  • That has to be one of the best sounds in the world. A B17!

  • My great uncle flew a B-17...it cauught on fire and Nazis were in it...so he tried to put out the fire while trying to fight them off...but he didnt make it...he was only 23

  • From an aesthetic viewpoint, I've always preferred the B-17 E and F over the G model. I would die to see a flying B-17 D, though!

  • Is this the Memphis belle?

  • @biobob16

As it says in the drop-down menu video description introduction:

The B-17 in THIS video is B-17G, tail no. 44-83546, owned by the estate of the late David Tallichet, who passed away in November 2007. Flies as B-17F, tail no. 124485, Memphis Belle Replica.

  • There is still power, here.

  • Best B-17 Ever!!!!

  • i have a t-shirt with this plane =). B17 is awesome machine, greetings from Russia

  • No,this is not the Memphis Belle. The Memphis Belle is undergoing severe reconstruction to be put in the Smithsonian Air Mueseum.

  • 2:17 - 2:24 is some a+ audio. I know it's all good. But I especially like that clip. Pratt Whitney, or a Wright. Both sound great.

  • piece of history

  • Is it actually possible to love an machine? I don't know, but I do know I love this ole bird! The B17 Flying Fortress. She is the most beautiful plane ever built. We owe our freedom and liberty to the men who strapped themselves in her and flew into Nazi Germany.

  • For the record, the B-17 that was destroyed making an emergency landing in Illinois on June 13, 2011 WAS NOT this aircraft. The one in question was the "Liberty Belle", flown by the Liberty Foundation.

  • classic aircraft!

  • No other sound like it. When the collings foundation brings their 17 to the bay area I know when its here simply because I can hear that sound from miles away

  • I went inside this plane like ten years ago, pretty awesome!

  • Comment removed

  • my gandpa was a bomberdeir (mis-spell?) and got shot down on the 7th or 9th mission. broke knee and ankle and starved in Salag Luft III for 1 and a half years. he is still alive today! :D

  • wait, is it, or is it not, memphis belle?

  • @AceX213

Read the introduction in the drop down menu below the video

  • BEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE SEEEEEEVUHNTEEEEEEEEEHN BAAAAAAWWLLMER!

  • its so strange to see such a large aircraft taking off on the grass hehe. i know its ment to its just strange to me =)

  • have a look at my video response, it's the tribute to the B-17 and 8th Air Force :)

  • Love B-17's, also like Memphis Belle

  • That is SICK!

  • my grandpa was top gunner and flight engineer of these :)

  • I knew a guy (forgot his name) that was a ball turret gunner he said it was scary as hell to be in it.

  • @Shuvza So I have been told by others, and yet they went out again and again because it had to be done. We owe them a great deal of gratitude. Sadly the WWII vets are dieing off at an alarming rate. I fear we will soon have only a handful left.

  • @donteverlietome i understand this it is sad we are losing these men that fought for our freedoms.

  • Beautiful. My departed friend Johnny was a flight engineer on the Miss America - he would have loved this video.

  • When I was in Galveston just this last weekend, saw a B-17 fly-by twice when I was at the beach. I know it came from the Military aircraft museum. I have seen it before in the hangar there, but didn't realize it was airworthy.

  • I got some airshow videos with up to 10 B-17s and 1 libator at my airshow it was super cool Memphis belle is awesome with the Yankee lady as well. =)

  • why they use 1200 horsepower? they should give it more powerfull engines like the b-29...

  • A local airshow I was at about 15 years ago had a B-17G and B-24. I won a raffle to go on a hour long flight on the B-24, I was slightly (very slightly) bummed that it wasn't the B-17, I was only about 14 or 15 at the time. So I asked the men in charge if I could fly in the B-17 instead since it was my favorite plane and they were more than happy to oblige. Word to the wise, if you want to stick your camera out of the top radio room hatch in flight to take a picture, grip the camera TIGHTLY ;)

  • Fantastic video. It says 2006, but I thought the real Memphis Bell was being restored? Is this a B-17F Memphis Belle replica?

  • @nerdsfn

That's correct. See the video description in the drop down window for the full story

  • @nerdsfn This is not the original Memphis Belle, she is undergoing restoration in Ohio I believe, This B-17 is actually a 'G' model less the chin turret. This was one of 5- 17s sent to England to film the Memphis Belle movie.

  • @nerdsfn It was but It can not fly again.

  • dougalmac54 just a bug in your ear great friend, the actual B-17 "Memphis Belle " was an "F" model with the two nose guns actually mounted in the glass canopy of the nose of the aircraft immediately in front of where the bomb sight was located... Hope that helps your analogy of this plane. So this one probably was either a D or E model ie no guns in the glass canopy of the bombadiers position either.

  • Nothing like that sound! Great footage.

  • Hmmmmmmmmmmmmm lets see a few facts and figures the B-17 was powered by 4 Wright-Cyclone engines each capable of 1200 horsepower. Wing span was 102 feet plus a few inches. The G model had 13 guns for defense not just 10, and of all of the sorties that were flown in WW II, the total number of loses only amounted to a little over 6%. Daylight precision bombing was a great plan, and this aircraft was once voted the best bomber ever built.

  • Just the sound of it gives me the creeps.

Imagine hearing one flying above your house in times of war... makes you shit your pants.

  • Belle trivia. The girl on the Belle's nose art should have on a red bathing suit on the pilot side and a blue bathing suit on the copilot side.

  • @srkwixdraw nope you're wrong. Blue on captain's side and red on the copilot's side.

  • everyone should know this is not the actual Belle... that plane is on display at a USAF museum in Ohio after the city of Memphis set it rot outside for over 50 years, so USAF took it back. As the video says, this is another plane with the Belle's markings.

  • bulletman100 you got a point thats copy right because the real memphis belle logo is cursive and the girl on nose has a red dress on it

  • BEEEE SEVENTEEN BAULLLMER!!!

  • Those B-17's were awesome, some of them could fly back to base even after taking major hits by the enemy. Thanks, Boeing, for creating a LEGEND.

  • 747400fan Long Live The Memphis Belle

  • I've often thought of the RAF bomber raids at night but these men didn't give up the day job not one bit

  • I wish the pilots of the commercial jets I'm on could make such beautiful landings.

  • And just think no computers to help them land! This all pride!

  • This B-17, real serial number 44-83546 first was converted to a CB-17G and then to a VB-17G. It was sold on the civilian market as an aerial tanker registered as N3703G. It WAS restored as a B-17F and was used in 1989 in the movie "Memphis Belle".

  • I recently heard there is video of a B-17G flying along side a B-52H. If this is true does anyone know where I can find it?

  • I did a quick google search and couldn't find anything like that online. But if footage of that does exist, I'd really like to see it too!

  • I found a photo (though I don't know where I found it) of a Fortress flying next to a Buff but I can't tell if its photo shopped or not.

  • Does anyone know if these are available for FSX? And if so, where to download it?

  • beautiful aircraft. awesome sound

  • I thought that the B-17G had the "chin" turret up front? Is it possible this is a D or E model?

  • No, it's a G model that has been modified to resemble an F model. The original "Memphis Belle" was an F model.

  • what became of "Fuddy Duddy"?

  • B-17G Fuddy Duddy is owned by a General William Lyon (USAF retired), of Southern California. As of a couple of years ago, the aircraft was kept at Martin Aviation at John Wayne Airport in Orange County, California.

  • I could swear that Fuddy Duddy (297400) was sold to Kevin Weeks..it was supposed to go to AAM in Farmingdale but for some reason that deal fell out.

  • you are right...the g model has a chin turret...this one has no chin turret. the belle was an f model.

  • D has a shark fin tail and no tail or upper pwer turret ..E has a framed plexi nose..the D and E have narrower props and longer cowlings...

  • damn i luv deez

  • is it possible fo one off those to go off an air craft carrier

  • I highly doubt it. It weighed almost 33 tons and a wingspan of about 104 feet. In DoLittle's raid the b-25's could barely get off of the deck and a b-17 weighs almost twice as much as a b-25. You would need to line up two+ carriers together and then launch 'em.

  • If it had minimum weight and strong headwind? Flaps 1st notch, full power, brake release, flaps at 3rd notch as it leaves the deck.

  • Watch that right wingtip as you pass the island. ; )

  • Forgot about that. Tiny mistake.

  • yea

  • No it is NOT possible. The B-17 had a wing span of 103 ft. 9 in. The B-25's were done special for the Doolittle Raids.

  • Of an aircraft carrier? not in a million years lol.... in reality that is... I'm sure you can is some flight sim. They BARELY got a B-25 off of a carrier.

  • On a Modern Carrier Yeah, they launch plans of similar size on occasion. On a WWII Era Carrier.... Probably not.

  • Comment removed

  • The Sound is the best

  • i love the flying fortress! more than the superfortress... this is such a rugged and tough-as-nails bomber...

  • Beautiful! I love this plane so much. My grandpa flew over 35 missions over Europe in one of these in WWII. He was a ball turret gunner.

    Great footage! Thanks for sharing!

  • My dad who saw them "realtime" during the war on their way to Germany, got the shivers every time he heard one for the rest of his life....

    I know why.....

  • my grandpa flew these there so cool .....

  • Quel bel avion.

  • well your grandpa lost

  • my grandpa flew these

  • @martin408sanjose thank your grandpa for me,if it wase'nt for men like him we'd be speaking german.

  • @martin408sanjose so did my grandpa

  • Timeless beauty

  • This is the "Memphis Belle" that flew in the 1990's film. It was owned by the late David Tallechet, God rest his soul. He put it all into his warbirds for all of us to enjoy. He is now having a cold one with the original Memphis Belle pilot, the late Col Robert Morgan. Many of you don't know that after the belle came back for a bond tour, Morgan was given a choice of several more safe jobs. He chose to fly B-29's, and flew another 25 missions to Japan in the famous Dauntless Dotty.

    Heroes!

  • An American Beauty, from tail to nose

  • you know, it's always great to see comments like this, to know that people know history and what they are talking instead of the idiots who just bas each other about what new dress brittany spears bought.

  • Absolutely the best looking bomber of the WWII Era. Simply beautiful

  • I do not know much about the war, and I am not claiming to. HOWEVER, I do know this much, and that is my Grandpa flew the B-17 for 25 missions, and that factory, excuse the spelling, in Germany called "Schein.something

, where it WAS a suprise attack on the Germans, but most planes had to go back to Britain or on to Africa.

My Grandpa was ordered to go BACK to that factory a SECOND time, with the Nazis fully aware of attack. He was under orders to finish it off.

    HEROES. All of them.

    Heroes.

  • That was the town of Schweinfurt, the location of a large ball-bearing factory vital to Germany's war effort.

  • she's an absolute beauty

  • I toured through that same plane at Willow Run airport here in Michigan

  • Gee this old baby sounds good.

  • good vid an easily spotted knock-off of the real memphis belle... the real 1 is being restored in Dayton,OH

  • Mabye you are right-how can you tell>? I am ovviously an amateur-but something about the nose being a dead giveaway is what my husband said might be why you said it is a knock-off-

Let me know...Still, those guys werer f'in heroes-straight up and down!-RIP GRAMPA

  • you can tell because the womans dress on the real memphis belle is red

  • Dress on real Memphis Belle "Petty Girl" is red on one side, blue on the other - just like the hubs on the front wheels. It enables instant recognition of whether you are on right or left side of plane on the ground or in air. Read Capt. Morgan's autobiography for his commentary.

  • you can also tell because it does not have the nme in big lettering

  • ah, it's beautiful!

  • My Grandpa flew a B-17-He never talked about it until he got some dementia before he died-never posted metals, stars, oak cluster things, nothin like that-25 missions over Germany and the English Channel-why do you suppose WW2 veterans never talk about the war?

  • Well considering what happened to my grandfather in Italy it shouldn't be a surprise. A friend of his left the safe spot they were in for some reason, only to be blown apart by German artillery. He fought at Anzio and Monte Cassino. And he was in the March into Rome. Sorry for moving away from the subject guys. This is one of my two favorite bombers from World War 2. I remember seeing one called the Thunderbird at an airshow back in 2000. Great plane.
  • simply amazing. Pure American Horsepower

  • Boeing. Tradition of victory...

  • beautiful

  • They will always always sound GREAT..Tear

  • how much do you think it costs a year to keep that baby in the air?

  • $3,000/flight. These airplanes are not cheap to fly.!!

  • That's pure American inflation! Gas,OIL, maintnence, etc-still worth it though!~history-if we do not remember it-we are all dooomed to repeat it!

  • that low hum of the engines as it passes is awesome

  • Very cool video

  • i flew on this on monday. It was the best flight i have ever been on.

  • Lucky bastard!I've always wanted to ride in a 17,but i may have one up on you,i rode in a Mustang back in the late 70's.

  • haha lol

  • yer well dnt matter. its still history take pride in what we got from history. still nice to see things like this still in the air and sound is great.

  • This A/C is currently on our ramp at Atlantic Aviation here in Cleveland , OH . While the original is in Dayton , Oh being restored , this B-17 flies in it's honor . I've asked some of the crew about this particular A/C , and it does share some of the Memphis Belle's original parts , but mainly has 3-4 different B-17's parts . I'm taking my 4 year old son & GF to see her tonight and take some decent pics of it .

  • that is the most amazing, awesome, and simply beautiful aircraft EVER to come out of the USA. That thing could withstand anything the nazi's threw at it.

  • buddy it is memphis i saw it i even saw 3 of the crew

  • a B-17 landed about 20min from my town. her name was "Sentimental Journey" it was a beautiful plane

  • In every aspect, how can you not love the B-17?

  • No I'm pretty sure the Belle at Duxford is a replica. Actually its a G model not an F. The real Belle is still around somewhere though. Dayton Ohio museum maybe.

  • the original memphis bell is at duxford in it? cos if not its is a replica

  • the "original" "Memphis Belle", B-17F, tail no. 41-24485, is currently under restoration at the National Museum of the United States Air Force.

Both this, and the B-17 at Duxford wear the "Memphis Belle" nose art and markings, but aren't the actual "Memphis Belle"

  • they played the memphis belle in the movie.

  • This brings back memories. I used to work for Mr. Tallichet in the early 80's. He would come flying this plane himself landing at the Torrance airport by one of his restaurants called Doolittle's Raiders. Very loud start up

  • was this also called flying fortress?

  • That is correct, sir!

  • a b-17 flew over my house yesterday :)

  • yeah me to, it was pretty cool...I take it you live in rapid city?

  • lol no, i live in in oregon, but they were having an airshow of some sort yesterday

  • sorry big coincidence. same day, same plane with the name of my city in your name (rapid) but anyways they are awesome planes

  • Big, Bold, Beautiful. A symphonic masterpiece with those engines.

  • Hey, I was just noticing that you said this was a B-17G. It looks more like the B-17F being that it is lacking the Chin Turret.

  • The chin turret was removed because it is supposed to represent an F model, which "Memphis Belle" was.

  • which one is more beautiful; Avro Lancaster or Boeing B-17? I think both war birds are beautiful.

  • dude, the B-17 ALL THE WAY!!!!!! sleek bird. Love 'em!

  • This is Sally B and its flown over my house a few times, i've also seen it at Biggin Hill Air Show and been inside her on the ground

  • Sorry, that's not correct.

This video ISN'T of the Sally B, B-17G, tail no. 44-85784, which is in Duxford.

The B-17 in THIS video is B-17G, tail no. 44-83546, owned by the estate of the late David Tallichet, who passed away in November 2007. It flies as 124485, Memphis Belle Replica, currently residing in the 1941 Historic Aircraft Group hangar in Geneseo, NY.

"Sally B" wore several paint schemes for the 1990 film, "Memphis Belle" including the Memphis Belle nose art, which it still retains

  • my great grandfather was a teacher for peopleto be a gunny for the blister on the bottom of the plane

  • Mi avion favorito !!!

  • Now imagine a few hundred flying over in formation all at once! You'd have a woody all day long.

  • You can feel the power of those engines from those flyby's, It definetly puts the "Heavy" in heavy bomber!

  • I LIKE

  • In the USAF they flew 25 missions and got to go home. In the RAF they flew 30 and then got to go on leave before continuing flying until they were killed or the war ended!!! RAF bomber command was the most dangerous place to be in the war apart from a German U-Boat

  • That was in the early part of the campaign. It soon changed to 30 for the yanks too.

  • Great footage, I never would have gotten to see this if it wasn't for YouTube. Thanks for posting.

  • what a beautiful plane

  • Radial piston engines. A sweeter sound simply does not exist!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Boy r u right. Harley comes close.

  • This thing actually had me fooled until I saw the bombardier/navigator windows were wrong for the real Memphis Belle! Got the old tail turret and everything. A very good likeness!

  • It would be awsome if it were escorted by some P-51 Mustangs or P-47 Lightnings , and maybe even some spitfires!

  • is this the memphis belle?

  • Sally B alias Memphis Belle

    What a beautiful old warbird

  • This video ISN'T of the Sally B, B-17G, tail no. 44-85784, which is in Duxford.

The B-17 in THIS video is B-17G, tail no. 44-83546, owned by the estate of the late David Tallichet, who passed away in November 2007. It flies as 124485, Memphis Belle Replica. Currently, it is residing in the 1941 Historic Aircraft Group hangar in Geneseo, NY.

The "real" Memphis Belle", B-17F, tail no. 41-24485, Memphis Belle, is currently under restoration at the National Museum of the United States Air Force.

  • Hello propfan2k

    I stand corrected

  • Hello propfan2k

Sorry about that friend, I stand corrected

  • No problem, honest mistake.

For the 1990 film, "Memphis Belle" (the new version) "Sally B" wore several paint schemes including the Belle herself. Then the Belle nose art was painted on her both cheeks! Now it has its original "Sally B" artwork on the left nose.

    Carry on, chaps.

  • no but you can dream it is :)

  • that sound was amazing, every time it flew by it just gave me goosebumps, i feel so lucky to have seen one of these flying for real(at Duxford, in the UK)

  • That is breath taking!

  • man i can just imagine sitting in berlin and hearing one of these monsters drop a pretty payload. mist be shocking

  • most amazing sound - truely awesome

  • Amazing short take off and landing. Can't believe how this plane can just sneak in real slow.

  • Hey, did anyone else download this from avsim? I got it, it's so fast, good STOL performance, and excellent sound.

  • Propfan2k you really posted some great stuff here....full marks to you! 5* indeed. It may be of interest to you that we have a "only intact" submersed B17 bomber film coming out on YouTube very soon (end of Feb). Please send me a message via our film channel and please keep up the good work! Best wishes, Mike C

  • I am lucky! My dad had 51 missions with the 305th in Chelveston. We bought him his 52nd. We flew in The Aluminum Overcast at Waukegan Airport {EAA}. If you think those Pratt& Whitneys sound beautiful on the ground, buy yourself a flight with the EAA! It is worth every penny!!!

  • The B-17G is powered by four 1,200-horsepower Wright Cyclone Model R-1820-97 engines. (Not Pratt & Whitney's) These engines are nine cylinder, radial, air-cooled type with a 16:9 gear ratio. The propellers are three-bladed Hamilton Standard propellers, 11 feet, 7 inches in diameter.

  • i have this plane...

  • Awesome sound. Truly. Yet I prefer the sleek purr of a Merlin.

  • 12 O'clock high

  • just listen to that baby purr!!!

  • I have had a B-17 fly over me once, and it was the most magical moment of the life. Her engines purred the most beautiful sound, even the smell of the exhaust had its own unique and wonderful aroma. If anyone ever gets a chance in your life to see one of these beutiful birds in flight. I even met the pilot of the Memphis Belle.

  • I was an extra in the movie made about the memphis belle filmed in england. it was amazing to see how it was all filmed and organised. I met most of the stars of the film including Harry Connick jnr., John Lithgow, Matthew Modine and Sean Astin. Amazing few days

  • Just for your own knowledge, the "Memphis Belle" was NOT the 1st B-17 to complete 25 missions as the history books may state. Infact it was B-17F 'Hells Angels' of the 358th BS based at Molesworth. The reason for the Belle getting the honour was that those incharge of US PR didn't think the name "Hells Angels" was appropriate for US Properganda back home at the time. So "Hells Angels" was dropped in favour of the Belle when she completed her 25 missions just a sort time later.

  • noenwarrior ya um that plane was used in that movie you liked so much. lol. so loVE it!
