I've just got to know that Switzerland (my country) wants to stop it's humanitarian efforts in North Korea. The explanation is that it is a totalitarian system that has values totally contrary to those of Switzerland, while at the same time sticking to the totalitarian drug prohibition and putting ordinary people into prison and therefore destroying their future. I'm Russian and live in Russia and very happy with Modern Day Russia and how it is especially in the larger cities where living standards are like in the west but please do not say that Gorbachev is a great person. He may have brought down the Soviet Union but the way he did it was horrific for the nation and carried into the awful 90's. Only in the 00's Russia advanced forward and thankfully for oil and gas prices booming peoples lives are now good.

As for Gorbachev, he could have been a man like Milosevic. He would have provoked great ethnic wars to retain power & yet in the end have seen the collapse of the Soviet Union. Only it would have been w/ millions dead as well. It seems that Putin is attempting something like Milosevic, in Georgia etc. Just trying to be more subtle about it.

To be honest Putin is not a bad guy as he is made out to be in the west. Have to live there to understand. He brought order to the country and under him crime hugely dropped and middle class grew 9 times with poverty being slashed in half. Yeah the country still has some problems but Putin is what Russia needed at the time. @STzenit: Yeah, sure Soviet...oops...Russian prosperity doesn't rely on energy revenue (oil, gas, etc.) to float its economy. That's why Putin goes around threatening sovereign countries like the Ukraine etc. w/ cut offs of gas service. The Russian economy has almost nothing else apart from arms sales. The thing about prevailing trends, they never really prevail. If what your doing has a bad result, you just stop doing it.

@STzenit The real workings of the Russian economy are about as clear as british beer. It has always been so. As for the names you drop, they mean nothing to me. As for "hydrocarbons" being only a third of the economy, a third is hardly a negligible sum. The reality behind your numbers, if there even is one probably quite different from what you present. Construction doesn't just happen, some other prior economic activity is needed to drive it.

Because when Kim il sung had dictated, n.korea was supported by Soviet union, so wealthier than s.korea. that is why Kim Jung Eun marketing himself as grandson of Kim Il Sung. After late 80s, n. korean economy collapsed and Kim jung il took the throne.
