Brilliant movie! i saw this movie in theaters at 8 years old and left an impression on me, i realized who Cameron was even after i saw Aliens in theaters and became a fan of him.
Stan Winston was not involved with The Abyss. Being the intelligent artisan he was, he told Mr. Cameron that his request for these aliens was not possible at the time. I, like a moron, said: sure.
James Cameron's THE ABYSS is an amazing sci-fi action film. Did Stan Winston Studios also work on it since Jim has a knack with working with him on every film he does?
I think this was one of the early stages for CGI in this film. Great underwater aliens you guys built. :)
This is so cool Steve! I'm always looking to finf out and learn more about the art of rubber making :P This is without doubt the best resource - the work is stunning! How the hell do you NOT have an Oscar?
Wonderful for you to provide this channel Steve. Your Blade 2 coverage on the DVD was a wealth of information so these videos will be awesome to watch!
I've heard creature creators say similar things over the years, which underscores that it's more art than science, even with all the chemistry involved.
How much did it finally cost? (Or is that in the next installment?)
Steve, cool cool! I was wondering if you can explain your process for the NTI's look. What things did you try that did work?
I remember reading a while back that you tried to take a non (American) approach to your shops work...meaning not always best to sculpt it, mold it, cast it, paint it....can you explain? (i.e. plastic bags, inflatable stuff!!!)
Interesting. :D I have to admit, even with the problems you had with constructing the aliens, you definitely did what Mr. Cameron asked you to do: you created the most beautiful aliens I've ever seen in any film. It was a great job you did with them.

I had no idea those things were practical effects. All these years I just assumed they were CGI.

Don't remember how much it actually ended up costing. Gale Hurd, the producer, made me pay her back in blood.
