i had a korg x50, sound was amazing (compared to the yamaha mm6 that i have know), but it was just too complicated to control. small display and about a thousand adjustable parameters. good for recording at home. shit for stage.

@TheMACcar lol. You can get a rack-mount synthesizer which just makes sounds and has no keyboard. But the point of the "keyboard/synth" combo is the ability to actually perform on it. Personally, I want to be able to do as much as possible on just one piece of hardware (except sequencing :P)

@lantyboy I believe this synthesizer is for those who want to have control over their patches, by editing basic and more advanced settings. As you heard, this X50 has some decent sounds including strings, brass, and bass. Of course, it also does piano and organ. If you're not used to playing a keyed instrument, the light weight keys may also help your performances. As far as drums go, I believe it has nice sounds too. If you don't need all this, you can cut price by buying a home electric piano.

its not a synthesizer in that it uses waveforms to make sounds. so, most people wouldn't call it a synth. however, it technically is a synth in a different way- it uses a recorded sound and then puts it through synth parts like envelopes and filters to make the final sound

@BMXtothemax2 no. keyboards that can do that are called samplers. this is a ROMpler; a keyboard with many sounds stored inside its ROM memory. These sounds can then be put through various synthesis techniques to make different sound characteristics.

You can make sounds by taking one of the pre-recorded sounds and putting it through various synthesis techniques like envelopes and filters to reshape the sound.

To actually record sounds you'd need a sampler feature such as what's in the M3.

An envelope, or ADSR, controls a sounds volume over time. There's Attack, how long it takes the sound to reach max volume, Decay, how long it takes the sound to reach sustain volume, Sustain, the volume the sound stays at until let go, and Release, how long it takes a sound to go silent when the key is let go.

A filter cuts out parts of a sound. Putting a filter on a guitar could make it dull like a bass, I.E.

@BMXtothemax2 this link is really good for learning about synthesis. this tutorial uses analog synthesis- using waveforms to make sounds- which isn't what the x50 does. so, while watching this vid, imagine instead of waveforms you start with a pre-recorded sound such as a guitar recording.
