It sickens me that over the years anyone has shone this woman any respect at all. There is nothing she can ever do or say that will wash the blood from her hands of our POW's in Vietnam. I have never once to this day ever heard her say she was sorry for what she did to cause those deaths and the brutal beatings that left many others handicapped even today. Scum in not even a good enough name to call her.
I really do hate when TED brings out celebrity ignoramuses. What, they couldn't be bothered to find any scientist working on aging? Any psychologist that deals with elders? Any expert on any subject at all?
To those unfortunate and misguided humans who have posted rude comments here, I quote Viktor Frankl, who is quoted in this video by Ms. Fonda: "Everything you have in life can be taken from you except one thing, your freedom to choose how you will respond to the situation. This is what determines the quality of the life we've lived. Not whether we've been rich or poor, famous or unknown, healthy or suffering. What determines our quality of life is how we relate to these realities..."
Because she says nothing of substance and she gets all the science wrong. Because she implies that wisdom always comes with age rather than with knowledge. Because she wraps it all up in the bullshit of mysticism and "spirituality."
That's why I disliked it. It's unworthy of being a TED talk.
@negrituha She opposed American genocidal policies in South East Asia to the extent that she actually "consorted" with the intended victims, and some weak-minded fools call that "treason" when in reality it was the highest form of patriotism.
@roell29 Doing stupid things that result in the deaths of US citizens to save the lives of people you think we shouldn't be fighting is not patriotism, it's stupidity. If I go around stabbing soldiers because I disagree with the deaths of Iraqis, I am not a patriot, I am a murderer. She is no better.
Jane Fonda stole my lines and versed them much better than I. I thought that I was a genius when I figured out this 3rd acts - rebirth by myself at my 60th birthday without getting help from motivational guru such as Anthony Robins. I am so grateful in coming across her TED talk. It assures me that I am in the right direction on my journey in longevity revolution.
Jane comes from a sev. dysfunctional HllyWd family, about the only kind, and grew into a sev. dysfunctional adult. While I feel for her, she is one of the very last people I would be taking 'life' advice from. She looks into shadows for knowledge in order to make herself feel whole. But she will never find IT. So she regularly generates garbage for others to be dragged into, just to justify herself. Why are so many people afraid at any age? They lack something, and it is not worldly knowledge.
Airamericaman has his head where it shouldn't even fit. Henry Kissinger is personally responsible for more deaths—50,000+— than he blames Fonda for, yet he is still enjoying life so many years after his arbitrary and cynical extension of the Nam war. Where is his conscience? Where is his brain?
@airamericaman It's amazing that there are still people out there that believe this. Those who would take the time to do their own research instead of listening to what other people tell them could avoid spreading nonsense such as this and countless other nonsensical artifacts. Are you also inclined to believe the Richard Gere has a gerbil running around in his ass at all times?

If you don't understand entropy don't mention it and make yourself look like an idiot
and why is it that 90% of TEDxWomen talks can be summarized down to "You can consciously improve your life by choosing how you interact with other people"
seriously where does that fall under technology entertainment design?
I thought it was a wonderful talk. It is normal that not everyone agree with her, but I guess the main reason so many people are leaving nasty and insulting comments is the fact that what she is saying is disturbing: the idea that one can choose to live (or not to) differently and that it takes courage, faith and commitment. it is so much easier to just to be passive and feel like all is fate, bad genes, or bad luck...
"I guess the main reason many people are leaving nasty... comments..."
...is because she's not an expert, claimed to have "studied" for an entire year (woohoo), doesn't back her claims with evidence, gets the science she tries to use to sound smart completely wrong, tries to wrap it in pseudo-intellectual bullshit more befitting clergy than a TED talk, and all on top of implying that wisdom is a product of age rather than knowledge.
jane fonda at ted even at ted for women is just lowering standards. Ofc you were depressed jane, you thought about yourself as a beautiful woman for decades, and on that value you built your life as an actress. The truth is, beauty is not an inner value like intelligence. So you turned to mysticism and pseudo knowledge. You sorry ass stupid girl you should not have any place there.
@lakermangmx I totally agree with you! I am a 20 year old college student and for a 74 year old woman she honestly doesn't seem as wise to me as I would expect a 74 year old to be. I enjoy TED talks very much but I agree that this lady speaking about her mysticism and pseudo beliefs do lower the standards.
So, TedxWomen? Why? Are there some truths that Men don't need to know about? Is Tedx just for men? This isn't very feminist, if women are equal, then why do they need their own safe space and their own Ted talk!
We have separate bathrooms because of genitals, not a difference in ideology.
@Haagaustin Absolutely!! I honestly don't think this 74 year old lady is very wise for someone her age. Hey I'm 20 years old and I would expect her to be much more wiser than what she portrayed herself to be in this talk.
@Bfavrestarr415 I'm sure that most of them were because of her wrong use of entropy. She had a point but you can't get away with such a blatant misrepresentisation of the second law of thermodynamics and "Human spirit" never aging, this added with "TED Women" is enough to piss me off, since it adds to my somewhat sexist view of women being more susceptible to pseudo science and buzzwords like "Human spirit". Anyway a lot of them might be unfounded and simply out of spite for women, who knows.
@Lulzalutioners Note if it had been "TED Women" and it was actually good content I think people would not down vote more than in any other TED video, but that video was simply insulting to women that it should be allowed in the first place in the TEDtalks library with "TED Women" pasted on the wall.
@DiversusVir Human spirit keeps growing is BS. Our memory loses more and more as we age. If we have any goals in our old age our bodies are starting to fail us and slow us down.
@Stonegoal For one, she talked about spirit, not neural and physical health. Secondly, the way you are going to be once you are old, depends greatly on how you live your life. You can't avoid decay completely, but people can remain much more functional if they keep them selfs active through their whole life. Thirdly, second point does not relate to the "spirit" in any account, unless we talk about people who suffer from neural degradation that seriously handicaps normal brain function
There was truth in the first part but when she used entropy and "the human spirit" I stopped the video. She was simply wrong there and even though she said people get wiser over time she obviously did not understand entropy.
Great, we live 34 years longer than our ancestors, and she has done everything with her money and power not to show it....... and you believe anything she has to say?
I may sound like an arrogant, naive young man, but I say that there should not be a third act in the sense that the baby boomers should not use the third act to continue to operate in the professional world. They are holding up the advancement of two, and soon three, generations in the work force. Move on Jane. Pass the torch and bow out so the young can take your place.
I don't get it why you seperate women from men. Why do you need TEDwomen? Men and women are allowed to talk on TEDtalks, but only women are allowed to talk on another TED event? This seems sexist to me. Get rid of TEDwomen and let both gender speak at the same TED
@creadev I don't know enough about her to know whether or not she is up to the task of understanding physics and/or biology.
All I know for sure is that I've always been madly in love with Barbarella!
If I found the talk to be a little airy-fairy I also found it to be upbeat and encouraging. This may, however, be because I will turn 50 later this year.
"The days have gone down in the West behind the hills into shadow. How did it come to this?" - Theoden
@deedubya286 I'm 20 years old and I honestly don't think this lady is very wise for someone of her age. At my young age of 20 I feel like very happy and whole. I don't think you have to be a certain 60 years old or older in order to feel whole.
We probably will loose 40 years in the next generation due to increased stress, bad food habbits, fast food, high cholesterol, high sugars and salts. Lack of balance.
Well when it comes to adding another 30 years to the next generation we need to deal with the diseases and illnesses like heart issues, depression, cancer as with the past people died of small things which we can cure today with antibiotics and vaccines.
sorry Jane but you lost me in "everything follows the second law of thermodynamics...except for the human spirit" that is just ingonrant pseduoscinece bullshit
I really hoped I was going to like this. But I'm left with nothing good to say. The world is full of old men and women who are doing grand and wonderful things. There is no need for a condescending pep-talk. Young and old alike either do or don't. ie. Betty White could have been more inspiring, just stood there saying "look at me."
As usual from TED it was an illuminating and interesting talk, not what you would expect from Jane Fonda. Who cares if she got entropy wrong it didn't detract from her story.
Good for you! You didn't need to wait until her age to realize it. ) That's because the speaker missed the main point - knowledge, as it is stated in few comments below.
Another contradiction with this talk: she became Christian (doesn't really matter what confession, the point is religion) in the "3rd act", which represents neither open-mindedness nor wisdom.
Of course not, get millions of $, then be busy from plastic surgery to Botox injections to fight natural aged looks in order to get money from your looks. Hard work! )
@ivnat77 You shouldn't judge her so harshly. Adulation is like a drug. Once you are adored for your beauty is easy to fall into the pleasure of letting others worship you and then you do anything to keep that. Spend a lot of money and time. Because it is orgasmically good. She seems to be at the beginning of finding out there is happiness in a lot different places and explore that. And that is a good thing. She could have gotten depressed and killed herself or other stupid thing like that.
No judgement there, just the facts. We all try to make money the best way we can. Some win, some loose - that's the nature of this monetary system we play into.
Good that she is exploring other ways to be happy, but no need to make a fool of yourself in trying to look smarter than you are by mixing and confusing the terms of entropy, thermodynamic laws with human spirit and other nonsensical romantic notions.
ok we get it..she was Hanoi Jane 40 years ago. fucking annoying to have to wade through tons of those comments to find comments on the topic she is adressing right now.
I'm guessing most of the comments below are by young guys right in the middle of their first act. As somebody approaching the middle of their second act, I found this talk quite insightful. Thanks Jane...
Got extra time to live? - learn more, look after family. In response to the below comment - i have white pride and i am proud of it - why wouldn't i be! - or am i just responding to astro turfing
Sounds good if your rich. All these TED talks always sound nice if your rich. Must be nice to have paper money and slaves that do anything for it. Your whole self esteem revolves around money.... slaves..... we are slaves in a masters cage
she's implying that there is positive 'potential' for the 'third act' of our lives. she's not throwing around fluff but just trying to put out an optimum goal instead of just what we usually hear about aging... dread and unhappiness. i'm a young guy and this talk didn't grip me particularly but for many i'm sure this is a much needed message and i like it. she's not an amazing speaker but she did a fine job. lay off people. it may not be the message you're needing but don't thumb it down!
@wizard970 Are you fools still in the Vietnam mindset; it proved itself to be the wrong old war. Wakeup.. Don’t sing the same old song like a buffoon with vengeance.
The gain in life expectancy has almost entirely been due to the reduction in child mortality--from 20% in 1900 to less than 1% today. Once you hit adulthood in 1900, you expected to live a decent amount of time.
When they start having "TedX Men" events I'll start watching both the "TedX Men" and "TedX Women" talks until then I'll just stick to TedX where both men and women can talk.
"I have such a feeling of well being" Of course you do, you have over a 100 million in your bank account. Less stress = long life....we get it already.
@Copperfoilhat Plenty of evidence out there to show that money, once you rise above the worrying about paying to just stay alive, doesn't actually bring any happiness at all over people who just have enough to get by. The incidents of depression and suicide don't drop for the rich but I do understand that if you're not rich (as I'm not rich either) then its hard to see that riches won't bring happiness. Very hard sometimes.
Wow Hanoi Jane on a ted talk. Because of garbage like her when my uncle came back from Vietnam people threw garbage at him and called him a baby killer. I'm sorry to see that life gave her a third act.
@ratholin I am truly sorry that your Uncle was treated as you describe ...however Jane was only one among hundreds of thousands of Vietnam protesters who almost always protested peacefully ...together... as law abiding citizens around the world
some even had the courage to refuse to be drafted
It sickens me that over the years anyone has shone this woman any respect at all. There is nothing she can ever do or say that will wash the blood from her hands of our POW's in Vietnam.

I feel that a lot of those dislikes were for reasons other than content. Shame...
Bfavrestarr415 1 month ago

Stonegoal 1 month ago
@Stonegoal For one, she talked about spirit, not neural and physical health. Secondly, the way you are going to be once you are old, depends greatly on how you live your life. You can't avoid decay completely, but people can remain much more functional if they keep them selfs active through their whole life. Thirdly, second point does not relate to the "spirit" in any account, unless we talk about people who suffer from neural degradation that seriously handicaps normal brain function
DiversusVir 1 month ago
There was truth in the first part but when she used entropy and "the human spirit" I stopped the video. She was simply wrong there and even though she said people get wiser over time she obviously did not understand entropy.

I really hoped I was going to like this. But I'm left with nothing good to say. The world is full of old men and women who are doing grand and wonderful things. There is no need for a condescending pep-talk. Young and old alike either do or don't. ie. Betty White could have been more inspiring, just stood there saying "look at me."
waysworth 1 month ago
As usual from TED it was an illuminating and interesting talk, not what you would expect from Jane Fonda. Who cares if she got entropy wrong it didn't detract from her story.
jaqian 1 month ago
Wow... I am already in my "3rd act" as she describes it and i am 30.
salahhe 1 month ago
@salahhe
Good for you! You didn't need to wait until her age to realize it. ) That's because the speaker missed the main point - knowledge, as it is stated in few comments below.
Another contradiction with this talk: she became Christian (doesn't really matter what confession, the point is religion) in the "3rd act", which represents neither open-mindedness nor wisdom.
ivnat77 1 month ago
@ivnat77 I guess it is not so easy to be so beautiful. You tend to miss some things in life.
salahhe 1 month ago
@salahhe
Of course not, get millions of $, then be busy from plastic surgery to Botox injections to fight natural aged looks in order to get money from your looks. Hard work! )
ivnat77 1 month ago
@ivnat77 You shouldn't judge her so harshly. Adulation is like a drug. Once you are adored for your beauty is easy to fall into the pleasure of letting others worship you and then you do anything to keep that. Spend a lot of money and time. Because it is orgasmically good. She seems to be at the beginning of finding out there is happiness in a lot different places and explore that. And that is a good thing. She could have gotten depressed and killed herself or other stupid thing like that.
salahhe 1 month ago
@salahhe
No judgement there, just the facts. We all try to make money the best way we can. Some win, some loose - that's the nature of this monetary system we play into.
Good that she is exploring other ways to be happy, but no need to make a fool of yourself in trying to look smarter than you are by mixing and confusing the terms of entropy, thermodynamic laws with human spirit and other nonsensical romantic notions.
ivnat77 1 month ago
As a devout feminist... I have to agree with you. I'm sick and tired of all of these "for women" events undermining the whole thing. Bah!

she's implying that there is positive 'potential' for the 'third act' of our lives. she's not throwing around fluff but just trying to put out an optimum goal instead of just what we usually hear about aging... dread and unhappiness. i'm a young guy and this talk didn't grip me particularly but for many i'm sure this is a much needed message and i like it. she's not an amazing speaker but she did a fine job. lay off people. it may not be the message you're needing but don't thumb it down!

The gain in life expectancy has almost entirely been due to the reduction in child mortality--from 20% in 1900 to less than 1% today. Once you hit adulthood in 1900, you expected to live a decent amount of time.
