@stutzand21 It's different than the Curnow version...and a lot harder! I like both equally, but this one's closer to the heart for me since it's a collaboration between my friend Kevin Swaim and Lyle Mays (Metheny's pianist and composer of the original) that was done especially for this concert where Lyle guest soloed, came to sectionals, and hung out. Definitely one of the coolest experiences...especially when he schooled me at pool...that's another story. :)
I really want to get lead chops for my studio jazz band. you have a great sound and your attacks in the upper register are fantastic. how do you practice?
If you don't mind me asking the forbidden question, what kind of gear are you playing? I realize it's usually bush league to ask... but Wayne Bergeron would tell you, lead is different :D
@KrummyBear lol...it's all good. Wayne's right, and the horn is actually the Bergeron model Kanstul and mouthpiece is a GR Technologies 65S...deeper than most people's lead pieces because I bottom out in anything shallower.
@dfjazzzzz Very cool. I'm playing all Shew stuff... Shew Zhorn, shew lead... Shew. It's got fairly decent sound, but low range is definitely lacking, and it cuts off pretty hard anything above a G :S ... I want something with a deeper cup, but with a fairly round rim.
@mkaiserme Thanks Mike...Videotaping yourself and watching it is even better than practicing in front of a mirror. These couple videos are from footage of the 1 O'Clock Lab Band documentary on this last year that they are in the process of making. Several members of the band had these little HD cameras set up in front of them at random concerts throughout the year.
and this is why I'm glad I play trumpet

@trumpetdudeman07 Thanks man...It's kinda hard to talk about details in a small post on here, but most of my practice is focused on efficiency.

What arrangement is this? It's not the Curnow.
Reinocerous25 5 months ago
@Reinocerous25 It's Lyle May's and Kevin Swaim's collaboration that was arranged for Lyle's guest artist residency at North Texas.

Dan, this is a great idea. I want to encourage you to keep doing this.
A lead trumpet cam. I can't imagine anything better--so long as the player is as accomplished as you.
Seriously, I'm a fan. Young players can learn a lot from this sort of thing.
