  • I love this poem it just speaks to me...i love the fact her understands what most people don't get..marriage is about love..nothing else matters. It's sad that two ppl in love like his sister and her wife couldn't get married in america but a man and a women drunk in Las vegas can...in what world is that fair.

  • Umm... Ew? Don't reply, not interested Un hearing it. I like the passion In his voice and that's just about it. Okay, by now. (:

  • 16 people don't know what love is.

  • So ignorant about my own country. Apparantly in april 2001 we married the first gay couple ever in the world. (The Netherlands)

  • A year later and this still makes me cry. I wonder if I should write a article about gay marriage. Why? It is now exactly ten years ago that gaymarriage was legalised (?) in the Netherlands. Since then it is also in Belgium, Spain, part of America and other countries. I hope that in another ten years gaymarriage is accepted in more than half of the world, with America and Europe leading.

  • @angelblokzijl true, in the UK, Gaymarriage is illigel, but we can have civile partneship but not marriage, it is rong, but i am truly thankful just for that, and that it is ligal in many contrus ^-^

  • @Blood4wrists Do you have the same rights with civile partnership in UK? Same Tax? How about adoption?

  • @angelblokzijl we had the right to adopt for about 5 years now, but there are still some places were they wont let a gay/Lesbian couple adopt such as Religious places, but most are happy welcom them. Im not that sure about the tax but we do have the same rights with civile partnership... finely...

  • you are wonderful alvin. thank you. ps. you were at my college on thursday, i was the one with short hair in the black shirt and tie :)

  • Such passion, the speaker of the poem really had love for his sister. If I had a brother with enough Cajones to stand up for my right to marry, I'd consider myself the luckiest sister in the world.

  • beautiful, gorgeous, stunning, dazzling, amazing. Such raw passion, it really is a jewel to humanity.

  • I made a stamp on DeviantArt with the line about the Constitution (because it's my favorite). I hope you don't mind. I gave you credit and linked this video, of course.

  • @Emmasj ht tp://emmasj.deviantart.c om/#/d3d36nq

  • screw the 16 people who dislike this.

  • daaang i litterally feel like CRYING out! he has so much emotion!

  • i love this poem! alvin lau is one of my inspirations to keep on writing poetry. i first saw this video nearly a year ago, but it's still as powerful as its underlying message for LOVE. NOTHING ELSE MATTERS.

  • "I wanna be able to wipe away my sister's tears with a copy of the constitution that doesn't take away her right to say 'I Do'" THIS IS THE BEST LINE, IN THE BEST POEM EVER! <3

  • I forgot to breathe a few times while watching this video...THIS is epic truth

  • Marriage is about love. Nothing else matters.

  • wow. amazing, beautiful

  • I want to show everyone in my GSA club this video. It is message of true passion and love. Anyone who didn't cry while watching this seriously has no heart.

  • it makes me cry whenever i hear Alvin at 2:40 say: "i want to be able to wipe away my sister's tears with a copy of the constitution that doesn't take away her right to say 'i do'".

  • wow, chills, of reality

  • I cry whenever i listen to this.

And I cry more seeing 12 dislikes

  • Thumbs up for PROP 8 being overturned in California...=) Love is love.

  • I cried the first six times I watched this. Yeah. This is my fifteenth time watching it. Amazing.

  • Absolutely LOVE this. x

  • I cry every time I hear this poem. It is so beautiful, yet it breaks my heart, because this is my story...and many others who are suffering in hidden agony. Thank you so much citizenwind, for making me cry tears of beauty and sadness.

  • are you gay?

I have a friend who looks like you :-D

    looove you!!!!

  • I love this guy. :)

  • Wow, hanahou.

  • When he first started this poem I was in a homophobe mindset when he finished I realized that no one can tell you who or how to love!!! My favorite part was when he said his sister and her wife would be in hell smiling hand in hand. I really almost cried!!! He is the truth!!! Not to mention he's from CHI TOWN BABY!!!! LOL

  • damn i cried..

and you can think what you want

but that doesn't keep me from being right

and you from being fucking wrong!"

  • Wonderful man wonderful

  • brilliant i hope this sheds light on gay marriage.

  • Love it!!! <3

  • Fucking preach it, man.

  • this is a great poem! i cant stop watching it.... its so true.

  • Pretty good poem;

  • This was beautiful.

    It's about love.

    Nothing else matters....

  • You disgust me.

How can you not be happy for a lovely woman marring someone she loves?

Marriage should be based on love,

    Not on gender...

    People marry their fucking cars.

So why can't they marry their own gender?

  • awesome!!!! love it....

  • this one poem alone changed my view from being against gay marrige, to for it. No kidding.

  • dope

  • His speaking voice is great.

  • Must be a pretty kickass wife to "cause a passion so intense that it signed the green grass brown."

His imagery of the wedding was great.

  • I got a little teary

  • Saw Alvin at the conference, was amazing.

  • Not gonna lie, I almost cried. :|

  • Outstanding.

  • Wow...felt like you could almost hear his heart beating for his sister and her love.

  • America is the land of freedom and equality, NOT discrimination and stupidity.

    GREAT JOB ALVIN!

  • Epic poem.

  • *claps* Beautiful. It made me cry. So so true. GorillaSaint, straight people have butt sex as well, so if you are scared you're children are going to have or learn butt sex then remove their eyeballs, cut off their ears, put something in their buttholes and remove their gender part. Either straight or gay, there are still pornos where children can learn this things. The only thing gays can teach is about love and acceptance of something different.

  • God damn it that made me cry.

  • GorillaSaint,

being gay IS part genetic. It's all a matter of nature and nurture to, in a sense, "turn the gene on." If being gay was a choice, so would being straight, and I would have chosen that a long time ago, but it isn't. I'd love people to be more educated about the issues at hand instead of making judgments without prior knowledge to both sides.

How can you have statistics of divorce rates if a majority of the states don't recognize same sex marriages in the first place?

  • GorillaSaint,

If being gay is an influence, I truly wonder about those gay men that marry women just to hide their true sexuality their entire lives. It sounds to me that the influence is provoked by the straight society of what's "normal". Anyway, you won't have to worry about your kids learning butt sex...if they're truly straight, that is. =x

  • Simply beautiful....Shared it with many friends.

  • i wonder what's more corrupt and worse for my childen, being gay, or being a prejudiced bigot. tough one.

  • hmm i wonder why so many die from aids now...and the first account of aids was in san francisco and mainly among gays....i wonder why people call me intolerant when gays cant tolerate that they didnt get it their way....i wonder why people think homosexuality is genetic when their have been no foundings up nucleotide base pairs that code for "homosexuality"...i love the gay people, i know many, have many in my family.. i just dont agree with their motives.

  • Well, its already a known fact that AIDS is man-made(biochemical weapon actually)and that they passed it out in polio shots and flu vaccinations, As for genetics, I'm not sure if I believe that either, but hey, there is a rumor saying that they found a gay gene(though I really don't believe it.) You love who you love regardless. I honestly look at homosexuality as a form of natural population control anyway. Let them adopt kids, hell if they can take care of them, y not?!

  • what do you mean AIDS is "man made" its a viral infection

  • No, it can be caught through sex, open sores, and bad blood transfusions, but its orgin was developed in a lab. This is not a natural occurrence. Even scientist have confirmed that Aids is lab created. It came when the labs were creating a polio vaccine. The popular ingredient was monkey kidneys. The monkeys used had SIV(simian immunodeficiency virus).Monkeys don't die from it, and neither did the african people who eat them. HIV came after mixing all the other ingredients for the Polio vaccine

  • cont.@hazelstears: HIV doesn't kill, though it does causes immune deficiency, however it been proven that a lot of the medicine that was used to treat HIV caused AIDS(aids is different from HIV) If you got aids, then it was basically over. There is really no official way to tell if you have HIV, Its a specific mutation that they look for, but since everyone gets vaccinated for POLIO, a lot of people could have it. But the people they single out to have HIV/AIDS been majority blacks and Gays.

  • race and orientation has nothing to do with intellect. Anybody can research the orgins of Aids. A simple and ever popular google search will give the you info to at least start out with. Let me guess, you're either a bigot, or willfully misinformed. And sadly, this was your best attempt at a rebuttal, which mean the schools have failed you. Because if you read my earlier comments on this page, you wouldn't even have to guess. but, i forget, research is beyond your expertise.

  • According to WedMD AIDS is caused by HIV (human immunodeficiency virus) which casues the destruction of the human immune system. HIV causes crucial immune cells (CD4+ T) to become disabled or killed. A healthy person has up to 1200 CD4+ T cells per cubic millimeter. During HIV infection that number declines and when it reaches below 200 he or she becomes particularly vulnerable to the opportunistic infections and cancers that typify AIDS, the end stage of HIV disease.

  • Most scientists think that HIV causes AIDS by directly killing CD4+ T cells or interfering with their normal function, and by triggering other events that weaken a person's immune function.

  • screw you go back to school if anything the schools failed you for teaching you that AIDS is a "man-made biochemical warfare"

  • gorillasaint:

actually it is known that there is a tendency in homosexuals to have a slightly smaller hypothalamus

look it up before you start running your mouth

  • okay that sounds like a lie.

What if your straight all your life

and then you start liking girls/guys

    then what?

your brain slightly dies off a bit?

    thats not right...

  • from what i read the brain doesnt die off when they get older and become gay. they are born with a smaller hypothalamus

  • There's a tendency in bigots to have a slightly smaller soul.

  • excuse me?

  • Consider yourself excused :)

  • WaprillsJimBob>> LOL! hazelstears seems to be an agry soul. probably an unhappy dude. i was reading most of the comments bc they're kinda fun, but his would just bore me to tears and i'd just move on hahah.

  • OMG! amazing! NO ON PROP 8!!!

  • "marriage is about love and nothing else..."

    ---so true.

    this is brilliant.

  • Only two words can sum up this poem and the way Alvin Lau delivered it: FUCK YEAH!

  • Dude, you're putting tears in my eyes... You are AMAZING.

  • Fucking real 5/5

  • i had chills through the whole thing

  • amazing.

  • Brilliance, total truth.

  • just wow...i'm so fucking...amazed...

  • poetry has never moved me as much as these 3 minutes and 32 seconds did . tears ... that's all i can say <3

  • dude is fucking amazing... and i agree 100% with him and im a striaght male but i agree tht people should have the right to love whoever they want because how easy is ur life that u can worry about what people r doing in the privacy of their own homes? We have no right as human beings to tell each other how we should live... so amen to u man

  • wow

  • fucking insane

  • thank you for writing and this poem

  • Anyone who isn't moved by such an eloquent plea for equality is truly dead, with no hope of reproach. Prejudice dehumanizes victims, trifles with the soul, and demoralizes into repression. And they say that Satan is a myth... he's here, in the minds of the blind.

  • I've listened to this so many times,

I know about half of it.

I've said parts of it for my class at school.

& I have the very last line in my note book.

    Everyone makes fun of me,

    But I don't care,

    I'll do what I want,

    & love who I like.

    Simple as that.

  • can you send me the words?

i copied it down too, but there are some parts i think ive gotten mixed up.

  • beautiful. brought a tear to my eye.

  • i love him

  • To all of those reading my four recent comments posted below this.. it is my reply to KEN107.

  • Alvin Lau came to my school a few months back, with Katie FX. Both of them totally rocked the house, and I bought one of his CDs.

When I said they were my heroes, they looked at the safety pin holding my glasses together and said I was theirs for doing that!

It was definitely one of the best Slams ever at our school. Both of them are such great poets and I ADORE this poem and its message.

  • OH MY GOD

    That was astonishing.

    SO AMAZING!

  • I fully understand your point but as i continue to read your opinion it is difficult for me to agree. Although you might feel i am belittling you in some way.. i am not, i am simply responding and believe me i am not what you would call a "thick head".

  • Think about it in todays society there is rape, molestation, child abuse, increased orphans, etc. SO is that a rational society, does that create wisdom?!? Are these the actions that are the governing laws of our behavior?! i think NOT. Last but NOT least, you mention the sacredness of marriage.. how can marriage between two mature and willing individuals who truly love eachother be wrong or not sacred? Society WAS founded on straight marriages BUT society is continually and forever changing.

  • You say marriage is neologism. Lets emphasize on that real quickly. Marriage has many other meanings, yes.. but those meanings do NOT giv reason to discriminate someone's sexual orientation. Take parenthood for instance, just because a person is gay, lesbian, bisexual, or transsexual does NOT mean he/she is incapable of being a parent. That is one misconception ignorance creates.

  • Other things that many have misconceptions of, is, LGBT persons would have problems with reproduction, evolutionary survival, and child-bearing. I know many LGBT persons and they would love to have children and so of course they use alternative choices. Those children who have been brought up in a LGBT home have grown up perfectly healthy and happy. So who's to say its a bad thing.

  • Ken107, read the Wikipedia article for "axiom". All rational arguments logically stand upon a base of irrational axioms; emotion/preference is what selects the axioms. The core of your beloved "rational" belief system is irrationally derived; that is, your axioms are selected by preference/emotion/faith.

  • So every marriage that does not bare children withing the first two years should be anulled and rendered null and void. If children are the fruit of marriage then it should be required that child birth should take place within the first year to two years. Society is based on passion and understanding, not cold rationale. We demenstrate our lack of rational thought with ever day we spend in a war that means absolutely nothing. Your arguments is tailored to fit your own undeniable predjudice.

  • I suppose you are one of those mundane people who have a routine, live life the same way every day, never thinking outside of the box, but thinking that using a thesaurus when typing insulting comments on a video that you took the time to watch makes you sound somewhat intelligent. You are horribly mistaken. Absolute conservatives like yourself cannot accept that homosexuality is as natural as heterosexuality. To put it more simply for you, so you can understand, you, ken107, are an idiot.

  • I don't want to insult any one, however you have missed a very big reality. We are over populating the planet, so even if I did not believe that people should be allowed to love and marry whom ever they wish; I would still support homosexuality if only because most homosexual couples don't have children. O, and P.S. marriage has nothing to do with evolution; do you think things only started to evolve after we invented weddings? Your Christianity is showing.

  • I agree Madorico

  • Just because people disagree with you, doesn't mean they lack "wisdom." They simply have a disagreeing stance. For example, I don't think you lack wisdom, you just can't tell your mouth and your anus apart.

  • Wisdom/knowledge/rationality is merely a tool for understanding and shaping reality; it is emotion/soul/preference that provides meaningful direction towards which to apply that tool. All rational arguments stand upon a base of irrational axioms; emotion/preference is what selects the axioms. You fail to see that not only is humanity driven by emotion/soul/preference, but that it _cannot_ be driven by anything else.

  • (Is this comment section broken? My previous reply should have appeared under ken107's comment.)

  • Beautiful and amazing!

  • that was one of the most amazing things i have ever heard.

    hands down.

  • absolutely amazing <3

    iiiii definitely teared.

  • This poem makes me cry, each time. It's so beautiful. Magic. Truly.

  • one of the most beautiful and passionate pieces of poetry i heard in a very long time.

    bravo!

  • this is ridiculously truthful.... i dream to be president someday, and when asked about my stance on "gay marriage" I'll reply with the showing or hopefully a live performance by alvin lau of this painting... of this poem... of this art and expression of truth. vote for me?

  • bringing tears to my eyes.

  • It is bitter cold outside and drafty inside my house, but the goosebumps on my arms and the chills running through my body are not because of the weather but because of your powerful, beautiful tribute to your sister, her bride, and the covenant of their marriage.

    I am still weepy.

    Thank you for this.

  • speak on it, i teared up. you are fucking amazing.

  • i LOVE this poem. so strong and so...amazing.
