  • i just starred blacksmithing so i dont know a lot. where do you get metal and what type do you need??

  • instead of coal or charcoal what about dry 1 inch hardwood cubes. ive got a connection with a garden stake company and we get the factory 2nds as fuel for sugaring. i think a pile of them burning at the bottom would get hot enough with a blower.

  • PUT ON YOU'RE SAFETY GLASSES

  • Love your videos;) I have a question, when i try to forge a knife from a chissel, it cracks. Why? Greetings from denmark..

  • @manden22 It could either be micro-fractures or sometimes, with how there made, the grain becomes overly distorted so with the more you hammer, the weaker it gets.

I would suggest trying to fold or take a somewhat inferior piece of steel and fold it into the chisel. IF possible.

  • what about what u should wear so u dont git hert or set on fire

  • @gagurmom you would want to wear either leather or kevlar welders jacket.and make sure you drink plenty of water.

  • Yes! I want to be a blacksmith :D

  • Thank tou uncle. good advice and humor with regaurds to begginin blacksmiths.

  • @modernblacksmith Is it strange for an 11 year old to blacksmith?

  • @300spartanswin it wouldn't be bad to be an apprentice.

  • i notice you didn't mention propane, which is better than coal or charcoal

  • @scienceman64 ive been a blacksmithg off and on for 10 years. I have never messed with propane becuase of expense. Where im at and with the amount of heat, its not worth it, but that is here.

  • Just wanted to say that from a researcher's perspective, your videos are wonderful! I'm researching for a book in which a character is a blacksmith in a medieval period. Your videos have been invaluable as a resource. Thank you!

  • You forgot to wear your glasses...

  • Im 14, And im just getting started on building my shop. Going soon to get the materials for a forge.

  • hehehe @3:50

    2 1/2 pounds is exactly the same as 40 oz. ; )

  • Wow this is cool man im 25 and looking to get into the trade~ Im currently a certified welder from TSTC Waco so this is right up my ally thanks for the video- very motivating

  • yes it is, there are 12 different grinders in the shop

  • correct me if im wrong but at 0:43 is that a rack of angle grinders and cutting wheels in the background?

  • 4 people dropped a 100 pound anvil on there feet...

  • great video man! me and my buddy are 16 and i have another channel where we will upload some stuff of us making knives and what not.

  • LOL aso´s my clarinet teacher calls some clarinets cso´s (clarinet shaped objects) XD

  • What about if you are a female wanting to get into this? you said young or old dudes only! other than that found the video really helpful!

  • @Luce1614 one of the best blacksmiths I know is a young lady, look up becky little

  • @Luce1614 word. i was feeling the same way. it's awkward to listen to all dude references when i'm sitting here without that particular prerequisite met. video's great though.

  • Great vid and love your style & sense of humour... I'm gonna try a bit of metal working.

  • Thanks for posting this video! I am so glad I ran across your channel :)

  • black smithing is hard in the winter

  • I'm trying to convince my mom that i cannot burn down the house with a forge that only has two bricks. my anvil will prolly be a 50 pound dumbbell. Heck it's smaller than the charcoal grill plus I'm surrounded by faucets... she doesn't think i'm responsible i guess, any suggestions?

  • @dogbone222 I don't know what to tell you. you need to be safe about this hobby because you can burn down a house or hurt yourself, maybe try to find another location? I can't say for sure that the spot where you plan to work is safe unless i see it....

  • @modernblacksmith It's just the back porch, the ground is cement and i can move anything flammable, heck anything for that matter to, to a safe distance. Today I remembered that we have a bunch of left over wood from getting out floor replaced with tile. I plan to make a storage bin and a jerky smoke house, as some call it a "dehydrator".

  • @modernblacksmith Great news mon. I convinced my mom to let me do blacksmithing. I just needed to take an apprenticeship under a guy at my church. All I ask is the basics of safety and correct usage of the anvil. Harbor freight I've heard offers cheap anvils. I'ma name mine Bessy. Oh hey did you get my last response?

  • @dogbone222 My Mom had the same problem, so I just went out to our back pasture, and cleared the grass away from a medium sized square. Also, ALWAYS have a hose with a water gun on it, and on at all times. Just to be safe/reassuring.

  • @ComputerAnarchy Roger that. i really can't wait to begin.

  • @dogbone222 maybe you could find a spot to set up away from the house.

  • @callscott1 any suggestions? sadly i live in the city :(

  • @dogbone222 hmmm might want to look up blacksmith clubs in your city. Do you have a pick up truck. If you do you can buy some blacksmith equiptment. Find a legal area that you can legally have the fire. You can drive to an area set up your equiptment, do some blacksmithing for half a day or so. Than let everything cool down and load it back in your truck and take it back home for storage until the next time you go out.

  • @dogbone222 You may be able to find an ametuer blacksmith in your area with property that would let you set up on their property ever now and than. You can buy just enough blacksmith equiptment to get started and be able to make some things and get a feel for it. I fly remote control helicopters and have to load up all my equiptment go out and find a spot for the day than load it all up and take it back home.

  • @callscott1 I'll look around for an apprenticeship, maybe things will swing my way then. I plan on making swages and such for a rifled muske, and maybe some specialized tongs. I would also like to get into that hobby of RC vehicles, Glad to hear you do that sorta thing

  • @dogbone222 I would suggest a driveway. Much safer than indoors =) Just saying. And don't forget about the safety glasses!

  • ...3 guys sadly,...apparently lack the impetus to do hard, productive work...fun work...plus, they want it just handed to 'em...as for myself...I've a simple forge of a few hammers, an anvil &a forge made from a round Hibachi cooker...tho' I'm terribly disabled... when spring comes around...that forge'll be coaled-up...and even if all I can do is just crawl around...I'll be crawlin' w/a hammer in my hand, amongst the sparks bouncin' from th' anvil-strike and the hot-flame of the forge-fire...

  • Centaur forge sells coal online ($25 per 50 lb bag i believe)

  • Eh, quick question for you. I've got a 110ish pound anvil bolted onto a metal staned that's roughly two hundred pounds, and I've been sitting on this for a while trying to decide on going for a coal forge or a propane forge. Propane is easy to get etc, but the problem is I'm in Montana and mettalurgical coal is something I'd need to get shipped to me as far as I am aware. What are your thoughts on this, and per chance do you know of a place that does ship coal?

  • i agree with you about safety glasses. very important.my brother and i have recently took up forging rail road spike knives. its taken a few tries but we are getting better.do you have any info on tempering you could share with us.good job on video.

  • you did not have safety glasses on in this video. shame on you...LOL

i went out with my flashlight about an hour or two ago, and i think i have enough junk on my junk pile to make a brake rotor forge... guess i'll know after i get to welding on it.

  • Hope you got that thing out of your ear...

  • i was wondering if i pounded things with a hammer with my right arm over long periods of time and never used my left arm would i start to look like a freak with a ripped right arm and a small left arm?

  • I will only get to be a blacksmith when I retire in my 60's because I need to work in the office to earn enough for my family ;_;

  • @modernblacksmith Are there any group or meeting places for blacksmiths in Halifax?

  • anything i could use as an anvil?

  • @r2a2z2 Railroad track, solid chunks of iron, even a large rock.

  • wear your safety glasses!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Thanks bud...going to work right now!

  • hey im 14 year old and i allready made a knife by folding a metal bar 5 times and thats my first thing i made

  • thanks , gives me a bit more motivation , kinda sucks that only guys seem to be blacksmiths but i don't care i am going to do it anyway. ive always loved the idea of being a blacksmith or atleast doing it as a hobby , people say i cant because im a chick, well im going to show them (:

  • ive been wanting to start for awhile now but now im doin good to be able to afford a lump of coal lol got a forge a portable one i bought a lil bit ago

  • anyone have a recommendation for safteyglasses for glasses wearers?

  • @12Stupid01 if you go to any industrial supply or welding equipment store they will have glasses made to do the job. and they don't usually cost much.

  • I'm starting tomorrow and my "anvil" is an unkown shaft that has no purpose but to smash steel on and is made of 4140.

  • @Avatar230594 that's awesome my first anvil was pretty much the same thing. do a video of your first efforts, it's nice to look back after a few years to see what you've learned

  • @modernblacksmith Thanks and good advice, I made half a knife point today. I think I'm a natural because it looks good.

  • i love making knives out of nails

  • @legojoe9 small knives or big nails!

  • @modernblacksmith im 14 and ive got an anvil and most of the stuff to blacksmith but i dont have the money to buy charcoal or coal coud i burn wood

  • @legojoe9 ...hey, I'm gonna git-on that technique too, come this spring...I've about 25# of old square-head, 20-penny steel nails that'd be perfect for it...plus, I just don't have the physical- wherewithal to handle any larger stock...my idea is to mix nails, bolts & other 'stuff' made of different steels & try to get little pattern-welded knives outta' it...I just hope my hammerin' will work to produce the idea...as for eye protection: I've 1 stylized wrap-around & 1 pair that covers myglasses

  • Blood definitely blood. Paint wouldn't have the balls to stick around a blood thirsty warrior such as yourself

  • @TheWhoaDude that's funny!

  • Notice how there are no thumbs down x)

  • @2daewoo4u it won't last!

  • "Thats either paint or blood from the last guy who gave me a thumbs down"

    I lol'd

  • Rail plates work too...just noisy lol

  • @warriorofsteel01 I've had those plates before....couldn't think about how to use them for anything though.

  • cool thanks i have alot of good ideas for things i want to make but were can i get a anvil

  • @angelmistninja you only need a basic small anvil from northern tool or a place like that

  • @modernblacksmith thank you much for allowing my video response,as you can see ive caught the bug,and believe it or not have only been doing this for a few months.im not as much into heavy forging(as i dont have the proper heat ( :).but i hope to sometime soon make a small chunk of pattern welt steel to make a Knights dagger.Have you any Experiance in Damascus?if so any tips would be appreciated,Layering, which types of steel to use ETC; thanks again

  • @MrJsowa no problem. no I don't have much experience in knife making, but I make them for fun from time to time

  • @modernblacksmith Is that a good age

  • @saxheart42 sure anyone can do blacksmithing, we have many young people in our club.

  • OK i am 14 and i want to be a blacksmith what is a good age to start ?????

  • @angelmistninja7 we have kids younger than you in our blacksmiths association!

  • @modernblacksmith Hey I'm 11 and I am very interested in blacksmithing ever since i heard about what is in games

  • 3:10 + 0 dislikes on the video. Word.

  • hey thanks for replying its really cool that you pay attention to your comments and it means a lot that said that and i look forward to your next video =D

  • would propane be easier than coal? which is more cost effective?

  • @MourningStar13666 coal is way cheaper by far (if it's common around your area) propane is better for larger things and is convienient (but watch for carbon monoxide in a small building)

  • Can you burn pea coal?

  • @racedriver52 "pea" coal refers to the small size of the chunks of coal (pea coal is the size I usually use) and is the most useful size of coal for a blacksmith.

  • @modernblacksmith thanks for the reply, thats the size I have easiest access to, my grandparents heat with it.

  • @racedriver52 the stuff I'm using now was a furnace coal, works very well, and was real cheap

  • Great video, Hey wear your glasses...

  • This is a great video....I think I will get started..I have some railroad rail too!

  • I noticed you have a plasma cam in the background, what type of work do you do with it? and what do you think of it?

  • @jeffreysanto oh, yeah, I love it. use it everyday (except today my plasma has an issue right now) but it's great don't know how i did without it for twenty years! it gets used in a lot of my videos there are a few devoted to the use of the plasmacam.

  • I noticed that there were no dislikes on this video, I think the sledgehammer comment did ya good lol

  • @DSH1ZNYT I don't want to jinx it!! I think a dislike is soon coming...

  • @modernblacksmith, haha well it looks like you may have to get that hammer back out. this is some good work as soon as I get done with the military I plan on setting myself up a small shop. Im really looking at getting an automated plasma cutter like yours. how much was that?

  • @DSH1ZNYT around $10,000 for a simple set-up $20,000 for a torchmate

  • Really enjoyed your talk...interesting! Thanks

  • @Kalkaekie thank you hope you've subscribed!!

  • What happens if you try to raise the carbon content in steel which your forging a knife out of? I have the same jacket as you by the way.

  • You didn't wear your glasses.

  • @glitenin I was walking around!!! you guys are so hard on me!

  • "that's either red paint or blood from the last guy that gave me a thumbs down".......84 thumbs up and not one thumbs down....i wonder if there's some sort of connection?..................

  • @Z0V4 who knows!! maybe it's true *sinister laugh*

  • wheres the easyiest place to git tools

  • @MrCarolinacoy yard sales and flea markets

  • @modernblacksmith ok thank you

  • Blacksmithing has been on the back of my mind for several years now (im 22 atm)...

watching your video just gets be excited to start trying it out for some reason xD

  • @Batsaias try to join a local blacksmiths club every state of province has one, they will show you how to do it.

  • Thanks for the help ypur a cool dude btw im a girl and will be an awsome black smith

  • @lillybugg10 I think that's very cool that a young lady wants to be a blacksmith! I know a few lady blacksmiths and they are all very successful. because most women want to stay focus on something when they want to learn it, not like use fellers, we just want to smash stuff!!

  • wud u need a clamp for holding metal?

  • @blackpearlfan01 a vise you mean? not really but it's a very useful thing for any man to own....

  • @modernblacksmith ok cuz when i was trying my first dagger as i was holding it it was hot and number two i felt the shock and it kinda hurt

  • you mentioned that you sledgehammered the last guy who gave you a dislike, and you will notice that this video has no dislikes

  • @SlugInABoat I have maybe 4 dislikes out of a thousand so I must be doing something right

  • Hey Man!

I really dig this video. You have a great personality and I'll bet you're a good teacher. I appreciate the tips. I also think it's great you advocate the use of glasses. I've got many years serving as a first responder at the shop I work and and am all too familiar with rust flake sneaking past the glasses. I can't imagine a hot piece of slag jumping in there. Keep it up! I'll be checking out your other videos!

  • @koterba13 thanks buuuuddddddyyy

  • brake forge!!!

  • @Worrall82 did you see my latest video on the mini-forge I'm developing for beginners?

  • "blood from the last guy who gave me a thumbs down" LOL that'll gets you a thumb up from me. thanks brother! hey can i just get a ASO from harbor freight to forge a few knives and such, just to start out with? I want to make a Kerambit, Bushcraft woodlore clone knife, and maybe some other ironworks stuff for fun. what do you think bro?

  • @ninjastick419 sure buddy, you can use anything at all, the point is that you're doing it!

  • My neighbor is a blacksmith, it is pretty awesome because on holidays he puts up special things he made like on halloween he made a dragon head that opened it's mouth every now and then and had red glowing eyes, and ocassionally he brings us cookies. I couldn't wish for a better neighbor.

  • @juliabrandon76 if you look at the metal after heating you can see that it's dark in the core, when you see that it's because it did not soak long enough

  • I'd love to be a blacksmith! I wish I could use you as a mentor I can learn better through watching >.< Oh well I'll give it my best shot! I hope maybe one day I can become a grate blacksmith and make really grate things! Would you mind telling me a few stores or places I could find the tools I will need or where I can get the metal? Also where can I find coal? It might seem silly but I never bought coal before. e-o

  • @fastitslol you're lucky you have youtube to learn from. there's lots of info here once you get started. it's mostly about taking the first step and doing it.

  • Instead of a sluge hammer a fencing maul would be a good idea greate vid

  • @matthewisadamon yes, as long as it's not iron some fence mauls are cast iron. a big steel bar hammered into the earth works very well also.

  • forgot to say thanks for the good luck and I already got 2 pairs of safety glasses.

nice tutorial and thank you for making it :)

  • forge/grill, good hammers, chisel, sharpeners, anvil, and then some good metal.

yeah should work, I guess if I ever pick all of this up the price would be 500 dollars+

  • @rogantu it wouldn't cost nearly that much if you look for old used tools, they work just as good (sometimes better) just start collecting them at flea markets and yard sales

  • This was extremely helpful, as i am a 13 YO ambitionist on a budget. I will definitly be cheking out some more of your videos, and you just earned a subscriber :)

  • @DontPutSpiceonRice thanks buddy. hope you have fun, be safe! don't try anything too heavy duty at first

  • thanks

  • thank you for this video i want to become a chemical or mechatronic engineer once i graduate from high school, but i love designing stuff and i also want to make them. so thanks again for making some of my dreams pick up because i'm kinda lazy.

  • @TheWraithkiller I was a very lazy kid, look at me now a lazy (but successful) adult!

  • Great video, thanks for your efforts, I am making the steps to to some blacksmithing!

  • @WalkerSkyRanch good luck. it's not too hard.

  • Now i finally have my anvil, It's 264.5 lbs cast iron...

Everybody say it sucks. I don't know becas my is actually really hard and doesn't leave marks. A neighbour gave me the avil so... the rebound is really, really good.

What am i suppose to do? and i don't want to drive 200 km and pay 300 $. I can't afford that, Im only 13...I think it's just embarrasing to say to people that the anvil you owns is made out of cast iron!

  • @swedishhunter21 sounds like you're on your way!! it doesn't matter what you have for an anvil as long as it's a big lump of metal. Understand this...what you have for tools means mostly nothing. what's really important is what you can create with it!! make something useful or beautiful......your choice. good luck my friend!

  • thanks:)

  • Can i use about 4 inches long wood-sticks for my homemade forge, a sheet plate+a pipe with a hair dryer?

  • @swedishhunter21 yes you can. use alder wood if you can find it! and a bathroom ceiling fan works better and will only cost $20-$30

  • @modernblacksmith i havent through this all the way through yet but what i was thinking is how do you get the materials? if you dont want a railroad spike and you dont have any scrap metal around theres NO WHERE i know of where you can just get a plain old bar or element block like iron bronze or steel! oh and could you give me some examples of what i can use? i might choose the wrong type of metal or something.

  • @jcodym13 got to your nearest welding shop and let them know what you want to get into and they'll give you some scrap steel if you ask nicely

  • Comment removed

  • @modernblacksmith theres the thing, i dont live near anything like that :( is there a substitute for it? like a repair shop or an automobile repairmen? because my father's best friend owns a car shop RIGHT across the highway from me, and he has a bunch of metal left laying around outside it

  • @modernblacksmith hey i just made a forge from some bricks i found out in this place i call the "powerlines" and theres a bunch of metal and junk there. i used it once today and i could only manage to flatten a hollow tube end but i was pretty proud of myself, the reason being is because its about a knee height furnace and i used wood because theres no coal or charcoal around. can i use wood? i thought i couldnt but i rather not use it anyways because it sucks, hah.

  • @jcodym13 that's great buddy, keep it up before you know it you'll be forging with the best of them, when i was your age I had not accomplished much of anything so you have a good start on doing better than me!! you can use anything on a forge dry hardwood, coal, charcoal whatever as long as you blow air under the fire it will get very hot. do whatever it takes to get the job done!

  • so im 13 and am just starting blacksmithing i have made spears a grapaling hook and am intresed in makeing swords and knifes my dad is a brick layer so he said he will make me a forge this summer he said that he could make me a fire brick forge and burn coal or that i can get a propane forge do u have any advice?

  • @mattnjaqui making a brick forge is not as simple as it sounds it needs to be shaped perfectly and use the right bricks. about a 9 even on a professional masons difficulty chart. a portable coal forge is a better bet for the beginner. but only if you have a good source of coal nearby....if not make a small propane they are very easy to make and there is a million different designs out there. if you have any questions about anything feel free to ask i reply to all comments (most of the time)

  • @modernblacksmith ok so how much propain does it take usally

  • @mattnjaqui that can vary greatly, my old large propane forge would use half of a 20 lb can in a day. but the small 5 minute forge in my other video uses only a small propane can per day

  • @modernblacksmith would it be smarter for me to use a brick forge?

  • @mattnjaqui there is a website anvilfire and I think there is a plan there for making a steel side-draft chimney (after that is made you build the brick work around that) not a small job however. you need to study up on all that before you build one.

  • @modernblacksmith ya like i said before my dad speachalize in brick laying he has done that for 40 years and he could do that easaly and his buddy is a profechanal blacksmith for renasant fairs and makes plate boady armor and swords and he will also help i just need to know what would be the best choice of a forge

  • you did forget one thing..... tongs.

  • @boredism07 the first few years i did any forging, I didn't have any tongs, vise grips work great (I still use them a lot) also I try to eliminate the need for tongs by keeping the work fairly long. but yes, they are important. an advanced skill to make them.......

  • very well said

  • @braedinn thank you sir!

  • Nice video, I remember that I used a sledge hammer head. Remembering the trouble of finding good stuff. But I'm a great example that it is possible to for young people to find good stuff, I think. As long as you are willing and put enough energy in it, and you have to remember, good tools cost a fair amount of money, but it will be up to the job!

As for the S-glasses, I'm going to consider that too.

  • @TechnicusJoe I had to use a sledgehammer head on a job once when I didn't have my blacksmiths tools with me to make some scrollwork

  • @modernblacksmith, sounds like a challenge I'd like to try one day. :)

  • @TechnicusJoe I had another guy hold the sledgehammer in the dirt!

  • @modernblacksmith "note for me: get guy to hold the sledge hammer for me" done :)

  • Nice video, I never thought to use a sledgehammer face as an anvil.

  • @Clipity it works fine for very small stuff.
