@hi15ish You are watching highlights. When you watch hightlights you get a distorted idea of a player. It is like reading someone's resume, you just get the good stuff. Jordan number 1. Kobe number 2. After that it is open for debate.
@wowzers57 You are fixated in one era. You have to look at all era. Kobe has five rings with different players, with Shaq, without Shaq. This is impressive. Magic's claim to fame is his triple doubles. He has around 150. I'm not sure the exact number. He is second in the NBA behind Oscar Robertson. Yes, and Magic has five rings, too.
@JayGatsbyOdysseus I'm not fixated on anything. I grew up with todays generations of stars and was lucky enough to grow up in the 90's and watch some old game tapes of the 70's and 80's.
Kobe is good, definitely a top 5 player, but not better than Magic. Just my two cents. Magic was a better overall player and a physical phenomena.
Another play, this time a shot, was when he came from right to left, ending at the foul line area and receiving the ball. Turning and cocking that ball back to his ear in one motion as he did; Jabbar and his 7'2 frame and long reach/wingspan closing in quickly; Bird let fly this VERY high arching beauty...swiiishhh!!
One of the most difficult passes I've ever seen anyone do was (and I've only seen this once, on some b-ball blooper show) when Bird had the ball deep in the left corner, he made this incredible left handed bullet pass, kind of a wrap around chest high fling way out from his side, away from his body. It was right on the money under the basket to someone. Cousy, Maravich, Stockton, Johnson, I've never seen anyone but Bird make a pass like that.
That second play is one of the greatest plays, if not THEE GREATEST PLAY I've ever seen. This is another skill of Larry's that nobody talks about, his hand-eye coordination. He shot that ball near three-point range, has the wherewithal to follow the shot, and finish the play with his LEFT HAND whiled drifting to his right out of bounds! It's an absolutely ridiculous play.
Excellent video! I like how you had the actual announcers for each game and also the different players commenting on Bird's game. So many people from the younger generation fail to realize how GREAT Bird was. In my opinion he is the best all around player ever!
The other teams in the NBA were lucky that his right index finger was all messed up check it out at the 5:41 mark on the video.
