I bought a AC adapter from best buy a few years ago. I bought the extended warranty. A few months ago, it pooped (I don't know the actual issue, but I was pissed when my 10 min battery died out on my laptop when I was doing a PowerPoint school thing). I then took it back to Best Buy. I then got an exchange of a new model of the product and it works perfectly fine. I get extended warranties for stuff that need them (HDD's & power adapters) from good stores (best buy & staples) my opinion however.
I bought a (42k km)used car last sept 2010($10k) plus extended warranty cost $2,400. after 6 months I sold my the car and bought a new one. I dont remember that extended warranty is being used. they replaced the transmission but it was covered by factory warranty... I was thinking again and again if it's worth to buy this (scam?) extended warranty again since the my new car is only 24k km on it?? pls advise me. thanks
BestBuy Black Tie 4 year warranty replaces 100% of anything. I messed with my Xbox and broke the tamper sticker and they still replaced it. It was like $90 for the $300 Xbox.
i repeair my own stuff i even take ones out of the garbage and then refurbish them to sell them to oher people this 32' monitor im actually running now came out of the garbage and fixed for 2.60
I just check on the reviews on the product on websites like amazon. And if it has mostly good reviews or a great overall rating then I will not get the warranty. But if it has some bad reviews specifically about it not lasting long or breaking. Then I wil get the warranty.
If you do buy an extended warranty on anything... You want a warranty that covers Accidental Damage and spills, and 100 percent coverage. Example: If you have a Wii or Move and you launch your controller at the TV ask if that is covered. Ask several Store associates if that is covered in the extended warranty. If not then its not worth it.
Funny u mention troubles with Mac Book Pros. I had my sony laptop 5 years now and its still going strong (knock on wood). But I'll never buy a sony lap top again, I want my next laptop to be a HP Envy 800g ssd and reg: hdd combo, second gen Intel i7, 3D graphics card (tv tuner never been important to me) and I'd settle for a 15" but 17 would be better some times, but 15" better all the time for traveling. NO!! no ipad 1 or 2... NO THANKS!!
You should get extended warranty on you phone car and gaming console, computer if u want, but I have it on all four and three have paid off, my car especially, saved me 1500$ on a minor repair and 1300$ of that is just mechanic hrly pay...
OO and i forgot to mention RC Willey, if anything malfunctions they'll fix it but if you don't use the warranty they'll send you back half of what you paid for the warranty so its an ok deal
hp total care is also very good for my hp touchsmart i broke the screen twice the processer went bad brok the pen that came within 2 times and i have had many dents on the laptop and they fixed it all no questions asked it cost 400 for 3 years a
I use shoeboxed[.]com to keep track of my purchases. It's pretty nice and FREE! You should check it out. They also provide a service to scan your recepts or business cards for you. Thanks Chris, keep up the good work!
I was offered a warranty on a CD I purchased one time at Best Buy. I asked the clerk if she was kidding and she said no. I guess everyone else was too embarrassed to ask me in the past if I wanted a warranty on a CD I was purchasing. It gave me one helluva a laugh.
I do not buy warranties on anything I buy even all the Apple products I buy. Three iPods, three iMacs, two iPhones and one Mac Pro later I think of all the money I saved in AppleCare.
I always like to get warranties especially on big ticket products. My camera, tv, laptop...pretty much most of my electronics got extended warranties. I make sure I get the ones with the accidental damage plan on it or the "no lemon law". If my product fails 3 times then they give me a new one as long as I am in the 2-3 year period.
Either the product they're trying to sell you is junk and you actually need it, or the product is fine and you don't need it. Either way you're getting ripped off.
Ooh, I've always wondered what it is you do to make money.
3:40, how did I know that this was coming right from the beginning? I've got Apple Care on my Mac, and haven't needed it, but everywhere I've looked I've heard that it should be worth having should I ever need it.
I did but after my HTC screen dead and i sent it in for warranty repair, they crack the screen when they where fixing it and stop, send it back to me saying it was not covered. and they will not fix it even though they cracked it.
I really don't buy extended warranties. The only thing I do buy extended warranties for are ps3 controllers. Thats because the warranties are typically inexpensive and game controllers usually go bad within two years especially if you are a heavy gamer.
The only extended warranty that worth is the AppleCare or sometimes Bestbuy, but most stores will make you call a 1-800 number first, sometime even havng to ship it to them and only cover you, only after the manufacturer warranty has expired. Some products come with a 3 years to sometimes even a 6 years warranty already.
The only warranty that worth buying is a replacement on the spot warrenty, which is not offer with most high dollar amount products. You have to read the fine print.
I never buy extended warranties. Often because I can't afford them, but also because I see little point. A more expensive product (e.g. my iMac) usually comes with a longer initial warranty anyway. If you look after the item it can last a long time and if it DOES go wrong it's often just bad luck. The original Xbox 360 models being a strong exception to that rule.
@dielan44 He didn't say ALL hard drives go bed. He meant that it's pretty common for hard drives to be the first component in any computer to break. If you think about it, they're being hammered the most.
Some people also have accidental insurance. Those people can also use their insurance to fix costly damaged electronic devices like a laptop that would have got drunk on coffee. I've done it with a 3000$ MacBook Pro and it saved me even the mighty Apple Care. Of course, they won't fix it if it breaks, but after all, if you just want Best Buy warranty just because of the accidental part, think twice and check your insurance policy. You might very well already pay for it.
Chris, you need a light beamed directly on you when you drive or get a camera with manual white balance and exposure because this camera continuously gets darker and brighter whenever the background brightness changes.
I've had nothing but good luck with warranties from best buy, I mean there's certain products you just shouldn't get warranties on(when is a DVD going to break on you?), but I mean when it comes to MP3 players and hardware that shit breaks. Everytime I have a problem they replace it for me with a new or refurbished product on the spot.
i laptop is under repairs right now. For the $150-ish i paid at the time (3yr warranty) i am now getting the hdd drive, dvd drive and motherboard replaced. Acer warranty is pretty good in aus.
@chubz1337 acer warranty is ok but they are shit when acer product get a common fault like the acer travelmate timeline 8371 backlight goes back on every 8371
@morgy596 lol there was also i common fault with my model 5738g where it was loaded with the wrong bios
(not just mine all of them) so it would get crazy hot. So all they did was issue an update to the bios. Who knows what was damaged as a result of the heat though and how many people actually applied the bios update as most people are not that tech savvy.
how to be bankrupt...... offer a warranty against fault and breakage and then watch it used for people to abuse. you USED those hiking boots chris, they wernt faulty you just didnt use them .. how is THAT a warranty. possibly if you were still out supplying a product rather than advising on how other should spend there money it would more of a case that why should you resupply equipment or parts due to willfull damage or just obsolescence
I bought a d link router 3 to 4 years ago which i also purchased with a 3 year warranty it broke after 3 months so they replacced it for me then it broke again so they upgraded my to a wireless n then i realized if i broke it i could get a free upgrade to a router under $100 so i got 2 more upgrades then the
There are very expensive wrenches, that cost twice as much but come with live long warranty. If you're not going to loose your tools, its worth the money.
I once heard about a garage that had a wrench that broke after 70 years. The factory replaced it.
Also, since it is a factory warranty, you don't have to remember where you bought it, just find a current dealer.
The lesson from this is: factory warranties have a better chance than reseller's ones.
I was ready to buy the newer kodak ZX5 pocket video camera, HD 1080p, water proof, shock proof to 5 feet, dust proof, records video in sepia, B&W, color, high saturation, image stabiliation, everything, and its on sale for $137.99.... i was ready until i found out it has an integrated rechargeable battery, in this case, an average battery lasts a few years so a 2-3 year extended warranty would work in this case since i can't replace the battery myself, what do you think i should do people??
For a product to actually start having problems is about the same as the manufacturer warranty. For example my iphone; Apples default warrenty when purchased is 1 year. After 11 months my iphone wouldn't connect to wifi, dead pixels, and overheating issues. Before my warranty expired I bought apple care to extend it another year.
My dell extended warranty paid for itself just because the laptop kept braking! :L
But I buy extended warranties with all my computers because they are likely to break and if they do you can get it fixed and even if they don't then hey its win win.
one time i bought extended warranty on a laptop and the hard drive broke after about 1.5 years, i could have bought a bigger hard drive for 100, the warranty cost 150
i pay best buy $15 a month for insurance on my iphone and it covers everything! including accidents. just pay the $50 deductible and you get a replacement. :)
@metallicat511 mmm if nothing goes bad for a year thats already $230 that it would cost you to get a replacement.... you can get a new one for 199 from att with a 2year contract renewal... is it worth it?
@tonybeir when you renew your contract you can not renew until your contract up or you pay $375 to get out of it. so if you buy an iphone and renew your contract and in a year say your screen shatters you are still under contract and there is no way out other then paying the $375 early termination free then buy a new one for $200 and do a new contract. your looking at $575. or $600 to buy a new one out of contract. $700 id you want the 32GB model.
I always get suckered into buying them. Last time I bought a keyboard the guy rang it up with the warranty and said "that's how much it will cost with the 2 year warranty" so I was already expecting to pay that price so I figured why not! XD
Not to troll, but being a current employee of a company which I won't pitch the name out for, I can shed some light on this experience.
- Extended warranties are not what my employer sells, we sell protection and replacement plans. The mnfg and apple doesn't cover what we cover by any means (i.e. - power surges, accidental damage, etc.). Depending on devices, you also get a free charger and battery on request one time.
- There are more of us than Apple stores and you don't need an appointment.
- This is applicable on some items more than others, but the paperwork is submitted on coverage for all items if you request it/purchase a plan. There's no hidden clauses on coverage.
- PROPERLY done screen repairs on laptops runs at least $300 in most cases, our plans are in the $200 range and that INCLUDES the free battery and charger...do the math.
Most people lock up when they hear coverage plan, but you use insurance on your car right? Nobody PLANS on stuff breaking lol
Apple care for iMacs or the laptops I see a good investment since they cover everything plus you get free shipping, or you can just swap the device out right away in any Apple store. However for iPhones, I don't see the need since I upgrade usually when my contract is up.
Chris - Years ago I purchased an ipod at best buy with a two year warranty. Now, every two years I tell them its broken and they replace it. I then purchase another $20 warranty. Essentially I am getting an up to date product every year by paying the price of the warranty.
@QuantumSmart How do you get Best Buy to exchange it??? I took my ipod to best buy and I have the extended warranty and they sent me to their Geek Squad section and they scrutinized the hell out of it and told me they wouldn't exchange it because they determined it was fine. I had to send it back to Apple & have them declare it defective before Best Buy would take it back.
Chris: I keep a 3 ring binder with dividers. In each section, I keep the receipt, any literature the item came with along with the warranty and extended warranty documentation. On the tab divider I write the name of the electronic device & the date of purchase & Warr exp & date - This way it is available at a glance and it is all kept together in one place.
@QuantumSmart Personally I find it disgusting that this comment received some much approval. Since when has dishonesty been a good thing? If stores are dishonest people go crazy yet if the customer is dishonest they get congratulated?
If it's not broken, don't get it fixed. Stop feeling you always need the latest and greatest and learn to be happy with what you've got if it works. I can't pretend the store aren't being idiots by being suckered by that, but the dishonesty is appalling.
Back in the day (several years ago), I used to buy extended "accidental damage" coverage for my Dell laptops. I used it quite a bit because it covered just about everything - including a screen I damaged. Other than that, no I don't waste money on extended warranties.
Hey try this company I use it for every device I buy it's called Square Trade Google square trade coupon and get good discounts up to 30% or more also it even works for eBay items this company say they will fix your product within 5 days or give u your money back for it and also get your money back for any unused part of the warranty
I never had a HHD fail on me besides a stupid seagate that broke out of the box been with WD ever since and no problems. Still got a maxtor from 2001 still works installed it into my xbox.
chris why do you have music on top of your ustream video again why you starting this again why you doing this a agin when are you doing to stop this does it make you happy
I've purchased extended warranties for electronics before, but I've never used them. I usually forget where I bought the device and lose the paperwork for it.
I just never buy expensive Apple products. That saves a lot of pain in the ass. I just buy a new HP or ASUS laptap every so much years and they always work. NEver had problems with them and if if if something go's wrong the parts are cheap.
I don't know what its like in the US, but here in Europe (most places) our home insurances can cover damage or failure for upto 4 years from the purchase date... It costs a small amount each year, but its still ALOT cheaper than the extended warranties the shops sell... All they are good for is the commision the salesmen get...
With my new television I bought a 5-year guarantee for ten percent of the price, which is handy as it covers me -if- when the TV breaks five years in the future
i never buy warrantys (btw game warrantys are such a scam) i only bought an warranty for a xbox 360 (which i lost the receipt for, luckily microsoft extended the warranty for RROD issues so i didnt need (i found that receipt two years later fml)
Once and it did come in handy, it was four dollars and the player broke a year later was able to get a new one and that broke a year later. Keeping everything organized is not an issue. It would really have to be worth it for the right price and have the right type of coverage.
i got extended warranty on allot of things but some i dont have it on. Wish i had it on my iphone. Would like an new battery for it. We got two years warranty in sweden. Then we can add one year.
If it's Apple Care, yep. Very worth it. For a start you actually get something extra with it rather than just a longer period for you to get your stuff fixed. You get priority support over the phone and can take your product to any authorised Apple Reseller/Repair Centre. In the case of the Mac, you get extra software that helps diagnose potential disk issues and fix things before they become a real problem and so on. Plus, they give you a new model if your generation isn't being made any more.
I actually sell warranties at the place that I work. They are good up until a point. At least at the place I work, you should definitely get a warranty on something like a set of headphones because they will actually just give you a new pair when the old ones die. For other stuff though, I wouldn't buy it. It all depends.
Usually by the time the regular warranty is up the hardware is starting to get obsolete. So usually it's cheaper to just upgrade instead of fixing it.
@itouchhacker241 No. Jailbraking voids your warranty. Unless you restore it and get rid of all traces you've done as such they're well within their rights to turn you down for support/repair or whatever if they find out you did it.
I sold these scams for a few years. You need to read the fine print, there should be an area that says what it covers. If it doesn't cover acts of god (which most won't) it's not worth the paper it's printed on.
Someone stepped on my laptop while I was gone from home and no one will say they did it my laptop was covered on warranty but not accidental damages so that was a waste of money and now i have to repair it myself with my own money.
Sellers of consumer goods within the EU are obliged to guarantee the conformity of the goods with the contract for a period of two years after the delivery of the goods.
Apple care is the only extended warranty I purchase. Extended warranty for a printer "If anything goes bad with your printer we will replace it on the spot." Sounds good, my printer goes bad, "You have to call the company" Oh what ever waste of time.
Warranties exist because the company that sells them makes a profit of them hence it's not worth it. If getting a warranty was worth it, the company would make a loss and possibly face bankrupcy.
I have a warranty on my car with Vurge. Definitely worth it, saved me over $1200 in just one repair.

@chubz1337 acer warranty is ok but they are shit when acer product get a common fault like the acer travelmate timeline 8371 backlight goes back on every 8371
morgy596 9 months ago
@morgy596 lol there was also i common fault with my model 5738g where it was loaded with the wrong bios
(not just mine all of them) so it would get crazy hot. So all they did was issue an update to the bios. Who knows what was damaged as a result of the heat though and how many people actually applied the bios update as most people are not that tech savvy.
chubz1337 9 months ago
how to be bankrupt...... offer a warranty against fault and breakage and then watch it used for people to abuse. you USED those hiking boots chris, they wernt faulty you just didnt use them .. how is THAT a warranty. possibly if you were still out supplying a product rather than advising on how other should spend there money it would more of a case that why should you resupply equipment or parts due to willfull damage or just obsolescence

I don't believe in most of da warranties but companies like Apple are pretty awsome at it!
raphael77ful 9 months ago

In sweden we have a law that give us minimum of 2 years warranty on EVERTTHING
ManzalaStudio 9 months ago
For a product to actually start having problems is about the same as the manufacturer warranty. For example my iphone; Apples default warrenty when purchased is 1 year. After 11 months my iphone wouldn't connect to wifi, dead pixels, and overheating issues. Before my warranty expired I bought apple care to extend it another year.
f1ipm0nk3y 9 months ago
I generally never get extended warranties.
jacobbubble2 9 months ago
My dell extended warranty paid for itself just because the laptop kept braking! :L
But I buy extended warranties with all my computers because they are likely to break and if they do you can get it fixed and even if they don't then hey its win win.

i pay best buy $15 a month for insurance on my iphone and it covers everything! including accidents. just pay the $50 deductible and you get a replacement. :)
metallicat511 9 months ago
@metallicat511 mmm if nothing goes bad for a year thats already $230 that it would cost you to get a replacement.... you can get a new one for 199 from att with a 2year contract renewal... is it worth it?
tonybeir 9 months ago
@tonybeir when you renew your contract you can not renew until your contract up or you pay $375 to get out of it. so if you buy an iphone and renew your contract and in a year say your screen shatters you are still under contract and there is no way out other then paying the $375 early termination free then buy a new one for $200 and do a new contract. your looking at $575. or $600 to buy a new one out of contract. $700 id you want the 32GB model.
metallicat511 9 months ago
@tonybeir with the insurance you will have payed the $230 plus a $50 deductible. so $280 vs $600.

dudewarp 9 months ago
Chris are you Jewish?
vrietmet 9 months ago
Not to troll, but being a current employee of a company which I won't pitch the name out for, I can shed some light on this experience.
- Extended warranties are not what my employer sells, we sell protection and replacement plans. The mnfg and apple doesn't cover what we cover by any means (i.e. - power surges, accidental damage, etc.). Depending on devices, you also get a free charger and battery on request one time.
- There are more of us than Apple stores and you don't need an appointment.
AndreTheGigante 9 months ago
@AndreTheGigante
Nobody PLANS on stuff breaking lol

my friend buys a warranty for his xbox every year. he got it in '08. it's come in handy many times
TubazRule94 9 months ago
Apple care for iMacs or the laptops I see a good investment since they cover everything plus you get free shipping, or you can just swap the device out right away in any Apple store. However for iPhones, I don't see the need since I upgrade usually when my contract is up.

Chris - Years ago I purchased an ipod at best buy with a two year warranty. Now, every two years I tell them its broken and they replace it. I then purchase another $20 warranty. Essentially I am getting an up to date product every year by paying the price of the warranty.
QuantumSmart 9 months ago 71
@QuantumSmart Also, that is illegal. Unless it is actually broken of course.

nikyjim 9 months ago
@QuantumSmart well I am assuming you were lying, so did you keep all of those ipod's? Or did they ask for them back?
diablo9333 9 months ago
@QuantumSmart How do you get Best Buy to exchange it??? I took my ipod to best buy and I have the extended warranty and they sent me to their Geek Squad section and they scrutinized the hell out of it and told me they wouldn't exchange it because they determined it was fine. I had to send it back to Apple & have them declare it defective before Best Buy would take it back.
zoics1 9 months ago
Chris: I keep a 3 ring binder with dividers. In each section, I keep the receipt, any literature the item came with along with the warranty and extended warranty documentation. On the tab divider I write the name of the electronic device & the date of purchase & Warr exp & date - This way it is available at a glance and it is all kept together in one place.
zoics1 9 months ago

I just never buy expensive Apple products. That saves a lot of pain in the ass. I just buy a new HP or ASUS laptap every so much years and they always work. NEver had problems with them and if if if something go's wrong the parts are cheap.
Apple crews you and you dont know you like it!

I don't know what its like in the US, but here in Europe (most places) our home insurances can cover damage or failure for upto 4 years from the purchase date... It costs a small amount each year, but its still ALOT cheaper than the extended warranties the shops sell... All they are good for is the commision the salesmen get...

Once and it did come in handy, it was four dollars and the player broke a year later was able to get a new one and that broke a year later. Keeping everything organized is not an issue. It would really have to be worth it for the right price and have the right type of coverage.

jelanidozier 9 months ago
If it's Apple Care, yep. Very worth it. For a start you actually get something extra with it rather than just a longer period for you to get your stuff fixed. You get priority support over the phone and can take your product to any authorised Apple Reseller/Repair Centre. In the case of the Mac, you get extra software that helps diagnose potential disk issues and fix things before they become a real problem and so on. Plus, they give you a new model if your generation isn't being made any more.
TalesOfWar 9 months ago
I actually sell warranties at the place that I work. They are good up until a point. At least at the place I work, you should definitely get a warranty on something like a set of headphones because they will actually just give you a new pair when the old ones die. For other stuff though, I wouldn't buy it. It all depends.
TheBenjiNecessity 9 months ago
Usually by the time the regular warranty is up the hardware is starting to get obsolete. So usually it's cheaper to just upgrade instead of fixing it.
cusinndzl 9 months ago
O yea and dose Apple care still work on a jailbroken ipod?
itouchhacker241 9 months ago
@itouchhacker241 if you bring it in not jailbroken lol, just restore it before you bring it in, that's what I do
macreviews94 9 months ago
@itouchhacker241 No. Jailbraking voids your warranty. Unless you restore it and get rid of all traces you've done as such they're well within their rights to turn you down for support/repair or whatever if they find out you did it.
TalesOfWar 9 months ago
I sold these scams for a few years. You need to read the fine print, there should be an area that says what it covers. If it doesn't cover acts of god (which most won't) it's not worth the paper it's printed on.

Apple care is the only extended warranty I purchase. Extended warranty for a printer "If anything goes bad with your printer we will replace it on the spot." Sounds good, my printer goes bad, "You have to call the company" Oh what ever waste of time.
geniousmac 9 months ago
Warranties exist because the company that sells them makes a profit of them hence it's not worth it. If getting a warranty was worth it, the company would make a loss and possibly face bankrupcy.
xRaIDeNx69 9 months ago
no its not worth it if its to expensive because a lot of times they don't fix my stuff saying it only covers hard ware when does that happen.
