There are parts of this movie that upon first viewing u might think it's ridiculus but upon watching it a second time u realise what a work of art it is. There is a scene where the wind sweeps some grass the same time the sun comes out that is BEAUTIFUL. The only critisism I have with Malick is that sometimes it seems like he really wants to do nature films. More so in The New World.
as an infantryman with the US Army, I have heard from many soldiers, "I can't wait to shoot someone in the face". I believe every soldier should watch this movie and it's not all about "shooting someone in the face". there is so much more in war. as the cast in this movie did a superb job, i do believe that this can change a soldier's perspective.
@jhw930 I know a soldier frm my hometown who wanted to kill terrorist, all he would talk about is shooting ragheads, after his first kill, he committed suicide, I guess he learned about what you are saying, but he took it way to hard.
yeah, it was nearly a word for word quote! but i've also got a movie to test girlfriends with, mine is once upon a time in america. it's four hours long and i quiz them afterwards.
I dont know , i got mixed feelings about this movie. Although the story and main characters are great. The use of monologues were notoriously exagerrated. I was like "nah , he wont say something as cheesy as the meaning of life" But it did.
No offense to the true people that existed that are based off.
For me, that made it all the more real because it was just some kid thinking. What does he know about life? He's just naive and inexperienced enough to be attempting those kinds of questions in the way he does. We catch this guy at a turning point in his life when he discovers something else in the world, something so different, but then he gives his life away. You see it in his face then when he's cornered, it's like he realized his dream world is gone, he's going to really die.
Because he commits suicide by raising his gun and forcing the Japanese to shoot him. He didn't have to die, it was his choice, and I assumed he chose that because he couldn't cope with the reality of how terrible people can be.
this was a different kind of moive. its more philosophy of war. DO NOT WATCH if you want an actrion film it takes like an hour and a half for anything to happen

they butchered history in this movie. It is almost insulting to all those who died at the battle of Guadalcanal showing nothing of what they went through and making them look like insubordinate cowards.
@stealthfighter077 anyone with a basic understanding of the battle would know that Guadalcanal was a dense jungle with japanese offensives being mostly at night and many banzai charges. "Marines would never question an order"
Wrong. It happens all the time, there's disciplinary actions for it but it happens.
Saving Private Ryan butchered the story they were trying to portray far worse than TTRL, which is actually a fairly accurate movie.
@VodkaphileTTG just because a movie invokes memories of the battle it portrays is no testament to its accuracy. I'm just curious as to what particular aspects of the battle of Guadalcanal you think this movie demonstrates because I can't think of one. everything from the terrain to tactics to the indigenous people is wrong the natives actively aided US against Japan as opposed to the docile tribe portrayed.
Curious, were you fighting in this battle? Your knowledge of this battle leaves something to be desired.
Your assessments of what happened are wrong. Air support was the turning point in Gaudalcanal, many historians will confirm this. Japanese held mainly defensive or defensive-reactive in holding a point or defending a vulnerable point.
There are also "Ridge" skirmishes documented by historians in this battle, which this movie is centered around. Might want to study up.
@VodkaphileTG You can't possible make an assessment on my knowledge of the battle and I'm not going to make a judgment on your knowledge either. Guadalcanal was a 6 month long battle and yes towards the 2nd half of the campaign probably around december US had air superiority. Yes there were battles on ridges but not the large hilly and grassy plains showed in the movie. I'm not saying the movie was bad just not very accurate because the defining characteristics of the campaign are not portrayed.
The Thin Red Line is an extremely accurate portrayal of the events in which it's attempting to portray. It's not the entire Guadalcanal battle.

@shootstuffup Well the more life experience you have, the better the movie is. I saw it when I was 22 and found it a little bit long and boring, but as I grew up the movie started to change for me. I can see my self in different scenes today and I have experienced so much more - this is not a typical warmovie as you know it - its......so much more.
@rawdawg15 ok fair enough. I just dont involve political isues when I see a movie. Liberal or not, fake or not, I dont care. My mind is open, well maybe bacause im not from the US, therefore i dont give much for politics anymore.
@rawdawg15 not to be mean, but maybe u should watch it again. Some people understand a film better after they seen it for a second time. but then again, just like TheBrainstorm9703 said,
"However, The Thin Red Line stands out because of the psychology behind it, It really makes you think"
I saw this when I was like 14 and I remember that I thought it as really boring. I almost feel asleep like 5 times. And I don't remember anything but Sean Penn's face, Woody Harrelson blowing up his ass, George Clloney talking and that beautiful music. I can't even remember if they managed to take the hill.
its ironic that this movie was from the perspective of army infantry. whose assignment on guadalcanal was to clean up any resistance after the marines had already secured an airfield and pushed the main japanese force from the island. one of my favorite movies tho
"The thin red line" refers to R. Kipling's poem Tommy, most notably the line "We aren't no thin red 'eroes, nor we aren't no blackguards too,
But single men in barricks, most remarkable like you" which is kind of the point of Malick's movie, the men who took part in this were all too human no different from me and you, subject to the same doubts, fears and frailties.
The term was actually used 38 years before Kipling wrote 'Tommy' during the 'Crimean War' to describe the defensive line of the British Red Coats at the Batlle of Balaclava. This became a painting by Robert Gibb called 'The Thin Red Line' which pre-dates Kiplings poem by 11 years.
NO! the title stands for the emotional problems the soldiers have!
Every single soldier reacts different to the war in which he is! Some of them search for god, or something which is over all like the solider witt. Or you have men like you and me who are completly overextended. so every single man must choose on his own!
i don't get what the actual thin red line is. its in the title for this movie. it is used for the chapter titles in Band of Brothers, and also used in the chapter titles for the WWII game series Brothers in Arms
Where is the extended director's cut of this film ? Until this 4 hour version arrives at my local revival theater I will forever consider it to be a myth. Malick, stop meditating long enough to put that movie out while people still care !
As far as I remember - Pray for Us BUT :D I've found here as: "The Thin Red Line" - Jisas Yu Holem Hand Blom Mi or You can type : The thin red line theme song and search for its title:S:)
fluxmuldar PROFOUNDly observed [The soldiers may not have TALKED like this, but they must have FELT it...what lies on the other side of death...] U never know, there R ppl who despite being well educated/SPOKEn do "menial" jobs, then U have george bush, etc. I know aLady who has 2 UNIdegrees, is well read, speaks foreign languages coherently when not annoyed or rushing but wants 2work as a housekeeper in theUS rather than a publicService linguist 4 CUNTs in cUnt UK. 1:01 (mental)RAPE is WORST
everything is perfect about this film, fom the casting, music, screenplay, cinematography & most of all the direction by the genius 'Terrence Malick'.
Yeah a lot of it is perfect except for some of the dialogue. I would highly doubt a battle hardened soldier that is fighting on Guadalcanal would say some of the stuff they say. My grandpa was in the Navy and he would know I guess. This movie and Saving Private Ryan are tied for #1 on my list.
1. Saving Private Ryan
2. The Thin Red Line
3. Platoon
4. Glory
5 Black Hawk Down
Pearl Harbor and Wind Talkers were utter pieces of shit.
I'd believe that. But I think realism wasn't Malick's primary motivation; I think the characters are meant to be 'types', like characters from a Dostoevsky novel (although nowhere nearly as developed) .
By the way, how does this compare with Saving Private Ryan in realism?
he never saw it. i could barely get him to see this. he died shortly after this film came out. i do recall seeing two veterans of d-day interviewed on the history channel about "ryan" and they said the invasion scenes weren't accurate enough. they both said it was worse!
I agree AchillesShield, Malick's goal for this film was to tell a fictional (but based on true events) epic poem with flawed but understandable characters, rather than depicting soldiers as the typical over-the-top patriot ready to fight.
That's why I love this film; you have trash like GI Joe cartoons where the soldiers are all gung-ho and roid'ed up for combat. In reality, soldiers are scared shitless before any kind of skirmish.
my father said that the men he served with cared about two things: survival and going home. he said the characters in this movie sounded more like philosophy majors than soldiers. I told him that their dialogue was hollywood "poetic license." he just scoffed. he wasn't a huge movie fan.
The soldiers may not have TALKED like this, but they must have FELT it... what lies on the other side of death, the purpose of the war, the business of killing a man. These are philosophical questions you try to push aside when you're out there fighting and trying to survive. But in the quiet of night in their tents, just before they went to sleep, they must have thought about it.
The one with lyrics? It's called Jisas Yu Holem Hand Blong Mi [Jesus, You Hold My Hands], it's not in the official motion picture soundtrack (pity..), but it is in the Melanesian Choir soundtrack.
This movie is great, too bad it didnt get that many viewers. This movie came out during the time when saving private came out, so it was overshadowed by it. They are both powerful and inspirational war movies
The Thin Red Line is so much better than Saving Private Ryan. Saving Private Ryan shows the reality and brutalism of war in pictures, The Thin Red Line describes it in words in a philosophical way, that makes the movie to one of the best ever made. Saving Private Ryan is more for the mainstream. The Thin Red Line is a movie, that has got a longer and more powerful message than Saving Private Ryan. Hope u understand my english^^ greetz from germany
I dont't like this film, it's true

The scope of this film is unbelievable; so much conveyed in terms of conflict, life continuum, futility, reason.

That girl the guy's making out with at 2:04 is Miranda Otto. She's in Lord of the Rings.

wow, what a cast.

everything is perfect about this film, fom the casting, music, screenplay, cinematography & most of all the direction by the genius 'Terrence Malick'.
SuperMusicLover77 2 years ago 29
so true, this is literally a work of art.
BboyDarknessGambler 2 years ago 2
Yeah a lot of it is perfect except for some of the dialogue. I would highly doubt a battle hardened soldier that is fighting on Guadalcanal would say some of the stuff they say. My grandpa was in the Navy and he would know I guess. This movie and Saving Private Ryan are tied for #1 on my list.
1. Saving Private Ryan
2. The Thin Red Line
3. Platoon
4. Glory
5 Black Hawk Down
Pearl Harbor and Wind Talkers were utter pieces of shit.

You are right "Pearl Harbor and Wind Talkers were utter pieces of shit", but Wind talkers was still better than Pearl Harbor.

I still think Saving Private Ryan, is one of my favorite war movies.

Well, at least it tackled a forgotten unexplored part of WWII history. But yeah, honestly, WT and PH were travesties of the worst kind...

my father was at guadalcanal and he told me none of the soldiers at that battle spoke like any of the characters in this movie.
owg59 2 years ago
I'd believe that. But I think realism wasn't Malick's primary motivation; I think the characters are meant to be 'types', like characters from a Dostoevsky novel (although nowhere nearly as developed) .
By the way, how does this compare with Saving Private Ryan in realism?
AchillesShield 2 years ago
he never saw it. i could barely get him to see this. he died shortly after this film came out. i do recall seeing two veterans of d-day interviewed on the history channel about "ryan" and they said the invasion scenes weren't accurate enough. they both said it was worse!
owg59 2 years ago
where was that at? i wanna see them say that and i do belive that
austin6229 2 years ago
I agree AchillesShield, Malick's goal for this film was to tell a fictional (but based on true events) epic poem with flawed but understandable characters, rather than depicting soldiers as the typical over-the-top patriot ready to fight.
That's why I love this film; you have trash like GI Joe cartoons where the soldiers are all gung-ho and roid'ed up for combat. In reality, soldiers are scared shitless before any kind of skirmish.
lpjuunin 2 years ago
@lpjuunin Also GI joes never die without coming back. WTF?

@AchillesShield it wasnt his intention but is was very realistic

my father said that the men he served with cared about two things: survival and going home. he said the characters in this movie sounded more like philosophy majors than soldiers. I told him that their dialogue was hollywood "poetic license." he just scoffed. he wasn't a huge movie fan.
owg59 2 years ago
i do notice the poetic side of the movies which i hate the hollywood side of it oh well -god bless

If you have such a short attention span and can't sit still unless something explosive is going on, perhaps you shouldn't be watching these films.

This movie is great, too bad it didnt get that many viewers. This movie came out during the time when saving private came out, so it was overshadowed by it. They are both powerful and inspirational war movies
MajinBoo321 2 years ago 2
The Thin Red Line is so much better than Saving Private Ryan. Saving Private Ryan shows the reality and brutalism of war in pictures, The Thin Red Line describes it in words in a philosophical way, that makes the movie to one of the best ever made. Saving Private Ryan is more for the mainstream. The Thin Red Line is a movie, that has got a longer and more powerful message than Saving Private Ryan. Hope u understand my english^^ greetz from germany
