  • The real answer is 0. 5 is older then 0 and the question is what is the youngest age, and the law forbides for children from 5 to 18...

  • @nibed123 No, because it is illegal for an under 5 to be given alcohol at all. That was in another QI, and is because they used to use alcohol on dummys to help/make babies and toddlers sleep. So 0-5 no alcohol, 5-18 no consuming in the bar.

  • Stephen Fry, David Mitchell, Frankie Boyle and Jimmy Carr.

  • First i thought "YES!" because i'm going to London in about a month.

Then i remembered that it's with school and it's against the rules.....

    Darn it.

  • TheldaLouise You are right. Norwegian comedy sucks. Except Chuck Norris.

  • @IMNOGAYRU norwegian comedy isn't that bad, it's the american comedy you need to watch out for

  • @TheIdaLouise I can't say there is any REALLY funny comedy-shows on Norwegian television. But we are a small nation, maybe i just have to look harder :)

  • @TheIdaLouise americans still think its funny to put a pie in some ones face... american comedy is so dry.

  • @mm1k3y I dunno, man, "dry" might just be the LAST word I'd use to describe being covered in pie.

  • i wish i knew this when i was 5

  • lol Right then kids! To the pub!!!

  • I won't say that American or British comedy is particularly better than the other, each country has their gold just as well as their shit. That being said, America's shit is worse than Britain's shit (or at least they have a lot more of it- though it's seen more often in the form of reality tv), but my two favourite shows, Arrested Development and South Park, are written by Americans and fairly well respected as far as comedy goes.

  • @Maddolis don't forget George Carlin, Bill Maher, Jon Steward... =)

  • I just read on wikipedia that its illegal to buy liqueur chocolates under the age of 16...

    Thats hilarious!

  • a day after this was aired 56,000 primary school kids up and down the country were spotted getting smashed in beer gardens

  • Take the Ad off it BBC, isnt it enough you get TV license off us?

  • wtf is an advertisement doing on the bbc

  • wish i had known this when I was younger

  • Also In my State -Victoria a child can consume alcohol at a licensed premises with a meal provided they are with their parent or legal guardian but I think this is going to be reviewed (not many people are even aware of the rule).

  • As an Australian I have a couple of comments - we speak English but our dialect is Australian and even that is changing very rapidly with diverse immigration. Australians don't mind good comedy from either Britain or the US. Older Australians seem to prefer British as that is what they grew up with.egarding drinking age Australia has state based laws.

  • can i just say that i'm from norway and i think british comedy is the best comedy in the world

  • @TheIdaLouise Australian here and I agree

  • @TheIdaLouise I'm from Turkey and I too believe that too. In addition to that I think that people like Fry, Geravis, Webb are one of the most intellectual people I've ever seen in my life. You lucky Brits =) Greetings from İstanbul

  • @TheIdaLouise As a Swede I confirm this.

  • has anybody put this to the test?

Lol, I can imagine someone being refused the sale, then wacking there phone out to watch this clip.

  • Putting paint on a wall and watching it dry > American Comedy

  • Well, I'm off to the local pub garden.

  • ok im confused joker, americans invented the english language???? i think the clue of who invented the language is in its name dont you think lol so by your reckoning nobody spoke english before the 18th century??? im not sure about that

  • @JOKER51115 lol get educated

  • @JOKER51115 omfg! that is THE dumbest comment I have EVER seen.

  • @JOKER51115 Lol this made me laugh but at the same time makes me worry for mankind.

  • @JOKER51115 You have no hope in life...

  • @JOKER51115 I'm bilingual. I can speak English, American and Australian.... you sir are either extremely 'special' or just trying to provoke which is also, very 'special.'

  • @jemworld Are you being serious? English is the language, American and Australian are both accents.

  • @MadCowpat No, American English is a Bastard Child of Standard English.

  • @Orberror404 It's an accent nonetheless.

  • @MadCowpat Color, favorite? It isn't an accent, arguably it's a different language.

  • @Orberror404 They spell a couple of words differently..wooptydoo. American and Australian are still accents.

  • @MadCowpat And the only reason they spell those words differently is because of their accent.

  • @MadCowpat Not just a few words; and actually, the only reason they speak differently is because they spell the works differently. Rather than visa versa. Technically, it's a dialect; which is closer to another language than another accent.

  • @Orberror404 I give in :) You win. Although I still hold my ground about Australians :)

  • @MadCowpat lol you said that to yourself... anyway as you were

  • @legendLilLew Only because I added it on to what I had said before. Thanks for bringing me back to this video though!

  • @MadCowpat ha no problem!

  • @JOKER51115 If this is what your being taught I weep for the future American generations.

  • Brits- hilarious

    Americans- assholes, apparently

Well, guess it's time to move.

  • I love both American and British comedy and I'm from the states...although I do live nearby New England so does that make the difference?

  • I'm starting to get really irritated by the fact that I've watched 5 videos in a row and had to sit through annoying bloody ads on each of them =.= jus sayin, youtube

  • I love British humor!

  • Isnt it weird the way Americans think American comedy is better, and Brits think British comedy is better? Its as though it has something to do with the way we are brought up.

  • rrrright so why does a restaurant always refuse under 18s alcohol even though you are by law allowed it with a MEAL

  • @weatherallc05 the law allows it, but if you own a restaurant you can still set your own rules, and the law also says they can refuse service to anyone.

  • @j0shissocoollike meh, i would feel like crap if i got refused. they just dont trust any1

  • @weatherallc05 Because they don't know the law.

  • 5 years old is the legal age in your own house, the absolute minimum age in this country

  • 12 if you met 'em on the internet :P

  • @ruthio1

Learn to spell before you try to make a pointless point, please.

  • @martymidget15 lol called a typo i got stuff to do lmao. not caring about punctuation and having intelligence are 2 different things lol Plus im right. I know this is as intelectual as it gets for u mate but I ll leave my corrct spelling for my university degree LMAO. That idiot dissed brits then he was owned by urs truely and u should keep shut or i ll do the same to u hahahahaha

  • laws been changed, sorry guys

  • If you saw the QI Klaxon papers, I wish someone made one where you can type the wrong answer and the sound.

  • The thing scans the paper to make the klaxon go off. If you had the klaxon in Tesco, who will be frightened.

  • so you cant buy the drink until your 18...but you can drink it?

  • I'm going to echo the sentiments of my top commenting compatriots, and even dare to go several steps further.

American television is absolutely awful. I had thought such was the best I could expect, but british tv has taught me how horribly wrong this is. Apparently the issue is simply that american producers have absolutely no desire to try.

  • British Comedy > American Comedy

  • @iamXSTEALTHZX

most british comedy > modern american mainstream comedy

However in past decades america had a little more pride and produced some wonderful things, and if you can filter through the crap you can still find brilliant stuff from time to time. So please, no disrespectful generalizations.

  • @waldoman7 'disrespectful'? I wouldn't say someone with the opinion that British Comedy is better than American Comedy is disrespectful. If he'd said 'American comedy is ****' then yeh, I'd agree :)

  • @jemworld

you take my post a bit too seriously.

  • @waldoman7 its not a disrespectful generalization at all its an opinion you moron

  • @riamu09 A generalised opinion, you moron!

    :P

  • @iamXSTEALTHZX Au contraire! In an International poll, American media was voted the funniest in the world. The funniest in Europe was Spain. Britain ranks a dismal #7, below even France, and were voted, "Not As Funny As They Think They Are."

  • @ThaMahstah that is funny because my opinion is the only one that matters

  • @ThaMahstah American Comedy is only voted the best because they have the most worldwide media

  • @ThaMahstah That's because America has 300 million people in it...British comedy only is shown in Brtiain, while American comedy is shown everywhere. American comedy is nowhere near as funny as Brtish comedy.

  • @MegaBlueZOMBIE Ah, but if American comedy was bad, its international reach would provoke international condemnation. XD

  • @ThaMahstah It does. Everybody outside of America says the vast majority of America comedy shows are shit, and they always copy off British shows anyways, like the office.

  • @MegaBlueZOMBIE The poll says otherwise.

  • @ThaMahstah Because 300 million people live in America therefore they have the majority of the votes...and also because British humour doesn't stretch to anywhere so they have never seen British humour so have nothing to compare it too.

  • @MegaBlueZOMBIE Actually, in the first place, you specifically could NOT vote for your own country.

Secondly, it was a 15 country poll, each country represented by exactly 2,000 voters.

    So there.

  • @ThaMahstah Of course you could vote for your own country you moron...if you live in the country where you find the comedy to be the funniest you would be allowed to vote there...now you are just lying.

  • @MegaBlueZOMBIE Uh, no, you couldn't. That was the rules. XD

Dude, look it up for yourself. The poll was by Badoo, a European website. And in any case, that doesn't discount that the voters were spread out evenly among the nationalities, not dominated by Americans.

  • @ThaMahstah "2,000 Badoo users from each of 15 nationalities were asked to pick from a list of 15 nationalities. Other nationalities in the list from which respondents picked were: German, Polish, Argentinian, Canadian and Turkish." So you could pick your own country...Plus if you look at the countries you can see that it is flawed, brazil, france, russia etc. They would not be on the list if they didn't vote for themselves, and as I said, British comedy is limited to Britain only.

  • @MegaBlueZOMBIE Ah, except for this:

"Which nationality — excluding your own — do you feel is the funniest and/or best at making people laugh?"

    So there you go.

"Plus if you look at the countries you can see that it is flawed, brazil, france, russia etc. They would not be on the list if they didn't vote for themselves."

    Now you're just being silly.

In any case, even if they WERE allowed to vote for themselves, each nation gets 2000 voters. America has no "majority."

  • @iamXSTEALTHZX The British has the best Stand-up/Panel shows the Americans provided the better sitcoms it all balances out.

  • @iamXSTEALTHZX Fawlty Towers, Black Adder, Mr Bean, Monty Python in general, The Office, the list goes on...

  • False, its a loophole - yes as young as five years old in a pub garden, however it is illegal for a adult to purchase alcholo for a minnor..

  • @luketrials I have had many a drinks brought for me in restaurants since I was 11/12. Ok not that many maybe one or two a year. I went to america when I was 18 and tried to do the same but they wouldn't let me.

  • @luketrials There is a loophole for that too though :)

No one under the age of 16 is classed as a minor they are classed as a young adult :)

Actually I think it's younger then that though aswell :P

  • @luketrials Incorrect. It depends where the alcohol is being consumed.

  • I should have watched this before that party at easter!!!!! I could have got served afterall......

  • If you want an entertaining way to watch the conflicts between countries watch (or read) Hetalia: Axis Powers....its stereotypical of most counties but is hilarious aswell (i advise watching the dubbed version, its alot more comical).

I'm both american and english, so why are we fighting.......we have a 'special relationship' , which is an actual political term between our two countries XD!!!

I'm just hoping now I've mentioned APH people will watch it and laugh at both england and america!

  • obviously this is also at the discretion of the owner of the establishment too, as I doubt most of them would allow it anyhow

  • If it is only illegal for children ages 5-18 to consume alcohol in a bar, and that children 5 and older can drink in beer gardens and restaurants if an adult/parent buys it for them, does that mean that a child 4 and under can drink wherever they choose whether it be a beer garden, bar, or restuarant? Does this also mean that toddlers can purchase drinks without adult supervision????

  • @rainey53 as farfetched as that sounds, that is a very very good point

  • this show contains some knowledge = Americans don't understand it

  • God, Sean Lock at 0:19 crossing the line again XD

  • .A disease is an abnormal condition affecting the body of an organism. A disorder is primarily used to identify physical disorders that are not caused by infectious organisms i.e Parkinsons Disease is infact a disorder.

  • @psychoticjanie Why's it not called Parkinson's Disorder then? That's just confusing.

  • There's women who smoke/drink while pregnant and then parents who subject their kids to a lifetime of passive smoking and giving a kid a drop of alcohol now and then is wrong? Lol you can responsibly give your kid a drink without getting them drunk and I think this big label on booze being bad will just back fire when the kids can drink legally. Binge drinking is already a problem in the UK.

  • @psychoticjanie I completly agree with you dude, i see no problem in it, mainly because pretty much all kids are the same they will bug you and bug you untill you give them a swig of your wine or beer and it brings there arse up to there elbows then they never wanna try it again lol.

then they hit 15-16 and ull see them in a park with a bottle of cider ¬_¬

  • I already knew that! God I wish I got to go on QI sometimes.

  • things i learned in the video: a child can drink in a resturont or beer garden from the age of 5

things i learn in the comment section: americans are dicks

  • @Daleksaresupreme1 Right, base your opinion of a country on YouTube comments.

  • @tjrieves just a joke

  • @Daleksaresupreme1 My comment was sarcasm

  • @tjrieves No it wasn't! But this one is. Brilliant, dear sir.

  • @Daleksaresupreme1 i think tjrieves has the wrong idea of when to use sarcasm.

  • @leredsock thanks for backing me up

  • I got told this by the schools alchol awarness people at school.. well i know what the class then said... soo are you gonna get a round in then.. :)

  • Wait now, its illegal for children betwixt 5 and 18 years old?

Then you can drink prior to that!

  • @Mullahgrrl no its legal.. just not at the bar... hell i can get around in and in and im bloody 15..

  • I wish they would do this show with guys like Marc Maron, Jimmy Pardo, and Paul F. Tompkins. Seriously, it would be so much fun to watch it down at the UCB.

  • The reason for the adverts is that this clip is presented by BBC Worldwide, the international commercial arm of the BBC which is *not* funded by the license fee. If you don't like ads, try the main BBC channel. Besides which, as Chromana says, if you're using an ad blocker (e.g. AdBlock Plus on Firefox or Chrome) you won't see any ads anyway :)

  • I had no idea there were ads on these videos until I read the comments. Are people really not able to install Adblock? Geez.

  • How does a child get a round in? Easy he nicks a twenty from his dads wallet.

  • @P2J6O8 i don't think it matters where the money comes from

  • @el6caballo6oscuro6 Dude, don't take peoples comments seriously.

  • what are the bbc playing at ????? they just do what they want don't they and still rip us off for tv licences and insist it's ever more necessary and they are unique in that they don't advertise ??? huh ? this is just wrong, isn't it ?

  • When did the BBC start advertising Sky?

  • FUCK OFF King Arthur

  • 0:01 to skip adverts

Even the BBC lie to us :( We pay our licence

  • @eddieoxford this is the internetz.

  • @eddieoxford ? This is worldservice, not BBC. World service advertises, or would you like to exclusively fund something you don't really get to use?

  • Just so people know, either this is wrong or the law has changed since this aired.

  • when i was typing this, somehow Google chrome found every "0" and "1" together that is on the internet.

Lets just say, the number destroyed my computer, and now im in a library

    Wait, that doesn't make sense

  • this is out of date. this law in the uk was changed years ago inline with licencing laws, it is also a very very tiny little loophole in the law, as it is illegal to buy alcohol for a minor and supply it to be drunk in a public place.. however.. there is another law that did state it was ok for a minor to drink alcohol with adult guidance in their home, which is considered to be "neglect" either way, loopholes are made fact by a tv show? well done bbc?

  • @daavedave You do realise that this episode is from 2003 right?

  • my last post is only relevant to the UK

  • A child of 5 can consume alcohol in a room / area that is specifically set aside for the service of food. At 16 in the same setting, they can purchase the alcohol from the bar that is designated for serving that area. At 16+ a person is allowed in a bar unaccompanied if not consuming alcohol, this is generally disallowed at licences digression as no publican wants to run a youth club. It is illegal for anyone, at home or else where for any person to give alcohol to a child under the age of 5

  • In america, Assuming you are with parents (or people posing as parents) i dont believe their is a minimum age. But once a child becomes an adult, (turns 18) its illegal for them to drink untill their 21st bday. some laws.

  • Stephen's use of the word CHILD should have been a giveaway for Alan.

  • When I was 5 my favourite tipple was navy rum.

  • So over 5 to drink

Over 18 to drink in a bar but in the garden you can do it from 5...

However you shoudnt buy for the U18 anyways

  • in Australia there is a $5000 fine for giving minors a drink anywhere

  • @ShadowReeves

In some States, perhaps. There is no national law as far as I know.

  • FUCK YES! BEFORE IT CAME ON ME AND MY MUM WERE ARGUING ABOUT IT AND I SAID 5! Whooooooo

  • In Romania the legal age which you can buy and drink alcohol in a bar/pub is 10 years old , give or take 2

  • Isn't it an offence to buy alcohol for people under 18 though?

  • Hahahaha

  • 0:47 - Amused

    0:50 - Concerned

    0:52 - Pedo

    0:54 - Scheming

    0:01 - Genius.

  • They use Straws

  • I swear, whenever somebody makes a comment on here like the '12 if you met them on the internet' stephen fry looks like he loses faith in humanity :L

  • Fuck all of you for turning these comments into a bitch-fest. Stephen Fry would shake his head at all of you.

  • @BigJackMcB Americans are stupid and I got ze pie chart that proves it...

    watch?v=fJuNgBkloFE

  • @VampirePrinc3 @VampirePrinc3 If you watch "Gernams are also NOT Stupid", they flat out explain how they faked those videos to prove why you should take them with a grain of sand. Some "pie chart", retard. You probably live with your mother; you know shit about the world.

  • This information would have been really useful to me 6 years ago

  • fntime: Trollololol lo-lol. By stroking your your own American e-peen throughout these comments you've made yourself look like a complete fag. That my boy, is irony.

"I'm an American, do you know what that means"

It means you were born in or emigrated to America, nothing else.

"we are the people who 'evolved' from you pricks"

Troll. Also the apple seems to not fall far from the tree.

"Americans, are twice what you guys are!"

Twice the heel and no mistake.

  • so a child (between 5 and 18) can drink alchohol anywhere ,except a bar, so long asa it's bought by an adult? cool.

also, it's technically still legal to shoot and kill a Welshman (such as myself D:) within the confines of Chester City walls between the hours of 7:00pm and 12:00am, so long as you use a longbow. it was allowed once a long time ago and presumably the law was never nullified... pls don't shoot me.

  • The Americans on here are really perpetuating the arrogant ignorant American stereotype! If you don't like us then don't watch our stuff - simple.

  • @Rachiejane1 please realize that these are mostly friendless teenagers on youtube, not representative of Americans in general. On behalf of my country, I'd like to say this show is great!

  • @Setzer Hey, I am a Friendless teenager, However I try not to be disrespectful and I love QI, (though I am not American)

  • @Setzer hmm. argumentation and logic. Rare from your country. Well put :) my respect for america increased. or rather, my BURNING HATRED FOR IT decreased slightly n.n the sound of progress!

  • @Setzer progress, another rare subject for your side of the globe.

  • @Setzer Well spoken my friend.

  • @Rachiejane1 yeah, it makes me feel bad... and I'm american. even so, i know a quality show when I see one, and this is the best. You Brits always have the best stuff...

  • @Rachiejane1 I am from NY and I have to say that after discovering many of the shows on BBC, I find them more enjoyable and on a higher level of intellectual standard than most American television shows. Stephen Fry is brilliant!

  • @williamwon07 respect

  • @williamwon07 You haven't seen East Enders then.

  • If it's illegal between 5-18 and the 5 year old can have that drink in teh garden doesnt that mean 18 is still illegal to buy it at the bar?

  • @PumpkinMelonJuice no - between 5 and 18, not including

  • I'm going to go get a five year old some shots!

  • Now i need to find a pub garden... and a consenting adult.

  • I challenge someone to go to a pub with a pack of scouts and buy them all a whisky...

  • @DdlyHeadshot I'm fucking tempted! I think that legally it has to be the parents or someone acting in loco parentis (the legal guardian). Not any old random paedophile-type thinking his luck's in.

  • stop arguin like a bunch a school girls over a fkn youtube vid

    <
