Bacharach, ever the subtle radical, confounding expectations by writing a song with an instrumental introduction that lasts longer than the vocal.

And he does it after more than a half century of creating some of the most intriguing pop songs in history. Amazing!

FWIW, to my ear, Wainwright's delivery suits the almost hypnotic feel of the music just right, even if the lyric is a bit dark.

lol. I know what you mean about certain artists too, but I like Rufus' strange voice. It sounds though sometimes like he has a mouth full of food while he is singing. But, I still love him.
