I love Elena, they choose her despite her accent cause shes so talented, i recomend to see her performance of Edit Piaff, Incredible and powerfull, her voice is really strong , her body is as tiny as Madonna but really powerfull voice. She is argentinean so tha's why to perform Evita is so special and unique for her.

she has a massive mouth... also the tempo seems far too slow and i really dont like elena's articulation of most of her words - she is switching between a dodgy spanish accent and an even dodgier english one... this sucks
@euphogirl96 Dodgy? The woman is from Argentina. Spanish is her first language. I can see where there might be a prob with the diction but frankly I like her performance as much as I like Julie Covington's.
Y mas exceso me parece la forma que eligieron para representarla en esta obra que la verdad deja mucho que desear al igual que la pelicula. Errores historicos terribles y cada dos por tres( y no estoy hablando de cuestiones subjetivas) ...pero bueno por suerte hay diversidad de opinion y por lo menos podemos darnos el gusto de verla a Elena sobre el escenario,mas alla de lo que haga, con esta musica que tambien hay que reconocer es muy buena.

I had the chance to see her in Buenos Aires when she did Mina Che cosa sei (singing in italian, really recommend to search for Io vivro senza te by Elena), I also saw her in Evita and Piaf, I heard her in diferent parts and I can tell she is just amazing. Don´t know much about Patti, but I saw Elaine Page in Evita and in Piaf, and really she wasn´t as good as Elena. Just my opinion ;)

I agree. I just don't think Elena Roger will play well on Broadway. People are used to Lapone quality vocals and Rogers is not nearly as strong. I think we need to not bash Madonna. She is a pop star who took on a BIG role in Eva Peron and did a good job for someone with little experience. She also sold movie tickets, which was the goal. She wanted the role, the fought for it and you really need to give Madonna a A- for effort.

Listen to Julie Covington on the original Evita LP from 1974 - she also pronounced it correctly, and she's English! She was also the best singer of all the Evitas...

Love the way she pronounces Florida, Corrientes, 9 de Julio, she really feels those emblematic streets. That´s something you will never get from Patti, Elaine, or even Madonna. When Elena sings "beautiful town I love you" is 100% believable. :)

But i was lucky enough to see the show live in London and this really doesn't do elena any credit or the cast. it was simply amazing. and she has the most amazing stage pressance. the revival really was breath taking.
live theatre is far different than a movie. when you are on stage, you don't get retouched every five minutes, you don't get to do a double or triple take and you are constantly ON... she is fabulous. you cannot compare apples to oranges. or soundmixers and cameras to live theatre.

The best Evita I've seen on Youtube. Better than Patti Lupone even. I just believe this woman to be Hispanic. I've grown up in a Hispanic household my entire life, and this song made me dance like any version of this song should do and to be quite honest, neither Patti's nor Madonna's did it for me.
i agree (Madonna embodied the role, but with a whole team of make up artists, resting, second and third takes and sound mixing...it is easier to do) but live on stage, Elene is phenominal. her dancing is icredible too. you totally feel or Eva.

Phenomenal! I hope no one kills me, but I think she is my favorite Eva. She just seems to suite the part better than Patti Lupone, Elaine Paige, and Madonna. Absolutely outstanding!! The other thing that impresses me is that English is not her first language, yet you can't really tell because she sings it with such ease and confidence. Awesome!

Shonagh Daly performed Buenos Aires recently in Hyde Park during the concert for Andrew Lloyd Webber. Shonagh is absolutely amazing but a shame there is no footage of her performance.
I thought the same thing when I first heard her. I felt bad about thinking that, though - she's an artist in her own right and should be respected her talent. Her singing voice is beautiful. And she's the only true Argentine I've ever seen play the role! Patti LuPone will always be Evita for me, though.
Just came across these comments today (in prep for going to see a touring production of Evita this afternoon) ... but I saw Elena play the role in London a couple of years ago ... she was truly superb ... her dancing was of a superior class and she brough power and tenderness to the songs in all the right places ... by far one of the best Evita's there has ever been in my opinion
I saw her in 2006 and loved it! She brought such honesty and passion to the role. And she's a terrific dancer and singer to boot. A wonderful night it was. Pity the show didn't have a longer run.

Streisand had reached the time where she was to old to do the role. it would have been like Lucille Ball doing Mame which was truly awful. Also, Streisand visually would not have fit the role. And as far as her dancing? Streisand has been exceptional in some roles. I don't think this would have been one of them. I agree with you concerning Madonna. I disagree with you in that I think the only person who would have been worse was you know who.
That's your opinion. Lucille Ball could not sing and that was critical to the sucess of the movie. Streisand, in my opinion, could have walked away with at least an Oscar nomination. What about the dancing? Buenos Aires is about the only number demanding heavy dancing. One number! Streisand's voice would have elevated the score. Sorry, Streisand IS STILL MY CHOICE AND MY OPINION.
Fantastic performance! A thousand times better than Madonna, though I still love Patti LuPone the best, I played Eva in my school's production of Evita last month, and our pianist recommended I finish the same way Elena does, and it definately worked better for me, cause I can't sing that low very well.

The best Evita I've seen on Youtube. Better than Patti Lupone even. I just believe this woman to be Hispanic. I've grown up in a Hispanic household my entire life, and this song made me dance like any version of this song should do and to be quite honest, neither Patti's nor Madonna's did it for me.

i agree (Madonna embodied the role, but with a whole team of make up artists, resting, second and third takes and sound mixing...it is easier to do) but live on stage, Elene is phenominal. her dancing is icredible too. you totally feel or Eva.

THis WOMAN is just awful!!!! The best version is from the original 1976 concept double album, sung by the fantastic Julie Covington!! I cant seem to find it anywhere! If someone has it, please please post it! There isnt a single rendition that comes even close!!!

Phenomenal! I hope no one kills me, but I think she is my favorite Eva. She just seems to suite the part better than Patti Lupone, Elaine Paige, and Madonna. Absolutely outstanding!! The other thing that impresses me is that English is not her first language, yet you can't really tell because she sings it with such ease and confidence. Awesome!

I saw the tour last week in Hanley, with Louise Dearman as Eva, and after seeing this, Elena is SO much better. She is such an amazing singer aswel as a fab dancer!!!

i was in the show you saw! i was an extra and wasn't credited but i still got a tenner out of it! i was one of the 2 that held the banner in New Argentina!- well unless you saw it on 2nd thursday when i was behind the person who held the banner bcoz her parents were in that night lol

Yeah - he did 4 years training at the stage school i'm at. He graduated June, I graduate this June. Scary stuffff!!!

Shonagh Daly performed Buenos Aires recently in Hyde Park during the concert for Andrew Lloyd Webber. Shonagh is absolutely amazing but a shame there is no footage of her performance.

I thought the same thing when I first heard her. I felt bad about thinking that, though - she's an artist in her own right and should be respected her talent. Her singing voice is beautiful. And she's the only true Argentine I've ever seen play the role! Patti LuPone will always be Evita for me, though.

Just came across these comments today (in prep for going to see a touring production of Evita this afternoon) ... but I saw Elena play the role in London a couple of years ago ... she was truly superb ... her dancing was of a superior class and she brough power and tenderness to the songs in all the right places ... by far one of the best Evita's there has ever been in my opinion

This is amazing.
Hands down.
Anyone who claims otherwise is obviously uninformed.
She is an absolute firecracker, and this performance simply sparkles.
Simply a different kind of excitement and a different Evita than Patti's.
Patti is a huge huge belter. But Elena saves her belts for the big moments, while Patti just plain old belts.

I saw her in 2006 and loved it! She brought such honesty and passion to the role. And she's a terrific dancer and singer to boot. A wonderful night it was. Pity the show didn't have a longer run.

Barbra Streisand should have done Evita.
I cannot imagine why she did not do the movie. It could have been her 2nd Funny Girl performance.

Streisand had reached the time where she was to old to do the role. it would have been like Lucille Ball doing Mame which was truly awful. Also, Streisand visually would not have fit the role. And as far as her dancing? Streisand has been exceptional in some roles. I don't think this would have been one of them. I agree with you concerning Madonna. I disagree with you in that I think the only person who would have been worse was you know who.

That's your opinion. Lucille Ball could not sing and that was critical to the sucess of the movie. Streisand, in my opinion, could have walked away with at least an Oscar nomination. What about the dancing? Buenos Aires is about the only number demanding heavy dancing. One number! Streisand's voice would have elevated the score. Sorry, Streisand IS STILL MY CHOICE AND MY OPINION.

Fantastic performance! A thousand times better than Madonna, though I still love Patti LuPone the best, I played Eva in my school's production of Evita last month, and our pianist recommended I finish the same way Elena does, and it definately worked better for me, cause I can't sing that low very well.
