Great song. We should all unite to find out the truth of the false flag terror attacks of 9-11. The real war was always against American freedoms and was conducted against us by the federal government and the corporations. Of course those of us who warned you all of this at that time were denounced as traitors by the flag waving blind patriot idiot types. How do all you blind patriots like the condition your country is in now? We warned you about the New World Order and what they were doing.
I remember watching that after 9-11, to me it signaled that we, as a nation were getting ready to go to war. Which we did later on, to destroy and enemy bent on the destruction of our way of life and the death of all men, women and children associated with that way of life. 10 yrs later now, people have forgotten what it felt like those days after 9-11. They are fools for having forgot and a doomed to repeat this tradjedy over and over again.

The second I saw this on TV, I just broke down in sorrow for the victims and in pride thinking "America will live on, and we're taking those bastards to war!" Never forget 9/11/01
When I watched this the first time on Sept 14, 2001, I was very moved to tears and I'm not ashmed to say so. There is only one word that was changed over the years to this song. It originally went "Let us die so men may be free" It is now "let us live so men may be free" That is sad to me. This country has been good to me and my ancestors. I would die for my country if necessary. I love America. God Bless the USA!
@tfan68 Mark says Julia Ward Howe, originally wrote and sold the song to the Atlantic monthly. She originally wrote it with the words "as he died to make men holy, let us die to make men free" meaning a reference to Christ and that was published in the monthly in 1862. There was no other version that she wrote. It was changed later as progressive politics began to play a part in American government.
@Marksnotebook I'm very curious about when that lyric was changed. Would you happen to know the approximate year, or have any other information about it?
@TroyOi Julia Ward Howe, wrote this song in 1861, then it was published in 1862. I am not certain of the exact date on change of words...early 20th century for sure. It was when all the progressive stuff started in the United States. When one writes a song you do not change it unless you have written permission from the author. There is more thought on this but I cannot write it all in this small space. Go check out Julia Ward Howe....or google Battle Hymn of the Republic.
@Marksnotebook Thanks. I'm aware of who wrote it, and how it came to be written. Unless you have some source, I wouldn't be so certain of how & why the change took place. One possible cause, in my view, was the need to render the song more palatable to Southerners. I'm sure a lot of them had problems with the idea of paying such homage to their former enemies, let alone accepting that the Union soldiers' motives were primarily the freeing of enslaved men & women.
damn the bastards that did this to the united states. most americans might have forgotten what al qaeda did to us but i will never forget. 9/11 is why we must keep looking for that piece of trash, osama bin laden.
@21soldat it wasn't, you just can't accept the truth and have to dilute your mind to such a miniscule level that you offend those who were close to the victims of that tragic day. I hope you learn this soon, for not everyone ignores people like you whom believe in these rediculous conspiracy stories.

My grandfathers marched to this tune: one of them fought in World War II and the other one fought in Korea and 'Nam. this was back when our country actually had a back-bone...the current administration is now trying to make friends with the people who killed our innocents....and yet no one can see this, we are too busy patting ourselves on the back for being the first super power to elect a black leader...just wished the black leader had been one with courage instead of self-righteous indignation..there are so many african american leaders out there much more eminently qualified than Obama..sad sad story
I'm refering to the nazi era. communist eastern germany was bankrupt, and soviets also so western germany "bought" it. The Americans showed some respect for our struggles but the russians gave us the oportunity to buy it, that was the story i heard.
The aftermath of that day, which I will always vividly remember, was handled superbly. It was Bush's finest hour, and he deserved his 90+% approval rating.
Still, I think if John McCain had won the primaries in 2000 then gone on to beat Gore he would have done better in general, and especially been a far better wartime leader.
I bet if Osama bin Laden, on 9/12/01, magically woke up in an alternate universe where, McCain (65 at the time) was president, he would have shit his pants.
They can knock down our towers, but they'll never defeat our spirit.
DONT READ THIS A few years ago, two parents went out for dinner. A few hours later, the babysitter was calling to ask if she could cover up the clown statue in the kids' room, the father said,"Take the kids and get out of the house. We'll call the police, we don't have a clown statue." The "clown statue" is really a killer that escaped from jail. If you don't post this letter on to 10 videos tonight, the clown will be in your bed at 3:00 am with a chainsaw in his hand;sorry
@mikailusmaximus If you really want to hear and see powerful, go check out the Reagan Funeral Battle Hymn of the Republic. You can hear the words very clearly. Quite moving.
God is more than a song by a finite human in His universe. Thank Him for giving you a choice. My view: our culture started when Jerusalem met Athens in Rome. Did Socrates exist? Was Socrates was what Plato said he was? Why do you think so? Do U believe only in what you can see or touch directly? Thank God for His Son who taught us that through faith, hope, love and hard work, our miracles could go far beyond His. Since then we have cured leprosy and gone to the moon. Thank God! Thank U!
Thank you for taking the time to consider and then respond to my views. What does tobleramone represent or stand for? Where are you? Just curious. Thank you again. Most sincerely.
My name doesn't really stand for anything, it's just Toblerone (a kind of chocolate I don't much like) and Ramone joined together. I'm not that keen on it now.
I love chocolate - good chocolate that is - but, like you, don't particularly care for Toblerone. Have you ever tried Teuscher's? Have you heard 'The Ramones?'
@tobleramone scientific endeavor? People have prayed to succeed and found great results.People prayed for curing diseases for sure, and same for SpaceTravel, becauseTheyWereBoth hard tasks.God, in my opinion, responded to the multitude of prayers, and gave us what we needed. If you're goin to question the space travel was needed,i guess if we lost, the competition would get cocky and possibly wage war.If you read and interpreted the bible(not literaly), youd see God gives us what WeNeedWhenWeNeedIt
@leahcimmichael1 I'm sorry, you can't just claim everything good for your particular god by saying that someone prayed for it to happen. That's ridiculous. What happens when people on both sides of a conflict pray to god for help against their enemy? If god gives us what we want when he/it decides we need it then no amount of praying will make the slightest difference, we will just get it.
As the story goes, Julia Ward Howe was sleeping and the words came to her, she woke up and wrote them down before she forgot them. Thank God for that.
Totally wrong. She wasn't asleep. She had been to a review of the Army of the Potomac and had heard "John Browns Body." A friend turned to her and said that it was a good tune but atrocious words and suggested she could do better. She went back to her hotel that night and wrote the song. It became the most famous Civil War song and doesn't even mention the war specifically. It was first issued as a poem and first performed as a song in Framingham, Massachusetts.
As the story goes, Julia Ward Howe was sleeping when the words came to her, she woke up and wrote them down before she forgot them. Thank God for that.
My favourite song, this great country will never fail for we have the such freedom that the country and the United States of America is not just the land that it sits on or the amazing wealth of the people but it is the idea that all people are created equal.
God Bless the United States of America
and God Bless President Bush and President-elect Obama
If you cant say something nice, dont say anything. Nations and countries are artificial constructs. Be yourself as yourself, not as a member of this or that group pretending to be better than others. I love New York, but I love as much Tehran, Mumbai, Shanghai, Calcutta, Tokyo, Istanbul, Karachi, Seoul or Mexico.
I love my country (USA). Don't ever expect me to love anyother as I do her. Don't ever denounce my country again by saying its an "artificial construct".. You can go fuck yourself if you feel that way. Men are dying for you to say what you feel because they love their country. "A man who loves other countries as he does his own is the same as a man who loves other women as he does his wife." -Theodore Roosevelt
This is not a Christian song, this is not an American song, this is a song of liberty, and the commitment of those who have it to defend it, both for themselves and for those still shackled by oppression.
The divisions of nationality are barbaric tribalism, writ large by Gutenberg's expansion of the spheres of social communication. Liberty does not rely on this balkanization of humanity; in fact, they are the starkest of enemies.
You have no idea what yout talking about heathen. Listen to the lyrics, they're all about God Allmighty, His truth and eternal righteousness. Jesus Christ and Christianity are what this song is all about. Jesus Christ is Lord and King and you will see Him in the Clouds coming with great power and Glory one . The United States and Israel are the only lights of freedom in this dark world. Once we're gone God's wrath will wipe out all the evil unbelivers.
Yes, the moral argument is made in religious terms. So was everything back then. My point was that, in this song, Jehovah is interchangeable with a secular personification of justice.
This is not an exhortation to war against unbelievers (if anything, the South was more religious than the North), but a call to arms against slavery (a practice which finds no condemnation in either testament of the Bible).
It's "let us live to make men free," not "let us live to make men Christian."
For some, morality is still argued in the terms of religion; or faith, rather. As eloquent as you might be, this is still written for (and by) those who are both Christian and American.
I expressed myself imprecisely. I meant that the moral message of the song is universal, which makes it stand out among patriotic tunes. The moral argument is expressed in Christian terms, with the liberating union army seen as the sword of the almighty, but it is still a moral universal.
I get a bit belligerently impassioned by this kind of stuff... probably has something to do with the fact that my old man called everything south of the Potomac "enemy territory".
The hymn is to JESUS CHRIST and His Glory!! The 'moral message' is that He will destroy that which is opposed to Him. "Then said David to the Philistine, Thou comest to me with a sword, and with a spear, and with a shield: but I come to thee in the name of the LORD of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel, whom thou hast defied. And all this assembly shall know that the LORD saveth not with sword and spear: for the battle is the LORD's, and he will give you into our hands. " (1Sam17:45,47)
The South was, if anything, more uniform in its acceptance of Christ. The moral message is about slavery; a practice which finds no categorical condemnation in either testament of the bible.
Sometimes people are enslaved and sometimes they enslave themselves. And sometimes they - though freed - can not mentally, emotionally and/or spiritually remove themselves from slavery. Think Exodus for a starter. Vaya con Dios!
What's with this french hatred anyway? Does anybody of you even know what they were facing back then? The east front war hadn't even started then and the nazis rolled into france in force and full blitzkrieg, that kinda invasion is nigh unstoppable. Just because the US have a bigass ocean to hide on the other side of. Besides, what's with this dissing of the nation that made your independence possible with all the aid they gave? The liberation of france was just a repayment of an old favour.
yannos1000, don't expect the stupid person who made that post to know anything about American history and that the French supported America during the War of Independence. I despair of the ignorant people who post on YouTube. By the way, of course France only supported American because France too was at war with her old enemy, England!
renard801: Just like how France was liberated due to it being occupied by the nazis I suppose, had it been a country the US hadn't been at war with I don't think the US would have cared. Eh whatever, I just wanted to throw it out, perhaps he didn't know but now he's at least gotten a clue. Idiocy irritates me to be frank.
This song is about the Battle of Armageddon, you know. Who is Jesus fighting in this battle? The armies of the Antichrist's One World Empire. You could very well wind up being one of the people Jesus kills in the battle depicted in this song. Read Revelation chapters 16-19.
Ok, ok, but I'm just stating a valid point. And I'm not totally proud of some of the history of the U.S. We were probably one of the last nations to abolish slavery, people of any color other than white has been marginalized since then, and we are fighting a war because of oil. No one is perfect, but there are those moments in history to be proud of- be it nationally or internationally.

Woooow, who said that Americans think that we're the "only" free nation. I believe there's a continent of countries that are free. Hint its Europe. And can't a nation be patriotic and not be critized?
This great nation will stand the test of time and has proven so. I remember watching this live and turned it up so loud so that everyone could hear it.
None of us should ever forget that sad, sad day. That was a day when every American was American and when all of the world mmourned with us. God Bless America.
Let us not lose sight of who we are, where we came from but most importantly, where we are going as a people united under the Constitution.
Above all other rhetoric: defend that document, We are a vast and diverse people representing every color and creed on this planet. The Constitution is what was attacked on 9/11. Us! Defend it for it all we have to truly guide us in unity.
One of the finest songs ever!!!! Anyone who has the gall to god***n america should listen to this song. And repent for America is truly the greatest country ever!!!!
It's a great song, but you notice how even though it's the United States' unofficial second national anthem, almost every single person on this video has to look at the words from a sheet to know the lines- including two ex-Presidents and a Speaker of the House.
Big Deal, it's 5 versus. How many songs do you know all of the words to that have 5 versus (actually 6). It is probably the best patriotic song for the US, but it's not our national anthem.
It can't be the best patriotic song if no-one knows the words to it. That means they don't understand the references in the song, apart from "it's about slavery", or "it's about the Civil War".
How many people do you think could become Ministers in the church who can't remember even three or four chapters of the Exodus or Leviticus.
So you think everyone in the should remember all of the songs in the patriotic music box should be memorized by every person at all times for events like 9/11? Sorry I don't agree with you. How about God Bless America, America the Beautiful, Stars and Stripes Forever? Should every American brush up every month on those songs for special events. I'm sure most of us sung them in music class in Grade school, but there isn't a brush up Chorus class in the White house.
So what? How many people are familiar with the historical references in, or context of, The Star-Spangled Banner? How many ordinary Americans even know that the song originated in the War of 1812 and was written about the British siege of Fort McHenry?
Great song. We should all unite to find out the truth of the false flag terror attacks of 9-11. The real war was always against American freedoms and was conducted against us by the federal government and the corporations. Of course those of us who warned you all of this at that time were denounced as traitors by the flag waving blind patriot idiot types. Actually as I understand it there are two versions.
The military version says let us die to make men free in recognition of the fact that they are willing to do just that.
The civilian version says let us live to make men free because we are supposed to carry on the work of the fallen

I'm refering to the nazi era. communist eastern germany was bankrupt, and soviets also so western germany "bought" it. The Americans showed some respect for our struggles but the russians gave us the oportunity to buy it, that was the story i heard.
Nationalsocialism means naziidiology and era.

Thank God! Thank U!
SamuelCyrus 3 years ago 4
1. I have choice because I have a brain, not because some god gave it me.
2. I think Socrates existed for the same reason I think Jesus existed. Your god is an entirely different matter.
3. Curing diseases and space travel are not miraculous, they are the result of scientific endeavour.
tobleramone 3 years ago
Thank you for taking the time to consider and then respond to my views. What does tobleramone represent or stand for? Where are you? Just curious. Thank you again. Most sincerely.
SamuelCyrus 3 years ago
My name doesn't really stand for anything, it's just Toblerone (a kind of chocolate I don't much like) and Ramone joined together. I'm not that keen on it now.
I'm in England, which is getting warmer.
tobleramone 3 years ago
I love chocolate - good chocolate that is - but, like you, don't particularly care for Toblerone. Have you ever tried Teuscher's? Have you heard 'The Ramones?'
SamuelCyrus 3 years ago
Don't think we get Teuscher's over here. The Ramone part is my homage to them, one of my all time favourites.
tobleramone 3 years ago
@tobleramone scientific endeavor? People have prayed to succeed and found great results.People prayed for curing diseases for sure, and same for SpaceTravel, becauseTheyWereBoth hard tasks.God, in my opinion, responded to the multitude of prayers, and gave us what we needed. If you're goin to question the space travel was needed,i guess if we lost, the competition would get cocky and possibly wage war.If you read and interpreted the bible(not literaly), youd see God gives us what WeNeedWhenWeNeedIt
leahcimmichael1 1 year ago
@leahcimmichael1 I'm sorry, you can't just claim everything good for your particular god by saying that someone prayed for it to happen. That's ridiculous. What happens when people on both sides of a conflict pray to god for help against their enemy? If god gives us what we want when he/it decides we need it then no amount of praying will make the slightest difference, we will just get it.
tobleramone 1 year ago
That's not important. One does not have to be a believer to appreicate sacred music.
69Bluntsmoka420 3 years ago 3
That's what I was saying. I was reacting to the hunch I had from reading various comments that this tune/song was somehow sent from above.

As the story goes, Julia Ward Howe was sleeping and the words came to her, she woke up and wrote them down before she forgot them. Thank God for that.
bluebelly07 3 years ago 6
Totally wrong. She wasn't asleep. She had been to a review of the Army of the Potomac and had heard "John Browns Body." A friend turned to her and said that it was a good tune but atrocious words and suggested she could do better. She went back to her hotel that night and wrote the song. It became the most famous Civil War song and doesn't even mention the war specifically. It was first issued as a poem and first performed as a song in Framingham, Massachusetts.

If you cant say something nice, dont say anything. Nations and countries are artificial constructs. Be yourself as yourself, not as a member of this or that group pretending to be better than others. I love New York, but I love as much Tehran, Mumbai, Shanghai, Calcutta, Tokyo, Istanbul, Karachi, Seoul or Mexico.
alphachapmtl 3 years ago 6
I love my country (USA). Don't ever expect me to love anyother as I do her. Don't ever denounce my country again by saying its an "artificial construct".. You can go fuck yourself if you feel that way. Men are dying for you to say what you feel because they love their country. "A man who loves other countries as he does his own is the same as a man who loves other women as he does his wife." -Theodore Roosevelt

Finally, someone with some sense.
TariqAlSuave 3 years ago 4
You have no idea what yout talking about heathen. Listen to the lyrics, they're all about God Allmighty, His truth and eternal righteousness. Jesus Christ and Christianity are what this song is all about. Jesus Christ is Lord and King and you will see Him in the Clouds coming with great power and Glory one . The United States and Israel are the only lights of freedom in this dark world. Once we're gone God's wrath will wipe out all the evil unbelivers.
irvinemuscles 3 years ago 3
Yes, the moral argument is made in religious terms. So was everything back then. My point was that, in this song, Jehovah is interchangeable with a secular personification of justice.
This is not an exhortation to war against unbelievers (if anything, the South was more religious than the North), but a call to arms against slavery (a practice which finds no condemnation in either testament of the Bible).
It's "let us live to make men free," not "let us live to make men Christian."
TariqAlSuave 3 years ago
For some, morality is still argued in the terms of religion; or faith, rather. As eloquent as you might be, this is still written for (and by) those who are both Christian and American.
mdmyers7206 3 years ago 2
I expressed myself imprecisely. I meant that the moral message of the song is universal, which makes it stand out among patriotic tunes. The moral argument is expressed in Christian terms, with the liberating union army seen as the sword of the almighty, but it is still a moral universal.
I get a bit belligerently impassioned by this kind of stuff... probably has something to do with the fact that my old man called everything south of the Potomac "enemy territory".
TariqAlSuave 3 years ago
Ah, I see your point now. Well put.
mdmyers7206 3 years ago
The hymn is to JESUS CHRIST and His Glory!! The 'moral message' is that He will destroy that which is opposed to Him. "Then said David to the Philistine, Thou comest to me with a sword, and with a spear, and with a shield: but I come to thee in the name of the LORD of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel, whom thou hast defied. And all this assembly shall know that the LORD saveth not with sword and spear: for the battle is the LORD's, and he will give you into our hands. " (1Sam17:45,47)
Enoch2 3 years ago 2
The South was, if anything, more uniform in its acceptance of Christ. The moral message is about slavery; a practice which finds no categorical condemnation in either testament of the bible.
TariqAlSuave 3 years ago
You think making men slaves is holy?
rawdawg15 3 years ago
Sometimes people are enslaved and sometimes they enslave themselves. And sometimes they - though freed - can not mentally, emotionally and/or spiritually remove themselves from slavery. Think Exodus for a starter. Vaya con Dios!

By the way, you do realize that, by your standards, Israel is full of "evil unbelievers".

No one is perfect, but there are those moments in history to be proud of- be it nationally or internationally.

night455 3 years ago 2
It's a great song, but you notice how even though it's the United States' unofficial second national anthem, almost every single person on this video has to look at the words from a sheet to know the lines- including two ex-Presidents and a Speaker of the House.
ultramagellan 3 years ago
Big Deal, it's 5 versus. How many songs do you know all of the words to that have 5 versus (actually 6). It is probably the best patriotic song for the US, but it's not our national anthem.
julius923 3 years ago
It can't be the best patriotic song if no-one knows the words to it. That means they don't understand the references in the song, apart from "it's about slavery", or "it's about the Civil War".
How many people do you think could become Ministers in the church who can't remember even three or four chapters of the Exodus or Leviticus.
ultramagellan 3 years ago
So you think everyone in the should remember all of the songs in the patriotic music box should be memorized by every person at all times for events like 9/11? Sorry I don't agree with you. How about God Bless America, America the Beautiful, Stars and Stripes Forever? Should every American brush up every month on those songs for special events. I'm sure most of us sung them in music class in Grade school, but there isn't a brush up Chorus class in the White house.
julius923 3 years ago
So what? How many people are familiar with the historical references in, or context of, The Star-Spangled Banner? How many ordinary Americans even know that the song originated in the War of 1812 and was written about the British siege of Fort McHenry?
WestIndianAK 3 years ago
Actually teach it in schools now. It's common knowledge. I would like America the Beautiful to be our national anthem. Remember Red DAwn?
