the "he will never be as good as.." It just screams nostalgic fanboy.
As great as Joe was, he should've gave Steve the staring position in the 49ers and gave him advice. I think Steve's ADHD ass would've benefited from it. Because Joe's age came through in 93 and 94. Despite great stretches of ball from "The King" and ultimate competitor".
Thanks for the three greatest videos of all-time. But Montana was in a three step to five step drop QB offense called the West Coast, which makes any QB 's life easier because the running backs are receiving option. Wheres the Coryell, Perkins, run-heavy offense, and run & shoot are coventional offense that don't relied on third or fourth option. They relied heavily on receivers and less on running backs (as receivers). And that's why Joe isn't disputed as the best.
@luke90kid Loaded question...my best recollection is Montana missed almost two years of football with an elbow injury of sorts. Steve Young played great during that stretch, I think he even won NFL MVP one of the years. Once Joe was healthy the niners had to make some tough choices. If Joe started again, Young would've probably demanded a trade. Joe only had a couple more years in him where Steve had a good 5-10 still in him. So they traded Montana. (to be cont'd)
@MasonMediaClips Montana stated that had he been given at least the opportunity to earn his job back (as if he need to) then he would have remained in San Francisco. Steve Young however refused the challenge. George Seifert, eager to make "his mark," was equally unwilling to allow Montana to compete with Steve Young in training camp and the preseason. Regardless of the circumstances, one does not betray the greatest quarterback in history, particularly in this fashion.
@luke90kid In an ideal world, Young would've graciously given his spot back to the greatest qb of all-time, Joe would've beat Dallas in the NFC championship, won another Super Bowl and then retire. Then Young would've still gotten his chance to win his Super Bowl and the niners would now have 6 rings instead of five. Obviously that's too much to ask from Steve who earned his spot, but again, in an ideal world for niner fans that would've been great (to be cont'd)
@BigdogH201 Your exactly right!! Steve was an selfish, arrogant SOB. In ths corner we have Joe Montana. A man that has won 4 Super Bowl. And in the other corner we have a man that has won absolutley nothing in the NFL. And yet he is on the sidelines crying and whinning about wanting to play. But ultimately it was that fool George Siefert's fault for giving in to that crying jerk Steve Young!
@BigdogH201 Your exactly right!! Steve Young was a whinning selfish, arrogant jerk! And George Seifert was a fool for choosing that bumb Steve Young (a man that had won nothing in the NFL) over Joe Montana (A man that had won 4 Super Bowls and was considered the greates Quarterback ever!) So what happened when he chose Steve? 3 to 4 NFC Championship appearances with only one victory. Curse you Seifert!
@luke90kid On the other hand, you got to look at it from Joe's perspective? He's gotta be thinking at the time, "What do I have to do to have my spot back after getting healthy? Win 4 Super Bowls, 3 SB MVP's? Is that enough? Or did I have to win 5 Super Bowls to get that right???" Bottom line was, the niners had to make a business decision. Young would play longer than Joe and wasn't going to hang around to watch him retire. Who can really blame Steve...and who can really blame Joe?
@MasonMediaClips "Who can blame Steve?" I can't stand Steve Young! There is no question that if Montana had remained there in San Fransisco they would have won more Super Bowls. Joe Montana thrived off of being challenged, it brought out the best in him. Stupid George Siefert should have taken advantage of that. Who cares if Young would have asked to be traded. Where would he have gone? It was the west coast offense that made him successful. He would not have been successful on another team.
Greatest quarter back in NFL history. Went to the super bowl four times and won ALL four times and played amazing ALL four times. Also most graceful style of throwing the ball too- floats like a butterfly in zero gravity. When it comes to football, Joe is the king.
Thanks for the Vid! I agree, Joe is the greatest QB of all time. Accuracy, Ball Handling, and Decision making, Outstanding! I recorded Joe's last game on VHS, I think I better find it and record it on DVD.

Montana ---best ever. Stats are meaningless today---QB's are throwing 50....60 times a game. Montana never threw an interception in a Super Bowl. I rest my case.
@matt75hooper brady throwing 50 TD's was great..but that doesnt mean his the best, people should know the 89 n 94 49ers would pull out there starters if they have a 21 point lead, same as the 99 ram's,if they have a huge lead in the game, they will sit out starters in later quarters..the 2007 pats on other hand pile up points even if they are leading 28 to 7,remember in 2007 coaches start complaining about why bill belichick is running up the score..is for brady record or hes pissed he got caught.
Those who assume Bradshaw won his 4 rings due to D please watch TERRY BRADSHAW HIGHLIGHT video, his D didn't make him SB MVP twice, NFL MVP, get him in the HOF first ballot or make HOF LB Ham say he wouldn't have 4 rings without Terry. Those who think Joe didn't have a great D. You have to give it up to Bill Walsh as well, since he is the mastermind that designed the West Coast offense for them. A HOF QB, H.C, WR on the same team and an owner with a shit load of money and you have the best franchise in the NFL at the time. Teams that are running W.C systems today are emulating Montana and Rice's skill set. Accuracy and good route running. It wont work without accuracy, good decision making and a #1 WR. Thats why the Redskins have a losing record. NO QB....
The last clip of him pointing his finger number 1 says it all cool stuff man there hasen't been a Q.B. like him since he retired. I miss those days as a kid waiting to see him win at crunch time !!!!!
What's really amazing is the ACCURACY with which he throws. Look closely at the receivers. The ball almost always hits them right on the numbers. Unreal...
You're right about the Rams too, MMS. Ravaged with injuries, Youngblood's broken leg, they still gave Pitt all they could handle. The two plays where Bradshaw went deep later in the game, both the same playcall and Bradshaw himself said it never worked in practice. You're right about Cromwell also. He dropped an easy pick six that woulda had the Rams up by 9 going into the 4th. It woulda been Bradshaw's 4th of the game. I also recall Smith's EZ drop that woulda put Dallas over Pitt in SB13.
I agree, MMS. These guys like Ben never saw these QBs actually play year in and year out. Joe won on every level, Walsh or no Walsh. System QB my ass, they are clueless. Joe is one of the greatest in history under duress, out of the pocket throwing on the run, defense all over him, turning nothing into a big play. Ice cool. Bradshaw threw it up for grabs and Swann/Stallworth made some of the sickest catches you will ever see. Other than that, it was Pittsburgh's defense that made that team roll.
That Rams team was 9-7 because they had a horrible year, most of their starters at one point or another were out with injury. They barely regrouped enough to make the playoffs and go to SBXIV, and their best player All-World Jack Youngblood had a busted leg. In that SB, Nolan Cromwell had a 4th pick of Bradshaw with nothing in front of him but end zone, and he dropped it. Steelers were lucky, just like the year before when Jackie Smith dropped what would have been the game winning TD for Dallas.
The MVP in all four Montana Super Bowls were offensive players, with Montana winning three times and Rice once. Staubach didn't call his own plays and was routinely considered the better QB than Bradshaw in the 70's. Bradshaw simply had a better defense than Dallas, great as Dallas' was. Bradshaw struggled and tossed three picks and barely beat the 9-7 Rams in SB14. If not for the Steelers defense in the 4th quarter, the Rams win that game. He won his first SB vs Minnesota 16-6. Defense. Period.
Bingo, Tube. Within three posts you can tell these people never watched the QBs they're discussing aside from video clips. Anyone with the football IQ of a watermelon and who actually watched those teams knows what won those Super Bowls in Pittsburgh. Bradshaw did his part, the Steel Curtain did the rest. And Staubach was always considered better than Bradshaw those years.
First - Bradshaw without a little thing called "The Steel Curtain" does not win close to four SB's.
Second - QB's were still allowed to be killed in the 80's, they threw more than Bradshaw's era which meant more chances to get killed, and receivers were still getting the hell knocked out of them in the 1980s as the rules were not enforced close to how they are now.
So, you're suggesting that "The Steel Curtain" played no main factor in Pittsburgh's SBs, but it was Bradshaw who carried them? I've no reply here. LOL
@Bigbadben7 Hmm...the Giants beet the Patriots with Defense and Eli is MVP. Tom Brady was MVP when Pats beet the Rams. Dezmond Howard won MVP when Favre deserved it a lot more (No Int's 2 TD's 1 rush TD). MVP is not an indicator of weather or not a QB played an intricate part in winning the game. Do a little more WORK, and look up the actual statistics. People now days are way to used to having everything handed to them
Eli won MVP because his last name was Manning even though Tyree was MVP who not only made the historic catch onhis helmet but also the TD early in the 4th that gave the Giants the lead.
Brady was MVP vs Rams becasue there was no clear cut MVP, like Montana in XVI so they gave it to the QB.
Ben could have esily ben MVP of XLIII going 21 of 29 for 256 yds, 1 TD which came on the game winning drive he orcestrated.
Sickening to hear the manning/brady comparisons, Joe played vs the bears, giants, redskins, packers, cowboys, rams -80s-some pretty dominanting defenses-he beat marino and elway in the super bowl not r.grossman-he played when qbs could be absolutely lit up and no flag "giving" a first down away. He was great i regular season but he was greater when it mattered(please see manning pick in sb) but ill save best for last-when u argue elway didnt have equal talent watch their mon nite game when a chief
Manning's pick in the SB was just as much Reggie Wayne's falut for cutting the route short.
I'm a Steelers fan so Manning's pick just makes Roethlisber look better for the game winning drive in SB XLIII, lol, so I'm not building up Manning, however, Joe threw an int that was dropped by Louis Billips in SB XXIII that would have given Cincy the touchback and manintained a 4th quarter 7 point lead, The Drive would have never happened as CIncy got another FG in the 4th as well.
I so agree with the nauseating comparisons to manning/brady.. those two are closer to Dan Marino than Joe montana on super bowl wins alone.. 1 is closer to 0 than it is to 4.. Simple Math, something manning/brady fans never understood in school..... If there is someone better, show me.. until then, JOE MONTANA IS THE GREATEST QB EVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The only reason the 85 bears aret the 84 bears is bec of the great joe. Also the only reason the 85 bears became the 85 bears is bec joe got hurt that year. But if he hadnt got hurt there would have never been a 85, 86, 87, or any other team foe that matter. Joe will live for ever. & pl dont give me that shit about him winning only bec he had rice. FYI joe won 2 , let me say again, 2 superbowls before rice got there. If anything joe made jerry who he was.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Joe was 100 % in 85 and didn't hurt his back until 86 and had one and done playoff games in three straight years 85, 86 ,87, all with passer raitings in the 40s, threw 3 picks in the 81 NFC title game and "The Catch" was a throw away made a TD, he was benched 10 years in to his career in 88, had a game losing int dropped by Billips in the 4th quarter of SB XXIII that would have maintained a 7 point Cincy lead and was a System QB who never had to play under the pre 78 bump and run past 5 yds era.
Now, QB's are protected by the rules (no hitting in the legs and can't touch WR's). Before you look at this clip you think wow...Manning is very very accurate. Then, when you watch this clip, you see the difference. Montana hits his receivers in stride so they can keep running (invented YAC). Montana was very nimble and could make things happen with his arm, feet, or smarts.
Last week, I had a guy tell me that Favre is the greatest QB ever...I looked at him like he was high.
Then when Favre threw that awful interception, I looked at him and said "Montana would have NEVER thrown that bad of an interception in the clutch like that."
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Joe Montana is the smooth pretty boy QB who ran the west coast offense and was a dink and dunk kind of QB..crafty and smart under Bill Walsh direction
Favre is a mans man who is a gunslinger and is tough as nails..He took a team to the NFC championship at age 40 and he took huge hits the entire game
the best of our generation, maybe 1 day Manning or Brady Or Brees or some other QB Will be but until they accomplish more Montana is still best of our era not in stats but in the thing that matters most big time Wins
fantastic video highlights. Great job. Montana was just brilliant, and I think you captured his greatness quite well. It's nice to see such high-quality clips of Montana online. Thanks.
He IS the undisputed greatest quarterback of all-time.
The only reason he is not as mentioned as other old prime-time player is that he doesn't participate in anything the NFL does anymore. He walked away to spend time with his loved ones and that's what he does.
@rjordanhammond Well done is an understatement. Very classy, classic and professional. A fitting tribute to "THE BEST QUARTERBACK I HAVE EVER SEEN OR EXPECT TO SEE...........Thanks.......
If every great QB in the history of the game pleaded their case in a court of law in defense of their claim to the greatest QB ever, the jury would find that Joe has overwhelming evidence in his favor.
Someone gave me the Joe Montana Story on VHS years ago (that's where I got the HS and ND footage). Couple years ago I bought the 49ers Team History DVD's from NFL Films (that's the bulk of the footage). When I decided to put this together I found the Chiefs Yearbook VHS tapes on Amazon for like $4 each.
Almost forgot, I also bought the yearbook for Montana's last year with the niners to get the footage of his last game. I was a little bummed they only put two plays on there but oh well. You can find used NFL yearbooks on VHS for $3-$5 on Amazon. As a football fan, I felt like I found buried treasure : )
Just my personal (Bay Area biased) list: 1. Montana 2. Unitas 3. Marino. 4. Elway 5. Young 6. Starr 7. Bradshaw 8. Staubach 9. Namath 10. Stabler I haven't added Favre, Brady, the Mannings, Roethlisberger, etc because they're still active.
Hey I am a Cowboys Fan and I still think that Montana was the Greatest QB to ever play. He redefined a postion and possibly the Game of Football. And he will always be better than Brady. Brady has a Super Bowl Loss Montana Does not.
@wodkins Well let's see what happens this year. if Brady wins it this year then he'll have 4 SB wins and 5 total appearances.. which will give Brady the edge, but again, let's see what happens in the playoffs..
@espdemon Yeah brady is not the QB he once was. Montana as I said redefined the Quarterback position into what it is today. Before Montana you had Quarterbacks with gunslinger mentality now they really on accuracy not arm strength hence why more passes are completed. Brady will never be the quarterback Montana was.
@wodkins I have to agree with you totally, Montana had every element of the ideal quarterback and could do it all. Joe could win in any situation and bats 1000 percent in superbowls. hands down the best eva
When Joe was leading the Chiefs into the playoffs, I bet there was a lot of Cowboy fans sweating bullets. Flash backs of '81 dancing in their eye's. I know one cowboy fan that was begging for someone to shoot Joe cause he could see him winning another one on Dallas. LOL,
Like the new kids out saying Brady is the best ever, while I wanna rate Joe as the best what about guys like Unitas, Namath, Starr, Bradshaw, I'm just saying there are a lot of greats. Brady and the Mannings have a way to go.
Joe Montana is #1. Of course though, some kids who have little knowledge of the game will say Manning or Brady is number 1, but they never had a magical feel. Brady didn't win those SB's. Vinneteri did, and they cheated anyways. Peyton only has 1 Super Bowl, so enough said. Montana #1!!!!!!
I agree wholeheartedly, Joe should be the undisputed (greatest) QB of all time. -Joe Montana LED drives, inch by inch to victory, he threw the ball without even looking sometimes (like a basketball player).
People love to say Tom Brady is in the running for Joe's title but I've yet to see Tom actually prove that he's beyond the offensive system he runs, other than the kicker who always jumped into to save the day.

TubeGunner 1 year ago 3
I agree, MMS. These guys like Ben never saw these QBs actually play year in and year out. Joe won on every level, Walsh or no Walsh. System QB my ass, they are clueless. Joe is one of the greatest in history under duress, out of the pocket throwing on the run, defense all over him, turning nothing into a big play. Ice cool. Bradshaw threw it up for grabs and Swann/Stallworth made some of the sickest catches you will ever see. Other than that, it was Pittsburgh's defense that made that team roll.
TubeGunner 1 year ago 3
That Rams team was 9-7 because they had a horrible year, most of their starters at one point or another were out with injury. They barely regrouped enough to make the playoffs and go to SBXIV, and their best player All-World Jack Youngblood had a busted leg. In that SB, Nolan Cromwell had a 4th pick of Bradshaw with nothing in front of him but end zone, and he dropped it. Steelers were lucky, just like the year before when Jackie Smith dropped what would have been the game winning TD for Dallas.
MisterMasterShafter 1 year ago
And the Niners D in the 80s was as outright dominant as The Steel Curtain? Someone here wasn't watching.
MisterMasterShafter 1 year ago
49ers D wasn't as dominant but look at the SB games they played in and who they shut down.
Marino and Elway in their prime and two top notch # 1 seed Benglas Offenses.
It's not like Jow won shoot outs in those games.
Bradshaw threw a TD pass in the 4th quarter of all 4 SB games and he called his own plays running and passing which made him a real field general.
The MVP of all 4 Steelers 70s SBs were offensive players, 3 pertaining to Terry's arm WR Swann and Terry twice.
I'll send a video
Bigbadben7 1 year ago
The MVP in all four Montana Super Bowls were offensive players, with Montana winning three times and Rice once. Staubach didn't call his own plays and was routinely considered the better QB than Bradshaw in the 70's. Bradshaw simply had a better defense than Dallas, great as Dallas' was. Bradshaw struggled and tossed three picks and barely beat the 9-7 Rams in SB14. If not for the Steelers defense in the 4th quarter, the Rams win that game. He won his first SB vs Minnesota 16-6. Defense. Period.
TubeGunner 1 year ago 5
Bingo, Tube. Within three posts you can tell these people never watched the QBs they're discussing aside from video clips. Anyone with the football IQ of a watermelon and who actually watched those teams knows what won those Super Bowls in Pittsburgh. Bradshaw did his part, the Steel Curtain did the rest. And Staubach was always considered better than Bradshaw those years.
MisterMasterShafter 1 year ago

First - Bradshaw without a little thing called "The Steel Curtain" does not win close to four SB's.
Second - QB's were still allowed to be killed in the 80's, they threw more than Bradshaw's era which meant more chances to get killed, and receivers were still getting the hell knocked out of them in the 1980s as the rules were not enforced close to how they are now.
MisterMasterShafter 2 years ago 2
Do you realize that NO Steel curtain member was ever the MVP of a SUPER BOWL but Terry was twice.
Also, Terry retired with th emost post season TD passes in NFL history.
Montana's Defense was always a top notch Defense and it is just as responsible for all the Montana SBs as Joe.
they dominated ledgends Elway and Marino om SBs and kicked ass in two close games vs Cincinnati in SBs.
Bigbadben7 1 year ago
So, you're suggesting that "The Steel Curtain" played no main factor in Pittsburgh's SBs, but it was Bradshaw who carried them? I've no reply here. LOL
MisterMasterShafter 1 year ago 3
@Bigbadben7 Hmm...the Giants beet the Patriots with Defense and Eli is MVP. Tom Brady was MVP when Pats beet the Rams. Dezmond Howard won MVP when Favre deserved it a lot more (No Int's 2 TD's 1 rush TD). MVP is not an indicator of weather or not a QB played an intricate part in winning the game. Do a little more WORK, and look up the actual statistics. People now days are way to used to having everything handed to them
hartfire0 1 year ago
@hartfire0

@Bigbadben7 Ok, soo..you're basicly agreeing with what I said then.

"less aggressive defenses of Montana's era". LMAO!!!!!
Parcells & Belichick's Giants, Ditka/Ryan's Bears, Gibbs' Redskins, Rams, Eagles - nah, these defensives weren't aggressive.
Good God where do these clueless people come from?

Joe never played under the pre 78 rules where defenders could chuck receivers past 5 yds and D linemen could had slap to get to the QB quciker.
You can never compare what those QBs faced defensivley with the less agressive defenses of Montana's era.
Do I think Joe is the best since the rules changes? Maybe, but the West Coast System never exceled until the rules changes.
Watch a Johhny Unitus highligh reel and consider the old rules, hell even half of Bradshaw's films are from that era.
Bigbadben7 2 years ago

Bigbadben7 2 years ago
@cway31

Anyone who thinks Montana can't take a beating better go back and watch his games
He tore apart the '84 Bears defense, that was statistically better than the '85 version...and was one of the few QBs who dissected the '46 defense

Montana #1 QB of all time.
Better than Brady and Manning.
Best ever period!

Then when Favre threw that awful interception, I looked at him and said "Montana would have NEVER thrown that bad of an interception in the clutch like that."

Joe would have been knockd out in the 2nd QT

He IS the undisputed greatest quarterback of all-time.
The only reason he is not as mentioned as other old prime-time player is that he doesn't participate in anything the NFL does anymore. He walked away to spend time with his loved ones and that's what he does.
In the end NO ONE comes close to his talent.

MasonMediaClips 2 years ago
Almost forgot, I also bought the yearbook for Montana's last year with the niners to get the footage of his last game. I was a little bummed they only put two plays on there but oh well. You can find used NFL yearbooks on VHS for $3-$5 on Amazon. As a football fan, I felt like I found buried treasure : )

Hey I am a Cowboys Fan and I still think that Montana was the Greatest QB to ever play. He redefined a postion and possibly the Game of Football. And he will always be better than Brady. Brady has a Super Bowl Loss Montana Does not.
wodkins 2 years ago 18
@wodkins Well let's see what happens this year. if Brady wins it this year then he'll have 4 SB wins and 5 total appearances.. which will give Brady the edge, but again, let's see what happens in the playoffs..
espdemon 1 year ago
@espdemon Yeah brady is not the QB he once was. Montana as I said redefined the Quarterback position into what it is today. Before Montana you had Quarterbacks with gunslinger mentality now they really on accuracy not arm strength hence why more passes are completed. Brady will never be the quarterback Montana was.
wodkins 11 months ago
@wodkins I have to agree with you totally, Montana had every element of the ideal quarterback and could do it all. Joe could win in any situation and bats 1000 percent in superbowls. hands down the best eva
r1undertaker 1 year ago

5/5 because that is an awesome highlight reel.
g4video5 2 years ago 5
I agree wholeheartedly, Joe should be the undisputed (greatest) QB of all time. -Joe Montana LED drives, inch by inch to victory, he threw the ball without even looking sometimes (like a basketball player).
People love to say Tom Brady is in the running for Joe's title but I've yet to see Tom actually prove that he's beyond the offensive system he runs, other than the kicker who always jumped into to save the day.
