wow, I had a fire alarm phobia myself. The principal and teachers at Moody school in Taylor, MI and Kennedy High used to excuse me and take me outside before the fire drill. Are law was 8 fire drills a year with the 2 tornado drills. Does your state have the same law?
Actually, the ones at Brockton High School were 4040s, not 4050s.
Then there's the DC version of the 4050; the Simplex 4051. The Davis K-8 school in Brockton, MA has 4051s on 4050-80 light plates; so do the Raymond, Huntington and Keith schools.
Yeah. I think 4040s are louder than 4050s, but 4051s are worse than 4050s in terms of volume. The City Hall Annex/David E. Crosby Administration building in Brockton also has Simplex 4051+4050-80s as well.
I didn't mind them if I was with people, like at school but if I was in a public restroom somewhere and 1 of these went off I'd flip out. I used to have the buzzer type smoke alarms in my old house growing up and I was scared to walk past them.
My high school had Simplex 4040's and they scared the crap outta me when they went off. The shop classes each had one. Fortunately they didn't go off when I was in there. The school recently replaced the whole system with Siemens MMT horn/strobes. I wish I could've got a hold of one of the 4040's.
Vibratory horns aren't the only really loud fire alarms in the game. My college has very loud electronic horns that emit a high screeching sound, and I think they are 100 dB!
I have one that runs off of 6vac, but mine is red and doesn't have that plate on it. When I got it, I took out the volume screw, so it's as loud as it gets.
One of my old elementary schools had those and as i can remember they were mad loud as hell...i even had to go outside away from the school after they announced that there would be a fire drill. When i was in 3rd grade i remember as the alarm went off during gym class and i got so close to that alarm....TWICE....i mustve lost my hearing for days LOL
They were pretty loud. This one has a volume screw on it and I have it set on a lower setting and its still kinda loud but reasonable. With the screw on a higher setting, its unbearable lol
Ah cool. Perhaps the loudest vibratory horn I know of it the Faraday Type 2. Then again, that is what its supposed to do, scare you out of a burning building so its doing its job pretty well.
My college has some Simplex 4050s in the Fine Arts building. They aren't the flush-mount versions; they are red and are mounted on those silver 4050-80 light plates. The pull stations are the Simplex T-bars with Stopper II covers over them.
No, I don't think so. I didn't hear them go off yet. According to an old evacuation sheet, it says the fire alarm signal is "one long sustained blast," so they are probably set in continuous tone. Another school I know that has 4050-80s has them sounding in this early Temporal code that ISN'T Code 3 or March Time.
What I really want is a simplex 24VDC 4051 and a 4050-80. If I get them, I will wire it to my Silent Knight panel. And yes I know the NAC codes the alarm but you need to adress the code to the NAC. My Silent knight panel can do pulse, code 3, temporal, supervisory, and continous.
A 4051 is basically a 4050 that runs on 24DVC. It sounds a bit different. My college uses the 4051s, according to the tag, and they're the ones commonly mounted on 4050-80s.
It has a round vibration plate behind the grille, instead of the square one seen on 4050s. My high school had really loud 4040s behind flush-mount grilles like that. The pulls were Edwards 270s, and last time I talked with the principal there, I suggested to her that they put Stopper II covers over the pulls. She thought it was a great idea and eventually plans on doing it
in my elementary school, we had the simplex 4050's or the fs 3-450's, one or the other and on the new addition we had the wheelock ns. where my classroom was you could hear both and combined was loud as hell i did not want to be in school during drills.
I had the same problem in High School. When they added more classrooms, they the simplex 4050, which was VERY LOUD!!! and they also had the Simplex system that has the built in strobe light. WHen they had the new system all put in, it was even louder yet! We had fire drills once a month.
My elementary school has the 4050 horn and it scare the hell out of me. I have to go outside on fire drills before the fire alarm goes off so it would scare me anymore.

This particular one runs on 12VAC. I have also seen them in 120VAC, 24VAC and 6VAC.

you're not the only one who feared those alarms. in my case however, when they ran fire alarm tests, i would be panicky.
figment1988 3 years ago
me too. we had lots of simplex 2001 at my elmentry school and when it went off, i ran inside the closet and the had to send firemen to get me out.
deafmonk19 3 years ago
I don't get how you guys find this alarm scary I like the way this alarm sounds. In my opinion vibratory horns sound the best over all horns.
danll5 4 years ago
Because vibratory horns are also the loudest.
DavidFromAE 4 years ago
I know I have a 4051 and a 240VAC vibratone 350 older model and its about 115db

Yes a 4051 is either 12VDC or 24VDC. A 4050 is either 6VAC, 12VAC, 24VAC, 120VAC, or 220VAC.
danll5 4 years ago
That could work. I think seeing a 4050-80 going off in Code 3 would be interesting.
wiley207 4 years ago
Okay, I will do it if I ever get my hands on them both.
danll5 4 years ago
The school I graduated from had simplex 4040 series horns, they sounded almost exactly the same as the 4050 you have there

you might want to try and take it off of the ground and you might get better results as far as the sound goes.
jw870206 5 years ago
It was like that because of the sound quality on the camera.

Fire Alarms never scared me half to death, they just startled me in elementary school. Now they are a "break from class"

yeah, the ones at school at my school are maybe as loud as a 12 volt buzzer you would pick up at Radioshack (the small white cased ones)
