  • I'm just fine en pointe &I've been DANCING for three years...

Been doing ballet for two years in about a month &a half, and I've been en pointe for about two months...

Most people say two years before, but it's good to have three(:

  • The elastic on your ribbons should be at the shoe not the knot end of the ribbon

  • Funny Aqward position at 4:05

  • sewing your elastics or ribbons should be according to your feet. You can't tell someone where they go because you don't know where other people's feet look like. more so you should've said sew the ribbons at the highest point of you arch in the shoe.

  • you elastics should be farther back and no padding is okay too.

  • lol at your lisp

  • your archs!!

    oh god

  • i can never tell the difference between left and right pointe so i wrote left and right on the outside but now i see i really should have done it on the inside BTW this is a good vid :DDD if ur wondering i am blond ;)

  • I agree that people should not go on pointe without an instructors consent. You could totally break your ankle or ruin your feet forever! I have been on pointe for a pretty long time and I have seen so many people get injured. Please be careful because it is so fun!

  • Great,, so helpful!! Thanks again! xxx

  • Hey im 12 and im going to be o prepointe on thursday and im really excited me and my friend are both getting prepointe shoes =D

  • Wow! I just started going on pointe last summer and I remember how excited I was to finally be going up. Then I realized how much effort there is to it. So remember that buying those shoes, you made a commitment to yourself!!

  • i just got out of prepointe and im 11 im starting pointe

  • I generally agree with a few of these. The use of padding is something that I would not suggest to people just starting out on pointe. You need to be able to feel the floor. On top of that, younger dancers need to be able to toughen their feet up and build up callouses.

ALSO, FOLKS, DO NOT START POINTEWORK WITHOUT A TEACHER. For the person saying that they only did ballet for 6 months and ended up on pointe, either your teacher is stupid, or you're a fucking liar.

  • some people are ready after six months. it depends on your body. (which was not me cuzz i've been doing ballet for 9 years) there was this girl in my ballet class this year that got on in like a month. she had amazing arches and was extremely strong. shes on poin te now and has been doing great!

  • Actually, no. Pointe is not simply about the body - it's about training and technique. You are put on point not only because your body is sufficiently ready (and I doubt ANYONE could acquire enough strength in their ankles after 6 months unless they are in class every day for those 6 months)

Also, if you have really nice arches to look at, it often means that you have a weak foot. They generally don't like to put girls with high arches like that on pointe too quickly.

  • Also, as you further explain this to me, I'm horrified for you and your studio. That girl is not strong if she has only been put on pointe after a month. You should either quit lying or leave that studio, because that's a recipe for absolute disaster if you're being honest and if she is being put on pointe that soon.

  • im 10 years old and i've been dancing since i was 3. right know i am taking pre pointe. so hopefully (cross your fingers) i get on pointe soon!!!! do any of you have any tips or tricks about pointe? if so, please comment !!!!!

  • I'm so excited, I get my pointe shoes this Christmas! XD

  • Actually I am in pre pointe and will be getting my shoes this saturday and some people in my class have been dancing for 2-2 1/2 years

  • i have had 1 point class...i love it....my teacher lets me work on my turn out at home....it is not that hard....the lady that fitted my shoes and my dance teacher said i was a natural!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • THANK YOU FOR POSTING THIS! I can't tell you how many times i keep telling people on youtube..."Don't go en pointe unless your dance teacher tells you that you can!" and they still post videos of them going en pointe without a teacher's permission....it drives me crazy! But I'm glad someone is taking the initiative to post a video telling people the dos/don'ts of pointe.

  • I agreed with almost everything she said. You cannot practice at home when you first start pointe it is very important for the first 2 months for your teacher to watch all the pointe work you do because your teacher needs to correct placement issues with your feet and ankles.

  • why cant u actually go on pointe on a carpet? lol

  • because it ruins the shoes! it will make the platform fray and its to dangerous for the dance to fall and break, spran, or fracture something

  • carpet's not solid.. Hello

  • My teacher is having a pointe class this summer and i may get my shoes. My parents may not let me go on point yet though. My teacher told me that i can still come and learn the basic tecniques so you can always go to the classes and get ahead if your not on point yet

  • your awsome, can i ask, how old were u when u went on pointe?

  • ok i totally agree with everything you said! im on point and im in grade 8 . i started point a year ago when i was 13 :P i love it sooo much it sucks at the beginning tho! the video was well put together also!

  • Very interesting and informative - well done Olivia.

But its hard to appreciate cos the quality of the vid is not so good. The fuzziness and gloom makes it difficult to see your demonstrations, The music makes it hard to hear you and your voice is sometimes a bit mumbled and fast. And at 0.32 better to start after the dog shut up!

But you *definitely* should keep on making videos - hopefully you find comments constructive - because your content is excellent!

  • step one: thats what i do!

  • umm i disagree with your last comment i started this year of pointe ive been dancing for 6 months and i am on pointe

  • Don't worry. I didn't get on pointe until this year and I'm 14 as well. Trust me. You want to wait for your teacher to tell you. I wanted to be en pointe last yr. but was told my ankles weren't ready. I was really dissapointed but now I realize that I would have SERIOUSLY hurt myself had I done it regardless of my teacher's decision.

  • How long do you have to take ballet lessons or what grade do you have to be on before you switch to pointe shoes ??

  • you have to have at least 1.5 - 2 years of training and your teacher should tell you if you are ready for pointe. It depends on how strong your legs and ankles are!! :O

I'm not ready for pointe yet and I'm 14 yrs old.. sad? I know.. I have poiinte shoes and I wore them like twice.. cuz i know that its dangerous to go onto pointe if you're not ready.

  • usally grade 4

  • very good tips.

    thanks

  • hello i really liked ur video

it will help me alot when i get my point shoes this is goin to b my first all timer

first time on point and first year.....

    im so excited!!!

  • hi!im eleven yrs old and im in grade 5 (ballet).I just cant wait to start going in pointe. He,he i even asked my parents to buy me pointe shoes 4 christmas but my mum said she cant, its too soon. But thx anyway for posting this,i'll keep it when i get to pointe for tips...

  • you should get a better camera! so we can see more clearly!

  • This is brilliant (:

    -not to mention, very helpful!

  • thank you for making this.i just started pointe n its really great.i aldready knew these tips but it was cool to have this as a reminder n i hope to improve if i was making a mistake before.

  • can i ask a question? Can you show me what the inside of a pointe shoe looks like, I am going en pointe soon. I was wondering if it was like just a block of wood, or there was like a dip where the toes go? Thanks

  • Sure! I believe I can do a pointe shoe anatomy video tomorrow!

  • when you make a knot

what happens if u cant untie it?

    :S

sorry im just starting up in ballet

    lol

    ;D

  • Haha, well, if you really can't untie it, I guess you'd have no choice but to cut it and get a new ribbon.

  • Power to the people!

  • great video!! :] how long have you been en pointe??

  • Thanks! I've been en pointe for a couple years now.

  • how come you put your toe pads inside your tights when other pple put it outside of them?

  • Because otherwise my toe pads slip around and I like them to stay in place. There are other people that do the same.

  • this is a really good video - its kinda annoying for me tho in dance, because i got started on pointe after about 6 weeks.. =S [worrying i know] but i checkwed with my teacher and she said she wouldnt start me on it unless she thought i was ready. n we are starting of doing it only every other week - but im really scared about centre work =S

  • Don't worry, if your teacher says you're ready, you're probably ready. If you're scared about centre work, just keep practicing at home while holding on to something. That's the best way to to get ready for centre. Also, don't do anything you're not comfortable with. For instance, for pirouettes, maybe start out with your foot in coupe instead of passe. I'm sure your teacher will understand.

  • aww thanks =]

what grade are you in ballet?

    xxx

  • I'm not in any specific grade, we don't really have those where I go, but I've been doing ballet for 13 years.

  • great video^^

  • Thanks!

  • i know its kind of random, but i hate it when people say "I learning pointe on my own," and then they get into huge trouble. but when people say "i teach myself guitar," they dont get into trouble (because you're not supposed to do that either.) it just makes me mad, lol

  • But you see, in "teaching" yourself pointe you can seriously injure yourself. You can't do that teaching yourself guitar.

  • hey!

i can play that song on my violin!

    =o)

  • Haha, me too! I learned violin with the Suzuki books, and this song was on the CD the first or second book came with, lol.

  • Sweet!

I learned with the Suzuki books too!

    Do you still play?

  • Yup!

  • im just wondering, i've never done it, but im curious what it will do on your shoes: why cant you practice on carpet?

  • You should not do pointe on carpet because it can "grab" your pointe shoe and you can fall off pointe and twist your ankle. Plus it's not good for strengthening ankles.

  • ur stupid, stop.

  • wtf?

  • very clever - nice video production and narration! see if you can spend a little more time blending cuts and trimming the narration to remove the clicks. I use iMove, it works - there are probably programs for windows that can help you do the same. I do like your attention to details. And you are awesome for recommending a professional dance instructor! It is inspiring for my daughter to see someone who loves dance like you obviously do. And you do know there is always room for new ideas!

  • Thank you! I use Windows Movie Maker, and it's worked pretty well so far- it's mostly just me that's bad at editing :p, but I'm getting better.

And tell your daughter to keep dancing!

  • srsly, dont go on pointe without a taecher telling you to. i actually took a pointe shoe that was too small (it was decorative) and put it inside my slip on slippers and balanced in them. now my feet are fkkkddd up and i go to the hospital for tests and everything. save yourself the time, WAIT!

great video, by the way. inspiriing!:)

    MAKE A THIRD!

    much love

    xoxox

  • Thank you! And I'm so sorry to hear about your feet! It makes me so worried to see girls on youtube going en pointe without a teacher's permission. I hope they will listen to you!

  • this is too funny...

  • Haha thanks!

  • just a quick question.

when you sew on your ribbons/elastic, do you use dental floss?

my friend told me since I'm getting a new pair soon.

  • You can. I personally don't, because I have really thick thread that I use, but I know a lot of people that use dental floss.

  • hm...nice :)

  • your pointe videos are the best at youtube! go olivia!!

  • Aw, thank you so much! Go primavera111!

  • wow you r REALLY good at mking videos. my teacher said that i have to get pointe shoes when the class after advanced starts

  • Thanks dear! Put some videos of your pointe work up when you get them. I'd love to see it!

  • ok i'll try. but i don't know how to put a video on youtube.plus i need a tape.

  • Ok, well if you can't, message me and tell me how it goes! :D Starting pointe hurts, but it's a lot of fun too!

  • ok i'll try.

  • plz do more vids i have been looking all over yutube for videos like tis plzzzzzz!!!!!

  • Okie dokie! Feel free to send requests!

  • Fabulous. I'd really like to see more quality videos (like this one) on YouTube in place of that stuff where you can hardly make out what's going on. 5 stars for you!!!
